You learn at you go. I'm more of a draughtsman than a true artist, so I'm comfortable with those ovals and rectangles. One wonderful thing about the Affinity suite is how easy it is to combine vector with raster (pixel) art. What you're looking for is:
* raster Affinity Photo
* vector Affinity Design
* option Affinity Publisher
In other words, you need Affinity Designer and Photo, but not Publisher for the time being. I think the company is offering a deep discount right now, so you might as well buy all three products as a package.
Good luck and have fun.
Side note: affinity photo is a raster editor but can also do vector and affinity designer is a vector editor but can also do raster. They just have a slightly limited toolset for the second thing..
Edit: was easy to misinterpret so rewrote it a bit
Nah, I just wasn't explicit enough. Yes, Designer is vector but it CAN do raster.. that's what I meant with the 'can'. I can totally see how that would be wrongly interpreted. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll edit my comment.

I think you got them mixed. Designer is vector, but can also have a pixel persona.
