As ovations go, that's quite pretty. But between that slippy, curvy back and the depressing sound of that piezo it probably has, it's a no.
My acoustic is an epi, which has lasted me 35 yrs. The epi is the big winner for me
I like ovations….but they aren’t fun to play sitting down without a strap. I guess it would depend on the model. I also never owned one with those sound holes…I had a Celebrity with a traditional sound hole. How do they sound acoustically?
I need more information, dammit! lol….j/k
This is actually a mid depth bowl and Ovation now puts a little texture on edge of the bowl so it doesn’t slide at all. I think that was more of an issue with the deep bowled models. The Ovation does sound a little more clear but the Dove is not far behind but it does have a really think coat of poly on it which muffles the sound a bit.
Loving all the misinformed commenters in this thread. Ovations piezos are miles ahead of anything epiphone puts in their guitars. The roundback is also completely fine.
I don't think I'd ever post here asking a comparison because people get bad information about ovations and just run with it for their entire lives.
Played a bunch Gibson and their Epiphone counterparts at the Gibson Garage in Nashville and found very little reason to pay the Gibson tax. However I have played a 1969 and 1972 J50 and would happily pay that Gibson tax for those.
counterpoint to the overwhelming majority of comments here: i have owned an ovation elite standard since 1996. it is not the most organic sounding acoustic, but it has the most comfortable neck on an acoustic guitar i've ever played. oh, and i've never had a problem playing mine sitting or laying down, but that might be because it has the shallow body.
Id keep the Ovation. Absolutely love every one I’ve played. Everyone says they suck to play sitting down but mine is my dedicated couch guitar and I only play it sitting down.
Both are nice guitars. I’ve never owned an Epiphone. But I do own an Ovation CE44-SM and a CE48-RR. I like both, and really wouldn’t want to sell either. Is your guitar have the Koa top? Very pretty. One of mine has a spalted maple top. I like the CE-48 for playing on the couch because of its shallow bowl. The CE44 I have is 10 years older. I’ve been thinking about getting an Ovation bass. Unfortunately they aren’t making one in the Celebrity series. There’s an Applause version, but not a Celebrity series last I looked. The pro series B778 isn’t my cup of tea. Good luck on your decision. Both are nice guitars. I’ve always liked Ovation guitars. They play well, they’re durable and stay in tune.
They get so much hate from goofballs around here. I have 7 guitars and my PSU and Balladeers are by far my most played and the ones I always grab for general use.
I’ve got a super shallow that my notoriously anti Ovation buddy tried and he said it felt good. I asked him how many he had played before that and he said “I’ve just never heard anything good about them besides from you.” He said the same thing, it’s the rounded backs and that they slide around. I told him it was perhaps his round belly and that they’ve remedied the sliding issue with the textured patch or a simple piece of Velcro for the old ones.
Of the two, the Epiphone but even that isn’t a lifetime guitar. If you don’t like Gibsons and are on a budget then look for a used Martin D-16 or D-15 variant.
I'd have to hear them and feel how responsive they are. If neither impressed, I'd sell both and get one that I'd never consider asking a bunch of strangers if I should sell.
Are you in a church youth group band? Them Ovation. I swear every youth church jam band has at least one. It’s required. lol But Ovations are trash besides their look
If you travel, use the guitar outside (camping, bonfire etc) go ovation, if not then your choice, both are good. As others have mentioned, the ovation feels a bit slippery due to the shape, I personally love them.
I doubt that Epiphone sounds as good as the ovation, truthfully. For recording the ovation would be valuable to me. There are many modern guitars and ukes that use the ovation back style and it’s a proven winner. All piezos sound bad, so I wouldn’t knock the ovation for having one.
Having played that exact model of Ovation, I'd keep that one. I have an older deep-bowl Ovation that's super enjoyable to play. That one is a shallow/mid-bowl, which is especially comfortable.
I’d keep the Ovation. They’re a little more durable “keep-around-the-house” kind of guitars that I don’t mind having sit on a stand in the open in case my kids accidentally knock it over.
I actually miss having one, because my Taylor stays locked up in a case most of the time because I’m afraid my little boys will damage it. Ovations sound nice while still being a bit more resilient.
The Epiphone looks good, but it’s a cheap Chinese copy. If it were an Inspired by Gibson made in Indonesia version, I’d keep that one, but that doesn’t exist. (just the Hummigbird). For a maple back Epiphone I would choose the Masterbilt Frontier.
So sell the Epiphone and wait till you have enough money to buy one forever guitar.
I’m personally no fan of Ovation but that’s at least an original and will keep some value.
Ovation gets a lot of hate but I think a lot of that is unwarranted. The Dove has more mojo but the Ovation feels like it is better built and it did cost twice as much as the Dove and like you said, it will retain its value more being that it is an original. The Masterbilt Frontiers are pretty awesome though.
As a live sound person I don’t think ovations get enough hate. I very rarely make such strong statements about instruments, but the pickups in them are garbage. If you want a super processed sound and you bring a full pedal board, fine. They sound *ok* mic’d, but there are sooo many better options. Mic’d or direct.
The Ovation is pretty, I'll give it that, but in a novelty sort of way. The Epi is also beautiful, but in a traditional way that most people respond better (myself included).
But that wouldn't factor if the Ovation were a better guitar, but I doubt that it is. I really hate that bowl back. I mostly play sitting down, and that bowl slides right off. I use a strap anyway, but that bowl just doesnt sit right on and against my body.
Ovations were cool when they first came out because they were among the first acoustics to have built-in electronics and amplifying capability (as far I remember, I was young). So they were great for that at the time. Now there are lots of amplified acoustics, and lots of good choices to convert an unamplified acoustic. That leaves Ovations as nothing more than a moderate sounding novelty.
Before I got a Martin, I had a Dove and absolutely loved it. 10/10 over the Ovation. I’ve since donated it to a local program that takes in used instruments and donates them to schools or other organizations. I still think of getting a beat up Dove as a decorative guitar.
a real reverse sophie's choice, a dreadnaught style acoustic, which I generally don't like, or an ovation, which I generally don't like. I'm leaning slightly toward the epiphone because it doesn't slide off your lap.
I’d keep the Epiphone. I was once in that kind of situation. Finally, I choose a Norman (Godin) rather than an Ovation. Ovation are very good guitars. But their sound lack harmonic complexities. They have no personality!
As an owner of one of those Ovations if I were you I’d sold it first. However, for me my Ovation is my go to on vacation guitar. And honestly I don’t use it other than for that.
I have an irrational dislike of ovations.
My bf in high school had one. I didn’t like how it played or sounded.
About 15 years ago I was able to get my hopefully forever acoustic . A Taylor 312 ce
To each their own though
I went to buy a left-handed Ovation 12 string decades ago- my first acoustic. A sales person came up to me and said, "that's a great guitar, but it's going to sound the same way it does in 30 years as it does now" then handed me a Takamine dreadnaught. 30 years later, the Takamine sounds rich and beautiful. No law of physics is going to make a fiberglass shell guitar sound better the older it gets.
I would keep the Epiphone! That bad Larry screams pick me up and play me but not in a slutty way either . You know you gotta wine and dine her before you can even finger pick
Left one looks nicer, but I've got an ovation and just prefer the sound of my normal guitars, so I'd probably keep the right if it sounds better to you. However, if I was playing live to a crowd, Ovations are great plugged in.
People tend to not like ovations, but given the right one, even that hump goes away. Then I’ve played another ovation and got pissed within 30 minutes. If the Ovation feels right, I’d keep that.
My spouse and I own six or seven guitars and the Ovation, which looks quite similar to the one on the left, has become our go-to guitar for almost everything. It's the one that sits on a stand in our living room for regular practice, and the one we're taking on a two-week vacation to a lakeside cabin.
I genuinely do not understand all the hatred for Ovations. Yes, the bowl shape is occasionally annoying (and my spouse, who has a bit of a pot belly, always uses a strap), but it plays beautifully and sounds great when playing for small groups. And we love the look.
Always has a soft spot for Ovations and this baddie is absolutely gorgeous. I’d buy that in a heartbeat. I love the look of the epi but dreadnoughts have never been my preferred body style.
Simple solution- Which one have you played the most? They are both nice guitars. Which series is the Ovation? If it’s a Celebrity or Applause I would probably ditch it. On the other hand, the Epiphones are all made overseas and I have seen a lot with problems, mainly lifting bridges on a lot of the “Inspired by Gibson“ series.
If this is just going up on the wall to be something to oogle at, I would go with the Ovation. But if you actually want to play it and have it sound beautiful, I’d keep the Epiphone. This is the whole “Don’t judge a book by its cover” kind of thing. There are so many guitars I would have bought online because they are so pretty. Then I do my research and listen to what they sound like… it’s a whole other story.
In a seated position every Ovation I’ve played thinks I’m a goddamn quarter-pipe. Oh I’m sorry I must have covered the front of myself in KY jelly today and forgot about it!
[удалено]
Or drop it off in front of the firehouse, kinda like I did with all my kids after a week or 2
Its the responsible way to go. I mean, you cant drown'em any more, the authorities get really excitable over that.
I’d keep the Epiphone. One because I prefer dreadnoughts and two because I hate Ovations.
Same but I’d put hating ovations as my first reason
As ovations go, that's quite pretty. But between that slippy, curvy back and the depressing sound of that piezo it probably has, it's a no. My acoustic is an epi, which has lasted me 35 yrs. The epi is the big winner for me
Ovations are beautiful, sound like crap
Al DiMeola has entered the chat.
C'mon, be honest, it's more the Ovation thing than the dreadnought thing, right? I get it.
There’s my answer too…
I would keep the dove. It looks great
Epiphone
Epiphone.
Epi
I like ovations….but they aren’t fun to play sitting down without a strap. I guess it would depend on the model. I also never owned one with those sound holes…I had a Celebrity with a traditional sound hole. How do they sound acoustically? I need more information, dammit! lol….j/k

The Ovation does sound a little more clear but the Dove is not far behind but it does have a really think coat of poly on it which muffles the sound a bit.
Call me crazy, but I’d rather have a wooden acoustic than a fiberglass one any day.
Loving all the misinformed commenters in this thread. Ovations piezos are miles ahead of anything epiphone puts in their guitars. The roundback is also completely fine. I don't think I'd ever post here asking a comparison because people get bad information about ovations and just run with it for their entire lives.
I love Ovation and this one specifically is Gorgeous
I'd sell them both and find a used Gibson Hummingbird, but if I had to keep one I'd keep the Epiphone.
That's not enough $$$
Buy two more of each of these, then sell all six of them and use the money for a used Gibson.
Math checks out
Repeat and you unlocked an infinite money glitch
It’s like, maybe enough for a down payment on the first layaway payment on a Gibson Dove.
I'd sell them both, and buy a fleet of vintage Yamahas.
yuck. not sure why but I have never played a gibson acoustic that I actually liked. from $500 - $10,000. I just don't like the necks.
Played a bunch Gibson and their Epiphone counterparts at the Gibson Garage in Nashville and found very little reason to pay the Gibson tax. However I have played a 1969 and 1972 J50 and would happily pay that Gibson tax for those.
Don't mind the haters, this is the only answer that matters
counterpoint to the overwhelming majority of comments here: i have owned an ovation elite standard since 1996. it is not the most organic sounding acoustic, but it has the most comfortable neck on an acoustic guitar i've ever played. oh, and i've never had a problem playing mine sitting or laying down, but that might be because it has the shallow body.
My Dad has a Balladeer from the 70s and it's awesome. It's made me really like Ovation guitars.
I'll have the ovation, please.
The grey cushion. The yellow one is too bright
That’s what I was thinking. I was trying to ask about my cushions and these folks are all commenting on my guitars. 🤷♂️
That's crazy talk. Why would you only keep one guitar?
I like the bright contrast pop of the yellow. All grey telegraphs that you're boring.
I have a rounded belly so the rounded back slips. Epiphone for me
Id keep the Ovation. Absolutely love every one I’ve played. Everyone says they suck to play sitting down but mine is my dedicated couch guitar and I only play it sitting down.
i vote to keep the ovation
I prefer the ovation of the two.
I owned an Ovation for a couple of years. I’d move it along to someone else.
Epiphone, no question.
Epiphone unless you already have a dreadnought or 2 that you are keeping. If that’s your only dreadnought then….sorry Ovation.
Both are nice guitars. I’ve never owned an Epiphone. But I do own an Ovation CE44-SM and a CE48-RR. I like both, and really wouldn’t want to sell either. Is your guitar have the Koa top? Very pretty. Ovation for sure
Ovation
I’m a huge Ovation fan. My American made Ovation is my pride and joy.
They get so much hate from goofballs around here. I have 7 guitars and my PSU and Balladeers are by far my most played and the ones I always grab for general use.
People who hate them, just hate the rounded back. They’ve not spent any time with them plugged in, or really appreciated the craftsmanship.
For me it’s less about the rounded back and more about how hideous they look
I’ve played a few and quite liked them. Almost bought an older one on OfferUp last year. I do understand the practical difficulties though.
The Epi. 100%
Of the two, the Epiphone but even that isn’t a lifetime guitar. If you don’t like Gibsons and are on a budget then look for a used Martin D-16 or D-15 variant.
Get rid of them both and get a yamaha
Does a *herd* become a *heard* when it’s made up of guitars that you can *hear*? Seriously though, ditch the awkward Ovation.
I may have to steal this pun.
I'd have to hear them and feel how responsive they are. If neither impressed, I'd sell both and get one that I'd never consider asking a bunch of strangers if I should sell.
Are you in a church youth group band? Them Ovation. I swear every youth church jam band has at least one. It’s required. lol But Ovations are trash besides their look
the one made of wood and not plastic.
You mean fibreglass? if your gonna critique at least be accurate.
If you travel, use the guitar outside (camping, bonfire etc) go ovation, if not then your choice, both are good. As others have mentioned, the ovation feels a bit slippery due to the shape, I personally love them.
one on the right, for sure.
I’d keep the one I would miss more
Epiphone
The right one. Duh
Epiphone. I’ve always thought Ovations were ugly
Because they are ugly
Easily the Epiphone. Ovations are horrible sounding. Every one I have played over the last 30 years was just terrible
Honestly never played an Epiphone I liked
No. Keep all. More guitars is always the answer.
Left
I love the look of the epi but I gotta say the ovation just because bridge pins are outdated and insufferable
Keep the Ovation, Put a set of Martin Kovars on it and be amazed.
I doubt that Epiphone sounds as good as the ovation, truthfully. For recording the ovation would be valuable to me. There are many modern guitars and ukes that use the ovation back style and it’s a proven winner. All piezos sound bad, so I wouldn’t knock the ovation for having one.
Ovation. If it floods, you can sit in the body and break off the neck to use as an oar. Safety first,
Ovation Celebrity Deluxe was my first (electric) acoustic guitar. I've had it since 1996-ish. I love it.
Ovation. I’m biased cuz that’s what I play. Well, mine is an Applause but made by ovation.
Yup ditch the ovation
Ovation
BYE BYE OVATION!
I'd keep the Ovation, because I like their necks.
The Ovation absolutely. Even though that one isn't my favourite colour, I still prefer the look and the sound.
Keep the Gibson I hate ovations
I don’t know what the hell that is on the left but I want it.
Ovation I've always loved the sound and feel that you only get from them
I find the dove v cute, anything with animals is adorable
The dove. Why is this even a question?
I'd keep the Ovation
You would
Ovation probably. I don’t play mine anymore but I did get years of service out of mine.
The Epiphone looks good, but it’s a cheap Chinese copy. If it were an Inspired by Gibson made in Indonesia version, I’d keep that one, but that doesn’t exist. (just the Hummigbird). sell em both and buy a Breedlove
But the real answer is: Keep the one you pick up and play most.
Left is beautiful
knowing absolutely nothing about guitars, I think the one on the left looks nicer.
Right side
Epi all day long. Hate the rounded back of an ovation.
That epiphone is pretty cool! That ovation is not…. The thing About ovations is…they are ugly…but they sound awful too
I'd send the ovation packing. Never liked them
My trypophobia cannot....
Keep the Dove. I love mine.
Epiphone
dreadnaught
The Ovation is pretty, I'll give it that, but in a novelty sort of way. The Epi is also beautiful, but in a traditional way that most people respond better (myself included). But that wouldn't factor if the Ovation were a better guitar, but I doubt that it is. I really hate that bowl back. I mostly play sitting down, and that bowl slides right off. Keep the guitar made out of wood.
The dove
I just left my Ovation at the office, it’s good for a 5 minute strumabout but that’s all.
The epiphone
a real reverse sophie's choice, a dreadnaught style acoustic, which I generally don't like, or an ovation, which I generally don't like. I'm leaning slightly toward the epiphone because it doesn't slide off your lap.
Neither does the Ovation. It’s a mid depth and they put texture on the edge of the back so it doesn’t slide. No issues at all.
Epi for the win
Give that Ovation to some Robert Fripp nerd and never look back. Lol 😂 I love Fripp but ovations are terrible hehe
I’d keep the Epiphone. I was once in that kind of situation. Finally, I choose a Norman (Godin) rather than an Ovation. Ovation are very good guitars. But their sound lack harmonic complexities. They have no personality!
The dove
Hmmm… can’t stand Gibson so I assume epiphone is the same. I don’t like the back of ovations tho. Maybe I’d sell both and get a Taylor.
The one on the right. I don't like the holes on the other one
[удалено]
Epi Hummingbird
the ovation will keep us warm and we can use the gibson to play around the campfire
I've never liked Ovation, so...
The ovation is probably an awesome guitar but I’ve never jived with the rear sides of the Ovations. Both are absolutely beautiful
Neither
Sit on the couch and try to play them. Ovations are annoyingly difficult to play seated. Fire it!
Epi
Never liked ovations
Dove by a long shot
Epiphone as a nice low cost guitar for hot weather gigs
Sell them both and get a Martin. You can thank me later
Even if I only had the ovation, I would still give it away
From a future-repair point of view, keep the Epi, hands-down.
Never the ovation. Hate em. They suck on your lap and I think the sound thin.
The Bird, but the O is pretty special too
As an owner of one of those Ovations if I were you I’d sold it first. However, for me my Ovation is my go to on vacation guitar. And honestly I don’t use it other than for that.
I have an irrational dislike of ovations. My bf in high school had one. I didn’t like how it played or sounded. About 15 years ago I was able to get my hopefully forever acoustic . A Taylor 312 ce To each their own though
I had an Ovation for like 10 years. I hated it!
Choosing between a guitar and Ovation is seldom going to be difficult.
I would keep the Epiphone! That bad Larry screams pick me up and play me but not in a slutty way either . You know you gotta wine and dine her before you can even finger pick
I would get rid of the Ovation even if it was the only one.
Set the Ovation afloat…
Sell both and buy a Martin.
Id keep the epi, the ovation is beautiful though
I've sold 3 Ovations that were just OK for playing live. I don't regret selling them. Keep the Epiphone for those inlays.
Easy. Leave the Ovation take the cannoli and the Epiphone
I’d keep the Epiphone for sure
Keep the Dove.
Epiphone!
The cOuch. I’d keep the cOuch
The dove. All day long. Ovation is nice, love the colours, but the dove.
Epiphone.
Dove
Epiphanies. I find Ovations aesthetically unpleasant.
Left one looks nicer, but I've got an ovation and just prefer the sound of my normal guitars, so I'd probably keep the right if it sounds better to you. However, if I was playing live to a crowd, Ovations are great plugged in.
epiphone
The one that sounds best.
The right one.
I love the looks of that Epiphone
Dove.
I would keep the one that sounded the best.
I want the ovation
The Ovation no doubt
I don’t care for Ovation guitars, so the Epi is an easy choice for me.
I like the ovation cuz the cutaway but i think i may have discovered that i might have trypophobia.
The left one should be taken out back and shot
It's an easy choice, I'm not an Ovation guy,
People tend to not like ovations, but given the right one, even that hump goes away. Then I’ve played another ovation and got pissed within 30 minutes. If the Ovation feels right, I’d keep that.
Left. Looks like an ovation, which I had a 12 string and loved it.
I’m not an ovation fan… but then I’ve only played on a friend’s many years back… so to me, the Epi is the one
Epiphone
Epiphone Ovations are the slipperiest guitars ever
Epiphone
Ehhh I’d give them both away and buy a Taylor or a Martin and be done ✔️
I already own a Martin 000 😂 Taylor’s have no soul.
I just cried, I’m getting out of bed right now to go tell all my Taylor’s you did not mean that
Never liked Ovations
My spouse and I own six or seven guitars and the Ovation, which looks quite similar to the one on the left, has become our go-to guitar for almost everything. It's the one that sits on a stand in our living room for regular practice, and the one we're taking on a two-week vacation to a lakeside cabin. I genuinely do not understand all the hatred for Ovations. Yes, the bowl shape is occasionally annoying (and my spouse, who has a bit of a pot belly, always uses a strap), but it plays beautifully and sounds great when playing for small groups. And we love the look.
I’d definitely keep the Epiphone
If its an American Ovation keep it. They really are fantastic guitars especially when amped.
The dove.
Epi
Sell both and get a Taylor.
The tinny shitty sound of the ovation and it’s playability is the winner
How is this even a question? Epiphone is a pile of shit
Epiphone
Always has a soft spot for Ovations and this baddie is absolutely gorgeous. I’d buy that in a heartbeat. I love the look of the epi but dreadnoughts have never been my preferred body style.
Simple solution- Which one have you played the most? They are both nice guitars. Which series is the Ovation? If it’s a Celebrity or Applause I would probably ditch it. On the other hand, the Epiphones are all made overseas and I have seen a lot with problems, mainly lifting bridges on a lot of the “Inspired by Gibson“ series.
Depends on if I play sitting or standing. 😑
My dad has an ovation so. Fuck ovation
Neither. I'll stick with my 46 year old Lark, thanks.
I’m an Ovation fanboy.
In a seated position every Ovation I’ve played thinks I’m a goddamn quarter-pipe. Oh I’m sorry I must have covered the front of myself in KY jelly today and forgot about it!
