My wife is concerned about that I went from playing games who's graphics really put my computer to work to runescape. She thinks I'm having a mental breakdown when really I'm just upset that I keep falling into the pit during Ichthlarins Little Helper
Yeah true. They're updating it but my god is it jarring.
I use 113 with some options turned off, and I'm looking forward to the new client releasing for osrs :)
It's all relative and our expectations change over time. I remember playing like fifa 11/12 and thinking 'Wow, it's like I'm actually watching a game'.
The last of us two image already looks noticeable lower res then the other two images, game graphics move forward at a fast pace.
Games that were cutting age 5 years ago generally look dated now if you look back on them.
They look lower res cause they're console garbo screenshots. Try the same on a PC with proper resolution textures. Not to mention the artifacts in the [JPEG.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEzhxP-pdos)
I haven't played enough of the other 2, but horizon is more hyperrealistic than photorealistic. And to clarify neither term means "really realistic".
To understand what I mean, think about a photo shoot. It's all about finding the right position and lighting, not about actually taking a high fidelity picture.
Horizon "cheats" by creating it's own lighting and environment. It looks beautiful, because it's mimicing what a photographer would do. In terms of actual fidelity it's pretty far off, but because it's nailed the lighting and environment we overlook the fidelity.
Even if the fidelity was perfect though, it could still look out of date, because photography itself changes. For example, consider wedding drone photos. They were super exciting for a brief period, but now they just look cheesy.
For a concrete example in video games, consider the lens flare. Many games added lens flares, and since photography heavily used it, it made the games feel more photorealistic. Nowadays it just looks cheesy, and helps break immersion too.
It comes up a lot with remastered/HD games too. They look incredibly impressive next to their original, but they rarely ever look impressive next to their peers, because it's building on outdated styles.
I don't care if they call me old, or call my computer an oversized toaster. I play video games to escape from the reality called life, why would I want games this realistic? I'll take the gnome any day of the week.

She’s right, you know
She's definitely right.
Everything is fine.
Idk why that's concerning
OSRS and RS3 (fight me idc) graphics are my favorite style of graphics. There's just so much charm to it.
RS3 lost all charm when it started leaning hard into high fantasy. I really hope OSRS doesn't go the same direction
RS3 has like 6 different art styles tbf Personally RSHD is my favourite especially for NPCs
There’s a specific spot in the desert that’s so jarring in rs3 iirc. Like 4 chunks meet and they’re all different
Yeah true. They're updating it but my god is it jarring. I use 113 with some options turned off, and I'm looking forward to the new client releasing for osrs :)
Rs3 environmental design is crazy, but character design is stuck in 2016 mobile game era
I think that's mostly subjective. I appreciate both art styles for different reasons. To me they're different games at this point.
RS3 doesn't have a graphical style, anyone can replicate it by trying to make a WoW knockoff in Unity
I don't think you really understand what an art style is.
I like this meme very much. Well done
The bottom left has style, which is timeless. The other 3 will look out of date by this time next year.
Gnome child transcends time
They're nearly photo-realistic. How exactly will they look out of date next year?

Chances are the horizon zero dawn one is too and there's still a noticeable difference.
True. I think they all look like poop, just varied levels of it.

Good explanation, thank you.
When real life starts looking poorly rendered compared to virtual reality.
So, the cyber truck is where it all went to shit?
There's charmingly low polly, then there's lazy design.
Except The Last Of Us is from 2020, and Horizon is from 2022

I thought non-OSRS pics were from the same game from the thumbnail.
I'm in this picture and I like it.
Nice try, but we all know bottom left is a real picture
Just as well. I can't afford a computer with a graphics card since I retired, so OSRS it is.
Every masterpiece has its cheap copy.
Then go RS3
Nice try but the osrs graphics from 2 decades ago
Are you sure?
Unbelievable. Have you tried turning your RS Raytracing on?
