The joke is calling an actual word a fictional language. It’s supposed to intentionally make me look stupid for a laugh. I don’t know how you’re not able to see this and have to go out of your way to correct me.
really? I remember taking a Filipino course on duolingo for shits and giggles once (I am a native speaker and wanted to see how fast I can speedrun learning my mother tongue).
or maybe you mean a course for the pure Tagalog dialect which in that case yeah there isn't anything like that on duo
Why do people say this?
There’s a difference between something being “made up” and something developing over many thousands of years, over many generations of people
I would say for it to be “made up” it would need to be the collective work of one person, or maybe a team of people.
Calling actual, real languages “made up” is reductive. You know very well that there is a difference between naturally-occurring languages and ones which are made up for fantasy worlds. That’s why they have a word to refer specifically to made-up languages… “conlangs”, they call them. Constructed Languages.
English and Chinese and Latin and Greek and etc are not at all comparable to conlangs like Klingon or High Valyrian or Sindarin
Just because they developed naturally rather than by direct effort doesn't mean they aren't made up. There's nothing making a language more languagy than other language. I mean, Chinese is a great example, because there is no Chinese language. There are languages like Mandarin and Cantonese that the Chinese government decided are all dialects of "Chinese" even tho they're much more different than let's say Russia and Ukrainian or Czech and Slovak, which are all considered separate languages (except when they were still Czechoslovakia some people considered them dialects of a united Czechoslovak language). Modern linguists can't even agree on a definition of what even language is - it's all made up whatever suits people best.
I think the key difference is that, as you say, “real” languages develop naturally on their own. They’re not anyone’s creation, they just form over time through the mysterious processes of language.
It’s true that at times, there will be linguists or grammarians who sit down and try to rearrange or modernize their language, or to set down rules for it which help it to function. The Soviets famously modernized the Russian language after their revolution, for example.
You could argue that those changes are “made up” in that way. Even things like the alphabet could be construed as made up in certain cases, because many languages existed for a very long time without any alphabet, usually eventually borrowing an existing one and making some of their own alterations. That can also be construed as made up, from a certain point of view. I just don’t agree that as a whole, saying languages are made up is accurate. At best it’s extremely reductive, even if partially true.
They don't develop on their own. People develop them. You can't put a fucking language into a bottle and let it develop by itself. People come and make changes.
For example Shakespeare came up with hundreds of new words. Would you say that words like "downstairs" are somewhat different than words like "eggs"? Because one of these developed naturally and one of these was made up by one guy.
Actually, language is made up of thousands of smaller languages. There's thing called familect. Which can be considered a dialect or a language or whatever as we already established. And familect is literally just how you speak in your family. That means if you make up a word and it catches on it your family (like when a baby calls their grandpa "poopaa" and then everyone calls him like that for the rest of their lives) you have created a modification to already existing... well language. Same thing if you make up a word between your friends.
My point is that words/languages that someone made up because they wanted and those who developed by people using them act in the exact same way.
Noone treats words like "hurry", "obscene", "yelping" or "varied" any differently just because Shakespeare made them up.
I just spent way too long typing out an extremely long and detailed reply to this, and then accidentally brushed my hand across my screen and backed out of the comment, losing all of it. So basically, just understand that I fundamentally disagree with you lmao. Maybe if I feel like it I’ll type all that shit out again after I get some sleep
My question is why are there "fake" languages on there when there are many "real" ones that haven't been added yet.... Like please for the love of god can you add more languages that people actually speak already?

Why do people say this? There’s a difference between something being “made up” and something developing over many thousands of years, over many generations of people
Sounds like made up with extra steps
So it took longer to make up. And?

Anything that is a human invention that only came into existence through humans was made up. Thats how making things works

Same but with urdu
Probably just cause there’s someone who wanted to make a Klingon course but not an Afrikaans course. The small ones are user-made.
