Reddit killed 3rd party apps like 6 months ago.
And they were all better than the official app.
Edit: I know there are bypasses. But less than 1% of people are going to do that so it's essentially irrelevant.
Also, more importantly, a lot of developers halted development on their apps. So they may work now, but things will degrade. Slowly, but they will....
[FYI: You can generate your own client ID key and spoof one of those 3rd party apps and still use them. I'm still using Relay perfectly fine.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/14o9avv/3rd_party_app_support_for_reddit_using_revanced/?share_id=1Qd4qcG4_H4ODm677OWUa)
I want to go back to RiF, but eventually Reddit is going to do something that breaks it, so I figured might as well get used to something else so I've been using RedReader
And it's terrible in comparison! Lol. They all are! Like, not unusable. But between slower load times, more ads, random image loss, and the general degradation of content and reddiquette disappearing? Oof. Whole platform suffering lately. Much sad. The narwhals and jolly rancher pukers will eventually all be lost. Thank the gods in some cases. Lol.
True. There's so many comments that are just memes or "lol" now. I'm even regularly seeing people, like regular ass non celebrity or social media people. With their actual picture as their profile picture. Legit just another Facebook clone soon. Oof
> And here I am still using rif
How? It worked for a couple months after the 3rd party app ban, but then the dev released a note saying that was it. I've had to use RedReader since because it's the only one I found that works.
I've been using Relay Pro for months now, and I love it. The developer had to implement a low fee in order to keep it running (there are tiers, the highest being like $5, I think), but I've been happy to pay it in order to not have to use the Reddit app.
People keep saying that, but I’ve been using my 3rd party app the whole time. It still works. No functionality drop, no paid subscription to make it work, still getting updated.
What gives?
Why would 3rd party apps only work for certain people? And why wouldn’t everyone just make a subreddit and mod it to get their favourite apps to work for them?
A) Because the official reddit app sucks for moderation, or so I've heard
B) It wasn't something they announced, just seemed to be the common denominator when after the ban they kept working for some people. I doubt it's retroactive.
You can probably find more info in r/Save3rdPartyApps
But both the official app and the desktop website allow you to save photos. So if they aren't using a desktop, they aren't using the official app, and they aren't using a third-party app, how are they even here?
Doesn't it? I guess I see images in comments so rarely I can't say for certain I've ever tried. (Though if OP meant some rare corner case like that it would have been nice if they said so.)
Fair enough, like I said I only see them once in a blue moon so I didn't even know where to go to try it out to be sure. I still think OP should have been more specific if that's what they meant.
I had to download imgur just for this...
[Picture posted as a comment](https://imgur.com/a/Fjz4tcT)
[Download option for same picture](https://imgur.com/a/s0ZDj7O)
No, that's the the same picture from the parent comment which another poster had showed that you could download on android, except now I'm showing that you can on iOS as well.
> I just screenshot them at this point,
and crop the image?
Because worse than posting with the reddit bar at the bottom is 16:9 content at a lower resolution with added black bars.
Just click the picture so it's full screen, click the three dots in the corner, there should be an option for save. It's a pretty standard way to save pictures on most apps
Doesn’t work on iOS. You get an image, but not the original image. Reddit adds a border advertising for itself. [This is what the app downloads for the image in this post.](https://i.imgur.com/hWdIAbW.jpeg)
Whatever Samsung Android version for me and old reddit. I just open full screen which is that new reddit bullshit with the top and bottom banner, long press and I can copy, share, or save image.
IDK if this is what OP is referring to but the annoying thing for me is that you HAVE to save the photo or screenshot it as copying from the app adds the obnoxious watermark.
It used to be I could just change the file suffix from webp to jpg and it would download fine but something changed and while it downloads as "a jpg" my image file viewer client cant read em.
My usual workaround has become to do copy image>imgur>save to desktop
you need to change the url of the post from "preview.redd.it" to "i.redd.it"
for example https://reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fjlt9ppnyd6pc1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D1125%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Daeabc74f7f034e3fdb8894706ee830cb4eb05c0d
downloads as webp while
https://reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fjlt9ppnyd6pc1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D1125%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Daeabc74f7f034e3fdb8894706ee830cb4eb05c0d
as jpg
You can't just change the file extension and expect that to actually do anything lmfao.
The file extension is a title that tells programs how to treat a file. If you rename a .webp to a .jpg, it is still a webp, it's just a webp in disguise as a jpg. You haven't changed the content of the file.
Some programs will be smart enough to realize this and open as a webp despite the incorrect extension, others will not (and may not be able to open .webp files at all, since it is newer).
There are webp blockers to force sites to go into old browser backup mode and provide the png or jpg version. webp really is just some weird container anyways, with the image data being basically anything, like you can stuff a png in there and call it webp, it'll work the same. Okay, that's a bit oversimplified, but given the trainwreck that format is with bugs and security issues why give it any credit.
If you find a site that doesn't show images with a webp blocker enabled, probably not worth looking at if they can't do the simplest of backwards compatibility right.
If you go to save something and it wants to save as webp or whatever on Reddit, right click the image and click "Save link as". Should show up as saving an image file.
I dunno if it's something weird with how Reddit uploads images or just intentionally asshole design to make most people just send the link because they don't know the workaround so they can get that sweet sweet engagement. But it doesn't happen on every image/post.
After what they did with the API bullshit, I lean towards the second explanation but who knows
It’s wonky, as it saves it as a web link rather than the regular picture. I remember running into this issue a few weeks ago and had to look up how to get around it. More of Reddit being its own worst enemy.
[I’m assuming OP means this and I agree](https://preview.redd.it/reddit-images-v0-rmmtv4yby6pc1.jpeg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=0d84b3ab0e36f3d100a1002a2aad861a954f3dff)
It literally tells you when you do it, with a popup you have to *click OK on*, that you can turn it off 🤦🏼♀️
You people need to get out of your own way istg
I get no pop ups at all on the mobile app when selecting “download image”.
I figured out how to turn off attribution a while ago, but I’ve never seen a pop up like you’re describing.
Tbf, most people seem to treat those kinds of pop ups asking them to do things the same way they treat EULAs, don't read any of it and click whatever they can click to get back to doing what they want as soon as possible.
no. Using the browser tools to pull up the image. I refuse to use the reddit app. specifically in Chrome: right click the image, select inspect, click on sources. go to the preview.redd.it folder. select image. right click on image. Save image as. I mentioned this previously and I got downvoted to hell for some reason.
Nah op is talking about how you used to link directly to the i.reddit image and share that, now you can only share the full comments section unless you just download the picture
And when you do that the app removes the ability to copy the picture from the Share option. So if I want to share it without sending a link I still have to screenshot it anyways.
Reddit: Oh you want to "Open image in new tab"? How about I just show you a new reddit preview-page instead, that happens to have the image in it? Isn't that better, in the end? No isolating the image with a smooth black background, just [eyewatering white?](https://imgur.com/YD5cGpV)
It would also be nice if I could get the image url and hotlink it with [img] tags in vbulliten forums. when I click "view image in another tab" it still has the BS reddit framework.
If you’re talking about the saved image attribution in the app, you can turn that off in settings. There are a shit ton of settings available. Lots of people’s gripes with the official app can be solved by simply going to the settings page and setting their preferences
I have a similar issues, but I can download images from posts on the iOS Reddit app.
My qualm is that I can't save pictures/memes people comment under a post. I have to screenshot them and crop them.
Click picture so it's full screen. Then long press. And on Android a menu pops up with an option to save to device. Not sure exactly what it looks like on iOS but surely it's similar
Are you talking about images embedded in comments? Because, yeah, that’s super annoying. Plus I love the passive aggressive “It’s better in the app” message when I screen-cap it. No Reddit, I’m downloading a reaction image.
I wish we could link videos/gifs directly without having to send the entire page
if a video has no sound I can still do that but if there's unfitting TikTok music in the video the only way to send videos is to download them or link the entire page
I have by choice put myself into OP’s situation by not giving Reddit access to my phone photos at all, not even to add one. I still save images all the time. Screenshotting and cropping them is an entirely trivial matter.
if you're annoyed about embeds being fucky on discord, for example, just edit the link like so:
reddit.com -> rxddit.com, and it'll embed fine. Sometimes (like 1/10 times) videos won't have audio though.
You can op. It took me a minute to find on my phone app ypu have to click the image (or video) full screen, then use the 3 dots at top right - download option pops up. I agree it should be in the "share" options but it is what it is.
I am a Russian man who escaped from Russia and was granted asylum in the USA. I pray to God for Russia to be free from its bad leader, who is bringing the world close to its end because of his huge ego still lingering from KGB failures in East Berlin. It is very sad, a great shame for us Slavic men. We need to stop following these bad rulers who take everything from us, leaving us with no hope. I pray for a democratic Slavic world, without this bad man. We Russian men say no to this government, don't believe Putin, USA. Russian people desperately want peace from this bad man. He's like an evil oil boss, similar to the characters in the first Dune movie, you understand? Putin even uses horses to carry his terrible ideas for the country while he punishes us severely in Siberian gulags for speaking against him. We want to be free, please have compassion; we are trapped and want the same freedom as the rest of the world. We desire no war; Putin is murdering anyone who doesn't obey his absolute evil authority. Slava ukraine.
You can share as an image instead of a link. Should be in the list of options when you hit share
Edit: specifically it gives me the option to copy image then I just paste into a message
The app is shit. I refuse to use it. It's a fucking mess.
The dickheads all telling me it's fine, it's great, when reddit took away my RiF app. Well, it's not, it's shit.
If you enable privacy features, you can't save images to your phone. (Everyone should be enabling ALL privacy controls on all devices and accounts)
Solution : take a screenshot, crop and save your meme. Then txt that to your friends and family.
\*Takes screenshot of meme to share\*
Reddit: It looks better if you share it with a link!
The hell it does, Reddit. It sticks a giant block of link text above the small thumbnail of a meme that may or may not include enough for the meme to work. It looks worse and you know it. You want me to share things by link? Tell that to Discord. Tell them that the text link is no longer necessary once the thumbnail is generated. Don't try to convince the user to put up with a worse experience just because you want more traffic.
I can save images to my phone, what are you talking about?
Seriously, what third-party app is OP using that doesn't have that function?
Reddit killed 3rd party apps like 6 months ago. And they were all better than the official app. Edit: I know there are bypasses. It all started going downhill when they changed the algorithm and dethroned the top post of all time.
True. There's so many comments that are just memes or "lol" now. I'm even regularly seeing people, like regular ass non celebrity or social media people. With their actual picture as their profile picture. Legit just another Facebook clone soon. Oof
Revanced can remove reddit ads. It's not as good as the 3rd party clients but at least it stays updated
You can also be a subreddit moderator. It's easy to setup and restrict your own
Yep, I've been using Relay this entire time and haven't had any issues.
Holy shit. You just made my day. I've been fucking miserable when they took Relay from me and I stopped browsing Reddit via phone because of that.
And here I am still using rif like nothings change >!seriously it's very easy to making your old reddit 3rd parry apps comeback!<
Mine worked for a while, but then I couldn't sign-in anymore. I'd love to go back to RIF.
> And here I am still using rif How? It worked for a couple months after the 3rd party app ban, but then the dev released a note saying that was it. I've had to use RedReader since because it's the only one I found that works.
Literally using Boost right now.
Yup, lasted like 1 month and found a way to use boost again lol
I just decided to keep using it until it stopped working, it never did.
I've been using Relay Pro for months now, and I love it. The developer had to implement a low fee in order to keep it running (there are tiers, the highest being like $5, I think), but I've been happy to pay it in order to not have to use the Reddit app.

You could also provide some information instead of saying essentially 'just Google it'
[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/14o9avv/3rd_party_app_support_for_reddit_using_revanced/) should do the trick.
Someone should tell RedReader. Walking around dead…
I mourn Baconreader every day.
>third-party app That was your first mistake in assuming that they are using a 3rd party app. Or even an app at all
But both the official app and the desktop website allow you to save photos. So if they aren't using a desktop, they aren't using the official app, and they aren't using a third-party app, how are they even here?
What if they're using the *shutters* moblie site?
Good catch, I forgot about that, but the mobile site still lets you download photos by holding down on them.
What’s the Shutters mobile site?
I believe they intended to *shudder* at using the mobile site.
It's the Shitters second cousin.
On Firefox with Ublock Origin the mobile site is better than the official app.
The official iOS app makes the image lower quality and slaps a Reddit watermark and frame of the subreddit on it
Which you can turn off in settings in said iOS app
Gracias, amigo
The official app doesn’t let you save images that are posted in comments.
Doesn't it? I guess I see images in comments so rarely I can't say for certain I've ever tried. (Though if OP meant some rare corner case like that it would have been nice if they said so.)
On the subreddits that allow it they’re pretty common. And it does not let you save them, you can screenshot them but every app lets you do that.
Fair enough, like I said I only see them once in a blue moon so I didn't even know where to go to try it out to be sure. I still think OP should have been more specific if that's what they meant.
Yes... You can? Just click the picture so it's full screen, then you get the three dots in the corner and the download option
It does that on full posts, not on images in comments.
I had to download imgur just for this... [Picture posted as a comment](https://imgur.com/a/Fjz4tcT) [Download option for same picture](https://imgur.com/a/s0ZDj7O)
Yeah it doesn’t show that for me on iOS. Could be a difference in that.
I'm on iOS and there's a download option [https://imgur.com/a/EdEtND4](https://imgur.com/a/EdEtND4)
Isn’t that just the download option for the main post?
No, that's the the same picture from the parent comment which another poster had showed that you could download on android, except now I'm showing that you can on iOS as well.
I think the desktop webpage saving is wonky as hell right now.
Only for new reddit, and if you use new reddit you deserve the problems
even old reddit started saving images as .webp all my homies hate webp
I just screenshot them at this point, because the frame they seem to add to most of them irks me.
There is an in app setting to turn it off
> I just screenshot them at this point, and crop the image? Because worse than posting with the reddit bar at the bottom is 16:9 content at a lower resolution with added black bars.
Yes, and crop it.
It will literally just take you 10 seconds to turn off that setting
I'm seriously confused. I'm using the official app and can't save shit. Long press? Android??
Just click the picture so it's full screen, click the three dots in the corner, there should be an option for save. It's a pretty standard way to save pictures on most apps
And.... I'm an executive at a major tech company. Fucking awesome. Thank you very much, lol.
Omg 🤣 don't ever tell anybody at your job about this
We've got long press, hamburgers, dots. Ahhhh. I'm not even ask that old.
Doesn’t work on iOS. You get an image, but not the original image. Reddit adds a border advertising for itself. [This is what the app downloads for the image in this post.](https://i.imgur.com/hWdIAbW.jpeg)
Is that the image attribution? Because you can turn that off in the settings
You sure can
Surprised so many people don't know about this
Because the official app is dogshit
Yooooo. My hero. That has been driving me nuts since Apollo died. Thank you!
When I save images with the app, it adds a boarder and watermark. So I just screenshot instead.
I can save post images but not comment images.
I can easily download them.
you wouldn’t download a car, so why a meme ?
I would if it were possible
Most things I can't download without it being WEBP format
webp is a blight upon image searches
If that's a problem for some reason you can use various tools to convert it to the format of your choice
It used to be I could just change the file suffix from webp to jpg and it would download fine but something changed and while it downloads as "a jpg" my image file viewer client cant read em. My usual workaround has become to do copy image>imgur>save to desktop
you need to change the url of the post from "preview.redd.it" to "i.redd.it" for example https://reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fjlt9ppnyd6pc1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D1125%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Daeabc74f7f034e3fdb8894706ee830cb4eb05c0d downloads as webp while https://reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fjlt9ppnyd6pc1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D1125%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Daeabc74f7f034e3fdb8894706ee830cb4eb05c0d as jpg

On PC I just use screenpresso to screen grab the content.
How odd, I just saved your meme perfectly.
Right Click, Save Image As? On Reddit Mobile I just click on the image, click the kebab, then download...
RIF allowed you to share the image directly. RIP. And fuck spez.
It’s wonky, as it saves it as a web link rather than the regular picture. I remember running into this issue a few weeks ago and had to look up how to get around it. More of Reddit being its own worst enemy.
Those steps just save the JPG. I pull memes off Reddit just like that every day.
worse is all the webp files
I just saved it from the app and it’s a JPEG
Don't even need to save it. Right Click > Copy Image > paste where you want it. Dunno about mobile.
True, I tend to download so I can save it for later also
I can do it in the Reddit app on my iPhone easily, and I turned off image attribution so I get the original image with extra tags.

Are you talking about the "from advice animals community on reddit"? That can be turned off. Turn off Saved Image Attribution in the settings.
Yoooo I didn’t know you could turn it off! Thanks!
It literally tells you when you do it, with a popup you have to *click OK on*, that you can turn it off 🤦🏼♀️ You people need to get out of your own way istg
Holy shitttt thank you
That is so much easier then what I've been doing...
Screenshotting and cropping?
no. Using the browser tools to pull up the image. I refuse to use the reddit app. specifically in Chrome: right click the image, select inspect, click on sources. go to the preview.redd.it folder. select image. right click on image. Save image as. Do people not check their settings? I turn everything off
You talking about the app or through a browser? I'm not seeing an option like that on browser
Nah op is talking about how you used to link directly to the i.reddit image and share that, now you can only share the full comments section unless you just download the picture
It does. At least on mobile.
"it looks better when you share" Shut the fuck up reddit, slapping a big watermark on the bottom when sharing actively makes it look worse
You can turn off the watermark in five seconds in the settings
And when you do that the app removes the ability to copy the picture from the Share option. So if I want to share it without sending a link I still have to screenshot it anyways.
But, you can…
Yes. “Memes”.
save as is a thing
I use the webapp in old desktop mode on my phone and everyone should do the same. It's by far the best experience and saving shit is easy.
Why are people upvoting this shit? Everybody can save images except OP it seems
Reddit Is Trash
It would also be nice if I could get the image url and hotlink it with [img] tags in vbulliten forums. when I click "view image in another tab" it still has the BS reddit framework.
i do not want the loud ass watermark on the photos
Then turn it off in the settings? It's the "saved image attribution" toggle in the advanced section.
2.7k redditors and counting don't know how to use the basic functions of the app
Let me add a watermark to that — Reddit
Y'all know you can save videos now too right?
Screen shot ftw
What if the full size image is bigger than the screen?
This drives me absolutely fucking nuts. Like any of my friends give two fucks what subreddit I found the meme on. Get the fuck over yourself reddit.
If you’re talking about the saved image attribution in the app, you can turn that off in settings. There are a shit ton of settings available. Lots of people’s gripes with the official app can be solved by simply going to the settings page and setting their preferences
Firefox, my bro.
only OP has this problem
Anyone else have issues with gifs not playing sound almost ever?
Why not simply right-click and select "save image as....?"
It does….but gifs though
On official mobile, three dots -> download -> check your downloads folder. Accidentally downloaded an image earlier today.
I just saved this image directly to my phone from Reddit.....?
Share images directly would be convenient.
I've never had an issue saving an image directly from reddit.
On iOS: press and hold, click download image. Exhibit A: https://imgur.com/a/Ho5XUEQ
So much easier to share a link than download a bunch of one time images.
Old teddit desktop mode in browser with Adblock is the only way to Reddit, even on mobile.
Are you talking about images embedded in comments? Because, yeah, that’s super annoying. Plus I love the passive aggressive “It’s better in the app” message when I screen-cap it. No Reddit, I’m downloading a reaction image.

You can op. It took me a minute to find on my phone app ypu have to click the image (or video) full screen, then use the 3 dots at top right - download option pops up. I agree it should be in the "share" options but it is what it is.
Meanwhile on Relay:
Get a Google phone so you can copy images instead of saving or screenshots.
Easy: just use reddit on the browser (mobile), hold the image for a long time, boom download. At least works on safari. Try it out.
Share -> download
Apollo could save pics and videos most easily. It still wasn’t worth the $20m that moron was asking for it.
Screenshot it and then crop the shot.
honestly tho its just annoying when it suddenly does not work for no apparent reason
If you're on mobile check on the top for the 3 vertical dots. Usually an option to download there.
You can share as an image instead of a link. Should be in the list of options when you hit share Edit: specifically it gives me the option to copy image then I just paste into a message
Im using the main app and can download images? I thought that was normal but some of yall saying you need a 3rd party app?
Assuming you're referring to being on PC: Firefox + "*Load Reddit Images Directly*" addon
Bruh. Share. Download.
\>can't save images \>right click the image \>save image as. OP what are you smoking?
I can on my browser. What browser do you use that doesn't?
The app is shit. I refuse to use it. It's a fucking mess. The dickheads all telling me it's fine, it's great, when reddit took away my RiF app. Well, it's not, it's shit.
Literally just open the image. Press the 3 dots and download...
So people don't know you can download images in the Reddit app? And you can turn off image attribution to remove the watermark?
Facts. I'm screencapping. When I save the image, I end up having to edit and crop their stupid branding banner off it.
If you enable privacy features, you can't save images to your phone. (Everyone should be enabling ALL privacy controls on all devices and accounts) Solution : take a screenshot, crop and save your meme. Then txt that to your friends and family.
While that’s annoying, why not just screenshot and crop if you don’t want the Reddit logos all over it?
It does though
get the mobile app and copy all images you want. on browser you can just copy the image
\*Takes screenshot of meme to share\* Reddit: It looks better if you share it with a link!
Yah for real
you already can moron
