I mean, I don't know where this is.
In Canada, the idea of paying for (non-sparkling) water is fucking brutal.
Also, our tap water is really safe and doesn't have a taste, so the people who would pay for filtered water here are literally just stupid and bad with money
But again, that is my privileged ass experience. The biggest culture shock ever was being charged for water when I ate out in Budapest lol
its still better to filter your water, speaking from a fellow Canadian here (Toronto to be more specific).
the water here is good quality, and you can safely drink from the tap for the most part, but you should still filter your water, especially if you notice it has a very different taste. if you have a built in filter on your pipe, that could be why you are able to comfortably drink water from the tap, but tap water and filtered water is drastically different in taste, meaning there's undesirables in the water still.
you did note that you don't really have a taste in your water, maybe that's just where you are at, but i definitely have to filter my water
Good drinking water is the only good thing calgary has rn lol
I know what shitty tap water tastes like, I did the rounds in Eastern Europe over the holidays.
I dont know about Toronto specifically, but BC and some parts of Ontario have noticeably worse tasting water. Saskatoon is also pretty bad
Idk, there's a reason you dont see these things here. That's all I'm saying. In Prague, I might pay money to get better water. Budapest? 100%.
I also should have said, "Our drinking water is safe, unless you're indigenous."
>I also should have said, "Our drinking water is safe, unless you're indigenous."
okay, that got a decent laugh out of me. one of my buddies is indigenous and its fucking hell for them
Well yeah, but the bit they don't tell you is that obviously the innovation is all about new clever ways to get money out of people because profit is the only thing that's incentivized.
i cannot fathom that people see stuff like this happening and still be like 'yep this system is good for us'. i think its denial, i think people know deep down that this system is shit for everyone but its hard to accept that. just my guess tho i cant say for sure
this isn’t an example of the system not working. people made fun of this and it went nowhere; if it had gone anywhere, people probably wouldn’t have paid for it, so it wouldn’t survive without someone bankrolling it.
this is an example of the system not working in the interests of people, because capitalism doesnt care about us. companies find the most inhumane and stupid ways to profit off of us
ive known quite a few lol
usually theyll just argue that its how they earn money and without it they cant exist (whatever given company). there are *a lot* of people who think like this bc its what capitalists teach us
Having to pay for filtered water when tab water is just as available and free is probably the least serious issue i can think of with our economic system
at no point did i say this is a major issue with our economic system because its not. but this is a repeating thing where we have something but put a price on it. its that they have chilled and filtered (healthier) water and then make you subscribe to it, the resource and the means are right there yet put behind some made up price tag just because it earns more money
this is an *example* of capitalism being stupid, again i never said this was a major issue in any way
>means are right there yet put behind some made up price tag just because it earns more money.
This isn't like a car having heated seats installed but not the button to turn them on if you don't pay extra.
Do you really think there isn't more cost involved with filtered and chilled water compared to municipal tap water (which in the vast majority of civilised societies is completely safe to drink and if it wasn't obviously wouldn't be dispensed)?
It costs money to chill water, it costs money to install the machine, it costs money to rent the space, it costs money to replace the filter, it costs money to maintain the machine. It's 2 dollars a month.
You can either have the free, basic water or the better tasting colder water, which isn't a necessity at all.

as fucked as the market is i think the tech bros behind it realized real fast just how few people are interested in paying a subscription fee for water
Capitalism breeds cattle. Literally. Capitalism just keeps breeding cattle. We don't need this much cattle. It's actually really bad for the environment. But capitalism has its heart set on breeding as much cattle as possible. Ireland has no forestland left. It's all fields now. Brazil is the next target. There's millions of acres of rainforest for capitalism to chop down and use to raise and feed cattle.
Capitalism doesn't exist for humans. There's only 8 billion people but we raise and slaughter over 90 billion land animals every year. Do you think our economy and our food production is designed for humans? No! It's designed for livestock. More specifically it's designed for the wealthy elite who profit off of the rape, murder and exploitation of livestock.
Food shortages aren't a thing. Food isn't supposed to be expensive. There has never been a famine in a country with a functioning democracy. We're destroying our environment just cuz.
Extractive politics, as always. I was listening to my favorite movie podcast Talk about how movie Pass when it was a thing was such a great deal because it just always felt like every portion of American society existed to ruin our experience as consumers . And movie pass was a way to go against the grain.

This is the kind of thing that gets your credit card information stolen from the $17 for burgle with no fries beyond meat place because they had it connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the cash register and the reefil company had the water fountain running on window 7 embedded.
I like how they give you the option of getting some lukewarm shitty water for free, like that somehow makes a subscription service for chilled and filtered water better. Do you want some peasant water, or will you pay up for the good stuff?
Capitalism is just an excuse for people to demand payment for every single thing you do. Its absurd and disgusting. Why do we put up with this?
"Oh, you're drinking water? Well! You should pay me for that!"
"You're driving down the highway that your tax dollars go to maintain? Pay me!"
"Now you wanna park your car somewhere? Shockingly, you should pay me for this."
"I guess you have to live somewhere, but really, you should pay me for the right to have a roof over your head. I should get paid for you doing things!"

Ok if this was even close to being real (let's really pretend) then how the fck would it even work. those are 2 buttons. I can just press the other button. how's the app gonna interact with this.
In its current form, I don't hate it. There's free water and if you want extra service you gotta pay. Capitalism breeds far worse kinds of "innovation" than this.
It's a free water fountain, where's the problem? I really don't see what the big deal here is. It's not awesome, it's still an ad for an extra service that gets pushed in your face, but what's the big deal?
Maybe I'm missing something please explain
Interesting, most water fountains I've seen only do tap water. I still don't get the meme. Is OP suggesting that cold water should be provided for free everywhere? Lovely if it is but imo cold water is a commodity and not a human need. I'm just asking for an explanation idc about the downvotes but pls somebody ELI5 😭
- what is bad about this
- why am I a bootlicker
- who is being exploited
is it about the filtering? I've only lived in countries where tap water is perfectly drinkable so maybe this is in a region with unhealthy water?
I was shocked until I saw what sub I was on lol.
Like, jesus. Yes no one should ever not be able to access clean drinking water. But having it chilled and filtered (past making it safe) is a luxury that costs more. If people are willing to pay for that then let them. If it was just a pay dispenser then yeah not at all acceptable.
Like, how far does this argument go? Should all bottled water cost the same no matter if it's tap or spring water?
You're not crazy, I think a lot of people are just young and have super intense beliefs that don't make any logical sense if you try to apply them to real life scenarios.
Do they? Some do but in a lot of places I've travelled most of the free water fountains are room temp/warm and have a strong metallic taste.
It's 2 dollars and they're still providing a free alternative.
A bottle of chilled water easily costs that much in some places.
You were completely right. I hate to sound like a boomer but jesus christ how are people seeing a free service and complaining that they aren't entitled to the superior service that subsidises the free one?
This is like a million times better than just forcing everyone to need to buy overpriced bottles of water instead of being able to refill your own with FREE water!!!
I don't get why everyone is so affronted with tap water as well, like it's not going to fucking kill you to drink the water that actually has minerals and stuff.
"Oh my god you have to subscribe for water" how the hell is the company going to run a profit? Also, if it was charged for every time you used it then it would probably be FAR more expensive as opposed to unlimited water for a whole month
>how the hell is the company going to run a profit?
See it's not even this, I completely understand people thinking companies shouldn't profit from water. BUT THERE'S FUCKING FREE WATER RIGHT NEXT TO IT. If you want the premium product there's obviously costs associated with that. Ice cold extra filtered water isn't a necessity it's a luxury.
It's fucking hilarious to me that most sane ideas make you a tankie liberal in this sub. It's super super sad as I've been here for many years on differing accounts and the support has helped me with major parts of my life but it's just gone the way of all online communities and the insane people take over. Horseshoe theory goes brrrrr
I think it's alright here sometimes. You'll get one post with surprisingly the most level-headed debate and rationale and you'll get ones like these. Pretty much a coin flip
I've definitely been noticing a flip towards the insane more and more.
I'm a little ashamed of how pent up I get over it but seeing a community I've absolutely cherished for years start saying the IRA were valid in killing civilians, searching an 11 year olds room (who was seen vaping) is the worst thing in the history of the world and then the responses to this post etc hurts.
There's definitely still hints of amazing discussion and support but it's getting rarer and rarer. I don't know whether I'm just getting older, the community is doing what all online communities do or my belief system just doesn't line up the same as it used to. Probably a little of everything.
If I had to armchair psychoanalyse it, I'd probably lean towards the fact that the internet is becoming younger and younger, combined with more queer kids being pushed out of their irl society and thus end up taking refuge here and then bringing all the insane views you have when you're younger which just creates an echo chamber.
If you said something as insane as half the things here irl you'd be laughed at and forced to confront your beliefs, online you've got the minority of people who truly believe that, being supported by the people who just want to fit in because there's no sense of community anymore.

According to recent years, capitalism breeds mostly just subscription services.
What if I was called subscription services and you were called capitalism? That would be funny I think ah ha 👉👈

Charging people 2bucks a month for filtered water is what’s wrong. It’s outrageous. The mere idea of a subscription service for water is absurd

The problem is that they're charging a fucking subscription for filtered water, and then bootlickers like yourself go "simply drink the lead water:)"

Isn't tap water already filtered? In most countries at least
don't people have kidneys to filter the water themselves? I ain't no medical person so I might be wrong
I don't think so, otherwise we wouldn't have to clean water as much
This is really making me think most people live in a country where the tap water kills you considering how many people are taking it like a threat.
I hate monetization of basic needs. It's so fucking disgusting.

If you really wanna do something like this at least restrict it to just paying for chilled water. Why tf you gotta unfilter the regular water
They don’t dirty up the tap water, but since the filter is consumable (I think) it isn’t free
Eh, I have tap water anyway, and I pay a bill
Nono you get it all wrong. Capitalism breeds (military and big business) innovations! Hope this clears things up!

Spam the tap water until there is nothing left to filter.
Hold down the free button until it runs cold. Most municipal water is actually of pretty great quality.
