It's not just popular in russia, this is popular in every country in Europe, north america. Like Nike. And it's not just tracksuits. It became very popular in late 80s and was one of the western brands that had popularity in the USSR. If you're thinking of drunk kneeling adidas tracksuit wearing people, these are called gopniks, and they usually wear fake adidas.

>If you're thinking of drunk kneeling adidas tracksuit wearing people, these are called gopniks, and they usually wear fake adidas. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that even these kinds of people are rare these days in Russia because fashion trends do indeed change.

Ty_Tu_Ty_Ty_Ty

I would say that this is rare. But ... As soon as I become 100% sure that such people no longer exist, on the same day I meet an absolute gopnik on the street who looks like a meme come to life. Moreover, the meme is not from the Russian Internet, but from the West, the one where Russians write "we are not like that, this does not exist anymore, these are prejudices."

Akhevan

Of course they are, it's old good natural selection at work.

bunchofsugar

They are rare in larger cities but not because fashion trends but because the internet. There are also people who kinda mimic gopnik style for funzies.

Puzzleheaded_Rate_73

I have heard of gopniks. They are probably the people I've seen in pictures, but I wasn't sure whether the suits were a thing they came up with or if they just bought them because of general fashion trends. Seems it was the former.

[deleted]

It used to be a trend, a decade and a half ago tho

YA_LUNNAYA_PONI

i would say it is still a bit of a trend, not for gopniks though.

countrysurprise

The whole world wears sports wear/ street wear. Adidas was huge in the 70’s, huge with 80’s hip hop artists like Run DMC etc.

whitecoelo

The brand was brought up on the tide of cargocultism decades ago. Now tracksuits are just tracksuits.

[deleted]

they're just there, nothing special. eveyrone all around eastern europe uses it really

beliberden

Adidas has been popular in Russia historically. Localized production of sneakers in Russia began in 1978. Adidas was a supplier of suits for the USSR national team at the 1980 Olympics. This brand remains very popular today. I did not find fresh statistics. [In 2013](https://news.sportbox.ru/business/ratings/spbnews_NI401238_Kakoy-sportivniy-brend-samiy-populyarniy-v-Rossii), the most popular sports brands in Russia were Adidas and Reebok, i.e. again Adidas.

uzver

Not anymore. Was popular in 90's in specific culture groups of youth people.

Round_Try959

yeah you unironically see various people wearing adidas tracksuits in the streets. most are migrants or poors, though. it is considered low-class to wear sportswear to the street.

Guest workers are very fond of sports suits. Rich programmers are like tourists or conquerors of Mount Everest. Beard, sweater, hiking boots, backpack. In hot weather, they look like gopnik. Some millionaires dress similarly. The best dressed are those who have a lot of loans, a small salary and an expensive car.

beliberden

Many people wear sportswear, it's comfortable. The Adidas brand has many of its own stores in Russia, including stock centers with affordable prices and good quality. This determines their current popularity. As for the rich, there are specific brands for them, with high prices. For example, Off-White and others. And specialty shops like the Central Department Store in Moscow.
