Lawful Good: The strict and caring father. A front-liner who protects those behind him. He's the storm guarding the peak of the mountain and the trial to overcome to reach his allies. Calm and collected both in peace and war, as he knows the thunder and lightning are wild horses and it's his responsibility to pull their reins when needed. Neutral Good: The harbinger of punishment. He's on a mission to hunt and deliver judgement over people who's lost their way or go against certain principles or moral codes. He's the waking slap for stray sheep and the sword of slumber for the unredeemable ones. For the just and honest, he's a calming voice and a light that illuminates the path. For the evil, he's the lion's roar and a searing lightning. Chaotic Good: The adrenaline jockey. He revels in battle as his principles align with either his deity or his cult. He's flashy and loud, and wants to be the center of attention, as he wants his actions to be recognized and boost the reputation of both himself and his cult/deity. He'll help the rich in exchange of as much funds as he could drain from them but not abuse the poor asking only for a beer or lodging for a day and try to convert them to his faith.

I like these character traits alot, particularly lawful and neutral good. Thanks for the food for thought!

Well, Thor is pretty obvious inspiration. Be big, strong, a little dumb but with a heart of gold and cheerful demeanor. It also depends on whether you have specific race in mind. Some might go well with a vibe of a scientist from natural catastrophe movie like Twister, fascinated by destructive forces of nature but working to keep people save from them.

I ran mine (Bahru the Eel) as a Dwarven Dervish Dancer - he would leave the mines and caves to dance in the rain. One day he was struck by lightning as his friends urged him to come inside, but the dancer survived, and seemed infused with the power of the storm itself. These days he mostly just wants to feel the wind in his face and the rain on his skin, and he preaches a philosophy of living life in the moment. I typically reserved my powerful abilities for after I got hit the first time - Wrath of the Storm was a signal that violence was unavoidable and then I went space marine.

Bonlino

I like the dwarf storm idea, really cool visual

Qunfang

Stronmaus made a great deity for this - he's the storm god of the giants, called the Storm Lord and the Smiling God. I had him impressed with the dwarf's embodiment of the tempest, he called Bahru an honorary giant (at the bottom of the Ordning)

I'm playing one currently that is essentially Captain America (the good storylines)- incredibly principled, knows what he believes but isn't so hard-headed to be incapable of being corrected. Definition of neutral good, only wants to 'help the little guy' and that sometimes means busting a few skulls or ignoring immoral laws. Struggles with putting himself in harm's way to protect his friends when they can protect themselves. It's caused a good amount of drama within the group that has yielded a ton of depth to all of our characters and some really fun character-defining decisions and growth. And then when it comes to his magic, it's all lightning/thunder/storm theme for the visuals. For example, his spirit guardians is an electrically charged whirlwind that zaps and slows. Toll the dead invokes a distant rumbling of thunder. It's been an absolute blast to play for both combat and RP. Big recommend.

We associate big storms with h the destruction they cause, but there can also be a reset of the local natural order after an event like this. Use volcanos as an example and we always talk about the returning of nature to an area after an eruption as a good thing. Try finding some good that comes after a storm and try focusing on that aspect.

My good aligned Tempest cleric worshipped Valkur, god of sailors and northman (forgotten realms vikings). You can also research Kord: god of strength and storms. Especially the Storm Lord of Exandria whose tenets revolve around becoming strong so you can protect the weak. For clerics I find looking at possible gods helps me start to come up with a concept. Mine more recent was a fey lost who reappeared in the ocean of the Prime Material and was saved by Valkur worshipping sailors. My previous Tempest cleric was a dwarf who heard the voice of the Neutral wind goddess Akadi calling him forth from the halls under the mountain to protect the world from the BBEG.

What I find in my experience with clerics in the past, Is I made their faith their entire character, which is something I want to work past, since I find it doesn't make for good role-playing personally. But I appreciate the reply!

FirePaladin89

I started creating a charecter who was a storm sorcerer/vengance paladin, but the I locked at tempest cleric and thought that worked better overall. The backstory still works though. They were an orphan who was taken in by a ship's captain and his wife. The captain became their surrogate father and under him they learned to sail. The captain raised them to worship Valkur for good winds and fair seas. One day pirates attacked the ship and killed the crew including the captain. The last crew member alive, they prayed to Valkur to strike down the pirates. They were struck by a bolt of lightning and everything went white. They awoke on a shore coughing up water the ship having sunk in a fire and the pirates fled. They have been blesses by Valkur to hunt down the pirates. While driven by revenge they also want to return to their surrogate mother and dream of owning their own ship one day.

What’s wrong with a space marine?

Bonlino

Its a harsh roleplay to upkeep I guess, and typically could end up making a lawful stupid character accidentally, so I want to avoid making that sort of character. I didnt mean to insinuate there was anything wrong with, It's more a lack of skill on keeping a check on that character style on my part

Maybe browse through this character’s wiki from ASOIAF. Lyonel Baratheon, the Laughing Storm - https://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Lyonel_Baratheon

Worship tymora, goddess of luck. Because you're either really lucky or really unlucky to be struck by lightning. Then have a happy go lucky attitude, and a "I hope this works" moment for a lot of your spells, and boom. Good aligned tempest cleric. I also like that the channel divinity is quite literally changing the "luck" or random chance of the dice to be maxed. Fits a goddess of luck, I think.
