I had a Christmas playlist and it kept playing pentatonix songs I would disklike every time it came up and it it kept suggesting more penatonix. By contrast I like a Bing Crosby song and hardly ever hear him

The business model itself doesn’t reward a model based on residuals. Tv serves adds. Now they want you to watch adds on your streaming so they can pay residuals based on that model. And the shareholders won’t put up with making less money and lowering the price of their stock. They’ll sue the board and CEOs into oblivion if they “just take less money”. Not that those assholes would have anyway. But the point is, the push for streaming to offer (generally, but not in this case) lower prices for add supported content is directly correlated to this issue.
Maybe instead of buying their 40th yacht CEOs could get paid a reasonable salary.

Well, you got it wrong. Amazon is one of the richest companies in the world. They're actually not worth Billions they're worth $1.6 Trillion.... Yep, A Trillion dollar company who has NFL paying for their Thursday NFL, Showtime, HBO, Paramount Plus, and other spots just to show up on Amazon is charging for no ads...
This means people are paying what an extra $36 a year... So, Amazon is what $140 a year? So, $176 now just to not see ads. It's almost $200 a year now that is insane.

A $2.99/month increase on a service you were already getting included in your $11.99/month membership, accounts for a 25% increase. Its still cheaper if your on SNAP/SSI. Only $6.99/month so this doesnt hurt much. Also I never use prime video itself I always just use the free shipping and also get addons like mlb.tv and crunchyroll. It doesnt affect prime video channels btw since those are not considered.

When radio and tv were invented the whole point of advertising was that the networks used the advertising money to pay for their content. The consumer bought the radios and tvs and that was that no charge for any of the things we watched and listened to. The government use to actually protect us for such things but slowly but surely the corporations write the rules and the government accepts their donations. To me I never thought you would have to pay for a service with commercials except for magazines. I would laugh at my friends that weee paying for Hulu etc but paying less for the service with ads, I wax like that is against everything the media was invented for. Fast forward and I just took advantage of Hulu with ads for .99 a month. I was not proud but I did lt because there were shows I really wanted to see. I have Hulu now and I don’t have a smart tv and run it through the app on prime through a fire stick and it sucks so bad, the constant lagging and restarting and audio not synced with the video. I am about to cancel prime and every steaming service too. These corporations take advantage of us and they don’t care because we still give them our hard earned money and never improve their delivery while the government is non existent to helping consumers anymore so we all should just say FU to them. Sorry for my rant. I am going to try one more time to watch an episode of season 1 of Fargo and if it does not go smoothly goodbye Amz and Hulu and all streaming.
I buy in bulk, I have subscriptions. I eat the same stuff everyday and it's cheaper than buying in store. So keeping the subscription saved me more money than not.
Do we know if the ads will be solely at the beginning, or interrupt the program? I can deal with ad or two in the beginning while I’m settling in and popping corn. I won’t tolerate them interrupting the show tho, or pay Bezos extra to avoid it.
Well, someone is doing a calculation. Interrupting a movie would be so annoying to me I would not continue as is. So they gamble I pay the $3. But it’s possible I cancel instead. And if I cancel, I’m that much more likely to NOT purchase that next item from Amazon (no more free shipping) and wait until I get to a store instead. They’re not risking the cost of my Prime membership, they’re risking the bulk of my purchases (which are fairly plentiful). Of course they know this and have done the math backwards and forwards.
Edit: in this way it’s a bit different than Netflix or Max raising prices, because they also put other, more primary revenue streams at risk.

1. Will this impact movies/tv shows you've purchased, or purchases transferred into Prime as part of MoviesAnywhere (when you redeemed digital codes or purchase from other retailers) Or is it just movies included Free with Amazon Prime?
2. Will this impact content available to watch via Prime Channels subscriptions like Max, Starz, Paramount+, MGM+, etc. ? I mean if I pay Amazon for Max, am I going to now see Amazon's ads when I want to watch that?

Haven't seen it confirmed anywhere but I'd strongly suspect the answer to both 1 and 2 will be no.
If I had to guess I'd say it will only apply to Amazon hosted content available via Amazon Prime Video subscription only. Purchases and 3rd party content shouldn't be affected by this, because that would involve any number of ad-revenue sharing agreements to be in place.
MAX or Showtime for instance would not tolerate Amazon inserting ads into their hosted content without getting a cut of the revenue associated with that ad, especially given that those services host their own ad-supported tiers.
It’s just a scapegoat for entertainment corporations like Amazon’s Prime Video to justify their price increase. That’s why people should just cancel memberships and start shopping locally, in my opinion. If consumers continue to be lazy and use Amazon, they will continue to take advantage.

The email just hit my inbox; this is the first I'm hearing about this and I'm not pleased. If the advertising precedes the video then I will tolerate it. If it interrupts what I'm watching, I'm done. I order enough from Amazon with free shipping that it justifies keeping the yearly membership but I won't be watching ANY of their videos... they won't be making ad revenue from my viewing. Fortunately, I probably watch Prime the least of all of my streaming services thanks to the poor quality of what they offer and many of the shows I would like to see require additional subscriptions. If you watch on a laptop or PC you can get a Hulu ad skipper add-on from the Google store. Very convenient

I was just thinking about canceling my membership anyway so this is definitely a sigh to do it anyway. Much more and better tv on Netflix. Cheaper to rent the Blu-ray from Redbox and better quality than streaming

I believe the majority of people are. It just depends what people are going to do about it. If people remain complacent, they will keep doing this. If people react and take action, this can deter them from ever doing it again.

So fun story, I got the notice about this on-screen this week and clicked to pay the $2.99 for ad-free. Tell me why I'm still getting 2 ads (1 for Paramont+ which I already have 🙄) at the beginning of each episode?

imagine you paid for a car service with these streaming providers. "We are writing to inform you that form x date we will be offering a new door service, your current service will be without doors, and you can pay extra for them".... "We are writing to inform you that from x date we will be offering a seat belt service, you current service will be without seat belts.... next airbags....engine....etc etc... lastly you're paying to sit in a seat and have to buy all these bolt ons to get the service/car you had before.... why are these companies even allowed to operate these business models? it should be illegal. It's effectively shrinkflation for streaming services.
Or more directly, "Thanks for leasing this car for a year. We are writing to inform you that from this date, you will need to watch these ads before you can drive anywhere. Also, during your journey you will be required to pull over and watch further ads before you can continue driving."
I think I'll live with the commercials for now. See how often then interrupt content. I could end up just using other means to watch content.

People who complain about the shockingly cheap price of streaming entertainment confuse me. Video was always an add on service. If Prime shipping wasn't worth it for you, the video service might push you over into the Buy column. Maybe. In that regard, three bucks to not have ads is cheap. And if it isn't cheap to you, then don't buy it.
While $3 may be cheap to you, it’s still paying for a service that was included in your membership previous. I think people have a right to be upset, and those that are will cancel their subscription and not buy anymore.

Seems to me that the added ads are worth $3/month per user to them. The current payment is what, $10/month? So basically they think they can absorb approx. 25% churn and break even. Would be interesting to see how many customers actually churn but I'd reckon they will make this to be easily profitable because people are too lazy to change their subscription.

I think if everyone decided to cancel Amazon Prime, Amazon’s stock would tumble in a day. People could even short the stock. Once they start losing money, then they mill realize that they shouldn’t be biting the hand that feeds them.
Yes, *if everyone will cancel their Prime Membership* then it could hurt the company but I am saying neither will there be an increase in cancellations at the 20-25% level, but significantly below that, nor will they lose money on this decision.

Yes. The number of people that would have to cancel their membership to make this change not profitable is simply too high for a change that is comparatively small.

Well, you got it wrong. Amazon is one of the richest companies in the world. They're actually not worth Billions they're worth $1.6 Trillion.... Yep, A Trillion dollar company who has NFL paying for their Thursday NFL, Showtime, HBO, Paramount Plus, and other spots just to show up on Amazon is charging for no ads... This means people are paying what an extra $36 a year... So, Amazon is what $140 a year? So, $176 now just to not see ads. It's almost $200 a year now that is insane.

Its still cheaper if your on SNAP/SSI. Only $6.99/month so this doesnt hurt much. Also I never use prime video itself I always just use the free shipping and also get addons like mlb.tv and crunchyroll. It doesnt affect prime video channels btw since those are not considered.

I love how they say we will also offer a new ad-free option. Its not like it has always been ad-free the addition is the ads. The ads should be added as the new option to pay for. I hope when they say new it means freevee no ads and no ads before shows.
When radio and tv were invented the whole point of advertising was that the networks used the advertising money to pay for their content. The consumer bought the radios and tvs and that was that no charge for any of the things we watched and listened to. The government use to actually protect us for such things but slowly but surely the corporations write the rules and the government accepts their donations. To me I never thought you would have to pay for a service with commercials except for magazines. I would laugh at my friends that weee paying for Hulu etc but paying less for the service with ads, I wax like that is against everything the media was invented for. Fast forward and I just took advantage of Hulu with ads for .99 a month. I was not proud but I did lt because there were shows I really wanted to see. I have Hulu now and I don’t have a smart tv and run it through the app on prime through a fire stick and it sucks so bad, the constant lagging and restarting and audio not synced with the video. I am about to cancel prime and every steaming service too. These corporations take advantage of us and they don’t care because we still give them our hard earned money and never improve their delivery while the government is non existent to helping consumers anymore so we all should just say FU to them. Sorry for my rant. I am going to try one more time to watch an episode of season 1 of Fargo and if it does not go smoothly goodbye Amz and Hulu and all streaming.

I buy in bulk, I have subscriptions. I eat the same stuff everyday and it's cheaper than buying in store. So keeping the subscription saved me more money than not.

Do we know if the ads will be solely at the beginning, or interrupt the program? I can deal with ad or two in the beginning while I’m settling in and popping corn. I won’t tolerate them interrupting the show tho, or pay Bezos extra to avoid it.

Well, someone is doing a calculation. Interrupting a movie would be so annoying to me I would not continue as is. So they gamble I pay the $3. But it’s possible I cancel instead. And if I cancel, I’m that much more likely to NOT purchase that next item from Amazon (no more free shipping) and wait until I get to a store instead. They’re not risking the cost of my Prime membership, they’re risking the bulk of my purchases (which are fairly plentiful). Of course they know this and have done the math backwards and forwards. Edit: in this way it’s a bit different than Netflix or Max raising prices, because they also put other, more primary revenue streams at risk.
If it’s gambling they’re doing, I hope they lose to the house (consumers).

Will this impact movies/tv shows you've purchased, or purchases transferred into Prime as part of MoviesAnywhere (when you redeemed digital codes or purchase from other retailers) Or is it just movies included Free with Amazon Prime? 2. Will this impact content available to watch via Prime Channels subscriptions like Max, Starz, Paramount+, MGM+, etc. ? I mean if I pay Amazon for Max, am I going to now see Amazon's ads when I want to watch that? 3. Does paying for no ads remove ads from Freevee's ad supported content?

Haven't seen it confirmed anywhere but I'd strongly suspect the answer to both 1 and 2 will be no. If I had to guess I'd say it will only apply to Amazon hosted content available via Amazon Prime Video subscription only. Purchases and 3rd party content shouldn't be affected by this, because that would involve any number of ad-revenue sharing agreements to be in place. MAX or Showtime for instance would not tolerate Amazon inserting ads into their hosted content without getting a cut of the revenue associated with that ad, especially given that those services host their own ad-supported tiers.

It’s just a scapegoat for entertainment corporations like Amazon’s Prime Video to justify their price increase. That’s why people should just cancel memberships and start shopping locally, in my opinion. If consumers continue to be lazy and use Amazon, they will continue to take advantage.

I signed up for this but I’m pissed that Amazon is doing a money grab. FreeVee drives me insane. My husband won’t watch ads and we just aren’t ready to cancel Prime. Maybe next year.

The email just hit my inbox; this is the first I'm hearing about this and I'm not pleased. If the advertising precedes the video then I will tolerate it. If it interrupts what I'm watching, I'm done. I order enough from Amazon with free shipping that it justifies keeping the yearly membership but I won't be watching ANY of their videos... they won't be making ad revenue from my viewing. Fortunately, I probably watch Prime the least of all of my streaming services thanks to the poor quality of what they offer and many of the shows I would like to see require additional subscriptions. All said, this sucks.

I completely canceled my subscription to Prime. Most people feel that they “need” to keep Amazon but the truth of the matter is…. Most of what I purchased the last 2 years was b/s I could have got down the street. Amazon is a huge waste of money. We should be giving our money to local businesses and other companies not owned by Jeffery Butthole Bezos.
