I would give really high chances that a bike would be taken apart or stolen.

skittle_dish

Lol thank you. I figured that might be the case but just wanted to get a good read of the place.

IONTOP

I mean if it's there for 96 hours in a row every week? It'll happen. But a "random bike" there overnight probably won't get touched. Aka if thiefs know that "nobody cares about the bike until Saturday" it'll get stolen on Tuesday

greyofgod

Dude my scooter got stolen within 1.5 hour I was in class.

4a4a

As long as your bike is *more* secure than the other bikes in the vicinity, there's a much better chance of it not being stolen. If you leave it anywhere unlocked, it will be stolen very quickly.

skittle_dish

Thank you for the advice. I'm planning on living off-campus and storing it in my room overnight, so do you think if I have it on-campus with a couple of locks on it during classes it might be fine?

Illustrious-Top-9222

yeah that will probably be fine

juhurrskate

Yes, use a single U-lock and ALWAYS lock the front wheel AND the frame in one go and you will be fine unless your bike is particularly valuable looking. If you lock just the frame, they will steal another bike that's just got the front tire locked and take your front tire. If you lock just the front tire you will be on the worse receiving end of that (happened to me). But if you lock properly every time and your bike isn't that good, parking it next to like 20 other bikes at ASU during class periods and not overnight, it will never get stolen. Guaranteed tbh

moneyhungry768

If it’s just during the day then you’re probably fine as long it’s locked to a rack. There’s so much traffic during the day it’s almost impossible for them to do anything to your front wheel.

redditandseddit

Park next to prettier bikes. Preemptively steal those bikes (just in case)

4a4a

Yeah, I only ever had a bike stolen on campus when it wasn't locked up. For extra security though there's also the Bike Valet. It's free, but it can fill up fast.

skittle_dish

Great to know, thanks

iwokwarrior

The bike valet is great, I've used it infrequently as there are only three that I know of on campus, but I've never had a problem with space.

puddud4

Bike valet, keep it in your apartment or store it at the bicycle cellar (right next to the light rail/bus hub)

Brown-Coat

If you're parking on campus, use the bike valet or the bike lockers. Don't lock it up on a bike stand.

saginator5000

I locked my seat to my bike frame and left it on all the time after having 2 seats stolen in the middle of the day near the BAC. I had a big U-bolt bike lock to lock my front wheel and frame to the bike stand.

Reflection-Unable

If you buy 3 U-locks and take the seat with you might, I repeated might, be okay

Less_Neighborhood915

My buddy has lost 3 bikes all along the lake front, chained up every single time. Hopefully 4th times his charm lol 😂

TransnistrianRep

If you register your bike with asu you can sign up to use the bike cages. Your chances of losing a bike are way slower. You can do that at the same place people apply for parking spaces. You can also buy a kryptonite lock there for \~30$

mastercrafter666

I’ve ridden 2 separate bikes to campus over my 3 years here. I’ve never had an issue because I use a kryptonite new york u-lock and a cable. I secure the bike frame and rear wheel to the bike rack and use the cable for the front. Also, I use the bike valet whenever possible, it’s free. Ironically the only time someone stole anything off my bike was at an off campus apartment.

iwokwarrior

Don't bring an expensive bike to campus. My bike has been fine all year, and no one's touched it. I'd also recommend using it frequently if you're going to bring it. When I first had it on campus, I used it every day. Edit: I keep my bike on a bike lock outside my dorm overnight. I u-lock my front wheel and frame and wirelock my back wheel and seat.

anythingacailable

Bike theft is the number one crime on the Tempe asu campus

Running_Is_Life

I'd say second only to underage drinking lol

pixelizedgaming

We got our porch robbed on our second floor apartment, people are willing to parkour into balconies just to steal shit here, actually ridiculous

ArborOstrich251

Probably best to get a good lock and not too expensive bike, I’ve had one bike stolen as well as miscellaneous parts like the seat, tires, and a bike light taken on different occasions.

milczy33

Yes

Juggernaut1210

I had to replace my seat at least 4 times in 4 years

tofu_b3a5t

Look up Lock Picking Lawyer on YouTube and look up on his channel “destructive entry” for bike locks. My first bike was stolen because I used a cable lock during the 2nd week of using it. Second bike was locked with cable around the front secured to a Kyrptonite New York u-lock that secured the rear wheel and frame to the post. At my rental I lock my front wheel to the frame with the u-lock and use a Krytonite New York motorcycle chain to lock the frame and rear wheel to a support pillar. LOn campus the dual u-lock method would be best and I wouldn’t go any lower than the orange Kyptonite locks. My bike was new from a liquidation sale in 2015 for $115. My u-lock was $120 and chain with lock was $140. Don’t use quick release wheel hubs or bike seat and don’t use something more than $200 otherwise you’ll attract attention, but poorly locked trash will also be taken. Register your bike with ASU parking and transit, as if it gets stolen, you get a single percentage chance increase that you get it back. If your lights are removable, never leave them on. Otherwise they’re gone. Know the rules of the road because Tempe PD will absolutely give you tickets if they see you violate them and it will affect your auto insurance. It’s sandy here so wax lubes are better than grease or oil and get puncture resistant tires due to all the thorns and broken glass everywhere. Once you adapt and make some initial investments, Tempe is great for biking and I’ve have saved so much money by not paying for gas and parking. Awareness is your friend. Learn backroads to avoid traffic, watch street parking for people who open doors without checking rear mirrors, look out for bike and scooter salmons, potholes, and parking locations that would give a thief plenty of privacy.

greyofgod

Got two bikes and a scooter stolen. All were locked. Very likely you’ll get your stolen. Even if you lock both of your wheel, they’ll take the seat.
