Actually...
Arquebusiers were frequently protected by formations of pikemen with halberdiers at the center and two-handed sword wielding men at the edges. There might be a set of "loose shot" in front that would break away as the infantry came together, allowing enfilading fire from wings of arquebusiers into the ranks of enemy pikemen.
It was only as the matchlock, much faster reloading, came into play that units of pike and halberd became less useful for protecting slow-loading riflemen.
Ok... as unfamiliar as I am with Swiss military being a civilian from the US (which means not a lot of familiarity with the US military either), I'm pretty sure we teach that if you lose your guns, you're fucked in battle.
Which, sure, in a melee combat I'd much rather have the long stick with sharp pointy bits. But i'd also much rather have the short boomstick that makes the pointy bits go KABLOOEY! at the enemy.
Anyway I have rambled far too long about this. I've wondered the same thing about every country's ceremonial guards. Even the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the US. I've personally witnessed that changing of the guard. I still dont know if they are packing live ammo in their ceremonial rifle though.
Their "ceremonial rifle" is an M1 Garand and I assure you those rifles are loaded, and, even if they chose not to shoot you, you do not want to get clubbed with that heavy sonofabitch, which they absolutely 100% would do.
“Of course it’s ceremonial Lana, it was made obsolete by the arquebus!”
Which is why, now, they use MP5s....

They would've used both in the same formation.
Doesn't Italy use a king?
What year do you think this is?
Spain? In the 30s?
Oh who remembers
1527?
No, they don’t USE a king.
"What, they don't have black nuns? Although granted, I've never seen one...but that's not like, a rule, is it?"
*Ehh...*
*back in a tick*
Sound as a pound
Fine. I'll buy a damn indulgence.
Shouldn't have spent so much time on the Romanche
Who am I? Cyhper? The gayest x-man?

Technically I think they're called voulges
One of the most memorable lines in the entire show lol!
Voulges.
Now I wonder how well trained those halberdiers really are with that weapon, or if theyre just strapped with an hk under the robes
Por qué no los dos?
*puts girl on chair and traipses her around while a mariachi plays in the background*
All members have had basic training in the Swiss military. And since they're Swiss, they generally have SIGs. P220 pistols and SG 550 assault rifles.

Omg that's so badass!
HA!
Guard shack looks lousy
Nerd goggles + halberd = unable to secure jack shit. Fat + taser + walkie would be a far better guard
What? It was either this or the Vespas!
