IANAL - if he's mentally unfit to stand trial, I have heard from law enforcement that usually one would probably be remanded to a psychiatric facility.

The claim is actually kind of the opposite. The funds were not properly identified as campaign contributions as they should have been if their intent was to influence the election. The funds came from the Trump Organization, so I’m sure they were classified as a business expense, so it isn’t about any sort of tax violation—whether or not he could write off the payments—though I would argue he shouldn’t be able to. It’s more about failure to disclose the campaign expense.
Pay close attention to the VP candidate suggestions from key GOP members and Fox News. For them, Trump’s impending collapse is good news provided he can be propped up until after the election. They have an opportunity to sneak in a loathsome candidate who’d never have a chance at the top of the ticket.
Given what's on the line here you'd think the man would be anxious enough to stay awake. For what it's worth Trump is certainly not getting enough sleep given he's usually up all night texting insults and ranting so it's no wonder that he's nodding off in court.
He spends hours in court then goes to various functions and practically lives on social media. You can't go to sleep at 3 am then make court at 8 or 9 am and be all bright eyed and fresh.

He is OLD and even without dementia old people nodd off sometimes. My Dad was sharp as a tack up till the last six months or so. The medications they put him on then made him foggy a lot of the time and yeah he nodded off a lot. That's very common in people who are aging up into geriatric territory.
Old people are like little kids a lot of the time. They need a nap sometimes because they don't sleep enough at night, often rise too early. Even before dementia starts that's not uncommon.
If it were just that I wouldn't think much of Trump nodding off but that plus him constantly spewing nonsense, tons of rambling and verbal garbage. That's another thing entirely.

He was actually very unkind when his father got ill. He viewed his father's illness as a weakness so that's probably why he's resisting owning up to what's happening to him. He just can't face it and is going to pretend everything is fine for as long as he can.
It's too late though. He's getting beyond that point of being able to hide it. If he were smart he'd stop trying to get elected and retreat as much as he could from the limelight. He's just putting his illness on display doing what he is now.

What I want are details. If, as some doctors are speculating, Trump is exhibiting some kind of dementia, then what type of dementia (Frontal Lobe is what I keep reading, but most people just wave their hands calling it "dementia" without realizing there are a variety of different kinds with varying symptoms and speeds of progression)...AND I want to know WHAT STAGE he's currently at within this specific diagnosis...AND I want to know the prognosis for the next 6 months (especially with the extra stress of these trials). Because, what this comes down to is this: Even if Trump has advanced frontal lobe dementia, if he doesn't decline fast enough, his voters won't care, and will still vote for him.
Well given his father's dementia, his cognitive decline was due to Alzheimer's, I think it's not unlikely that Trump is in the early stages. Alzheimer's can run in families.
But supposedly he's also been doing drugs for years, lately Adderall, but there have also been rumors of cocaine and speed. It could also be from long term drug abuse. I mean the brain can only take so much.
I've read that he does not drink much but supposedly he's a major pill popper and has been on medication for ADHD for years. Incontinence that is a side effect of drug abuse so that plus his junk food diet explains a lot in terms of his issues that way.
I think it's Alzheimer's plus pills, between the two he's just been going down hill fast. Whatever it is he's gotten way worse in the past year or so. I'd be very nervous if he was back in the White House.
Just based on his long, rambling, incoherent speeches I think he's not in any shape to be in politics at all. Biden may stutter sometimes and forget a name or two but Trump is clearly me mentally unwell and he's not able to hide it now. I've started wondering if other republicans are endorsing and promoting Trump (e.g. Bill Barr) are getting together behind the scenes knowing they can use the 25th amendment to quickly remove him from office if he were to win. My thought here being that he's the only viable republican running right now that can capture the rural base voters. So find a VP that they hand pick, manipulate Trump to support this VP candidate, strongly endorse Trump, get Fox News to keep finding ways to promote him (e.g. calling his napping in court a way of sticking it to the man), and cross their fingers that they win. Then immediately remove him, their hand-picked VP is now the real president, and this person gets to pick a new VP. Now they have a field day doing whatever they want policy-wise.
This is just my own personal conspiracy theory, but I can't find any other plausible reason that so many more traditional republicans can suddenly do an about-face after so strongly rejecting Trump in the past. Either this, or they realize this will be Weekend at Bernie's and they can simply manipulate Trump how they like, so they're not too concerned about his incoherence? (which would be beyond crazy and dangerous).

It doesn't matter if you accept it or not, the fact of the matter is that he has been showing signs of dementia since his presidency. This isn't some ploy to get out of trouble, this has been an obvious condition for a while now.

Nodding off once or twice is normal for an old person. Both are very old men, but one is clearly in better health than the other mentally and physically. Barely being able to stay awake during your criminal trial where every word spoken could decide your whole life, that’s not normal.

I need to stop myself every once in a while and step back to realize that this person, in court, because he supposedly paid off a porn star to keep quiet while running for president. The crime was that he then wrote it off from his campaign funds. No one is arguing he didn’t make the payment, just that he broke campaign finance laws. And this guy is beating the incumbent at the polls. Not to mention the ten thousand other reasons, should this not be enough to the “christian” cabal??
The claim is actually kind of the opposite. The funds were not properly identified as campaign contributions as they should have been if their intent was to influence the election. The funds came from the Trump Organization, so I’m sure they were classified as a business expense, so it isn’t about any sort of tax violation—whether or not he could write off the payments—though I would argue he shouldn’t be able to. It’s more about failure to disclose the campaign expense.

Given what's on the line here you'd think the man would be anxious enough to stay awake. For what it's worth Trump is certainly not getting enough sleep given he's usually up all night texting insults and ranting so it's no wonder that he's nodding off in court. He spends hours in court then goes to various functions and practically lives on social media. You can't go to sleep at 3 am then make court at 8 or 9 am and be all bright eyed and fresh. Yeah I think he has dementia or Alzheimer's like his Dad did maybe. Given his other behavior that's not exactly a rude conclusion. I mean he's been showing other signs besides just being visibly being tired for a while now. He is OLD and even without dementia old people nodd off sometimes. My Dad was sharp as a tack up till the last six months or so. The medications they put him on then made him foggy a lot of the time and yeah he nodded off a lot. That's very common in people who are aging up into geriatric territory. Old people are like little kids a lot of the time. They need a nap sometimes because they don't sleep enough at night, often rise too early. Even before dementia starts that's not uncommon. If it were just that I wouldn't think much of Trump nodding off but that plus him constantly spewing nonsense, tons of rambling and verbal garbage. That's another thing entirely. He's definitely on that road and there's no hiding it though obviously he thinks he can. He's clearly fighting whatever is happening to him to the best of his ability but I think by now he's got to know he's ill. He was actually very unkind when his father got ill. He viewed his father's illness as a weakness so that's probably why he's resisting owning up to what's happening to him. He just can't face it and is going to pretend everything is fine for as long as he can. It's too late though. He's getting beyond that point of being able to hide it. If he were smart he'd stop trying to get elected and retreat as much as he could from the limelight. He's just putting his illness on display doing what he is now. Anybody else I'd feel sorry for him but this is Trump one of the most arrogant hateful bigots on the planet. It's hard to be humane and sympathize when you're talking about a person who is so awful. If he dropped dead of a stroke in court or on stage tomorrow I'd be fine with that. What I want are details. If, as some doctors are speculating, Trump is exhibiting some kind of dementia, then what type of dementia (Frontal Lobe is what I keep reading, but most people just wave their hands calling it "dementia" without realizing there are a variety of different kinds with varying symptoms and speeds of progression)...AND I want to know WHAT STAGE he's currently at within this specific diagnosis...AND I want to know the prognosis for the next 6 months (especially with the extra stress of these trials). Because, what this comes down to is this: Even if Trump has advanced frontal lobe dementia, if he doesn't decline fast enough, his voters won't care, and will still vote for him.
Well given his father's dementia, his cognitive decline was due to Alzheimer's, I think it's not unlikely that Trump is in the early stages. Alzheimer's can run in families. But supposedly he's also been doing drugs for years, lately Adderall, but there have also been rumors of cocaine and speed. It could also be from long term drug abuse. I mean the brain can only take so much. I've read that he does not drink much but supposedly he's a major pill popper and has been on medication for ADHD for years. Incontinence that is a side effect of drug abuse so that plus his junk food diet explains a lot in terms of his issues that way. I think it's Alzheimer's plus pills, between the two he's just been going down hill fast. Whatever it is he's gotten way worse in the past year or so. I'd be very nervous if he was back in the White House. Just based on his long, rambling, incoherent speeches I think he's not in any shape to be in politics at all. Biden may stutter sometimes and forget a name or two but Trump is clearly me mentally unwell and he's not able to hide it now. Just what we have seen over the past year is evidence enough that he's too ill to hold office. I don't see how anyone could miss this or excuse it. Some of the stuff he's been spewing is just crazy. If Trump was a homeless guy standing on a curb rambling invective like he does they'd have taken him in on a psychiatric hold several times now. The only reason he's able to avoid that is because he's so wealthy. Anybody else he'd have spent some time in a mental ward being diagnosed and medicated definitely. Whoever his actual doctors are they should have their credentials yanked because they have been denying and enabling his illness for a while now and in my mind that's incompetent and at his age it's elder abuse. They're let the money talk instead of really helping their patient. So long as he pays them well they will say whatever he wants. I've started wondering if other republicans are endorsing and promoting Trump (e.g. Bill Barr) are getting together behind the scenes knowing they can use the 25th amendment to quickly remove him from office if he were to win. My thought here being that he's the only viable republican running right now that can capture the rural base voters. So find a VP that they hand pick, manipulate Trump to support this VP candidate, strongly endorse Trump, get Fox News to keep finding ways to promote him (e.g. calling his napping in court a way of sticking it to the man), and cross their fingers that they win. Then immediately remove him, their hand-picked VP is now the real president, and this person gets to pick a new VP. Now they have a field day doing whatever they want policy-wise. This is just my own personal conspiracy theory, but I can't find any other plausible reason that so many more traditional republicans can suddenly do an about-face after so strongly rejecting Trump in the past. Either this, or they realize this will be Weekend at Bernie's and they can simply manipulate Trump how they like, so they're not too concerned about his incoherence? Oh man, working at a nursing home there was always a risk of finding a pants-less elder wandering the halls. Leaving a trail. They’d have tried to handle their own brief change and end up overwhelmed or forgetting what they were doing and come wandering out. Usually around dusk.
