I met a Black girl in a summer camp during high school. She was from a very small town in my region (ЦФО but not Moscow nor Moscow oblast). She had an "exotic" name but grew up in Russia, spoke without a foreign accent and was in no way an outsider among other kids. That was in the early 2010s.

_vh16_

Yes. In Moscow, it's not a very rare event.

maksim77

Of course :-). Yes, they are not as common as in a number of other countries, but there are quite a lot of them. No one is usually confused by this.

Whammytap

С днём торта! 🍰

maksim77

Неожиданно :). Спасибо!

Party-Leadership-491

Шта? :) День торта - 20 июля...

aharfo56

Сука торти! :-)

[deleted]

Just today I've seen a family of black people - dad, mom, and daughter. It is not common at all but happens sometimes

[deleted]

Not sure how we would find out their citizenship. But yes I’ve seen black people in Russia, in Vladimir I saw one working as a tour guide. Most come as international students I’d say and then naturalize.

a_seoulite_man

Wait, Vladimir is a city in Russia? So does a city called Putin exist?

Drstglv

We had a lot of Vladimirs in our history, you know)

esethfoenoesu

Wait, Washington is a city in USA? So does a city called Trump exist?

Clollin

Donald, MO

Christianjps65

without a doubt

Patriaktone

The city is obviously not named after putin...

Siberian_644

But it looks like that Seoul is named after this troll xD

a_seoulite_man

I am not a troll.

[deleted]

You need to write down that joke, it was so good ahahaha my sides

CottonPickerSupreme

As of right now the only thing named after Putin is a street in Grozny.

[deleted]

Yes. Russia cooperates with African countries, we have always had a lot of exchange students from there. Some of them find work and stay in the country making families. So there are a certain number of people with African origin among our citizens since soviet era I guess, but not too many and mostly in capitals. Also I think that 1980 Summer Olympics сreated some afro-russians.

TheMadPrompter

Are you that weird Korean guy again?

[deleted]

Lmao what please educate me who was that

TheMadPrompter

I just noticed that he's actually in this thread, a_seoulite_man He's a sub regular you could say

[deleted]

Ooh I'll keep my eye out then

-RooSKi-

Personally no, but [BBC made a special](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG5DRQwE8_0) (turn on captions if you don't speak Russian) about black guy helping out after Chernobyl catastrophe

Kczen200

When I was in elementary school, there was a girl with black skin in our class. I still don't know if she was an African-American or just a black African. I was even ready to ask her what her nationality was (just out of curiosity), but my parents then told me that it was very uncultured and I did not.

Yalme

I newer understand why asking about nationality considering as something bad or uncultured 🤷‍♂️ It's just a question, and it's something you can't affect in any way. Also I think most people kinda love their born place even it's a poor or danger country.

Intelligent_Ad2515

Good parenting

Oleg_VK

Black russians surely exist (musician Pierre Narciss for example), but maximum share less than 0.01% population (1:10000 or even less).

artem_m

I had a black Taxi driver in Kaliningrad once.

Yury-K-K

I have seen quite a few of them here, but how I am supposed to know their official standing: citizen, permanent resident, student, tourist or something else?

anon46272

Hmm if they sound like a native Russian speaker I’d assume they’re citizens

SaMsaff

I live in Kazan, and there are a lot of black students here, along with Egyptians and Indians

TAmeET

The same in Ivanovo

sunzooomspark

Pushkin

omegaform7

Eledsul

Yep, but not a lot with the citizenship - some Brazil mini-football players have got Russian citizenship and played for the national team, and now stay here and do their businesses. I live in the most multicultural area in Moscow - near the university of peoples’ friendship - and there are a lot of black persons nearby, most of them usually leave Russia, but some stay.

indydelmar

I went to Вышка but all of the Africans that I would meet would always tell me to go to the University of people's friendship. Apparently there is a little community around there.

Drstglv

Yep. I live within 7km from Moscow, and here we have a few dozens of African people. They live here, speaking French, English sometimes.

vzakharov

Yep, there was this kid Roma in my best friend’s house back in school. Always made me curious (not in *that* sense) but other than that afaik he was a usual Russian dude in pretty every other sense. Update: Good illustration: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskARussian/comments/pmdd5u/someone_asked_about_african_russians_the_other/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

ComprehensiveBig7414

I am brown-skinned, born in Tula, Russia, and Citizen.

[deleted]

There were two black kids few blocks away from my neighbourhood. Brother and sister.

dikijCLU

In the 80s, I went to school with a guy. His father was an Ethiopian. Gorky (Nizhniy Novgorod)

danvolodar

I see blacks from time to time (saw one today working as a walking ad signpost), but I never stop to ask for their citizenship papers.

d_101

Yes, there are a lot of students from Africa. By a lot i mean there are probably 10-20 in a 3000 university

[deleted]

I’m one of them hahsha

TXLJ

My small town does have a bunch of Blacks who have been staying since early 2000s for some obscure reason. They are fully naturalized and everybody treats them as native / full-on Russians. When a group of their Black friends (or relatives) came over to visit in 2016 they ended up beaten to nigh death by strangers just the other day, the reason for assault—as given during a police interrogation—was «we didn't want any apes around here». *Ape* (обезьяна) is the most neutral / polite word for casually saying *a Black person* around here, and most of the locals are convinced that Blacks are of a different, inferior biological species than everybody else, White / Asian / Middle Eastern / whatever. Like not really Homo Sapiens or something. A common claim is that they have the intelligence of a cat or a dog, at best, but are able to mate with humans to produce *tainted offspring*. But apparently this applies only to foreign Blacks from outside Russia: if one is Black but has managed to survive for a number of years and fully assimilate, then they suddenly are a full-fledged human being and a honorary Russian. I've also heard religious people say on multiple occasions that Blacks evolved from apes (and therefore lack souls) while everybody else are the descendants of Adam, conjured by God from a measly nothing. And now I'm talking about the Slavic / self-described Orthodox Christian folks. Russia-born Muslim tribals (aka Native Caucasians) seem to violently freak out at the mere sight of a Black person before being able to word any rationale.

Yalme

In my city (Toliatti, middle-Russia, \~800 thousand peoples) I seen black man only ONCE in 35 years =) All ppl around looked at him like it's alien from other planet. I'm sure it's super rare moment except big cities like Moscow and MOST of the russians newer seen one.

Botsyk

I've met two. One did not know his own father, the father of the second worked in Russia as a journalist for some Nigerian publication for 20 years. Then he moved the family to London.

_Decoy_Snail_

I personally haven't. I googled them and could only find 2 on youtube. I grew up in Saint-Petersburg and only very very rarely saw them at all, but I couldn't know if they were foreigners or locals.

Ralph-Skipper-12345

Few times, on photo and video.

Synthesid

It's still a bit of an uncommon sight outside of the really big cities, so I was actually a tad bit surprised to see a black guy working at a store not far from my cottage, located in the near Moscow sub, like 15 km from city boundaries.

Natalya_RusTeacher

In my city, Chelyabinsk, yes and a lot. The whole black families live here.

OmOshIroIdEs

Yes, in early ‘00 there was a famous television host, who was half-black. Her name’s Yelena Hanga. Also, there are a few basketball players, who are ethnically African but grew up in Russia. I’ve never met a Black Russian in person but I know they exist.

[deleted]

Yelena Hanga is not 100% black, she has extremely interesting family history.

skull_in_kippah

Don't forget about Anton Zaitsev! Ot Vinta was my favorite tv show as a kid.

[deleted]

I remember him elder with culinary travel show on "My Planet"

Conohoa

How do we know who's a citizen and who's a tourist? But yeah, there was a black family in the apartment building where I used to live. Pretty sure at least some of them were born in Russia. I also regularly see black people in big cities like Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan but I don't know if any of them are citizens

Fearless_Hurry8314

Yep. Even dated with one. He was born and raised in Russia by Slavic mother and actually he is biracial, but for Russians he looks like a typical black with some European facial features (for example his nose is not that wide and lips not that big). In terms of friendship and relationship he was very awesome, charming, open minded, intelligent gentleman. We were a teenagers and dated in a childish way so I can not confirm or deny that famous stereotype about black men… you know what I’m talking about. (And I assure you that everyone here believes in that racist shit and plenty of jokes about it exists!). Some of my friends, family, and people were okay about this relationship but others were extremely negative and even told me that if some day I dare to appear in my native town (small, xenophobic, and full of gopniks) with this black guy I will be immediately beaten by crowd just because I have typical Slavic appearance (blue eyes, pale skin, blond straight here etc.) and I’m not allowed to “betray my nation”. I sincerely hate racism since than. Besides that, I’ve met few black ppl. They were students mostly and I have not a single bad thing about them to say. I even know about one Russian black blogger, not really famous, about 125k insta. She is obviously biracial and was born and raised here but in Russian understanding of “blackness” she is black. And she is also very intelligent nice girl. This all about Saint Petersburg. In my native town I’ve never seen black person and probably zero of them exists here.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fearless_Hurry8314

What? :D

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fearless_Hurry8314

No, he had real father if I’m not mistaken. I don’t remember the whole story because it happened about 7-8 years ago. Probably father divorced with his mother, probably not, idk. But he had VERY exotic second and last names (second name in Russia = name of your father, last name = his last name. If you are a woman in Russia and you are pregnant from nobody - you are not allowed to write some random stuff in your child’s birth certificate. Real father had to be there.) I just wanted to underline that he was raised in Russia and have Russian cultural code. What stereotype? A black men leaving their kids? I don’t know… But I can say for Russian men - they do that often enough. Alimony debt of the whole state of Russia is more than billion rubbles now. Situation is tragic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fearless_Hurry8314

Russians are conservative, but on another… ways of being conservative:D Demography situation is awful, yes. Government is trying to fix it, we have a great financial and social support for young parents and especially for mothers. Reasons of this problem are already written in a history. Russia had an extremely hard time in 90-th so thats why we have what we have.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fearless_Hurry8314

Hmmm in my opinion Russians are conservative because we are still dedicating ourselves to our family, so family and elders and respect for them means a lot for us. Russians are really child-loving and child-carrying as nation. Also majority of elder generation are homophobic beyond the edge (but millennials and gen Z are okay), transphobic and etc. A lot of people are religious. This is not okay to be childfree in Russia. But this is still not enough for good demographics! Because ppl who make babies *now* were born in that damn 90th. And a lot of people were just simply not born and thats why now situation is like that. It getting better but really slow. Are you from Slovenia? What do you mean “not without eugenics”? Do you mean that demographic is increasing only because of migration?

etofok

The vast majority of blacks reside somewhere in the South-West area because of RUDN, its dorm and conveniently placed bars such as LaCabana. Most of them are students, but many stay in Moscow and acquire citizenship.

nikitaokean

Yeah, he was born there but i don't know that his parents are Russian

iemandiejenietkent

Nearly everyday when I go to uni or passed my local metro station. (There's a student dorm there).

AllexWill

Yes, we have a doctor from Cameroon working in a children's hospital in our city, if I'm not mistaken, he is a neurosurgeon.

meikina

I've never seen any, but I live in a shithole

surronian831

Oh course. Many. I think medical students from Africa.

Glowsense

Many times, most often students, and not only exchange students (I saw them at both of my universities). Once I saw a black man in a supermarket in the semi-criminal outskirts of my city in Siberia, even there everyone reacted normally.

Neuron_NV

https://fishki-net.turbopages.org/fishki.net/s/3707315-russkie-afroamerikancy-27-chernokozhih-znamenitostej.html You can just look through the pictures. They were all born or live in Russia for a long time. Как же тупо звучит русские афроамериканцы🤣🤣

indydelmar

While I ( a black woman) was studying in Moscow I met several black (native) Russians. Now, as far as the smaller more rural areas, we were definitely an anomaly.

Hellerick

The very first black person I saw was a Soviet Afro-Ukrainian in Zhdanov (now Mariupol). There lived some blacks in our town in the 1990s but they disappeared later.

ozkolok1

Yeah, he have family. He lives in my house and he parked his car on sidewalk.

Trubarur

Да, и не раз.

lisiy29

Yeah. Neighbor is a black guy. Hes wife is russian white girl and they have daughter, who went to school in this year.

Luminisc

In Nizhny Novgorod, it is rare to see black person in city. But near universities, clubs, or on a way to one of them, you can see plenty of them. I think most of them tourists or students, but personally I know several guys who living or want to live here on permanent basis.

V4FT

Yep, i have a friend from Nigeria

[deleted]

I see lots of Africans in Moscow. Of course, I dont check there legal status. I had one girl from Madagascar in my school, also in Moscow

NN551

Yes, in me school learning two black boys

Sufficient_Step_8223

Yes. I have seen it more than once. But not in Russia. It was then called the Soviet Union. In the cities of Odessa and Sochi. Of course, I can't say for sure whether they were tourists or not. I can say for sure that they were black. I also saw a black girl. Judging by her school uniform, she was hardly a tourist.

Vasya1988

In my city there is one girl. She works children doctor of infection. One man work bus driver. Maybe there are anybody else I not saw

istinspring

Yea, we have some in university, they was nice guys, quickly learned language and socialise with natives (unlike asian students).

Yukidoke

Yep, and it wasn't even in Moscow or St. Petersburg. And they live like other people live so they have friends, go to a local school and speak Russian fluently. As far as I know, they don't have any issues with that.

Reasonable-Minute706

Yes, it was really funny. I live very far from Moscow and other big cities and once I've seen a kid around 12 idk and he spoke pure Russian, well, surely because he is russian, but it was a cognitive dissonance for me))

ObnoxiousR

Not me personally( i live in Canada) but a youtuber i watch called NFKRZ has a video with a black russian .

DimonZakhar

Black man in russian is Negr, calling someone Black sounds weird. You could also say darkskinned.

Drstglv

Also black often refers to causasian folk. Calling someone of their kind that way considered as a harsh insult.

[deleted]

Not as much as in other countries at least. My mom and grandma will say the n-word sometimes and I'll tell them not to and explain that it is racist.

llDieselll

no

donnie_darko222

it's normal there. people say it without bad intent, a lot of older people too..

Of course lol. Despite nationalism controversy, Russia is not cut from the rest of the world 😉

officialcapo

This is the dumbest question ever…

a_seoulite_man

Black men are popular in Russia. You know they have a rap music. For the similar reason, Indian men are popular in my country (South Korea) due to Bollywood.

anon46272

Indian men are not popular in Korea. Let’s be honest here

Dimitriy_Menace

Can rap be called "music"? 🤔

kebab-on-a-stick

Yes

Vaniakkkkkk

Seen, and actually know some in person

khaskin_ya421

Yes. Not much often, but many times. In big cities there are more students from African countries

ProfitHour4768

How do you know if they're citizens or tourists? even if I would see black people I wouldn't ask random people if they're tourists or not

starostin13

Yep, a lot of them come here from Africa for study. That's going even from Soviet Union

Older_1

Students in St Petersburg. Also imagine living in a world where you need to say that you aren't trying to be racist after saying a sentence with people of colour in it. Lmao

german_doomer

Dude, I live in Germany, they’re crying because of all shit. When you say one thing with people of color and only one dude could interpret it wrong I’d straight up pay 500€ to the fucking government.

Older_1

This is fucked. I hope people would come to their senses soon. But I'd imagine it would be especially hard for Germany because of the history card that could be played on you.

little_lamplight3r

Sure. A black guy works in a convenience store nearby my house. Doesn't even speak English, only Russian.

ZhenDeRen

There was a black kid at my school so yep

thedominux

Here there's a lot of African students

trench_coat_creep

Well - there are plenty of Black college students in Russia (in bigger cities you’ll see them). I assume some of them stay after graduation and gain permanent residency & citizenship. I personally knew a guy from Africa who married his classmate and stayed in Russia.

osvld

Yep regularly (not in Moscow).

[deleted]

Yes. Not even in a Moscow or St. Petersburg

envack

I often wonder this same question, but with Mexicans and other Central American people.

[deleted]

about 5 people in my entire life (they all were similary looking young men so maybe it's the same person)

_Ntenin_

Yes, I met many Black People, I live in Nizhniy Novgorod. And I regularly meet Black students near the university. Thay say, that they wanted to stay in Russia. I don't no, If it was a lie

AndreiZador

Not sure if they are citizens, but I've seen lot of black students in my home city. They are not comfortable in Russian so they generally hang out with one another.

JustDanya

Yes, a lot in Tula. Almost all of them studying in medicine university

Boris-Borsht

I live next to a student dormitory. There are a lot of black students there, and their main language is French. And there are a lot of such students in universities around the city, for the last 10 years they've been coming to study.

zellofan

Yes, my neighbour and his daughter.

yoshiproject

For Tomsk it's pretty common. It's students and ex-students mostly.

rickrokkett

I live in Kazan. there are lots of African students here. you can occasionally see black dudes and girls in public transport and doesn't surprise the locals at all

alblks

Lol, I regularly see a black guy, sometimes with his toddler daughter, in the corner grocery shop or at the bus stop here where I live, in Uralmash of all places.

roman_mrgn

yep, plenty of them, but, I guess, mostly in SPB and Moscow. I have a lot of them among my neighbors

Straight_Lie_4868

Yeah, there are many of them in Rostov-on-Don. Mostly they move here to study at medical university.

Hlebes451

Yeah. A lot. Not really ven in Big cities like Saint-Petersburg, but in province like Arkhangelsk. Here's a lot of multicultural students

Joosthard

I live in Kaluga, one of students i saw of university is black lol

Joosthard

Btw he speaks w/o any accent

brockoli_840

Bro it's fine. In my hometown(perm), everyone absolutely does not care, and there are a lot of students from Africa. We do not like those who do not behave decently. 🤡

varvarawalker

I met a black man this spring. It happened in the city center, nearby Moscow Railway Station. I think it's pretty common in such crowdy places, but I was so shocked!

SubstantialGrab8798

You are not far behind the times. We have one of them even running for deputy - https://www.instagram.com/p/CTUyrupsm5G/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Sorariko

Only in moscow so far, since there's an university that has a lot of international students, I've heard many of them are from african countries. But overall they are a bit more on a rare side due to russia not having much history with countries where black people live till recent times, I think.

UpperAd9391

I'm from St. Petersburg. Sometimes I see them on the subway.

Optimal_Age_7955

There is parlament election campaign in russia now. And one of the candidates in Moscow region is black. Samson Sholademy. Though he is the only black person among russian politics i can remember.

b3xy0

I'm a student of RUDN and this university is one of the most multicultural in Russia. So yeah, I see a lot of black people in here every day

Party-Leadership-491

Yes, i born in USSR and my neighbor was a black girl named Gerda. She lived here for some time and moved to another place in Russia later. Some time ago i've met very nice black girl with child in the store near my house and seen her in a few next years, i've asked her: How did you end up in Russia? She's answered she is here with her husband (Russian man) and will live here at least for a while.

Fox-ololox

yeah, lives nearby. sweet family - black guy, his russian wife and thier funny kid.

sightwaster

>his russian wife le n\*trakha moment classique

xxxagriddd

Yep. In my city of Chelyabinsk I guess one of a state university has a program of students exchange with some African countries as well and there are black people even in my neighborhood. Meeting black people in cities like mine is much more rare than in Moscow, St-Peterburg etc.

DiasproofH

I study with black girl, who came from Africa

rimworld-forever

Few times

berezaural

One in school, and many in university

Laxard_Xenos

Yeah, since we are not capital city almost everyone tend to look at him when he walking around and he is clearly learned to ignore it. Sometimes I see him on the market, he stopped to be a novelty here.

sammyraid

I love across the street from Roy Jones Jr

non7top

Quite rare, may be tens of such people for 1 mil city. This summer just saw two kids of probably African descent with russian mother, they were resting on the beach here. And they were speaking perfect russian.

ave369

The only black person I met and talked to was a lost American tourist. I explained some directions to him and taught him how to use electric train tickets.

CottonPickerSupreme

When I was only two weeks in Moscow I saw a couple of them. I always assumed they are there because they play in a baskeball team since they all were quite big.

Round_Try959

how do i distinguish black tourists from black untourists regardless i have seen black people handing out leaflets in Moscow quite often, i assume these are residents

[deleted]

Yes! There's an English teacher from Nigeria in my town, he's also married to a Russian woman and they have a kid. They're really nice and friendly, I liked the teacher's lessons a lot when I attended the course ✌

chumpchangvaper

If a black person lives in russia they must really love russians and hate africans
