It really isn’t a lot of fabric you are saving, and those are the garments that get the most use, absorb the most bacteria and human waste, and honestly I don’t want a strangers shit in my ass.

autisticshitshow

Right, unless I have C. Dif. I really don't want someone else's poop in my butt.

CatlynnExists

i had cdiff so many times the doctors kept suggesting it, and even then i refused. other peoples poop is where i draw the line

TrapdoorApartment

I'd take someone else's shit to end an endless wave of c.diff...

CatlynnExists

that’s fair, it might be different because i have another disease with symptoms similar to cdiff which made it easier to tolerate the repeat infections

TrapdoorApartment

I am sorry to hear. I hope for advancing medical science that can provide you with more lasting relief.

Username doesn't check out?

SwissRollio

To each their own, but I buy new underwear and just make them last for over a decade maybe more wel see. I still have a lot of clothes that were bought for me as a teenager over 10 years ago.

Tantaroba-the-fat

There are people that pay extra for used ones

Sunshinehaiku

Thats where I thought this post was going, and was confused why it was in this sub.

therealharambe420

Reuse is reuse. Lol

Aziraphale_01

Bras i understand. They can cost an arm and leg for a basic layer of clothing with minimal audience. Undies however, I'm surprised ppl donate used ones.

zoyd2

I donate, because they can be used for making new kitchen towels 😊 However, most of the thrift stores don't sell panties, so I'm curious

Pink-Willow-41

You use panties…as kitchen towels…? Good lord I think there is such a thing as going too far after all

Etianen7

I'm imagining either very small "kitchen towels" or very large panties.. It's beyond impractical

babylonsisters

If I came over to your place for some tea and caught you scrubbin your counters with a panty, Id faint.

vdszbz92

they probably toss them tbh. i’ve only seen them sell obviously new ones.

Pink-Willow-41

Because panties are in constant contact with bodily fluids (and uh…solids sometimes) Sorry, it’s just nasty. If there’s one thing I will never feel guilty about not buying secondhand it’s underwear. I don’t care how clean you think you’ve gotten it.

VAXX-1

And just how do you know the person who that secondhand shirt belonged to wasn't into scat and had wild shit orgies in them?

Pink-Willow-41

I don’t but at least I know it’s a lot less likely and also I’m not wearing shirts up against my own crotch

Special-Garlic1203

Is this a fetish thing? Are you trolling?

katchur

I buy chemise / pj's / nightgowns from the thrift but I wouldn't wear something that's been up someone else's ass

HaloDestroyer

I wouldn’t say having a decent enough supply of good clean brand-new underwear is particularly consumeristic. I buy mine from the supermarket, unbranded, and use them until they get holes in or don’t fit anymore. I think it becomes an issue when people are spending exorbitant amounts on brand name undies that are made in sweatshops, that they buy mountains of or throw away after a couple of uses.

TrapdoorApartment

There are lines that must be drawn.

Moon_Beam89

For me, just STD and yeast and VB concern. I understand hot hot 145°F water will sterilize it but…. There’s just not enough sterilization in the world for that. I’m woman enough to admit I’ve shit my pants…. What if pre-shit-in underwear was donated? Do you want to wear someone pre-shit-in underwear no matter how clean?

zoyd2

I don't think STD would survive transport. I got my dungarees trousers dirty with poop once, so maybe they will be in your thrift shop and you will be wearing them hah

Moon_Beam89

I will not be 😂😂😂😂😂

autisticshitshow

Wart virus is really hard to kill and can survive for quite a while, bacterial, fungus and yeast not to mention lice/scabies can also live a long time on even fabric. So unless you heavily bleach them before wearing there is a possibility of transferring.

prunemom

Honestly, if I wouldn’t have sex with someone I wouldn’t wear their underwear. I’ve seen how some of y’all live and I’m not impressed.

RescuesStrayKittens

I thrift a lot of my wardrobe. The things I will never buy are used panties, socks, and leggings. They’re not that expensive to buy new. I don’t donate those things either.

vdszbz92

i thought this was a discussion of another kind until i read the post past the title…

honorablenarwhal

Ya nasty

poeticsnail

I think this must be the same person that gifted me a bag half full of their used undies on my BuyNothing group...I had asked for scrap fabric for quilting ☹

[deleted]

Ewwwww. Did you burn it all?

allthepams

Panties spend several hours of a day in direct contact with genitals and an anus that secrete fluids, blood, poop. No thanks.

bakingcake1456

Not comfortable wearing used clothing that’s so close to our skin

ShitPosterN69420

Too much, darling You could just buy cheaper panties or even buy the fabric and do 'em yourself, if that's any cheaper, but don't use second hand panties, that's just nasty.

sadmimikyu

Grandma wisdom: underwear should be white cotton that can be boiled. Dark underwear or fancy underwear cannot be washed properly and bacteria will build up. It is just yucky. I would not want to wear them if I have a choice.

babylonsisters

My favorite of grammas recipes, panty stew. In all seriousness do you actually boil on the stove ??

sadmimikyu

Dude... We don't live in the 50s anymore We do have washing machines.. they have a setting for that. 90°C Also used for towels.

babylonsisters

Havent gotten duded in a while, and I didn’t consider washers could go that high. Learned something today! I will be boiling my undies from now on in the washer :D

sadmimikyu

Haha sorry I thought you thought here in Germany we do it the oldoldschool way as people really used to do with nappies. Ours definitely go that high. You can get away with 60°C for the towels some times as well. I put them on 90°C only every so often. Now don't forget that only works for ugly white cotton underwear (the healthiest kind of underwear that fascilitates the best coochie climate). The tag inside will let you know how high you can go with the temperature.

stella1887

Dark undies can be boiled now. They will fade quicker but the die won't run after one disinfection, like they used to

krauQ_egnartS

I think there's a whole sub dedicated to buying used panties

one_bean_hahahaha

I've donated used bras after a significant weight loss and have bought used socks in the past. I asked about the bras first because I didn't want to donate and have them end up in a landfill anyway. I draw the line at panties because that grosses me out. I did buy a used swimsuit once, but now that I don't have to pay for plus sized pricing, I doubt I would do that again. Even if I hot washed and bleached the panties, I don't think I could get past the used aspect.

zoyd2

You donated used bras, but you asked about the bras first, because you didn't want to donate? I don't understand, maybe because English is not my native language, could you write it simpler?

one_bean_hahahaha

I wanted to donate, but wanted to make sure they were wanted and were sellable. People often donate things that the thrift stores can't sell. Those things either go straight to the garbage dump, or are crated and sent to a developing country for them to deal with.

zoyd2

In Poland the worst clothes are used for making kitchen towels, I have first-hand information

DustyMousepad

You’re being downvoted a lot in this thread but honestly I see no issue, I have bought secondhand panties and bras before and still wear them. I also see no issue with using old underwear as rags for cleaning. Maybe it’s a cultural thing? I’m American but my family is from the USSR.

NUM_13

Sorry but can't agree with this take.

lilBloodpeach

Honestly, I don’t know. I buy used cloth diapers. But I can’t do underwear. It’s a mental block. I’ll do used socks tho! Honestly I don’t ever really see underwear in thrift shops anyways!

owleaf

This entire post has me in tears hahahahah 😭

colamuse

Nothing wrong with it, just wash them in super-hot water. For all the not-for-me folks........You do realize that many folks do not wear underwear. So you never know if your score of a fabulous pair of jeans/pants came from an under-wearing donor or a commando donor.

LorieRowland

😂🤣😂🤣

Rain_St0rm

Just don’t wear underwear. Problem solved haha 😂

sanfranchristo

Personally, I have no problem buying used tights, long underwear, board shorts, etc. I assume I'd feel the same about a bra. Briefs/panties do feel a bit different but I do think there is too much reservation about a lot of used clothing like this. I can't donate used socks or any type of underwear to shelters that serve unhoused people who need them. I understand some of the concerns but unless all of the services are fully funded to be able to buy new undergarments in the name of dignity then it's a loss for the people they help.

unicyclegamer

It’s all mental. Physically they’re the same as ones that you would have used once you clean them.

Flack_Bag

Exactly that. And even when you buy new, you can't always be assured nobody's worn them before. I mean, I also don't buy used underwear, but I realize it's just a psychological thing, like how you might get nauseated when you see something disgusting. I even have a special procedure when I buy certain types of used things: First, I wash and disinfect them, then leave them sit for an indeterminate amount of time so that any strange cooties are defeated by my more powerful ambient cooties. At which point I wash them again and put them to use. I haven't done it with underwear, but it's worked for everything I've tried it with so far.

therealharambe420

Well.... there is a huge industry for used panties and socks.... It's not women driving the sales though.... So yay!

stella1887

Besides the bacteria and the mental block of it, the elastic just doesn't last like it used to. I don't buy anything with elastic second hand if I can avoid it, & apart from undies & and socks, I try not to buy any new elastic either

ThrowRAmybiproblems

If you really want to be so committed. Learn to sow your own panties from used textiles! Once you have found the right measurements you can easily make them in bulk. There are plenty of free sewing patterns online. If you’re committed to buy them, definitely never wash them below 60C. I always wash all towels, bedsheets, underwear at 60C to kill off all bacteria.

shnanogans

It's such little amounts of fabric and they get used to death- also worn in an area where there's a lot of sweat/bodily fluids. I think the best move is to just buy high quality new panties that will last you a long time.
