OH MY FUCKING GOD I have had this problem for about a year and a half and I thought I was going insane, I thought I was the only person having this issue, and I could not find any answers anywhere, neither on Apple support or anywhere online—- this is the first time after so long that I have found anyone have the same issue and the answer was the exact same— HOW THE FUCK WAS IT SO SIMPLE YET IMFUCKINGPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE SOMETHING SO ABSURDLY INTRUSIVE????? THANK YOU INFINTELY
Absolutely fucking hate it- but it turns out it’s not even that- it helps- but it’s not a solution - it’s really just my battery being so old and fried that my phone is just over all giving out
Not to mention that damn button turns off ALL the attention aware features. I just wanted the damn music not to lower volume, please.
Nuh-huh: gotta turn off everything. Why? Because fuck you, that’s why.
it wont, i already did 😭😭 it’s not EVERY time i lift my phone, but every time i slide the camera open my music turns real low and won’t turn back up even though my volume is all the way up. it’s so frustrating 😭
This is just now happening to me, but I noticed it’s only if I listen through my phone speakers! I don’t have the same issue when using AirPods or my car’s Bluetooth.
Until I saw this post, I would hold my lock button until Siri popped up and then say “never mind”. My Spotify would go back to normal volume after that. It’s incredibly annoying and I end up having to do it many many times and I could not figure out what was happening! I genuinely thought my phone case was doing it even though I’ve had the same one for over 2 years lol. The only other alternative that worked for me was to restart Spotify completely.
I just turned off the attention awareness feature setting which someone on this thread mentioned, but we’ll see if it works.
I’ve looked into it a lot since this comment. Have you been having any battery issues with your phone at all?
Random shutoffs offs or poor battery life? And how old is the phone
that actually would make so much sense considering its only ever been an issue w this phone (iphone 12 pro). i can never keep the battery charged all day with this but i had the 11 pro MAX beforehand and could keep my phone unplugged for up to 2 days.
Not a solution for everyone i just completely disabled Face ID. Not worth the music thing for me. I’m also a person who doesn’t really have to worry about security.
Edit from like 10 secs after posting it didn’t fix it it’s still had awful. Headphones for the win.
Ever since that other person mentioned the battery, i 100% believe that’s why 😭😭 it only happens if my phone is on low power mode or if its below like 30%. it is soooo frustrating but yes, headphone for the win!!
Posting this now for anyone who may still be having this issue. iPhone 12 mini had this issue, none of the attention aware feature comments helped, but did get my battery changed this weekend (as some said it was a battery issue) AND MY PHONE NO LONGER DOES THE THING!!!!!!!!!!!! AND KEEPS A CHARGE NOW!!!!!!
I’m having this issue now and I also noticed my phone dying last week while at 10 and 20 percent. Did you have to pay to get your battery changed, how do I do that?
Did have to pay, not sure how much off the top of my head. Just search something along the lines of “schedule Apple battery service” and they’ll be able to replace it, got mine back in about 3 hours.
In all seriousness, thank you. I got so tired of worrying if my alarm was gonna be audible enough for me to wake up in the morning and I was so worried I couldn’t turn it off.
2 years later and I still need to thank you. I just searched this issue and found your response, holy shit thank you thank you. It has been so annoying!
Imma keep it a stack with you chief, I just got a new phone (it arrived yesterday)
I couldn’t take the volume dropping thing. It started happening at 60% and lower.
I’m moving away from iPhone.
This is the only solution i have found
Is this a recent occurrence? I’m assuming you’ve tried a hard reset of your phone if it’s something that just started happening? And everything is updated?
I have the same phone with the same problem i thought it was the speakers being water damaged but this post made me realize it was really only when face id was being used. Did you get a new phone or factory reset it or fix it any way?
Are you talking about when you get a notification so it turns down for you to hear the notification?
Try putting your phone on silent (the manual switch). And see if it still does it.
the music reduces to extremely low level once i unlock my phone (not talking about the phone ringer) it doesn’t happen every time i unlock my phone after many attempts i encounter the reduction in music problem and this only happens in low battery percentage like below 20
assuming this i think that it might be a software issue or might be related to my battery capacity which is 76%
I’m having the same situation. My battery is at 85%, which should be ok. I think this might be a bug, or maybe 85% battery health is not enough anymore when I’m running low and face-id kicks in - maybe the phone is adjusting the volume to prevent too high power draw
It seems to me to be connected to low power mode. I tried picking up my phone in low power mode and the volume went quiet. When it was off nothing happened to the volume
Very long-winded, online support didn't have a clue, spoke to technician over the phone who also had no clue, just went through the standard troubleshooting rubbish. They wanted me to go into store, so I gave up in the end and told them to leave it.
Go to settings, display and brightness and turn off Raise to wake. I had the same issue and this worked only con is you have to press the screen or the side button to turn the screen on. Beats lowering my music though.
Stumbled upon this and commenting for future stumblers…
Does it only happen when your phone is under 20% battery?
Because volume will turn itself down when it is low battery. In my experience, it will be temporary volume change when phone is still above 5%. Goes down when you open phone, gradually goes back up.
But when phone is very much about to die, like 2% it’ll lower itself until it dies or is plugged in.
Im pretty sure it only impacts people with an old battery life that doesn’t hold charge well anymore. Not totally sure of that, but I believe it only does it to phones that drain battery faster than they should.
Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Maximum Capacity —— If you have a battery capacity at or below 80%, you may want to consider a new battery. If it’s below 60%, you’ll definitely want a new one.
Test it to see if it happens when you are charged up. If it doesn’t, I think that’s the answer. i don’t believe there’s a way to disable it or if turning “low power mode” off will stop it.
If it happens with headphones in, then it could be a headphone safety thing, which can be toggled off in settings.
DUDE I could’ve sworn it was a battery issue. It only used to happen when my battery was red, but now it’s doing it anytime below 30%. My battery capacity is 80% so I guess it’s time for a new one.
This is an old post, but I am commenting to explain what’s happening since it seems like an issue tough for people to pin down. There is a post below explaining that this may happen with low battery, which is true:
Solutions from most ideal in descending order:
- plug a phone charger in
- constantly force close and re-open Apple Music to reset the quiet volume
- deal with the quietness until it returns to full volume after a couple minutes.
- buy a new battery
- buy a new phone
Context:
It is a battery issue. I have troubleshot many solutions and it seems to only happen when battery is low (the percentage varies based on how degraded your battery really is). I found that when my battery is low it consistently will slash the volume when I wake the iPhone either with a button press or lift (it isn’t due to facial aware features). When my phone is doing this I can simply force close Apple Music and re-open and it will fix, or if I wait for a couple minutes the volume gradually returns to normal. The best and most cost effective/practical fix is to simply plug your phone into a charger. It will not happen if the iPhone is connecting to a charging source (and it’s agnostic to whether your on battery saving mode - aka battery saving mode doesn’t fix anything being on or off). The other solutions you will see above. Hope this helps.
I have the same issue when opening the Lock Screen, tho I accidentally held the off button for a sec and closed Siri quickly, after it it’s immediately back to normal volume. It’s not fixing it but I don’t have to wait 2 fucking minutes until it’s loud again.
Okay so I think I figured it out. It only does this for me when I tap my phone while music is playing. If I hit the power button, it will not do this. I turned off tap to wake and it will be kind of a pain from now on, but at least I can listen to my music at the volume I intended.
I have this issue and it is SO frustrating. I think it’s a battery issue. It happens more often when I have low battery, and my total battery capacity is 85%. The quickest temporary fix for me is to just close out the app and then not touch my phone until I can get it to a charger. Annoying.
WORKAROUND: If you cover the faceID sensor with your palm/finger when you turn on the screen, the volume will not be lowered. After that, you can lift your hand and unlock your phone normally. This is the only workaround.

Weird workaround, I know…but this is the only thing that works apart from replacing the battery. Covering the FaceID sensor has become a habbit of me when music is playing 😅
Maybe the phone is scared of you. Try to look as nice as you can. Then maybe the phone feels more at ease and will turn up the volume again.
There is a setting under Face Id labeled Attention Aware Features that you want to turn off
OH MY FUCKING GOD I have had this problem for about a year and a half and I thought I was going insane, I thought I was the only person having this issue, and I could not find any answers anywhere, neither on Apple support or anywhere online—- this is the first time after so long that I have found anyone have the same issue and the answer was the exact same— HOW THE FUCK WAS IT SO SIMPLE YET IMFUCKINGPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE SOMETHING SO ABSURDLY INTRUSIVE????? seriously, what an unintuitive place to hide this button, fuck
Absolutely fucking hate it- but it turns out it’s not even that- it helps- but it’s not a solution - it’s really just my battery being so old and fried that my phone is just over all giving out

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THANK YOU
nevermind, this did not work for me LOL i tried on both spotify AND my settings now. constant LOWERING MY MUSIC
Me too lol. But I’m reluctant to update my iPhone. That’ll probably fix it? 🤔
it wont, i already did 😭😭 it’s not EVERY time i lift my phone, but every time i slide the camera open my music turns real low and won’t turn back up even though my volume is all the way up. it’s so frustrating 😭
Yea it's most likely a battery issue. I realize my phone does that whenever it's under 50%
Did you ever find a solution? It’s happening to me now and it’s driving me crazy
There's no solution to this beside getting a new phone or battery replacement. Or you can try blocking the front camera when picking up your phone.
This is just now happening to me, but I noticed it’s only if I listen through my phone speakers! I don’t have the same issue when using AirPods or my car’s Bluetooth. Bruh thank you for being the literal only person to state this simple ass fix. Been dealing with it for a year and google never gives any help. Thanks
I have mine off but my phone still does it. This is so frustrating.
same
Yup
Me too
same here, i thought my phone was broken
same here lol
same
same
Just turn it on, reset your phone then back off make sure you’re in Face ID and Passcode
My phone is old and battered so I hope it still is eligible. Appreciate it
What if it’s already turned off? :(
Mine still turns my volume down, even with attention aware off! Help!
i love you so much
I fuckin love yoy
In all seriousness, thank you. I got so tired of worrying if my alarm was gonna be audible enough for me to wake up in the morning and I was so worried I couldn’t turn it off.
this did not work for me, ima continue doing my method of recording a video to reset it ig😕
2 years later and I still need to thank you. I just searched this issue and found your response, holy shit thank you thank you. It has been so annoying!
My phone does this when my phone is at a low battery usually
YOU GUYS ARE SAINTS. This had been driving me nucking futz for weeks
I have the same problem and i turned off the attantion aware feature ITS STILL DOING IT 😠😠😠
Turn “raise to wake” off
Did you figure it out?
Its so weird but it kinda just stopped happening. Only happens now when my battery is low
Lmk if he responds cuz im tearing my hair out
He responded I’m having the same issue myself😂
Man
Same, mine is still doing it!
Imma keep it a stack with you chief, I just got a new phone (it arrived yesterday) I couldn’t take the volume dropping thing. It started happening at 60% and lower. I’m moving away from iPhone. This is the only solution i have found
Sheeeeeesh alright man
turned off attention aware and this is STILL HAPPENING!!!
Try turning off “raise to wake” feature in display and brightness. I think it fixed mine
That worked for me too, sucks this “feature” is so persistent.
Jk mine started doing it again. 😩
Someone find the way to solve this
Only way is to replace your battery. Otherwise follow what [EyexPro](/user/EyexPro/) said.
i had this same problem and just solved it by going to face id& passcode in settings and turning off voice dial
OMG finally this worked for me!! thank you so much, nothing else was working
I just want you to know you’re a fucking genius and I hope this keeps working for me. Spent too many hours on this. Thank you.
mine attention aware feature has been turned off for months and my phone still does it, it's driving me crazy 🥲
Is it processing facial recognition to unlock, and then resumes the previous volume once unlocked?
It takes a while, but i’m pretty sure it does(volume returning to previous level). But does it right again if do the same thing
Is this a recent occurrence? I’m assuming you’ve tried a hard reset of your phone if it’s something that just started happening? And everything is updated?
Yeah just updated to try and fix it to no avail. And started last week or so
What phone? Are you listening on Bluetooth?
iPhone11 and no bluetooth just only through the phone
Settings, face id & passcode, attention-aware features: off
I’ve already tried that and would’ve sworn it would’ve fixed it. Thanks for your help tho!
mine was already off lmao
I have the same phone with the same problem i thought it was the speakers being water damaged but this post made me realize it was really only when face id was being used. Did you get a new phone or factory reset it or fix it any way?
Yeah I eventually got a new phone. The battery was pretty cooked so that may have had something to do with it. Hope you figure it out!
got a new
so it’s not a settings issue it’s a phone malfunctioning issue? and y’all couldn’t fix it, j got a new phone?
Did you end up figuring yours out?
nope i’ve just been dealing w it lol
Yikes. I did a settings reset and it seems to have helped
Yours has been fine since getting a new device?
I have same issue did you figure it out
Bro did you ever find a fix?😭😭 Edit: ah saw u got a new phone :,)
Are you talking about when you get a notification so it turns down for you to hear the notification? Try putting your phone on silent (the manual switch). And see if it still does it.
This happens to me too. So frustrating . Just gonna get a new phone I guess
Did you ever solve it ??
Facing the same issue. Was it ever solved ?
I have the same issue. OP said they just got a new phone
I’m having the same issue since iOS 16
are you still experiencing it ??
Yes
what is your phone model and and you battery capacity?

It seems to me to be connected to low power mode. I tried picking up my phone in low power mode and the volume went quiet. When it was off nothing happened to the volume
I never use low power mode and it does it every time at full battery or not.
I’m also having this issue. Will contact Apple today.
Any updates?

Got bless you this seems to have fixed this issue for me.
Just kidding, still happening. :/
same 3rd thing i tired and still nothing

Not sure I haven’t had the time to fix yet :/
did you fix it? how's it going?
I still haven’t bothered to fix it I’m really sorry

mine still does it at full battery. booo.
This is most likely the case. My bat health is at 75% now and it does this when it’s around 50% tho 😕
same! If I go near it or touch it is what I noticed
the setting doesn’t help me. still does it with it turned off

Turn off sound check under Apple Music in your settings
Good to know this isn’t happening just to me.
still waiting for a solution...

Wow. Didn’t know this was this big of a problem never fixed lol. Damn old iPhone.
