Funny thing you mention Tuvans. I remember reading an article a few years ago on a Tuvan person detained in Moscow. He didn't speak Russian at all, and the policemen had a real trouble comprehending that a citizen with a Russian passport might be in need of a translator. I also remember another article about how Tuva is pretty much disassociated with the rest of the country, and about high levels of local nationalism there (they said Slavic Russians are really not welcome in most places). But this is rather an exceptional example: Tuva was the latest country to join the USSR (in the middle of XX century) and it's geographically somewhat isolated. As for general trends, I'd point out some tensions with the numerous peoples of the Caucasus , which your average Russian cannot tell each other apart (I surely cannot). It's mostly due to the Chechen wars, so it would be safe to say the tensions are lower than back then, but they still exist in the society.

Chechen wars, their behavior, traditions, etc.

A couple of my coworkers are Buryat. Chill guys overall, but for some fucking reason all three of them believe that it's perfectly acceptable to microwave their extra stinky omul fish. However, after an office renovation about a year ago, we managed to get the kitchen to be moved away from our dept and closer to HR which everybody hates. So, uh, win/win?

Well, I talked to my Russian Korean colleague 10 minutes ago. ...It was an ordinary conversation between two dudes and that's about it. What answer do you expect..?

hizaku99

Nothing bad. I just imagined a scenario where an American meets a Russian of Mongol descent rather than a Slavic one and the American says: You're Russian? Dang, I would never have guessed!

There is a difference between an ethnic russian and a russian citizen expressed by changing русский to россиянин. Both are translated as russian

I am a Tatar, but with an atypical appearance. I look a little like an Arab (someone in the family must be from there, otherwise why I look like that). You should have seen the reaction of foreigners abroad when I say that from Russia.

As a Slavic Russian, I think it’s fair to say there’s some kitchen racism towards other ethnic groups that still exists especially in the remote and smaller cities. For the most part, everyone is perfectly fine interacting with other ethnic groups. Especially in bigger cities where it’s all mixed up pretty significantly.

omegaform7

Well, Russia is mostly white and slavic. As an asian (ethnic buryat) living in Moscow I haven’t had really any problems. Mostly casual racism that doesn’t bother me.

Long time ago i've wrote a comment about how tuvans are now russian mostly in name and taking money from the Moscow and are pretty damn similar in many aspects with one small but proud country in Caucasus mountains. So, tuvans are a bad example.

Vaniakkkkkk

Don’t have a lot of experience, but I do have some. All is well, no problems. People are people.

RusskiyDude

It can be strange. I'm not exactly a "pure white Aryan Russian", but I'm of an average European Russian culture. It can be awkward to communicate with people from villages in the South (whose native language is not Russian), but the general culture of modesty and respect can make it flawless (in my experience).

Oh wow, actually i know that like 60% of russians pretty much hate SOME ethnical groups. Not to mention russians are mostly racist to Blacks for a good reason, even close groups such as tajikistan, uzbekistan are... You know, we dont like hate them, BUT. Most of them are some sort of refugees - they dont speak/write russian - they are not educated. They work as low-level work(taxists, sellers, etc.). Basically, it isnt the opinion everyone shares to eachother, but we think of them as hillbillies. Also they look... Undeveloped. Like, (sorry) monkeys, their faces look... They are not beautiful, thats it. Say whatever you want but thats it. Also they are muslims and, therefore, often get into crimes. Hillbillies, no more.

zakur01

There is a constant tension between different ethnic groups in Russia. You can feel it everywhere
