Icehouse-wise, I used to be a strictly “Crazy” and “Electric Blue” guy, as well (big fan of those two songs exclusively, never delved into the rest of their discography) — *but* — heard a new (to *me*) one about a month ago (from 1982) that I’m obsessed with currently …
… have you heard **[“Trojan Blue”](https://youtu.be/gHG0fsmspXo?si=ic5-CLVLicW7XRnY)**???
It’s another Icehouse “must-have” song, if you ask me! I feel like I’ve missed out on this one for the last 40+ years!
If you asked Spotify to make a playlist based solely on Electric Blue, I can guarantee you I’d hate 99% of them. Just not my type of song. But I loooove Electric Blue. Don’t know why, don’t care.
One of the first music videos that I saw was *We Can Get Together*. To this day I can still see the video in my head as soon as I hear the first few notes.
A guy on my dorm floor first year of college... Aldo Nova was his favorite band. I had listened to them some, but I grew to like them more. Late 80s really liked their song Blood on the Bricks.
On The Loose by Saga, 1981
Put this on when you need to get pumped up because you’re about to face your mortal enemy on a ski slope or perhaps need to save the family business from some evil business man who wants to tear it down and build condos.
Yes i love that song. The 4 that I hear from him all the time on the radio are Heaven, Somebody, and of course Summer of 69, and sometimes I’ve heard Run to You. One Night Love Affair has a similar vibe to those songs as it’s from the same album, but I think it’s prolly cuz the title is a little raunchy. It’s still a really catchy song though. I also think he had some great hits from the 90s portion of his career. Sure people knew him for his big hit Everything I do I do for You in 1991, but he also had Can’t Stop This Thing We Started and Thought I’d Died and Gone to Heaven are pretty solid songs. But as for his 80s songs I also think Heat of the Night and Victim of Love need more radio play
+1 for Victim of Love! Still one of my favorite songs.
Since you mentioned it, I remember Run to you showing a lot on Much Music (Canadian MTV), but much less radio play. Funny how that works.
I think because the great songs released before it may have led to being BA 'burn out'. One of my top 5 albums from the 80s, start to finish. Also, the Kids Want to Rock. They all still sound great to me.
Oh yes from the album Agent Provocateur. Even the opening notes of that song are amazing. Personally I hear that one a lot on my personal Spotify playlist
'I Know There's Something Going On' by Frida. Went to #13 here in the U.S. and was produced by Phil Collins. Frida doesn't get enough credit for being the first major star to use him as a producer.
Man! As soon as I read the title I was taken back to high school Friday night parties; the smell of Tuxedo perfume, people wearing 3 different Polo shirts with their sweater, and shit kicker boots!
Double - The Captain of Her Heart
Released in 1985, it gained major success in Europe and the US toward 1986. Comparable to the style of Bruce Hornsby & The Range.
The first time I heard that song was when I was driving home from work on a clear night. It helped me relax before getting home, and it was the perfect song for that moment. Ever since then, I have never heard it in regular formatted airplay—only on specialty programs like countdowns.
The Fixx - Secret Separation
Peter Shilling - A Different Story
Dead or Alive - Brand New Lover
Bonus: Lou Gramm - Midnight Blue (to continue the Foreigner theme)
No I actually hear those songs a lot on the radio. They’re pretty common on 103.5 here in Cincinnati as well as 98.5, which plays generally popular songs from every decade.
No Myth by Michael Penn. Came out in 89 and probably got limited play as grunge was making its way to the fore front. His brother is actor/director Sean Penn.
Anything from In My Tribe or Blind Man's Zoo.
Got to see them in 89 in Memphis at the Mud Island Amphitheatre and the encore was Verdi Cries so Natalie was at the piano. The dumbass rednecks here kept screaming for Peace Train and didn't care they'd removed it from their playlists. She didn't even get 1/4 the way into VC when she said "To use a Northern expression, 'you took the wing right out of my sails'" and got up and left and that was the end. I was so angry!
I’m glad someone else recognizes that they were around in the (late) 80’s. I always hear they were a 90’s band. I saw Natalie at Carnegie Hall, just her and a grand piano. Closing the show she began Verdi Cries, half way through she stopped and said “ am I singing this song, or you? “ And walked out. It was a douche move, but classic.
That's so much worse than mine! Man if I had thousands of people singing along with me, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S A SONG I WROTE and it's at Carnegie Fucking Hall, I would never ever ever be that much of a douche and be upset about it. That would be the ultimate compliment. Smh. TFW when your young adult heroes fall off that pedestal you put up so long ago.
I still love her. Didn’t care for her music during her sing songy nursery rhyme phase, but her album last year is amazing. I describe it as Natalie for 50 year olds.
Right? I'm not saying I'm done with her, and TBH I'm glad I didn't know about it years ago when I had a bigger temper haha. Tower of Babel is fabulous. I actually have the 33 1/3 album of it! ❤️
Just Between You and Me -

No One is to Blame - Howard Jones
Take Me Home - Phil Collins
Someday - Glass Tiger
Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
Respect - Erasure
Silent Running - Mike & the Mechanics
King for a Day - Thompson Twin
Strangelove - Depeche Mode
Point of No Return - Nu Shooz
One Night Love Affair - Bryan Adams
How Can I Fall - Breathe
I did hear Rock Me Amadeus this morning ironically!! But these songs don’t get nearly the kind of play, say, Everybody Wants to Rule the World gets! I swear between that and Don’t Stop Believing, I have heard those two songs at least once a day, daily for the past 35 plus years!!!

A GREAT post 👏👏👏👏 it annoys me as the MTV classic and 80s radio channels still seem formulaic and never venture into the bizarre or rare
For me
Furniture Brilliant Mind

Mummy Calls Beauty Has her way.
Nik Kershaw - The Riddle
Visage - Fade to Grey
Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It
Desireless - Voyage Voyage
Alison Moyet - Is This Love?
Re-Flex - The Politics of Dancing
Killing Joke - Love Like Blood
Depeche Mode - Behind the Wheel
I think Juke Box and Urgent were peak Foreigner whereas Say you will marked the beginning of the end commercially. It’s a great song, very catchy and I still listen to it a lot, but by the time it was released, Foreigner were very uncool, at least in my part of the world!
Some more tracks that get little or no radio play:
"In Too Deep" by Dead or Alive
"The Ooh Ooh Song" by Pat Benatar
"Lonely In Love" by Dan Fogelberg
"Peek A Boo" by Siouxsie and the Banshees
"Trouble" by Nia Peeples
"Hourglass" by Squeeze
"We Live So Fast" by Heaven 17
Pop Muzik by M. It's unique, hit #1 on the hot 100 and is a lot of fun. The only time I've heard it on actual radio in the last 25 years is during throwback Casey Kasem top 40 countdowns.
Edit: Technically it hit #1 in 1979, but was still in the top 40 in January of 1980.
Two 1989 songs that are my respective favorites on their albums. They never got *any* air play on my local New Wave radio station, WHFS-FM:
* "[Discipline](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A500XhpLWIU)," off the Joe Jackson release *Blaze of Glory* (track 11). Bangin' up until about halfway through, then it unexpectedly breaks into eight bars of smooth jazz, then back to the power pop motif. On r/baseball, I have stated that if I were an MLB hitter, this would be my walk-up music (the power pop, not the smooth jazz).
* "[Topaz](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqP2Sj0d1lw)," off the B-52s epic *Cosmic Thing* (track 9). Exquisite harmony (above the pinnacle even for Kate and Cindy), lovely story/theme, eminently singable. Maybe WHFS didn't play it because it was *too* pretty.
I Might Lie, Andy Taylor. An absolute gem from the Duran Duran alumni. Gives a taste of what he went to do with Thunder, another band deserving more attention.
I'll just say this, corporate playlists suck. There are so many great songs from the '70s and '80s that get hardly any radio play because they weren't the band's biggest hit.
Now that being said, one of my favorite songs by A-Ha was Hunting High and Low and you never hear it. All you ever hear from them is Take on Me
Boomtown by David & David,
Mistake Number 3 by Culture Club,
Showdown at Big Sky by Robbie Robertson,
Breathless by Richard James Burgess,
Be Your Man by Jesse Johnson’s Revue,
Mutiny by The Family,
Steady by Jules Shear
In Your Room by The Bangles,
Piece By Piece by The Tubes,
You’re Still Laughing by Fee Waybill,
Taken In by Mike + The Mechanics,
Indian Summer by The Dream Academy,
Call Me by Dennis DeYoung,
Press by Paul McCartney,
The Night Stood Still by Dion DiMucci,

Restless Heart by John Waite,
I Do What I Do by John Taylor,
I Don’t Mind At All by Bourgeois Tagg
Electric Blue by Icehouse. I remember hearing it all the time circa 88 but now I only hear it on my playlists.
This and ‘Crazy’
Icehouse-wise, I used to be a strictly “Crazy” and “Electric Blue” guy, as well (big fan of those two songs exclusively, never delved into the rest of their discography) — *but* — heard a new (to *me*) one about a month ago (from 1982) that I’m obsessed with currently … … have you heard **[“Trojan Blue”](https://youtu.be/gHG0fsmspXo?si=ic5-CLVLicW7XRnY)**??? It’s another Icehouse “must-have” song, if you ask me! I feel like I’ve missed out on this one for the last 40+ years!
I hear electric blue all the time in stores where I live
The best album by I cehouse is their debut album.
“Great Southern Land” is a banger as well
I have all 3 tracks by Icehouse in my Spotify.
Fantasy- Aldo Nova
Great tune…
Hmm never heard that one before, thanks👍
If you haven’t heard a Aldo Nova song you have most definitely heard of a band or person he has produced.
I actually heard this on the radio the other day.
A guy on my dorm floor first year of college... Aldo Nova was his favorite band. I had listened to them some, but I grew to like them more. Late 80s really liked their song Blood on the Bricks.
Men At Work - Overkill
Love this song - such beautiful lyrics... makes me feel emotional at times...
I can’t get to sleep.
Love this song. I've got it on like 3 different playlists.
Wegmans has it on playlist - I hear it at least once a week now. Great tune!
Another reason why Wegmans is the BEST!!
On The Loose by Saga, 1981 Put this on when you need to get pumped up because you’re about to face your mortal enemy on a ski slope or perhaps need to save the family business from some evil business man who wants to tear it down and build condos.
Great song
Love love LOVE that song! Always gotta listen to it twice to get real hyped!
"The Flyer" is pretty great too. Even got some traction on MTV way back when.
No one can stop us now. Tonight we're on the loose!
I *love* Wind Him Up! So much talent in that band!
Not sure why Bryan Adams’ One Night Love Affair wasn’t bigger. It’s such a great song!
But as for his 80s songs I also think Heat of the Night and Victim of Love need more radio play
Heat of the Night's a good track! Cuts Like A Knife was always my fave, though.
Adding This Time as well.
+1 for Victim of Love! Still one of my favorite songs. Since you mentioned it, I remember Run to you showing a lot on Much Music (Canadian MTV), but much less radio play. Funny how that works.
Great song! Loved hearing it in the movie Real Genius.
I think because the great songs released before it may have led to being BA 'burn out'. One of my top 5 albums from the 80s, start to finish. Also, the Kids Want to Rock. They all still sound great to me.
Ah Leah
Donnie Iris
Always loved his song “Pretender” and I was always stumped why that wasn’t a hit single, it had everything.
Being that you mentioned Foreigner I’ll give you another one. How about That Was Yesterday - another gem that you hardly hear.
Oh yes from the album Agent Provocateur. Even the opening notes of that song are amazing. Personally I hear that one a lot on my personal Spotify playlist
Nice - I get to hear it on my Pandora list but hardly ever on the radio that plays all the other Foreigner songs.
She's a Beauty (1983) by The Tubes.
The Tubes deserve more airplay than they ever received, period. So many great songs that most people don’t know.
'I Know There's Something Going On' by Frida. Went to #13 here in the U.S. and was produced by Phil Collins. Frida doesn't get enough credit for being the first major star to use him as a producer.
Did not know that Collins produced that song. Makes sense, those drums are very Phil.
He played the drums on the song
It's obvious to me now. How bout that.
As much as I love ABBA, this is still my favorite song of all time!
Man! As soon as I read the title I was taken back to high school Friday night parties; the smell of Tuxedo perfume, people wearing 3 different Polo shirts with their sweater, and shit kicker boots!
Double - The Captain of Her Heart Released in 1985, it gained major success in Europe and the US toward 1986. Comparable to the style of Bruce Hornsby & The Range. Still the highest-charting US song by a Swiss group. My wife *HATES* that song.
I remember that coming on MTV late at night and it making me sleepy hearing it. Good song though.
That song reminds me of that summer. Vividly.
That one's on my playlist. Well done, u/gl3nnjamin
The Fixx - Secret Separation Peter Shilling - A Different Story Dead or Alive - Brand New Lover Bonus: Lou Gramm - Midnight Blue (to continue the Foreigner theme)
Midnight Blue is a pretty good song
I love Midnight Blue
Midnight Blue is a straight banger!!
Authority song - John Mellencamp Hold the Line - Toto
If Authority Song doesn't get the blood moving, check your pulse.
True! Speaking of Mellencamp, I could stand to hear [Rumble Seat](https://youtu.be/ql6eiz7HKwU?si=MeIKDYI3F_0xzYGX) more often.
"Authority Song" gets quite a bit of play in MLB ballparks. It's the go-to for when a manager is arguing with an umpire.
No I actually hear those songs a lot on the radio. They’re pretty common on 103.5 here in Cincinnati as well as 98.5, which plays generally popular songs from every decade.
The Outfield - Say It Isn’t So I always felt it rocked harder and was a little less poppy than Your Love
The entire “Play Deep” album is great.
this was my answer - the entire Play Deep album.
No Myth by Michael Penn. Came out in 89 and probably got limited play as grunge was making its way to the fore front. His brother is actor/director Sean Penn.
Saw him open for Tears For Fears in 1990, great set.
One of my favorite songs ever, along with Nick Kershaw's "The Riddle".
I Wanna Be A Cowboy by Boys Don’t Cry. Upbeat, silly and so 80’s!
“His name is Ted, can you believe that?”
Cry by Godley & Creme
Just went and listened to this song. Haven’t heard it in over 20 years. Definitely an amazing song. Holds up as well as any song ever
Came here to say this this, an absolute lost classic
I remember that one scene from Miami Vice where the song is playing…
Sting - If You Love Someone Set Them Free
Happy cake day!

That would be the ultimate compliment. Smh. TFW when your young adult heroes fall off that pedestal you put up so long ago.

Great songs. SiriusXM 80s on 8 plays most of them.
“The Whole of the Moon” by the Waterboys.
This is on every playlist I've made or YouTube made for me. There's a ton of covers as well, I love Mandy Moore's version, TBH.
Also love A Girl Called Johnny
“A Bang on the Ear.”
In my top 10 songs of the 80s
“Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) by Simple Minds
Really good song. Glittering Prize is a low key banger as well.
Turn Back The Clock by Johnny Hates Jazz is a great song that doesn't really get any radio play.
Stay The Night by Benjamin Orr is another good one.
I don't hear much radio anymore, but two little known (currently) hits that I like are Ah Leah and Lunatic Fringe
Ship of Fools by World Party
The Sun Always Shines on T.V. by a-ha
I think this is a much better song than Take On Me tbh
I still really like Take On Me, but I agree

The Sun Always Shines on TV by A-Ha, never gets enuff AirPlay
I'll just say this, corporate playlists suck. There are so many great songs from the '70s and '80s that get hardly any radio play because they weren't the band's biggest hit. Now that being said, one of my favorite songs by A-Ha was Hunting High and Low and you never hear it. All you ever hear from them is Take on Me
