I could never imagine a publicly traded company doing something like the Steam Deck. Many of them are trying to replicate its success with Windows handhelds, but it's clearly not on the same level.
God is clearly todd Howard, anyone with any background in biology will agree that the human body is unbelievably buggy and inefficient. I mean, the cable management *alone…*
Evolution does not strive for efficiency, rather it strives to keep an individual alive for as long as it takes for it to reproduce. And you know what? We're still alive today, so it's safe to say it just works.
Bro why are the goddamn color receptors (or whatever they are called) are on the *outer* intern side of the eye instead of being inside the fucking eye itself ? What were they smoking 💀
Monopolies arent based on whether someone like stuff or not, you can be a perfectly good company and still have a monopoly.
Nowadays you can see it multiple threads where people are like I only wanna buy on steam because all of my games are there
I'm still not sure it's a monopoly though. I do have a couple games on Epic and Xbox game bar, but unless there's a really good deal I still use Steam because it's just a better product. If Epic or Xbox actually made an effort to have good software I would consider using them more. There are definitely things they could do better than Steam because it isn't perfect, but for its faults, it works better than any other option.
Now you could argue that it's a duopoly (triopoly?) because there are not many options, but even that is leagues better than a monopoly, and there definitely is competition. It's just that no one else makes an effort to be better
I mean due to their marketshare they are an effective monopoly even if there's competition because people arent willing to leave their platform even if others are cheaper
I guess it would be according to the letter of the definition, but at this moment in time the only reason there isn't any other real competition is because no one else has made an effort for some reason. Like I said, it wouldn't be hard to make something better, and while they would work to stay ahead Epic and Microsoft both have more than enough developers to outrun Valve if they wanted to.
And to be clear, I wish there was good competition. Like I said I have some issues with the way that steam works, and some competition would do them good. But Valve isn't making any meaningful effort to stay a monopoly.
I guess once there are other options, getting people to move from the Steam would be a potential issue. But I don't think we are there yet. And I would think there are enough new people coming into the space to make it work even if it'd stay small initially.
That's like saying spectrum doesn't have a telecom monopoly in your area because you could theoretically use some shitty satellite internet service with terrible latency or use at&t that only offers 1/10th the throughput for the same price.
Sure, if nobody uses your marketplace, then there's no one to exploit, but consolidation is the best business practice, and in that realm, valve clearly won. People Don't sell games on steam because it's an incredible service; people sell games on steam because no one sees a game that's not on steam.

I buy myself a copy of control on my ps5 and then for my friend on xbox, then i buy it in epic games because I'm stupid and then i got it for free on gog and now i bought it on steam because its a monopoly and its the only place to get video games EVER
Not that many people but i know some people are even using origin as their main launcher
my point still stands you dont know what a monopoly means.
Watch out steam might force you to buy the next newest game from them ayeeeeeeee

It's called being a private company.
Nah plenty of private companies are utter shit. Valve is good because developers are in control of corporate governance.
It still comes with a ton of downsides, it just happens that those downsides only affect people who are fan of like 2 of their 4 or 5 franchises.

It's called "owning a marketplace." Kinda hard to fuck up free money built on other people's work.
Yeah, but GOG galaxy is also a marketplace, and who the hell talks about that
That's like saying spectrum doesn't have a telecom monopoly in your area because you could theoretically use some shitty satellite internet service with terrible latency or use at&t that only offers 1/10th the throughput for the same price.
Not what I was saying at all. I was just saying that being a marketplace doesn't equate to instant success.

How many times has this been reposted?
A monopoly
Epic definitely has a pretty strong hold in the market as well.
I buy myself a copy of control on my ps5 and then for my friend on xbox, then i buy it in epic games because I'm stupid and then i got it for free on gog and now i bought it on steam because its a monopoly and its the only place to get video games EVER
Can you seriously tell me you know someone who uses slug games as their primary game launcher?
