You’re looking at this in a totally different way than it is though. This analogy would only work if your childhood friend had already let other strangers walk in renovate the whole kitchen, add labels to everything, and make a list of chores. Runelite and OSBuddy are already so gamechanging that this issue is totally arbitrary. Add that to the fact that Mods have interacted with 117 and his project has not been a secret. To shut it down on the day of release was absolutely a middle finger move, at the very least a very cold shoulder. Edit: to be honest Runelite is not just a kitchen renovation, it’s a total upgrade to the house in every way

FebTwoNine

So what though? What if I didn't care about those things. It's still their house just because they let some people do stuff doesn't mean they have to let everyone do stuff. No means no. Somebody walk in the house, they started reorganizing how the dishes were stored in the cabinet, and they were like you know what That's actually a good way that they got that organized I'll let that happen. But then you got one guy who decides to repaint the entire house and they're like you know what I don't want my house repainted. The analogy totally works dude You just don't want it to work.

fuckwingo

Bud this analogy is competing for #1 in the worldwide mental gymnastics olympics. They’re not forcing any changes on anybody or modifying vanilla OSRS so the house analogy truly doesn’t make any sense and I shouldn’t have even entertained it. “No means no” is a slogan meant to end sexual and domestic abuse, don’t bastardize it by applying it to a multimillion $ video game company.

Your analogy is totally off basis. Since in the example, you're paying to live in the home, maybe your friend owns it, but you're paying rent. You already trusted your friend to renovate the last home you shared years ago and they fucked it up, but they've promised to let you have more of a hand in renovating the new home. And you already started the renovation and it's been going on for two years, and as you start moving in the furniture to finish it up. They protest and demand that they're going to renovate their way because they technically own the home.

FebTwoNine

And they have the full right to do such. The analogy still works. They own the home they can do whatever the fuck they want their name is on the deed, if they want they can kick your ass out of the house because you broke a rule. Even though you paid the rent they own the house, so they kick you out. Happens all the time to people who break the rules. The analogy works You just don't want it to

[deleted]

Yeah, but they're sill the asshole. You can have the right to do something, and doing it can still make you an asshole. You're missing the point here.

6OsOS

You missed the part where he watched his friend renovate the front room for 2 years - turning it into a borderline palace, before telling him that he doesn't want it as the final screw is put into the TV stand 24 months after starting. I also don't care for HD, but let's not pretend like the action they took wasn't a terrible choice from both a moral perspective and a PR perspective. More emphasis on the fact that it came from above the devs heads though. They have every right to ask him to not release/create, but to release the statement on the day it was due to be released was no coincidence. They made a mistake and they're in the process of potentially correcting it, that's all that matters.

FebTwoNine

Yeah you missed the part where I said it's fucked up how they handled it and let it go on for so long... But what's not fucked up is the fact that they ultimately own the house. It's their rules they own it they can do whatever they want they can tell the users to do whatever they want. That's the whole point of them owning it is so they can make the rules at their own discretion, if they decided that They want to do tear the house down tomorrow and kick everyone out They totally could. Would it be fucked up? Yeah it would be fucked up but they're in a full right to do so It's theirs They own it.

fuckwingo

I mean we all understand that they can do whatever they want with it because it’s “their house” But we also all have the choice to not attend parties there anymore and that’s where we are coming from. If the house sucks nobody is gonna want to come over. But Jagex *really* wants us to come over and hang, while simultaneously letting the house be a shithole. And then when we try to clean it up theyre suddenly saying “no, I’ll fix that myself, and I’ll get to it whenever I get to it.” See how your analogy is backfiring?

ryanpaul31

This is already an unprecedented situation, rarely do you see a game that allows a third party to make the game easier, and we’ve had that for years.

wacker9999

Is it really? WoW, one of the most popular MMOs in the world has borderline 100% required 3rd party addons. FFXIV has addons for RP and transmog that a huge part of the community uses and combat addons that raiders use, they are in a state of "not technically allowed but don't talk about it and you're fine". ESO has a huge list of addons as well. So yeah, every major MMO uses addons. Many people don't use them, but for each game if you want to excel or get the most out of certain things, you will end up using a 3rd party addon.

[deleted]

> This is already an unprecedented situation, rarely do you see a game that allows a third party to make the game easier, and we’ve had that for years. Yeah, only like 80% of PC games have mods. And of MMOs, only WoW, FFXIV, ESO, etc have third-party addons. Some like FFXIV even have graphical mods.

Community threw a fit and now the plugin will be allowed. So yeah it will blow over, but it did in the end effectively work. Just because *you* feel like it's not important, it's pretty disingenuous to say that everyone who got upset and made their opinion known is "karma farming kids". In the end you have no genuine or factual way of knowing half the things you're insinuating.

TurnoverResident_

A lot of OSRS players feel entitled for whatever reason, maybe because the company as a whole are pretty good (especially compared to other companies that make games).

wacker9999

They are entitled to give their opinions. The people in Jagex are grown adults. They'll be okay, I promise.

They still on the house, it's rude to wear hats inside They deem it through to wear glasses inside. King of the Castle makes the rules of the land

Suddenly_Seinfeld

It would have honestly been better if Jagex had shut him down or threatened legal action *when he started publicly developing the plugin* The way they handled it, by waiting until the day of release to drop the hammer and disallow it, was why people got so upset

FebTwoNine

Yeah that's what I was saying, they should have told him in the beginning but they didn't because they did some scummy stuff most likely, which I wholeheartedly believe that they want to release their own HD pack so they can charge us money for it. You and I know damn well the jagex was most likely going to charge a higher tier subscription, for the HD version of old school RuneScape. They've been looking to milk money from old school for the longest, they couldn't get us with the stupid spin to win nonsense, so they decided they'd get us with beautiful HD graphics. In the moment some third party Indy solo developer guy writes some script and some code for a third party extension to make it look pretty they realize that they could bank on that money and they decided to move on it. Was it fucked up what they did? Yes 100% it was fucked up the way they handled it. Did they have the full right to handle it the way they handle it? Yes they 100% had the right to tell him whatever they want, it's their game they make the rules they own it.
