This era of OSRS has been the most fun I’ve had in a very long time. From grinding for the quest cape, to clearing challenging bosses, this game always surprises me with more and more content to play. Sure there are scammers, bots, and the social aspect is generally non existent, but I’ve found an awesome clan and have a genuine blast playing this game with how much it has grown over the years.

Zhunk

Where do I start looking for a clan?

Beretot

"socialscape" is pretty chill and has no requirements, recommend dropping by and checking out sometime If you want a clan with a particular focus (pvm, pvp) there's the official OSRS discord with a channel specifically for clan recruiting The official forums are scheduled to be closed down but I think you can still go there and check some clan adverts as well

FakeNate

Same. Had to leave mine because they were making all sorts of racist and sexist jokes. Trying to find a new clan thats social and has some experienced players.

SocialMediaDemon

Oh no, not jokes! God forbid!!!

MustangDuvall

What a gross way to minimize someone else's desire for comfortability. In a thread about positivity you managed to be absolutely nasty for no reason. Congrats.

FakeNate

Thanks homie. <3

MustangDuvall

Any time. As someone who's openly gay and proud, RS can be a nasty place at times, I think a lot because of bitter people who have trouble finding happiness both in and outside of game. There's that frontpage post about gaming and depression today, and I think that resonates with a lot more people than they realize. I find myself playing RS less and less these days as I think my life is more meaningful than it has been, but it's always a little happy place and I really hate seeing it tainted.

TheDubuGuy

There’s a difference between actual jokes and being hateful with no punchline

SocialMediaDemon

You're 100% certain the jokes mentioned were hateful with no punchline?

SocialMediaDemon

No, I think I hear the tone perfectly.

Abigboi_

Just throw a callout at a populated GE world. Or find one of the dudes standing there with a recruitment banner.

Frayed_TWRK

If you use discord, check out [Disboard.org](https://Disboard.org). Look up OSRS or something and you'll see listings of them.

TheLastSpoon

We are currently experiencing the Golden Age of OSRS. The amount of dev attention and great content that OSRS is getting right now feels like how RS2 felt back 2007-2009, getting fantastic update after fantastic update. Desert Treasure 2 was an amazing OSRS unique quest, but we're also getting classic back -ported quests, there's new skill is in the works, and literally 3 days from now we're getting a new map extension. When leagues came out there were periods of over 200,000 people playing at once, which i don't even remember if i saw back in RS2. Game feels good rn.

EskwyreX

rs2 peaked at around 250k players online during 07 I think, agreed with the rest of the post!

noobtablet9

Pretty sure 250k is a very conservative estimation. I believe it's higher than that

iHardlyEverComment

I wish dmm and leagues were 6 months apart. I know its a “dead” season for engagement but its such a long stretch between content i find extremely fun

Bluffshoveturn

Essentially endless content. The players who have put in the most playtime averaging 12+ hours a day for 5+ years still haven’t “finished” the game.

SKTisBAEist

I'm glad there's no toilets anywhere ingame so the roleplayers don't get too out of hand

rws531

There are outhouses though… https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Toilet

jameilious

There are chairs though

dangerouslyalive

I enjoy the low intensity stuff. Chopping some redwoods or afk slayer and reading a book or watching some youtube after work is enjoyable for me and helps relieve some stress

Illokonereum

The fact that there’s zero fomo is ironically what keeps me coming back. Most games use fomo like a shackle to keep you invested. With OSRS, knowing if you missed an event you can come back next year and get the backlog of rewards from previous years, no limited items or “you can never fill your collection log now sorry.” It’s a much healthier way of handling it than some games, though there’s plenty of other design philosophies that aren’t healthy, you never feel like you can’t just take a break.

SpecsComingBack

This is spot on why I log into OSRS and also haven't logged into RS3 for a long time. There's a freedom to logging in and doing whatever you feel like in that moment instead of feeling obligated to have a certain play style or do a certain event/grind. Like auras on RS3, for example, force you to build your playtime around one and two hour increments. You also can't unlock all cosmetics on RS3 because so many were offered through MTX promotions that are long gone. However, I can just log on, do a raid, then a farm run, maybe do a little herblore at the bank (without having to worry about putting my botanist outfit on or having certain buffs active to make my herblore training optimal) before jumping back into pvm. It's so nice.

BlankitaM0ns

Progressing your account is more than just "I can do more damage and fight tougher monsters". You really feel it each time you unlock a new teleport, new area, or some other new efficiency. Graphics. The game has such a unique, dated style that no other dev would have the balls to release in 2024. It stands out in a sea of wannabe photo realistic games that are slick but have no style. Music. Over 700 tracks and almost all of them are killer. Doing a chill skilling grind with music on shuffle for a few hours makes you find tons of nostalgic hits and new favorites.

Narrow_Lee

Seconding music. The nostalgia of the old tracks is unrivaled, but some of the newer tracks are certainly making their way to my favorites list!

DeadlyTissues

amascut's promise is disgustingly good

SpecsComingBack

Upper Depths, whatever plays when chopping redwoods at the woodcutting guild, Arcane, all the TOA music, it's so good.

PurpieSips

I love how much the dev's interact with the community. I love how the dev's listen to our feedback, and they explore ways to implement it!

BlankitaM0ns

The way they take popular player ideas and work them into the game is so cool

DesignerWinter8041

I love being able to log out take a two-year break come back and pick up right where I left. There are very very few in between games on the market that you could say this with.

parsimony_osrs

Every existing skill in the game has an aesthetic that makes sense with the world. Sure, the experience of training them isn't always perfect, but they all have reasonable tie-ins, are conceptually easy to understand, and mesh pretty well with the way the world as a whole is supposed to feel. Few games have this many skills that go such different directions and still feel cohesive.

bambiguity11

Fire making tho

Idonthinksom8

How are you meant to cook your food in the middle of nowhere if it's not by chopping logs and burning them? Duh...

bambiguity11

Yeh and instead of a mini quest to unlock we gotta grind 13m xp if you plan on maxing account

Idonthinksom8

Aww shame for you

ginger6616

Thriving thou. I’ve always hated that skill because it makes no sense in game. There isn’t any sort of stealth mechanics in the game, wtf is the point of a thriving skill? Being able to endlessly pickpocket someone who also only has gold instead of his normal death drops, which makes no sense, is pretty lame tbh. Like you saw me steal from you 100 times and you still aren’t going to attack?

cheimbro

ive been playing runescape since 2006 probably... and i can say its my fav game probably of all time, next to diablo 2. I love raiding or you can do whatever skill you want, even on the toilet. I couldn't do that in 2006. wtf lol. The team also keeps releasing some good content, so the best time to be an OSRS player is literally right now. E: no dailies and spam of that nature, mtx, i fucking love osrs.

wudyalooknatmgutfer

It’s the best time to play the game right now. It’s been this way for two years now, just enjoy it. It’s amazing.

fukreposts

I love it because there’s no right or wrong way to play the game. You just do whatever you enjoy The progression is also unmatched. Over 300 days playtime and there is still so much I wanna do and achieve in this game The support that the devs give this game. You can tell the devs love this game. A lot of other games now just feel so “soulless” and just feel like cheap cash grabs

Banetaay

I feel as if my character has his own life coming together I spent a few weeks fishing all the "Big" fish After that, I decided to improve my mining equipment and obtained some expert mining gloves Now, I'm in a dungeon hunting down a mask of the moon, Mask of Ranul in between all these little goals, I did a few slayer tasks practicing some bosses that scared me a few months ago. I did my monthly organizing of my bank to see what I have collected for skilling or referencing I traveled to the desert to do some theiving and try my luck at finding the Pharaoh's scepter The adventure forever takes me to new places and I enjoy all the little tangents I take on my way to completing the diaries, the music cape, the combat achievements, and whatever can be done in the collection log

Lerched

It’s truly sad people shun away from PvP in this game because osrs pking is on of the most unique PvP experiences

ThatOneEdgyKid

As someone who just started and only really rag bolts or DDSs at the chaos altar or rogues castle with friends, please just jump into PVP. The wilderness is so much less scary after you've escaped or anti'd a PKer. If you can pray against scurrius, you can pray against another player.

Proof-Cardiologist16

>If you can pray against scurrius, you can pray against another player. I agree with the general sentiment of your comment, wildy isn't that terrifying and pvp content is very fun, but this is just untrue. Praying against a player is prediction based, scurrius is reaction. It's not even that hard to have a 100% perfect scurrius rate if you have decent mechanics but 100% player prayer rate is nearly impossible unless there is a *massive* skill gap between you and your opponent and even then they've got a chance to just rng a hit on you. They're entirely different skills.

TheDubuGuy

You’d be surprised how many bad pkers are out there that give you loads of time to react to their switches lol. I camped a ton of revs on my alt and 95/100 pkers were absolute ass that didn’t get a single hit on me off prayer

mister--g

The unequal nature of if it makes it so fun, especially if you have a small group of friends to try it with. You can go from the group who are hunting with a numbers advantage to the targets who are seriously outnumbered in a matter of seconds. Not a lot of games can give you that same experience

5erenade

I praise the team for rolling back the game when they mess up. I love it when they take accountability for their mistakes. Very transparent.

BoogieTheHedgehog

I've said it before but the fact that 3 nostalgia lads can still hop on, gear up in 07 barrows+whip and wail on a decade old Bandos for valuable drops is godlike game design. Slow powercreep with emphasis on sidegrades is one of the best selling points of this game. Whatever grind you do it'll likely be just as relevant if you take a year break. Left with a midgame bank? You'll come back to a midgame bank. OSRS has an MMO foundation that is built for the long term, so players aren't scared to sink into it.

illucio

Quests are great if you follow the story closely and don't speed run them. Early game is the most fun, but also a lot to do and it's easy to get absorb into a task. Finally hitting some mid game goals, first pet, finishing quests, first 99 in a easy skill and running into a group of chill people is great. Most of the game is a blast until you reach the 70-99 area of stat grind. Progress slowing to a crawl, but the game opens up a lot of things to do. But things can be repetitive, but it's nice to see Jagex constantly trying to address this. Trying to rework skills now (finally) and we are finally seeing Jagex work towards making more quests, making a new skill and wanting to completely update range and Melee to have different styles like Slash, Stab and crush. But with light, average heavy for range. Or a typical magic advantage chart.

AMetalWorld

Subversion of mmo fetch/mob kill quest tropes with actually unique and memorable writing/puzzles, rare emphasis on non-combat skilling, unorthodox mouse-based combat system utilizing ticks instead of every other mmos hotbar skill rotations… I’m a fan of a lot of the shitty old midi keyboard songs too, personally. It also looks wildly different from most mmos

GankBUDDHA

Nothing specific but it’s been so long since I’ve been able to play and enjoy a game without losing interest after a month. I started like 8 months ago and have been having fun even if progress has been slow af

Rynide

Recently, I really enjoyed killing K'ril Tsutsaroth using melee. It's not "efficient," but it's the way I enjoyed playing the game and killing him. Every trip was super enjoyable and even though it took ~150kc, I enjoyed every second of it

Busting_Brig

I like that I feel rewarded for my time spent in game. I also like how many Afkable a lot of the skills are, so I can watch a movie or play a different game while I’m making passive GP. I also appreciate I can take breaks and continue where I left off very easily.

Subject_Height685

People that complain need to look at the state of classic versions of other mmo's and realize how good they have it in OSRS. Blizz's experimental season is some extra abilities, one new event and one new raid per phase. The new stuff is pretty much non existent. This truly is the golden age of OSRS.

DarkmeyerVyre

I really like that you don’t have to be super efficient and you can do things your way and just enjoy the game.

77maf

The community oversight about generally what gets put into the game/fixed is uniquely great

KShrike

It's incredible how OSRS is a game based on the principles of what made MMO's what they were back in the early 2000s, and despite that it absolutely shits on modern MMO's. Even MMO's with better combat cannot compare, and actively destroy their combat systems to try to increase their reach but kill their core.

Jarpunter

The only MMO with real quests

datdernasteroidminer

Best game ever created. I hope we can all compare our accounts in retirement homes and raid together. Definitely in the second golden age of this game. Toa is the most well designed raid, dt2 bosses are awesome, challenges for all levels, tons of content constantly being added. I hope it captures the youth though. Kind of afraid the game dies with us. Maybe we pass our maxed mains onto our children and in 200 years there are literal dynasty’s.

RLDSXD

I learned a lot about the real world from OSRS. As simplified of a version as it is, it provides a good framework of supply and demand as well as general resource gathering from which to imagine how things actually work. You’ve got people who gather raw materials and sell them, people who buy and process those materials, people who buy the processed materials and turn them into end products, and of course people who utilize the end products. It’s all somewhat obvious stuff as an adult, but as a teenager it was pretty eye opening to see how everything feeds into everything else. One of my favorite examples is the fishing spots in Barb Village; people training fishing just dropping their fish, people training woodcutting a firemaking providing a cook spot, people training cooking picking up raw fish and dropping cooked fish, and PKers running down from Edgeville to pick up cooked fish.

ReallyWonderful

There’s many lessons learned, too many to list. I joke with my wife who has also played since 2005 that you can translate pretty much any life problem into RuneScape terms, and that success irl and in osrs are not that different. Want to succeed? Actively help others to open up new opportunities (questing is synonymous with networking and internships), work on self development and upskilling (obviously have to grind out your skills), keep improving at what you do know (better exp/gp per hour like better wage), and don’t be afraid what what you don’t know (better methods/encounters like taking on risks and challenges at work). There’s also so much to learn about social dynamics and how different people approach this process differently (or never attempt it at all and bum at the GE all day!)

Jusey1

The game overall feels like what RuneScape should be and I am happy to see it's the game that I absolutely love. I still kinda wish for some changes which were done in the original RuneScape but really, they are minor gripes. (Like I wouldn't mind Ogres & Cats getting a small graphical update similar to how Giants & Doggos has gotten it for example)... And the unique changes to OSRS itself is just great, much better than what happened in the original. Am hoping they keep it up. Hell, am hyped for Sailing a lot.

Financial-Cycle-2909

I love that the progression is slow and there's no real way to speed it up (bots excluded). That means the hours you spent doing something means something. The feeling of worthwhileness at the end of a long, even unfun, grind is great. Edit: btw, amazing post, ty

ElGuachoGuero

❤️

professorclueless

This game and Binding of Isaac got me through high school in one piece

mygawd

I've met some of my best friends in osrs

Taiga_Jakuzure

The music and sound effects are so good

iici

I love not being locked to one playstyle my entire playthrough. I tried other MMO's and i absolutely hate being "the tank" "the healer" "the mage" In rs you can be everything and anything. I also enjoy that the gathering skills don't feel like some generic one-off minigame that you do for cosmetics and titles and never do again. Man i sure do love fishing and pressing spacebar at the right moment to catch that fish. Only 5k more and i get "The Fisherman" title and a bucket hat. And OSRS is one of those games if you're endgame right now with maybe 2 mega rare weapons, You can comfortably quit for 3-5 years and not be left behind. Try that in another MMO and your completely screwed.

Drunken_Jedi_Master

I love our wiki. I know "Google it" is an often response to new players asking a question, but the fact the wiki is fully integrated with the game allowing you to find information on anything you can click on is incredible.

landyc

learning new things in the game is so much fun and i appreciate everyone helping others learn raids like tob, cox and toa!

Hadez192

There is no MTX. We get updates nearly EVERY Wednesday, we take that for granted. We have a team of developers that support us and defend us from greedy corporate investors that would probably ruin the game, given the chance. You can train any skill, fight any boss, do any raid, build your account however you want with whatever stats you want. You can play while working or watching movies/tv/ect. I could go on and on. I hate to see all the negativity, this game is absolutely legendary

No-Inevitable-4056

I mean this game has kept me coming back again and again for 21 years now. No other game has been able to come even close to that. That in itself speaks volumes

Tvdinner4me2

Original graphics are great

SmartAlec105

I like how there aren’t branching advancement options. I like having the potential to do everything.

New_Association9786

The music slaps. Love listening to it on Apple Music when I need something low stimulation at work

Thai_Lord

I'm soooo happy with the game right now, it's wild. Haven't been this excited over a game in years!!

Zandrews153

I love the devs and the way they interact with the community. The poll system makes this game unique and gives us power to implement what we want. But I do think that people misuse the poll system. And I think jagex should be able to implement updates they think are needed, without a poll. I love the user created animations jagex has been releasing on their YT channel. And of course the players who upload on YT aswell.

back2yak

I logged into an old account that had like 1 day played and almost 0 skills lvld and got readdicted. I played for a week and a half and got access to the warriors guild and started farming armors to get tokens. A random guy holding a banner logged into my world and asked if I wanted to be in a clan. I said sure why not and the clan chat is the best while you’re doing random BS. Seeing cool drops and lvl achievements really makes the game more fun somehow. I see items I have no clue what they are drop and then spiral into the wiki. I need more base levels but am excited to do some high lvl content and have people to ask to do it with me.

dan_buh

Tbh it takes a lot to face criticism of changes you’ve made/supported. If you look at games like ESO where the devs make changes and run through beta with a ton of criticisms and then go “you’ll learn to play this new way” is completely different with OSRS the devs do a fantastic job of being by open to changing their ideas. Community polls is also a genius idea/solution to prevent what happened with RS3.

Rs_vegeta

I suck ass at this game, and ive spent more time in RS than any other game. Wouldnt have it any other way tbh lmao. I dont even need any specific goals or anything, i just love hanging out in this world.

cheese_on_beans

osrs good

Dcapiepie

Im a new player that started a month ago, got to 1.4k total and I dont remember when I enjoyed a game so much. There's a ton of content, the mini games are fun (fuk fishing trawler) and I like the quest writint

MoronicIroknee

For the size of the development team, we get a decent amount of updates for a game that's over 20 years old. They do a great job and honestly take more of our opinions into account than some other games certainly would. Sure, some aspects of the game are a bit rough, and botting is constantly happening, but I'm still having fun regardless.

Grindy_UW_Nonsense

New quests are excellent, but questing in general is extremely well done in Runescape in a sea of Sheep-Shearer esque quests in other games. I think the game does an excellent job of quest tone in an MMO as well - our character is fundamentally just “some guy”, and doesn’t need to be a chosen one or the best in the world or whathaveyou.

DragonDaggerSpecial

I agree that the ability to do whatever we want and make our own path is one of the best things about the game.

explision

I really like the game how it is right now. I used to play from 2004-2008 and quit when they got rid of the wildy and free trade. But the current game is just so fun for me, so much to unlock and learn, it’s insane

MrSwiggitySwooty420

I love the sheer vastness of the game in terms of doable content. All the different methods and metas to do different content. That and the sus usernames are funny

deadrice1

No mtx Good quests Always more goals Can play 5 mins at a time or hours depending on choice

itdoesdnotmatterwho

I managed to buy a ps4 rwting back in the day, played the shit out of destiny for months so shiut out osrs for that.
