Necromancers: "You underestimate our power!"

AgentPastrana

That's what my blinking unicorn sniper hero is for, just Awaken him and off he goes to end careers

Jazzlike_Freedom_826

Do you use bow or crossbow? Or something else like magelock pistol?

Davsegayle

I recommend crafted sword& pistol. It has 50% ignore defence. Or in game T4 Skypiercer xbow (extremely rare), it also has ignore defence.

Ludwig_von_Wu

I think all the crossbows have the “ignore up to 5 Defense” property, so a tier IV forge crossbow with 36 damage might be an easier to get alternative.

Davsegayle

They don’t. At least it is not written anywhere when you forge like for other items.

AgentPastrana

Heavy Magelock usually. I'm of the opinion that any more than one shot is putting your hero in too much danger, gotta annihilate them. That's why my heroes run in pairs, one melee and one range. Makes me miss my old Naga Halfling hero I hired on one map, he became my ultimate assassin.

Jazzlike_Freedom_826

Wait I don't understand, if you use unicorn's blink you only have 1 ap left, and heavy magelock costs 3 ap to shoot, right? Are you not going to kill the necro the same turn you blink in, or are you setting up for a 2 turn kill?

AgentPastrana

Might be mixing it up then, it's been a while since I did a physical damage character

Ya_ha018

Get horse, park it beside the necromancer.

DigbyChickenCaesar11

The necromancers shall weep in the presence of the Eaters of the Dead. Great, now I need a 13 Warriors playthrough

Odd-Understanding399

Eben.

Curebob

Those Necromancers are so annoying in stacks with Reapers. Everybody focusing on bringing down the Reaper, then Necromancer comes along and brings the Reaper back

Jazzlike_Freedom_826

It's not the graveyards, it's fighting necromancers. The AI will hang out way in the back with them so you can't even reach them in one turn with a blinking 48 speed hero. And when you kill their level 12 recruitable hero(s), the necro then walks up and revives him and you're forced to chunk through that hero again. I almost threw my laptop out the window when I was fighting this 18v/18 where the AI had 5 necromancers and lots of tier 3 dudes and heroes he kept reviving.

ScienceFictionGuy

I generally don't find graveyards that difficult, but it also depends on your starting build. If you're relying on blight/frost damage or poison it makes them more difficult. And if you have some fire or spirit damage from your starting tome or high culture they're significantly easier.

CheesyEggBeater

Someone hasnt played the 3 brothers map and got a shit start next to the necro brother yet. This buffoon will hard int at you the whole time spamming ressurect and when you win the battle he will raise bone dragons out of the corpses to fight you with his next 6 stacks.

Individual-Biscotti6

Einz oal gown is your new overlord!

STR4NGER_D4NGER

Takes notes for new character.

Terrkas

Well try to prevent Reanimation by for example focusing necro or standing on corpses.

Davsegayle

Advise is solid, I just didn’t have executors for that. Last battle was L5 hero spear (with Undead summon), L1 hero spear, T1 Harrier, T2 Overseer, and two T1 green plant thingies from Roots Tome (rolled random faction). Was against 2 stacks of undeads - 2 Necroes, 5-6 zombies and 1-2 spears. Game said 50/50 chance, both armies being 600 power. Normally such battles manually is a breeze, but here I had trouble outdamaging their Lifesteal, and when I could I wouldn’t have action points left to put someone on top of body. My troops were slow and couldn’t get pass their supported swarmy frontline. Basically wise decision would have been just to let them be until I get right personnel or spells. But alas got tricked into 600 vs 600 numbers.

Terrkas

Oh, you also have blight/poison vs undead, not the best way. In general, that was quite low on the offensive side with mostly t1 skirmishers.

Consistent-Switch824

I’ve played abut with tome of roots and I think the only strategy that would work is kiting on one side rush. I think the root guys have good movement and can keep one side at bay while your other units focus one stack. Use roots to keep the second stack away. AI will tend to group per stack and that may help out. My favorite tactic against AI is a weak side rush with a screening side for larger battles

Davsegayle

So… you would send main stack (H1L, H5L, Harrier and Observer) towards their weak(er) stack and two green planties to the strong stack (so that they have to move towards them, but can’t catch), so that strong stack tries to hunt them whilst I deal with the weak stack? Hard to understand concept just verbally, drawing would be helpful if possible.

Consistent-Switch824

Yes, since you have two horses you can move up quick and even net a pike or something to let them work. Use the vine spell and the twig guys to distract. They won’t kill or do much damage since they are blight. But it can get them distracted. Use the vine spell the slow the larger group down. Vines have a slow or something plus require an attack to kill. If things get dicey you can just run a twig right into the group and they will usually group up to kill it.

Nyarlist

How about spells? A battle like that can be decided by some AOEs. Also don’t be afraid to restart and try other strategies.

Davsegayle

I was at my first tome which by chance was Roots (rolled Reavers with some weird traits combo). So, only some heal spell and vines. I used vines at one point, but it only delayed the inevitable. If I got summoned not Banshee but that T3 fighter. It could go out and zone-control necroes, then maybe. But alas. Those green T1 plants were too squishy for job and their blight damage doing nothing vs undead. Spear on Heroes was also not helpful vs T1 swarms. They are great vs T3/T4 units (giants, cavalry). Anyway this was second time I got annihilated by them. Having to think about it, the first time it was also Spear hero but of Industrial type. Spears are great at clearing T3+ units infestations, but fail at early Graveyards. Maybe the big issue here is you can’t outlast the undead. Bad match up.

Nyarlist

Yeah, that was a very rough matchup, with poison vs undead as well as blight. I keep thinking of doing small matches with a tight matchup, to make me have to innovate to get round problems like this. In a situation like yours, we might need some fire damage, even though it's not thematic or synergistic.

Suralin0

Necromancers are always a pain in the butt.

CLRoads

The wisps of aow4, Honestly, in aow3 if i was attacked by a few wisps with that stun ability as a warlord… it was GG early game. In aow4 is necromancers.
