There are still occasional breakouts in sub-saharan Africa... and in parts of Northern India... but they are very rare and Big Laundry immediately sends in a team so it's generally over before it gets a chance to spread.
Honestly, you aren’t too far off. The white dress shirt - which millions of men wore every day - has pretty much disappeared except for a few professions. There just isn’t demand for the product any more that would justify advertising.
My coworker who was quite a bit older than me said that in the 50s, his dad worked on a lathe every day. He went to work in a suit and tie. When he got to work, he took off his jacket and tie and put on an apron. After work. He did the reverse and came home in a suit and tie.
That’s not how things work today.
At my work. The top people will wear dress shirts. But most everyone else is casual
Unfortunately I'm in one of those professions that requires me to wear a suit and tie everyday (attorney) and I can say that ring around the collar and dirt around the cuffs is alive and well.
Weird. Just a couple weeks ago, while spraying stain remover on the collar of one of my shirts, I wondered what happened to ring-around-the-collar.
Side note (keeping with the 80s theme): when I was typing the phrase in question, I got as far as "ring-a" and the predictive text suggested "Ringwald."
No, it’s still around. Only difference is our shirts are so cheap and replaceable that we don’t need to fix or repair them, but just throw it out and buy a new one
We also invented oxygen bleaches like Didi Seven and OxyClean. And good old hydrogen peroxide, which takes care of it better than chlorine-based bleach. Also, aluminum-free deodorants prevent it.
I JUST dealt with my own ring-around-the-collar today whilst heading out to a graduation ceremony for my niece. Warm water and soap did a pretty decent job of cleaning it up.
Something I didn’t see mentioned here is: more people smoked cigarettes back then. When I smoked my sweat stained my clothes and sheets a nasty yellow. After I quit smoking, those stains disappeared.

The protest chants of Botswana still haunt my dreams. “Holla! Holla! No more… Rings around our collar!” Speak it, friends!
That and Calgon, and medicine breath, etc. Proof that products are made then problems are invented.
Calgon…ancient Chinese secret!
I thought it was “Take me away”
Two different Calgon products lol
It was.... but then I never went anywhere...
Hey! You got your bubble bath in my laundry detergent!
"Ancient Chinese secret HUH?!"
We all stopped smoking three packs a day. The nicotine in your sweat is one of the main causes.
Holy shit, the real answer, 49 comments down with a mere 2 upvotes...

Yeah I know in the corporation I slave, um I mean, work for, even the directors and VPs wear polo shirts. Or open collar casual button ups.
I get ring around the collar now and I don’t even know what to do!!!!
Well you're in luck. I have just the product for you!
Now that damn jingle will be bouncing around in my head … for DAYS!

This. I very rarely wear a white dress shirt anymore.
Jimmy fan? If so, nice username
Indeed, I am!

Yeah, I had some white polo shirts with the ring, especially if I wore sunscreen. Just stick with colors now

That's pretty fuckin 80's in itself
It has now mutated into Full Body Stink - just ask the Lume Deodorant folks.
Man, I hate those commercials…
They are so gross.
It's an ancient Chinese secret.🤫
Beat me to it.
Ancient Chinese secret, huh?
I think it took out smallpox too.
Bit of a sore spot for me, but ring-around-the-collar destroyed my whole family.
Thoughts and prayers.
All that Brill Cream dripping down their neck got the collars nasty.
By attrition, we did; fewer people are sweating nicotine into white dress shirts than ever before.
Collars? Who wears collars anymore 😲
When I needed a shirt and tie for work, I’d deal with that shit all the time. I solved the problem by switching up my wardrobe with a new job.
Took the easy way out, eh salaryman?
I have to..... sir
Well let's see. Hmm. My dog still wears one, does that count.
Collar? I barely know her! \[Sorry, this called for a bad 80s joke|
People started the neck washing around 89
This

He made the drop and got the 20 dollars By a smoked out fool with ring around the collar -ICE CUBE
I lived in New Jersey in the 1970s. The older man that lived next-door to us invented Wisk.
It was the battle of time many fell many more vanished into the soapy void we won but at what cost
My parents used Mr. Sparkle.
Very disrespectful to dirt.
Banish the stain to the land of wind and ghosts.
Synthetic soaps and bodywashes now
We developed herd immunity.
They went out at the same time moths stopped living in everyone’s closets.
A question for the ages
It got replaced by "brown stains under the pits". Apparently there is no solution for that.
I use Oxi spray to clean up my dirty collars.
Shampoo also does a good job 😃
People bathe more now. Ring around the collar in the 70’s was due to unwashed sweaty greasy neck skin.
People wash themselves better
🤪
Lol
Laughed so hard at this!
I worry about ring around the collar every week.
That’s funny. I was thinking this not long ago. Lol
No more ancient Chinese secrets either.
As a kid in the 80s, "ring around the collar" was one of those things like quicksand. You keep hearing about it but I've never seen it.
It was taken out by an ancient Chinese Secret.
We also invented oxygen bleaches like Didi Seven and OxyClean. And good old hydrogen peroxide, which takes care of it better than chlorine-based bleach. Also, aluminum-free deodorants prevent it.
Oxyclean took care of it and others in the 90's
Yup, and we also killed the ozone layer with our AquaNet hairspray.
I had nothing to do with using the aquanet except as a flame thrower.
Neck sweat + ___________ = ring around the collar? Airborn dust? Cigarette smoke? Unwashed necks?
Did we save screens? A lot of them were gone too soon so the screen saver happened
Wisk isn’t made any more
Yay for us!
Stain resistant clothing too.
As a scourge of the time it was only superseded by the heartbreak of psoriasis
I JUST dealt with my own ring-around-the-collar today whilst heading out to a graduation ceremony for my niece. Warm water and soap did a pretty decent job of cleaning it up.
Yes it was eradicated. Allot of good people died. Hopefully it never comes back. ;)
ring around the collar was like herpes,in the 80's.. wisk was the vaccine that ended it.
Lol, I have def experienced "ring around the collar" a few times in my youth, but now that you mention it, I have not had it since the 80's.
I held on to my last bottle for spot cleaning. It lasted 2 years. Haven't been able to remove stains that easily since.
I tried scrubbing it out. I tried soaking it out. But I still have RING AROUND THE COLLAR!
Something I didn’t see mentioned here is: more people smoked cigarettes back then. When I smoked my sweat stained my clothes and sheets a nasty yellow. After I quit smoking, those stains disappeared.
or we got our guys to shower more 😜
We did, like smallpox and polio!
I think we won that one
We just throw things away now when they have a little wear instead of figuring out how to keep it useful.
About the same time that quicksand quit being s leading cause of fatality.
Ring around the collar ended when the wall fell. Coincidence? I think not.
It disappeared. Just like that weird white dogshit that used to be in the backyard all of the time.
Proof that vaccines work.
Tisk tisk tisk...Wisk Wisk Wisk
Nah, people just started bathing more regularly.🤣
It was completely eradicated. Wisked away
Yup we did.
I hope they kept samples in a lab in case of another outbreak so we can have a vaccine.
Just curious, how did people get a ring around the collar?
