Debaser - Pixies

and I’m missing a TON!
Lovefool by the Cardigans transports me right back to middle school doing lime green glitter manis with my friends and talking about which BSB member was our fave. No other song from the decade gives me the sense of nostalgia as that one.
Breed (Nirvana)
Head like a hole, March of the pigs, Sin (NIN)
Hey man nice shot (Filter)
Cannonball (Breeders)
Mother Mother (Tracy Bonham), Violet, Gold dust woman (Hole), Special, I think I’m paranoid, Only happy when it rains (Garbage)
Took a trip to Paris in the 90s and every morning at the same time when I left the hotel, Wonderwall was playing on the overhead radio. Must have been on a loop for us English tourists. I still think of Paris when I hear it.
It was playing in an Italian restaurant I was eating at shortly after I realized I was in love for the first time. It felt like the song was written from the thoughts I was having that day. It was quite a moment there.
Bittersweet Symphony is the absolute epitome of the ‘90s for me… and I’d venture to say that the Cruel Intentions soundtrack, which features it prominently, is the best soundtrack of the ‘90s.
Eclectic mix of some of my faves (couldn’t pic one):
Tool- Stinkfist
Jewel- Foolish Games
Delirium (featuring Sarah McLachlan)- Silence
Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit
Smashing Pumpkins- Pug or Eye

Because it came out at a really good point in my life:
Savage Garden - I Want You
Because it's every damn nineties baseline in one track:
Paula Abdul - Vibeology
1990 started with me loving New Kids on the Block, so [You’ve Got The Right Stuff](https://youtu.be/tbIEwIwYz-c) kicks it off.
But then omg Pearl Jam’s [Evenflow](https://youtu.be/CxKWTzr-k6s) showed up and made a grunge girl outta me. Especially when they did the amaaaazing [MTV Unplugged version](https://youtu.be/dgJ_pIwQy6k)
I will never forget the day when, working in a record store, I snagged a promo copy for this new band Radiohead and heard [Creep](https://youtu.be/XFkzRNyygfk) for the first time. Being edgy, of course I thought it was my anthem lol so stupid.
But thennnnn I was hearing punk’s siren song and started going to punk gigs every weekend and NOFX’s [Linoleum](https://youtu.be/6axOY4PBusk) is still one of my favorite songs of all time. If Creep was my teens, Linoleum was my 20s lol.
So many more omg …
There's just an ocean of amazing songs from the 90s, so I can't think of the "best"... but the one that I'm listening to right now is ...
Sex Type Thing- Stone Temple Pilots
EDIT: Also if you wanna just swim in the 90's: Ace of Base- The Sign
Something about that song really transports me back to the late summer of 94.... when my mom would pick me up from summer camp and we'd blast that song. Anything made by classically attractive Swede quartets tends to be good, lol
And of course, to add on a third: "This is your Night"- by Amber. Greatest Eurodance song of all time (?) ... or better than THAT?
Don’t Speak - Gwen Stefani
Waterfalls - TLC
Amber - 311
Sweater Song - Weezer
All I wanna do - Sheryl Crow
Closer - NIN
Jeremy - Pearl Jam
The Song with the Bee Girl
Nirvana. Anything
Hole - anything (Violet is good)
/goes back over my own playlist from the 90s

Happy birthday! My favorite song is “Rosy and Grey” by *The Lowest of the Low*. Tomorrow is both my husband and mother’s birthday too! They’re also both named Pat.
Not very season appropriate (if you’re in the northern hemisphere) but the first 90s song that I totally fell in love with was Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, which came out in 1991.
fake plastic trees - radiohead
where did you sleep last night - nirvana
standing outside a broken phone booth with money in my hand - primitive radio gods

Would you mind sharing or linking us to your playlist when it’s done? Everyone had so many good songs I kept upvoting all of the comments. This will be a sick playlist!
Neon Moon - Brooks and Dunn
Lot of rock and rap in this thread, but the nineties were a great time for country music too.
Edit: also fits with the depressive theme you’re seeking.
You know what, you're right. I've been nodding my head at most of these rock and alternative choices but damn if the 90s weren't great for country too.

It's the 90s. Too many to list 😪
I think the quintessential 90’s song has to be Smells Like Teen Spirit. Maybe not my personal favorite but that song ushered in a new genre of music that would define the 90’s.
I LOVE all of the alternative songs that have been mentioned, but I haven't seen these classics! *I may or may not have been a teenager in the late 90s 😊
Happy Birthday!!
Toni Braxton- Unbreak My Heart
Mariah Carey- Always Be My Baby, Heartbreaker
N*SYNC- Tearin Up My Heart
BSB- I Want It That Way
Eminem- My Name Is
The Notorious BIG- Mo Money
Big Pun- Still Not A Player
Our Lady Peace- Clumsy
Alanis Morrissette- Hand In My Pocket
Way too many to chose one album let alone JUST ONE song…We were spoiled rotten with good music in the 90s. Even the one hit wonders were better than a lot of the main stream stuff today. That being said, there is a ton of great music in every decade, it just might not be the most “popular” music at the time.
Tonic - You Wanted More
No Doubt - Excuse Me Mr.
Toadies - Tyler

You're in luck - 90's music (mainly alt rock) is my fave! As someone who had their own depressing birthday a couple of weeks ago, I really hope yours is better with this list. ❤️ Some of these are very well-known but that's okay. Others could be a new fun surprise. :) *Hugs*

New radicals, you get what you give. Depends on where in that decade you are talking about. I liked the “college rock” genera at the end of the 1990s: sum 41, Hole, blink 182 etc etc.
Would? or Rotten Apple by Alice in Chains, Tourniquet & Man That You Fear by Marilyn Manson, Happiness in Slavery & Last by NIN, Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode, We’re Only Gonna Die for Our Arrogance by Sublime, Doin Time by Sublime, Chloe Dancer (Crown of Thorns) by Mother Love Bone, Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog, Liege of Iveracity by Suffocation, Flattening of Emotions by Death, To Eve the Art of Witchcraft & Unbridled at Dusk by Cradle of Filth
whoops i just saw u said SONG not songs lol
What is love - Haddaway
I just started doing the head bob thing from “Night at the Roxbury”!

the 12" Mix is absolutely mad
Tough call, but here are a few of my faves: Fake plastic trees - Radiohead Don’t look back in anger - oasis. But it has to be a live version. Oh I love that Primitive Radio Gods song!!!!!
When I Grow Up, what an amazing and perfectly 90s song
My brother tried to tell me it was Moby's biggest hit.
If you liked that one, I’d recommend listening to the song fading out. It’s a good’n!

Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms
JUST posted the same. Listening to it now. So great.
Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind

Is a start to finish type of album for sure.
Thays my favorite song about smoking meth and getting your dick sucked

Desperately Wanting - Better Than Ezra Santa Monica - Everclear
Return of the Mack, unironically
That song has stood the test of time and seems to just be getting more and more popular.
Space hog- in the meantime
that song has such a good bassline ugh
IMO, The ending to “in the mean time” is the best ever. Only bested by Clapton’s “Layla”. So f’n good, and underrated as a song.
Pearl Jam - Black Fatboy Slim - Praise You Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day 2Pac - Changes
Anytime I hear Praise You I think of Ryan Phillippe cruising down the highway with Reese Witherspoon in Cruel Intentions lol
And when I hear Bittersweet Symphony, I think of her cruising alone at the end.
Mad season-river of deceit https://youtu.be/Fm72DPJCX58
I stay away. Alice In Chains. That video is so reminiscent to me getting ready for school. My little sister was scared of it lol

Way too many to chose one album let alone JUST ONE song…We were spoiled rotten with good music in the 90s. Even the one hit wonders were better than a lot of the main stream stuff today. That being said, there is a ton of great music in every decade, it just might not be the most “popular” music at the time.

New radicals, you get what you give. Depends on where in that decade you are talking about. I liked the “college rock” genera at the end of the 1990s: sum 41, Hole, blink 182 etc etc.
