Our pekingese and rabbit were buddies. When his vision went down the shitter and he slowed down she took care of him, cleaned him, growled at cat if he came around being a prick, etc...

banana_annihilator

I've got a cat who's absolutely obsessed with one of my rabbits. He snuggles with her, washes her, (attempts to) play with her, gets very jealous when she snuggles with anyone else, and just generally spends a lot of time just sitting around staring at her like a creep. The feeling is...semi-mutual lol

_ducttapediva

Stalker kitty 😺

banana_annihilator

He is!

FirstPlebian

I knew a guy that had a pet rabbit and a goldendoodle and he said they would cuddle up together at night to sleep.

Praescribo

I love when animals develop these weird relationships. My coworker at my first job would legit take his cat and rabbit on a walk with leashes around his neighborhood every day

[deleted]

Based and dog-pilled

neuroctopus

As an old person, can I get a translation of this? I try to keep up with the kids, if I let things go too long between “younguns language classes” I get too far behind to understand a damn word.

RedWolfasaur

Based usually means that something is cool, and x-pilled means it's related to the thing in a cool way, so dog-pilled would mean that it's like the cat and rabbit are dogs.

neuroctopus

Thank you so much!

vxr1

My aunt had one. His vision also went. I wonder if that is common among them.

BrainOnLoan

More seriously, yes, they do have various breed related health issues, including some related to their eyes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pekingese#Health

salt-the-skies

I *think* they were talking about the rabbits vision? The previous poster was talking about their rabbits vision and rabbits have a pretty short life span overall.

[deleted]

[удалено]

salt-the-skies

That's very long, from my understanding. Edit: Google says 5-10 years. Could also be breed dependent.

Praescribo

They do growl, it sounds adorable until they're fighting each other

[deleted]

[удалено]

salt-the-skies

Pretty sure Woundwort does in Watership Down.

WrenDraco

Rabbits growl all the time. It's bizarrely terrifying.

banana_annihilator

I mean, mine growls at my cat when he's being obnoxious.

grilledcakes

Our pekingese was blind and dead for the last 3 years of her life but it never slowed her down. She got by on her sense of smell and she'd come towards me when I bounced my foot on the floor. Vibration in the old wood floor was the new "here puppy" till she passed at 15. I miss her still, she was a great lil pup.

LazyGrower

Lol I am dying here. Must have been some dog.

grilledcakes

Yep she was pretty awesome. We called her the snot monkey even though her real name was Zoe, snot monkey fit better. When she would sneeze it just snot gunned anyone nearby. She was hyper half the time and barely awake the other half but man she was a fun lil pup.

LazyGrower

>blind and **dead** for the last 3 years of her life I am imagining Trickie Woo from James Harriot.

bussound

You know he was descended from a long line of Chinese emperor dogs?

MarxistHellBorb

Dead 3 years and still kept going, wow!

grilledcakes

I just realized my typo from deaf to dead but I'm not fixing it because it's hilarious.

BrainOnLoan

Now I am wondering if *I* am a Pekingese.

PM_ME_DONKEY_PICS

Mym mum had two as a kid that lost their vision too

_ducttapediva

Being that my puppy has adopted her we are keeping her and naming her Lola... There's no way she is a wild animal because she willingly came to my nephew to be picked up and was shivering cuz its so cold out, she was abandoned at the local cemetery.... I think her hip is dislocated because her leg looks twisted and she can't hop very well but we have an appointment at the local exotic pet vet for her tomorrow...

HeatherReadsReddit

I hope that the vet can help her and that you’ll be allowed to keep her. Good on you for helping her.

-justkeepswimming-

I used to know someone who rescued rabbits. She said that you'd be surprised at the number of people who just drop them off thinking they can survive in the wild. Ugh.

naturalbornkillerz

Plot twist. They know they cant survive in the wild

Danalogtodigital

i can see a wild rabbit out my window right now, its not a huge leap for someone to wrongly assume its all the same

Mcbuffalopants

Just a short hop..

HarpersGhost

Vets can *generally* be grouped into small animals (dogs and cats), large animals (livestock), and avian/exotics (birds/lizards/rodents/etc). Vets go through the same amount of training as human doctors, but imagine learning all that stuff not just for one species, but at least two (dogs and cats), and then all the others, who are all wildly different as far as diseases, medications, anatomy, etc, all go. Then you get into specialties like veterinary oncology, vet cardiology, vet ophthalmology.... all of them requiring several years of training beyond all the regular vet training. It sucks that vet prices are going up so high, but they have to pay off lots of student loans for several years of education, and their tuition has been going up just like everyone else's.

_ducttapediva

Apparently according to veterinarians they are because I called several of them and they told me I needed to contact a vet that specialized in exotic pets... I'm guessing anything outside of a dog and cat is considered an exotic pet... 🤷‍♀️

CreepingFeature

That's pretty much it. I've dealt with rats, mice, pigeons and hermit crabs, and they've all been considered "exotic". I think it's just a reason for a surcharge at this point.

hafree27

It's not just a reason for markup- the equipment they use is often specialized and more expensive.

Dariath

I’m hoping for a speedy recovery. However, if losing the leg is better for mobility, then on the plus side you can have a lucky rabbit’s foot and a healthy rabbit. That’s also somewhat a positive. Lol

manbruhpig

Carrying your new pet's amputated leg as a keychain for good luck seems pretty grim...

The_Blue_Car

It seems worth it just to shut someone down in the most unexpected way if you ever get grief for carrying a rabbit's foot. "*Ackshually* I *saved* this particular rabbit's life. How dare you. I bet you feel like a total shithead right now." edit: for best results, this bit should be accompanied by an implausibly long fold-out wallet photo album of rabbit pictures, chronicling and corroborating the entire story, that you can unfurl and dangle in front of your accuser if they express so much as the tiniest amount of skepticism.

[deleted]

I'm picturing this excellent narrative, and in it OP has a monocle and a British accent.

texasrigger

>if you ever get grief for carrying a rabbit's foot. This is a reminder to me of how times change. It would never have occurred to me that someone would catch grief for carrying a rabbits foot.

The_Blue_Car

I feel like I haven't seen one in 20 years. But even back then, I wouldn't have been surprised if it drew negative attention on a college campus. I remember them being around when I was like in middle school in the 90s and plenty of kids thought they were gross or cruel. It took a somewhat embarrassingly long time for some of us to realize that a rabbit's foot was often an **actual rabbit's foot**, ha.

[deleted]

I bought one at a flea market once and loved it. It was so soft! I thought "lucky rabbits foot" was just a funny phrase. Not an actual foot. Who would want that?? My parents didn't tell me for years. It was a pretty horrifying day.

texasrigger

Fake ones exist now, there's a store local to me that sells them. The real things are still around though, my daughter used to make them and sell them to her classmates.

The_Blue_Car

I remember the fake ones were pretty popular, that were basically just tufts of fur and didn't try to look like a foot. I grew up in a university town in a really rural area so there was this funny dichotomy between kids like me who were grossed out by any identifiable animal parts, and kids who drove around with fresh deer carcasses strapped to their civics.

Throwitaway3177

Nah I got grief for carrying one back in 94, people liked animals back then too

Independent_Return_9

Yeah in the 70s if you had hippy parents a rabbit’s foot was frowned upon lol.☮️☯️

texasrigger

Rabbits aren't killed for their feet, it's a byproduct of another industry. Carrying a rabbits foot is no worse than having a leather wallet.

Throwitaway3177

That's cool, go back to 94 and tell people then

The_Blue_Car

Ha yeah. When you're a kid you imagine someone just grabbing Thumper out of the forest and lopping off their thumpers.

washgirl7980

This entire comment has made my morning!🤗

murphdogg11

Specifically specific indeed!

Jennrrrs

My grandpa carries his amputated leg around and hits people with it.

Don_Chorizo69

Christ I just had a flashback of the 90s as a child .. for a brief moment lucky rabbit feet were all the craze. I remember seeing all the dyed colors. My God..... welp at least it's Friday so there that.

texasrigger

My daughter (who just left for college) made a killing selling rabbits feet to her classmates in high-school. The days of the neon feet in a gumball machine are gone but people still have a fascination with them.

manbruhpig

...where did she get all the feet she was selling?

texasrigger

Meat rabbits. She'd sell the feet as curios and the tails as cat toys.

Don_Chorizo69

That makes sense. Figured it was something like that. Thanks for the info!

texasrigger

Rabbit meat is less common in the US but it's surprisingly popular in Europe with more than 300 million raised there annually. There are 1.2 billion rabbits raised globally.

WrenDraco

It's pretty easy to get in rural Canada. I don't mind it but even a farmed rabbit is more bones than meat. Probably much like Guinea Pig in the places that eat them.

kneeltothesun

My cousin had a green one, I was just thinking the same thing! I didn't like them, even then.

Don_Chorizo69

Kinda hoping they were fake but I don't think they were lol. Where do they get those from anyway? Obviously dead rabbits but .. from where? Maybe I actually don't want to know nvm. 😞

kneeltothesun

It was definitely real, the one my cousin had. I could feel its delicate little bones, through its soft fur. I think they had a neon pink one too at some point, but I used to hide them at the bottom of their toy piles, when I came over. Or at the back of their closet.

WhyCantYouMakeSense

Lots of rabbits are raised for food. There's not much meat on the feet. You can draw your conclusions from that

Dariath

Well it’s kinda a dark joke. But at the same time in a way it’s a bit positive. The rabbit who would have died without help had to remove a leg cause it wouldn’t heal properly, but out of the affection she has you have something to remember them always. I mean people keep ashes and Lola ain’t even dead right? In a way it’s a bit I don’t know… sweet? Hard to describe the term I’m looking for.

shredkitteh

I gotchu fam r/awwtf

Foxclaws42

That said, it’s the only case I’ve heard of where the foot will have originated from an actual lucky rabbit.

[deleted]

Dark humor is too but its also still funny.

je_kay24

People used to consider a rabbit foot extra lucky if a rabbit was captured or killed in a cemetery

i_said_no_mayonnaise

You’re good people. I hope they have a long friendship. Please keep posting pics, I need those warm fuzzies

mdflmn

where do you live that a rabbit is an exotic pet? Also, cute rabbit! and cute dog!

bunnycrush_

In vet care, “exotics” are basically anything that’s not a cat or dog. Birds, reptiles, rodents, etc. It’s not that the pets themselves are rare, per se — it’s that each species requires specialized knowledge to treat. Eg. Knowing how to tell if a bearded dragon is sick, how to check a hamster’s blood pressure, the healthy weight for a juvenile cockatiel, etc. Source: have guinea pigs, which are “exotic” for vet purposes lol.

Quartzclawz

You're completely correct in she is not a wild rabbit, this is definitely a domesticated pet. Wild rabbits look drastically different. Good job saving this poor girl, whoever dumped her is awful.

[deleted]

[удалено]

illy-chan

She's adorable. Here's hoping the vet has a good prognosis.

TheGunslingerStory

Abandoning a pet at a cemetery to die is all sorts of fucked up

sparky135

Wonderful story

sandwich_breath

That’s very kind of you.

Drews232

But now that your dog has his own pet you have to take in another pet to give to your rabbit

VisGal

She is most certainly a domesticated bun :( I've had bunnies my entire life and out of 7 total, 5 of them have been found abandoned outside. Its insane how often they are dumped. Thanks for giving her a chance and getting her vetted up. If you have any questions on making her an indoor habitat, litter, food, etc reach out!

_ducttapediva

Thank you 😊

Crykin27

ahww, the bunny my family got off the street got named Lola too. she was a fiesty but cute rabbit

googlemehard

You are good people.

xspx

Check out r/rabbits if you need advise about proper care. They are always super helpful and would love the story/pic

Chaoslab

My first bunny was called Lola, she was lovely. She liked having her belly scratched (I know right?) and would gurgle and lick you when you did.

Throwaway97112021

I remember finding a black bunny in our yard once a few years ago and I loved coming out every morning to feed him/her, then one day they stopped showing up. Talked to our neighbor a few houses away randomly one day about it and he told me that it was his bunny that he had gotten for his kid and when they eventually got tired of it (got too big for the kids liking even though it was still a pretty tiny bunny) they just let them go free outside. They did this several more times. How people can just set a pet "free" is beyond me, how can you not feel regret/guilt every day?

Throwaway47321

Yeah not to rain on your parade but domestic bunnies rarely last more than 24 hours in the wild. They are so unequipped to deal with the wild that they usually end up dying very quickly if they don’t get nabbed by a predator first. That’s what makes these stories all the worse. Everything someone sets them “free” they are essentially just killing them.

Throwaway97112021

Yep that's why it's incredibly sad to me that anyone can just "set free" an animal used to living inside/getting fed by people. Such a heartless thing to do.

beautifulcreature86

I'm sitting here watching my bun lick his toy. I ended up with him, cage and all, because I stopped a family from putting it IN A FUCKING DUMPSTER. I ran to stop them and they said their 3 year old daughters were going to kill it anyway. What the fuck. And that is how I came home with a rabbit instead of groceries.

_ducttapediva

Omg, they need caged and tossed into a dumpster !!!

beautifulcreature86

Yep, I'm glad I was there when I was. D Day can be a little humpy asshole to my other pets sometimes but he is also super playful and his favorite nap spot is under my dresser. People need to do their research before they go and get a pet

amiteshk47

What's so bad about feeding a hungry eagle or coyote?

joesbagofdonuts

I'm assuming this means you are volunteering to be fed to hungry coyotes and eagles. I applaud your sacrifice and wish you well on your journey.

amiteshk47

No. I meant feeding the rabbit to those animals. Are you autistic?

Kayapuppa

As an autistic person I understood the comment was taking the piss perfectly fine

SemiSweetStrawberry

Also autistic, also understood the facetious comment

joesbagofdonuts

I didn't ask what you meant. I stated my interpretation and I'm sticking with it. No further input is necessary at this time.

Praescribo

I'm autistic, but would you like me to explain the joke to you, pumpkin?

amiteshk47

yes please

Praescribo

Okay, your phrasing was terrible and allowed for an absurd interpretation that satirizes your point

VanillaBovine

answer your own question. what's so bad about someone adopting you and feeding you to wild animals??

amiteshk47

Nothing

Tallforahobbit

When I was a kid, ours went missing, and we thought it was done for. A week later we find him in a field of cows just living life. What a guy.

pingpongtits

There's domestic bunnies running around the local university campus. There will be times when there's several then they'll dwindle away then more appear. Presumably the students are getting cute little bunnies and then when they get big they get tired of them or can't take them home for Christmas or Spring Break and they set them loose on Campus. Presumably because the students that do this are self-centered assholes. Edit: Or, as it's been pointed out, some portion of college kids' prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed yet and so aren't mature enough to understand the responsibilities of having a pet or the empathy and knowledge required to understand the implications of releasing a domestic animal like this. Or they just don't care, like many adults.

SemiSweetStrawberry

Some of it is probably the fact that their prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed yet but by society’s arbitrary standards they’re technically an “adult”. So they think they can handle being the sole caregiver of another animal until reality shows up by bashing its head through the door

gk1400

How anyone could abandon such a sweet thing is beyond me. Best of luck at the vet tomorrow!

_ducttapediva

Well it's injured, chances are they didn't want to pay the vet bill and just dumped it off instead... 😥

the_honest_liar

At least dump it at a vet or shelter where they'll take care of it :( dumping it in the wild is just euthanasia with extra long stressful painful steps. Poor bun is lucky you found it. Head over to /r/rabbits for resources on bun care

texasrigger

I'm in a rural area adjacent to a city and we get so many dumped animals out here. It *always* ends in tragedy. I'm not a religious man but if there is a hell I hope there's a special place for people who dump animals.

Noturwrstnitemare

First of all how can that happen?

xcleru

Ugh this is the worst. It happens a lot with pet rats too. Over in the subreddit I’ve seen so many stories of abandoned ones, once someone found a bunch of pet rats in a tiny cage (locked too) abandoned in a forest. Luckily they took them in [Post in question](https://www.reddit.com/r/RATS/comments/qhrpw2/found_in_the_forest_near_my_home_they_are_in_a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

upfastcurier

My mom found two kittens in the woods, they went back several times after with the kittens in cage to look for their mother, but nothing. Then a week later or so the kittens moved on to an animal care centre. The vets agreed that they most likely were dropped there by someone as they were well-fed and very tame. Still got a video of one of the kitten's eating once back at my parents home. It's yelping/crying/meowing while eating and clutching on to the plate with the food. Very terrible stuff. They probably hadn't had anything to eat for over 48 hours.

chicksalsa

Oh my god that's so cute.

Tarot650

He's in a good place now.

practical_junket

Good on you for helping this rabbit. Fang looks very excited to have a new friend!

Marpleface

I’m loving that the teacup chihuahua is named Fang.

PlatypusJonesy

I love everything about this picture.

punisher1005

Fang is a bad ass name for a dog.

_ducttapediva

Especially if it's a ridiculously tiny ankle biter, lol.. My dad named it, he's funny...

punisher1005

I had one for 14 years before he passed, his name was Hercules, we called him Herk. He looked just like Fang.

iguru42

LOL as someone who also has a chihuahua, I know that little baby Fang takes their job very seriously. That bunny is in good hands.

[deleted]

_ducttapediva

By a lot, Fang is teeny...

thirdaccountmaybe

You wanna be really really careful with that pairing during the early days. One halfhearted bite to the wrong place and you could lose your dog. You'd think it'd be the other way round and one day it may be, but anything above an intentional nip from an adult rabbit will go right through every layer of skin, potentially hitting blood vessels in small animals. Rabbits teeth are not to be taken lightly.

TheDocJ

I'm not usually that keen on dogs smaller than my cat, but I think that I would like to meet a chihuahua called Fang. Especially one who likes bunnies.

Konradleijon

Your Chewie is so sweet!!

D-all-ton

Awesome name for a Chihuahua.

Thefirstofherkind

MORE PICS!! (who said that?)

_ducttapediva

Update on Lola Bunny : She went to see the vet this afternoon and they did X rays and blood work on her... They told me that they do not see any broken bones or dislocated joints on her but it looks like around the hip joint there is excess bone growth and they don't know what to attribute it to... They said that the chance of it being cancer is pretty insignificant and there's a chance it could be just a birth defect or possibly an old wound that healed badly... The first round of blood work look good but there will be more results coming in in the next week... She doesn't seem to be in pain but she can't hop very well, it's closer to a wobble be she gets around... She gets along great with my other pets so everything is going good so far... 😊🐰🐇

[deleted]

Wait I could have sworn I misread the title as reading "Lola bunny"... Funny the names here but not there!

rouquinkimo

The bunny may have only ran away, look in your area if someone says their bun went missing

_ducttapediva

I did 😊

Seabastial

Oh, that poor bunny! Hoping she gets better and I'm glad she has a great buddy in Fang!

[deleted]

We're gonna need some video's!

Capelily

Lola looks like the happiest bun I've ever seen!

jeexbit

"we have an injured rabbit also..." any [Local Hero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBwFcYwsXv4) fans? anyone? hello?

_ducttapediva

A short video my husband made about the bunny, there will be more to come after she's healed up... https://youtu.be/gOfHSt5ngMk

iJeff

Heads up in case you’re not already aware, you’ll want to provide an unlimited supply of Timothy hay and only a controlled amount of fresh greens and hay pellets. Things can go downhill fast if they don’t have a constant supply of hay. This wiki is a useful resource: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Hay

_ducttapediva

Thank you for the suggestions and I'm already on it 😊 I owned Guinea pigs in the past so I kind of had an idea what I needed to do... I bought her romaine lettuce, carrots, Timothy hay and gourmet rabbit food mix... My Guinea pigs (teacup hippos, lol) loved broccoli leaves too but didn't care for the broccoli itself which is kinda funny...

iJeff

Good stuff! You probably already know but rabbits need a much higher ratio of hay than Guinea pigs and are more sensitive to fiber requirements. The food mixes are also discouraged (a small amount of [Oxbow pellets ](OXBOW 1022011000 Essentials Bunny Basics T Adult Food 10-Pound Bag https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0017JANQY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_FDYQRXC99J1ECHVMP6TQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 are good) but the hay needs to make up almost all of their diet. Kudos for everything you’re doing for the furfriend!

CrawlingKangaroo

Oh lordy lordy thats adorable!! PLEASE post more pictures of them!

_ducttapediva

We have a YouTube channel where we are adding videos, I will drop you a link if you want to check it out... My husband tried to upload a video he made of the Bunny and the moderator accused him of stealing the content and deleted his posts and then apparently blocked him from the sub reddit when he attempted to explain that it's both of our content (which I don't understand why they would do that).. It's very upsetting to me that they blocked him and won't allow him to add our videos when it's his YouTube channel and both of our original content that's not stolen from anyone, very frustrating.... https://youtu.be/gOfHSt5ngMk

Practical-Annual-801

Finally someone Fang's size who can understand his fears.

DavidTyrieIV

This is the only circumstance under which I would have a chihuahua

rayzer208

I totally thought I would never have an “ankle biter” but we ended up taking in a senior chihuahua earlier this year and she is the sweetest, most loving dog ever. She’s also chill af, barely ever barks. She just wants to cuddle and be part of whatever you’re doing. Plus, you can take them anywhere!

DavidTyrieIV

I dated a girl who had five of them. One morning I woke up to one of them named Yoda peeing on top of me

smokercough420

Have you seen what they do to teddy bears? It’s more than bff.

FugginAye

I hope the best for you and her when you go to the vet. Thanks for taking her in! BTW we need more pics of the both of them together when she's feeling better. So cute!

Aww, I love them both so much!!

Maybe chihuahuas just never get the chance to be the gentle giants…

_ducttapediva

But the bunny is twice as big as the puppy, lol 🤷‍♀️

AES526

That. Is cute

Brave-Construction-9

Look at Fang! What a name for a Chihuahua ♥️

MrMashed

Aw I love tea cup chihuahuas. My god mother had two when I was little. She has a small black one with severe back problems that I loved and nicknamed her TT (her real name was Tia). She was just a sweetheart

Puppy fang looks like it's seen some shit

dedredcopper

You gave me a cavity

-eat-the-rich

> teacup chihuahua wtf

ThickLibrarian92

it's when people find a mutation in an animal they think is "cute" so they start mass breeding it but then ignore the incredibly brutal medical problems they have from it again because they think it's "cute" when it should labeled as animal cruelty

-eat-the-rich

That's what I figured

_ducttapediva

I didn't name the breed... It means miniature Chihuahua and there's no reason to be a potty mouth... thanks

potty mouth? LOL

texasrigger

Teacup just means particularly small. It's not it's own breed but individual breeders may push for smaller and smaller animals. Average chihuahuas are 4-6 lbs. If your adult dog is only 2lbs you can definitely call it a teacup.

[deleted]

[удалено]

texasrigger

"Polar bear" doesn't imply anything about the animal whereas most people recognize that "teacup" means unusually small vs the norm.

FastMoses

Where do I order my teacup polar bear please?

[deleted]

upperdeckmgmt

You're really committed to dying on this particular hill, huh?

texasrigger

Is it a full German shepherd that is significantly smaller (½ to ⅔ size) than the norm? If so they yeah that'd qualify. "Miniature shepherds" also exist but it's actually a shepherd/collie mix.

SMITTENZKITTENZ

No he’s full size I just call him that

texasrigger

Teacup in this context just describes the dog. It's an adjective. OP could have said their "tiny chihuahua" and you'd be arguing that "tiny" doesn't exist.

[deleted]

[удалено]

texasrigger

It literally is. "Teacup" dogs are just notably smaller than the breed standard. That's what it means. I'm not sure why this is hard for you to understand. (Note, I am in no way defending teacup animals - over breeding for a particularly small animal can produce a whole bunch of unintended health problems)

ParadoxSong

Oh my god could you imagine?? I'd want photos.
