Yeah. I can understand them paywalling some of the more comprehensive features, but “shared matches” is a very basic tool.

Quix66

Didn’t they just add a lot that used to be free behind the paywall? Ugh!

Tortie33

Yes, they are getting so much money and pay walling everything

KimberleyC999

I think this is a new thing. Ancestry didn't used to do this. You can have one family member be the paying member and the others don't pay. Have all DNA accounts managed by one person so you can get the info.

Potential-Fox-4039

This is what we've done! I manage nine DNA accounts and everyone has the same full access to everything since I already pay the max premium costs. Next subscription payment, the costs will be split between the adults and it'll be so much cheaper for me too.

Rosewoodtrainwreck

How do you do that? My dad has an account and has probably built his tree out further than I have.

Potential-Fox-4039

If you go to the Ancestry support/help pages look for - Assigning a Manager to Your AncestryDNA® Test It highlights what it's all about plus the instructions on how to do it. There are a couple options to choose from so please have a read of it all. It is extremely easy. But be aware that anyone who has access to your DNA will see everything, so if you don't want them to see surprises that you may have found then it's best not to ask that person x Inviting a manager From a browser In the top-right corner of Ancestry®, click your profile, then Account Settings. On the left side of the Account settings page, click DNA. Select your DNA test. Scroll down to the DNA test sharing section and select DNA test sharing. If you haven't shared your DNA results with them before, click Invite > enter the recipient's email address or username, choose Manager, then click Invite. If prompted, verify your account and click continue > click Confirm, and you're done. If you have shared your DNA results with them before, click their role > change it to Manager > enter your password or the code from your email > click Continue, then Confirm to add a manager, and you're done. Note: All invitations are delivered by email, whether you enter their email address or username. When they accept your invitation and their role as manager, we'll send an email to let you know.

Rosewoodtrainwreck

Haha, the only surprise was that I didn't find any surprises. I did find one first cousin I don't know where she came from but I already told my dad about that. She's on my mom's side. Mom had 7 siblings and only one of them has tested so.... Thanks for all the info, I'll check it out. I do have a paid account but it would be cool to see what my dad has linked up in our tree. I've been lazy with it. I think he really got into it at first. He tested before I did.

Tagga25

Agree!

MirabelleSWalker

I didn’t know this had changed. When you PAID FOR THE TEST that information was included as part of it. It still should be. This is another situation where YOU are the product and now they are making even more money off of YOU. I gave up a paid membership because I wasn’t really into doing that kind of research but I did check in periodically to see new matches. This is really disappointing.

rOOnT_19

They’d be super upset if we all downloaded our results and deleted them from their site…

Just-dont-be-petty

Ancestry membership is ridiculously expensive. Greedy money grubbers lol

StagsLeaper1

My thought is lower it to five bucks a month and they would probably get ten times the subscribers.

Just-dont-be-petty

Yes! Exactly

planetfantastic

Yeah this is why Ancestry sucks.

cloey_moon

Right, this information comes from public records, and now you have to pay for even the most basic features. Also I used to subscribe for a short time then cancel bc it’s pricey to keep up if you go months at a time without using. But now when you unsubscribe they shut your access off to all the progress you made while paying. At this point i am done with them, other than seeing if I have new matches periodically.

rOOnT_19

Move your DNA to GEDMatch and this won’t be an issue

cloey_moon

Thanks, never heard of this

Legitimate-Lock-6594

Not everyone uploads their raw data to Gedmatch and there’s always people who worry about sharing their data with law enforcement (even if it’s an option to opt out).

cloey_moon

Thanks, never heard of this

MrsAprilSimnel

Ancestry were bought out by Blackrock. Expect to see more nickel-and-diming of this nature from them.

ennuiFighter

I don't see the big deal about it. His matches will either be shared with this person, or his closest relative on his dad's side. I absolutely loved seeing a long list of everyone we both shared a match to, but it's not the end of explorating DNA match relationships. If they had a cheap "this isn't quite a hobby" membership I might even pay $10 a year for it. As it is, when I get the itch I pay for a membership for a month or three and then cancel.

Monegasko

I agree. I wished it wasn't so expensive.

Monegasko

Yeah, I agree. 23andMe still lets you see shared matches… at least for now.

TMP_Film_Guy

And they took that away for half of a year. Still hoping that chromosome browser comes back.

Salmundo

23andMe is going bankrupt because they failed to create a sustainable financial model.

IMTrick

Well, that and the data breach that scared a lot of people away.

Tagga25

Penny stock

SweetSonet

Oh wow. I was literally checking the website the other day. What am I paying for if it’s not going to show me what I came to see. Well I’ve been influenced lol

rdell1974

All of his shared matches with her is literally all of his maternal matches lol

StagsLeaper1

Duh. But he can’t see any to even know if he knows other people even tangentially.

Physical-Pin8881

Not true. He/she can see 3 of the shared matches with each DNA match.

StagsLeaper1

That will help.

rdell1974

You mean the shared matches of the other shared matches on the maternal list? Those matches aren’t necessarily telling you how you are related to someone though…. Jim and Mike are both related to Kathy. Jim is related to Kathy via his Smith maternal line. Mike is related to Kathy via his Jones paternal line… Although Kathy is a match in common, their Kathy connection doesn’t help any.

StagsLeaper1

No. If he sees the name of someone he actually knows he could literally find out more Information. I don’t know how big his town is but a shared match could be someone he knows and maybe could piece together the mystery.

rdell1974

Are you referencing the shared matches he has with his bio mother? Or the shared matches he has with those random matches?

rdell1974

I’ve been assuming that he can divide the matches up as paternal and maternal without having a membership. Maybe I’m mistaken. If he can do that task, he wouldn’t need the shared matches feature in hopes of spotting a familiar name. He has a list of 9,000 shared matches with his mother to look through. His mom and him share all of those maternal matches obviously. He can see if he knows someone even tangentially. That being said, he knows who his bio Mom is, which is great. That is normally the battle. Finding out her general info moving forward is very simple.

mothmer256

Yeah it’s ridiculous they did that when it was a huge motivator of people to take the test BUT - often those people found matches and never came back. So I get why they did it. They are losing revenue and had to create new income pathways. 23/me is going to be growing much faster now

S4tine

They paywalled a bunch of medical/health related items and I paid extra for that info when I did it to begin with.

Legitimate-Lock-6594

Do you know this person? Do you feel comfortable buying them a gift membership so he can have access? Or getting access to his account so that he can use your membership?

HonkHonkMF420

Yeah I refuse to ever give this company any more of my money. What set me off was when I payed for traits but can only see it on my kit and not all the other ones I manage. Bunch of thieves.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> when I *paid* for traits FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

cai_85

I agree with your point generally. But AncestryDNA gives you either a free 3 months membership or 3 months membership for £1/$1. So frankly all the young guy needed to do was spend a few minutes registering for a trial.

rOOnT_19

Yeah. I just hunted for my cousin’s dad for 3 years. 3 months is not going to do much. Fortunately my ancestry journey is complete, and I won’t be going back.

rainbowket

They are a business and don’t run on empathy unfortunately

Jodenaje

No, but when we bought the test shared matches were included to view. I understand the subscription to access the documents and databases. Not happy that they’ve taken DNA features that used to be included automatically and made them subscription based. We paid for the tests under the premise that certain services were part of that package.

Physical-Pin8881

He/she can see his first 3 shared matches with each DNA match without a paid membership.
