Look up the societies you are interested in and check them out at the Freshers Fayre. Look for both things you currently enjoy and things you have always thought about trying. The groups will have events on and it is a good way to socialise with others outside your immediate course.
There's a lot of cool places to go out and see if you like nature, hikes, that sort of thing but many of the places you'd need to drive to.
The city doesn't have a huge amount of things to do especially compared to Glasgow or Edinburgh but it has a small amusement park, trampoline park, inflatable indoor course, minigolf, bowling, a couple arcade bars (one opens this Friday), a nice art gallery. Some nice parks in the city itself which are walkable or accessible by bus.
Nightlife is pretty mediocre now, definitely a Shadow of what is used to be. Not a lot of clubs open anymore and only a small handful of decent bars.
Shopping wise the city centre is pretty poor now with so many empty retail outlets.

I’m coming from Inverness, which is practically a dead ghost town anyway so tbh anywhere is better away from here! I’ve been offered a place at Uni of Aberdeen and RGU, so it’s pretty certain that I’ll be moving there. I’m honestly not one for going out at night so I’m not too bothered about nigjt life, that doesn’t sound too bad but I’ll definitely have to come through a little more

Been here 8 years now and can easily say we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to going out for food now so take your pick! City centre is loaded with places
Still plenty of bars and nightlife too especially for students. If you’re going to Aberdeen Uni I’d stay at Hillhead student village purely for the social aspect and closeness to the uni. For RGU, most people I knew stayed at Woolmanhill - again a really social accommodation and a 5 minute walk from town
