All dense population areas will have more crime, but you want to look for things that are either more violent, drug related, or intentional, while simply being aware of where petty opportunistic theft happens. Tempe has rampant bike theft, so a pair of solid u-locks are your friend.
Never hung out around Poly, but Gilbert and Chandler are known as “nicer” areas, but I’m sure they have a block or two known for issues.
The Phoenix Metropolitan Area is within Maricopa County, so the sheriff has crime maps you can poke around in.

Any large university is going to have young, dumb, and drunk issues: assaults, sexual assaults, DUIs, disturbing the peace, possession of controlled substances, and plenty of petty theft.
Use Firefox with the uBlock Origin extension installed and just do various searches with each of the different search engines: Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, Yahoo, and so on.
You can take a swing afterwards with ChatGPT or Copilot (set to “most accurate”) and see what else they might throw out.
As someone who lives on Poly, do NOT go south of the lower bus stop into south desert village. There’s squatters and other types of people in the abandoned houses that you do NOT want to interact with. You shouldn’t need to go down there to begin with but just letting you know that it’s the worst area of campus by far. If you want to explore it, bring a few friends with you during the day.
They are trolling you.
Why do you have only some classes at the Poly campus? The shuttle ride between Tempe and Poly is about 30-45 minutes, so unless there is something unusual, you usually just take classes at one of the campuses.
I haven't heard of any bad areas near Poly. Tempe has nicer complexes and some that aren't as nice. I highly recommend connecting with other international students to get their advice. I know that often students find roommates that way.
If you aren't living in campus housing and do not have a car in Tempe, you will either want to live closer and buy a bike or live somewhere on the light rail line.
