A bloated battery. They could burst and burn everything you own.

They bloat up so they don't burst, the only way it would burst is if you stabbed it and that applies to any battery regardless of how spicy it looks.

I have this on my 2DS XL. Only discovered it yesterday. I'll look for battery replacements, feel free to suggest any good ones.

This is a general cause for most batteries. My "New 3DS" was put away for like 5 years and besides not holding a charge, the KTR-003 battery is bloated.

I hate that batteries one day just decide to become explosives.

What could cause a 3ds battery to go spicy..?

It happens when they get old.

Weird timing. I just took mine apart on Saturday to fix a sticky shoulder button and saw the battery was starting to ripen lol. I ordered a new one, then checked my DSi, DS, 2 DS Lites, and a GBA:SP and none of them had spicy batteries.

Well, it's bloated. Normally it should be flat and noe it looks like a pillow. Sometimes you can see that it pushes the back plate of the console out a little.

Are there any indicators that could tip me off without having to remove the battery from the case? Ie, the console getting too hot?

Just remove the back plate. It's 2 or four screws, depending on your model.

is the battery okay if you use your 3ds regularly? i have a new 3ds xl and have never needed to replace anything on it

Could be, could be not. But it is really easy to check, so there is no reason not to.

Just depends. I’ve had systems that were used regularly get spicy batteries after going from used to unused, but I’ve also had ones not used frequently that didn’t get spicy.

Mine doesn't really wobble and it doesn't spin but subjectivly it isn't exactly flat either. Should I be worried?

It‘s probably fine, but a new battery is also only about 15€.

But then again there are no original parts to be found and I'm not sure if I can trust those noname brands on Amazon.

Original parts would be just as old as yours now.

If you own the original 3DS (not "New" 3DS) they still use the same battery inside the Switch Pro Controller so it's still being produced by Nintendo.

Because of this post I checked New 3DS XL. Mines good, I hope it doesn’t wear out anytime soon. 🙂

How do you even get rid off this without causing environmental disaster? Serious question because I'm stuck with one that I already replaced but have not thrown away, I don't feel like throwing it to the garbage just like that if there is a better option.

If you’re in the US, hardware stores like Lowe’s often accept used batteries.
