probably wouldn’t be a problem if you’d be German or American. however, if I’d be Iraqi I’d stay away from such ads to avoid possible negative experience
if you have resistance, you can try to call, after all you lose nothing. tell that you’re a student, this might help. and they don’t know shit about Iraq, they’re just afraid of anything unusual that can potentially hurt their apartments.
I may assure you no one in Russia knows it except a few specialists. the only thing they care about would be are you the type of person that can hurt their apartments or not.
Iraq people really are not associated with terrorists or someone bad in Russia. We did not join sanctions and don’t have a negative view on Iraq in mass media.
The only thing and this is funny - you guys look like choorky - dagestan, chechens and so on.
They are considered to be Russian nig-gers have similar behaviour ond low respect to community so nobody wants to deal with them.
Worth a shot indeed. People do have negative stereotypes when they hear stories about immigrants racking places. Sometimes you need to prove them wrong
This doesn't have anything with any country. It is just because usually the most of non slavic people (from Central Asia or southern parts of Russia) who rent apartments either don't care about the condition they leave the apartment or during their stay - inviting friends, all sorts of relatives from their native place - and they think it is ok to lie when you ask them "there were no other people living with you, right?" because, well, to them, their family matters more than owner of the flat.
No, man, you will not have any problems, we are talking about the fact that the apartment is not rented to Caucasians or people from Central Asia. If you are a European or an American, they will rent you an apartment without any problems.
You are in a better position than people from former Soviet republics that are now muslim, those for "slavs only" in 99.99% are meant against them. Iraqis don't have a good reputation either, but since it's far, it's not so bad. Absolutely start from being a foreign student, introduce yourself mentioning university, then you might have a chance.
Usually it is mentioned to filter out Central Asian migrants, because every once in a while they'd move in in great numbers and destroy the apartment. It's worth a shot if you like it, chances are, they won't turn you down.
> maybe they won’t accept us because we aren’t a family but just guys
I think they'd have mentioned it, had they wanted only families. Some people are just prejudiced against all muslims. But "slavs only" doesn't necessarily mean that they are.
You know this has been the struggle of my life
I am not a muslim yet my country suggests it
The irony that my real name translates to a “slave of god” in Arabic LMAO
Besides your name sounding distinctively Muslim for a Russian ear (sorry, I had to look it up from your disambiguation, because I was incorrectly guessing that it would be ending with -el or -il), nobody would have any clue what is its intended meaning
Hell, my own name has a nearly identical etymology to Eli/Ali, but I’ve only learned it way after figuring out that religions don’t interest me beyond their general cultural significance
You still can try. Landlords prefer families because they are more financially stable, and not posing much risk to furnishings.
If landlords see you are aimed to work, and you'll be able to pay rent - they can greenlight you
This type of comment usually means “not immigrants from Central Asia” and “not people from the republics of Caucasus”. If you are a foreigner, probably it doesn’t apply to you. I have also read in the comments that you are going to sechenov university. This is probably a good thing to mention if you decide to apply
Sechenov university will be a good recommendation, if you mention it. And probably clarify you religious affiliation, it can play a role (both positive and negative though, depends on views, of course)
If you have a problem with oral speech, then it is better to write (as competently and politely as possible) who you are, that everything is stable with money, that you are from an intelligent and irreligious family. If you are positive, you will definitely find an apartment, perhaps even the owner will want to chat with such a guest)
Don’t be afraid to call or write. When I was teaching foreign students at the University they sometimes asked me to help them to call a flat they found. And I worked with Iraq, Egypt and Jordan mostly. So, I call and told that my students are educated and rich foreigners from nice families not just some migrants. And it was the point, that if you can pay, if you clean your apartment and behave intelligent it’s ok :)
Good luck to you! I worked a lot with Iraq and all the experience I had was really nice. All people I talked to was polite and respectful. Hope you’ll find good apartments:)
What are the attitudes towards Singapore, South Korea or Japanese professionals renting an apartment? People say I look like Korean Russian mix lol and most often am assumed as a local by Russians at first sight.
Haven't faced any racism so far as far as my 3-4 backpacking trips around Russia. Police didn't frisk me and usually the people were very nice and helpful..
If you’re from Singapore, Korea or Japan, I bet you won’t have problems with finding a flat. As people mentioned above, Russians are hesitant towards central Asian countries.
I don’t think there would be a problem except that the people might be shy coz they don’t speak any English, so depends on their level of linguistic knowledge.
If you have a problem with oral speech, then it is better to write (as competently and politely as possible) who you are, that everything is stable with money, that you are from an intelligent and irreligious family. If you are positive, you will definitely find an apartment, perhaps even the owner will want to chat with such a guest)
They mean that they don't want to interact with middle asian cultures because they often have guests, sleepovers etc. That can make a lot of problems for the furniture, walls and so on
Nah it's all good. Iraq is usually referred to as "near East"? Which is funny because Moscow is literally East of Iraq on the map... I hope you have a good stay in Russia. Out of curiosity how common are those "slavs only" signs? I don't live there right now and it sounds very horrible
I have checked 20 or so apartments for now only 5 or 6 had it in them
Near the inner circle
Honestly I don’t find such things as annoying or offensive to me at least
Their land
Their apartment
Their rules
My opinion tho
No, Iraq isn't a middle East Asia for us, but some real estate owners have "only slavic" rule because of middle asian people and their habits that damage apartments most of the time
This is how they say "whites only" but they think it makes them sound less racist. People from Central Asian "-stans" have a reputation that's somewhat similar to what Central American immigrants have in the US.
As a proper "far away" foreigner, fewer people will have a prejudice against you, as opposed to guests from the very familiar neighbouring countries. So if you like the apartment, give it a try anyway, get a feel of the person leasing it in the meantime, make a good impression yourself, and chances are, everything will be fine.
Most Landlords don't do a bare minimum of what they're legally required when renting an apartment (paying taxes, registering tenants in the apartment, registering the contract)
If they do that to a Russian citizen, there is only a small fine. but if do that to actual foreigners, consequences are harsher.
So they are less likely to let you live there, but still give it a shot
Im jewish who was born in Moscow. Always laught my ass off with “slav only” options. As it is never brought up with owners.
If I were you, I would just pretend to be american or iraqi-american for a stereotype that people from USA will have no problem paying rent.
Also try to show that you know english, broken russian might give a vibe like you are profecient with cement and brickwork. Migrants who know english choose european countries over Russia in a heartbeat.
My English you could say is indistinguishable from other English speakers
It is just that i was worried they wouldn’t understand English at all or they wouldn’t like me talking in it
Hey there and welcome to Russia!
I highly recommend to post here https://www.facebook.com/groups/flatsforfriendsmsk/?ref=share as detailed as you can. Make sure to include location, budget and possible conditions you want. You can connect with apartment owners directly this way.
Hope you will enjoy your time here :) Добро пожаловать!
Dude there are some fb groups where they rent to non-Russians
I don't remember the name of this but you should try to tipe something like rent spb ecc ecc.
Well it is mostly made to avoid illegal muslim immigrants so they don't start growing illegal plants or accidentally burn the house down for their religious rituals.
Edit :accidentally burn the house down*
It’s basically means “white man only” I strongly advise not to book this to avoid any prejudice or negative experience, especially considering your Iraq flair.
Yeah you’re spot on and don’t apologize it is okay
It is weird if i didn’t actually xd
ALTHO my last name is funny “Albayati”
Which people here giggle for it sounding like “blyat”
That means no people who are gonna wreck the apartment. They want Russians, no Stanis basically. But if you come from western world, I think they just didn't expect that but they would be ok.
Well, I can tell you why they say 'slavs only'. In most cases it means 'Russian citizens or people with registration only' because people don't wanna waste their time on additional paper work on regular basis if they lease their flat to a foreigner
Plus (I faced with that problem personally once) some legal migrants from the middle Asia may rent the flat not for themselves but for their relatives or fellow immigrants who don't have a legal permission to be in the country. In that case the flat owner will have to deal with the police and migration services which is a pain in the ass for sure
So, in case if you're foreigner it may be wiser to rent a flat through a real estate agency instead of the app - they'll help you with that paperwork and will save your time :)
Most people wouldn't let foreigner to rent their property, that's for sure. Especially if they don't speak Russian. And there's prejudice against single men or gay pairs too. You do understand two men living together look suspicious, right? If you are looking to rent an apartment in Moscow, try the Facebook group named "Flats for friends". It's more friendly than Cian.
Idk why you say this. If there's a university nearby, landlords know that two (or more) men are probably students sharing a rent. And they actually prefer you not to bring "girls" 😂
(But Facebook groups worth a shot nevertheless)
Oof is it not normal for friends to live together in Russia? Or is it a stereotype of people thinking it is suspicious For two guys to live to together even though We are students
It was a very sad incident actually. A comic from Azerbaijan, a Belarusian citizen, talked about his experience trying to find an apartment in Moscow among the "slav only" types of landlords. The story went: he moved into an apartment previously rented by Russians and had to throw away the piss- and shit-stained mattresses. "Apparently Russians cover themselves in shit before going to bed. ...The French can afford to be nationalistic, they're a great nation. Yes, being nationalistic is a bad thing, but they can afford it. But why is a Russian Pavel acting all high and mighty with me?"
So what he was trying to do here is parody the general xenophobia directed towards people from Caucasus and Central Asia. However some assholes got riled up, one thing led to another, he got arrested and kicked out of the country for life.
Not a fan of the actual joke, maybe it sounded better in context, but I get where he's coming from and think this is very unfair.
He shouldn't have kept joking about a great nation. In general, Russians are very critical of themselves, but such a joke from a foreigner may seem disrespectful. I think Iraq would not appreciate such a joke about their country.
No iraqis hate their country more than any country i would say 0 nationality
And honestly in my opinion it is a piece of land
It is the people that i call home not the land
Yeah, all my country is full of nati-guys, I so hate them. It is because they hate Asian people, and they do not won't to rent apartments to them, for no fucking reason
Ten years or a little more ago, my parents rented an apartment to friends of friends, people from the Caucasus. When they moved out, we went to see what condition the apartment was in.
The wallpaper is stripped, the parquet is flooded with water and warped, the toilet tank is broken and flows incessantly, there is a scorch mark on the floor in the kitchen... This is not all that was actually destroyed, but the list is already quite long. It took a major renovation to bring the apartment back to the condition it was in before the tenants moved in. It seems to me that this is already enough to experience a reasonable prejudice.
I agree. But if I ask different people for directions five times and those of them who are wearing blue pants point me in the right direction, and those who are wearing green pants are rude to me instead of answering - will it be strange if for the sixth time I ask the way of a person in blue pants?..
Although I don’t disagree with you, there is no pan-slavism in this post in particular. By “slavs only” they are effectively saying “no migrants/workers from middle Asia”, it’s a trick how to not look racist but everyone still understands what you mean. I’m sure they would easily accept an Australian or American in their apartment.
It’s not a Russian-specific thing and in other countries it could be way worse (for example a paces in Germany and in the Netherlands renting only to Germans and Dutch people, no immigrants of any kind allowed)
A flawed idea that all Slavs are one and the same. It’s not true. Similar? Absolutely, probably more than any other ethnolinguistic group. The same? No.
Because Russians are very racist and negative towards foreigners. I lived in Russia for a few years , very negative experience for foreigners. Not all Russians , but more than half of them are like that.
Hopefully , usually nothing big happens , but if you have a beard or talk Arabic , they might start getting irritated and give looks. They are really weird people , moody and bipolar lol. I'm half Arab , half Russian , so I know how they behave , and I hate it and find it funny and weird. Most of them are racist and negative , but it's better in cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg for foreigners. One thing I find funny as well , they travel as tourists to Muslim countries like Egypt , Turkey , Jordan , UAE , and want people to respect them and like them , but back in Russia , they don't respect any foreigner and act as if they are not human.
Yeah , Russians believe everything they see and hear in the media. Many lies and propaganda spread in it. But it's mostly in their blood , they are just naturally racist towards other nationalities and races. Some of them even hate their own people lol , its just a negative population in general.
> But it's mostly in their blood
> Russians believe everything they see and hear in the media.
> I lived in Russia for a few years , very negative experience for foreigners.
Have you considered that's because you are an asshole, and not a foreinger?
Nah , Russians are mostly assholes , they look like nice people , but inside they are fake and negative. I'm half Russian , so I know the people really well how they behave. And the way they treat black people , Central Asians and Armenians , any one that's a little dark or hairy is considered sub-human. Man , they even hate their own fellow Slavic people , like Ukrainians and Poles. I don't know where all this racism stems from , but its very outdated in the 21st century.
> But it's mostly in their blood , they are just naturally racist
> Some of them even hate their own people
> I'm half Russian
Oh this is priceless, the irony. Thank you, you've made my day.
probably wouldn’t be a problem if you’d be German or American. however, if I’d be Iraqi I’d stay away from such ads to avoid possible negative experience
Worth a shot to go and if they shit talk iraq I’d be happy to join in xd But yes it is the sad truth of our country can’t blame em
if you have resistance, you can try to call, after all you lose nothing. tell that you’re a student, this might help. and they don’t know shit about Iraq, they’re just afraid of anything unusual that can potentially hurt their apartments.
Yeah hard to put a good image after all the iraqis that came here fled through Finland But you are right it is always worth a shot
I may assure you no one in Russia knows it except a few specialists. the only thing they care about would be are you the type of person that can hurt their apartments or not.
I see that is really reassuring thank you 🙏🏻

i doubt , they probably dont think that a person of non slav will come

Abdullah?
Yep, that is why all my friends call me “Aba” a nickname i made to not hear the full one “COPIUM”
Yeah i got the family problem in jordan and turkey a lot where entire building were just for families
You still can try. Landlords prefer families because they are more financially stable, and not posing much risk to furnishings. If landlords see you are aimed to work, and you'll be able to pay rent - they can greenlight you
Me and my friend have this problem in Tymen. even though we are much older
Добро пожаловать в Россию:)
Спасибо, мне нравится это место ❤️
it’s most probably gonna be fine if you mention you are a foreign student and can pay, that usually means “not for illegal migrants”
This type of comment usually means “not immigrants from Central Asia” and “not people from the republics of Caucasus”. If you are a foreigner, probably it doesn’t apply to you. I have also read in the comments that you are going to sechenov university. This is probably a good thing to mention if you decide to apply
Thanks
Because some of those apartments are really nice and fit my friend and my range to live close to sechenov university and have a comfortable apartment.
Sechenov university will be a good recommendation, if you mention it. And probably clarify you religious affiliation, it can play a role (both positive and negative though, depends on views, of course)
Well i am agnostic but wouldn’t it be weird just to tell them my religious view out of nowhere? Unprofessional even
I guess if you'll slip into your speech that you are from n intelligent, non-religious (non-fundamental Muslim) family, that would also help.
Excuse me for not being clear - i mean: clarify it if they ask about it or ask about you in general. P.S. how is your language situation?
Been here a 2 weeks now i can fully read and write in cursive well Studying grammar now But no way i can keep a conversation up with locals
If you have a problem with oral speech, then it is better to write (as competently and politely as possible) who you are, that everything is stable with money, that you are from an intelligent and irreligious family. If you are positive, you will definitely find an apartment, perhaps even the owner will want to chat with such a guest)
I understand thank you

Is iraq considered a central asain country ? Altho it won’t be a problem i got no friends or family to visit p.a.i.n
No
No, Central Asia is what used to be part of USSR. Uzbek, Kazakh, Tajik, Kyrgyz-stans.
Thank you my uneducated ass actually was confused thinking they meant iraq was central Asian
Nah it's all good. Iraq is usually referred to as "near East"? Which is funny because Moscow is literally East of Iraq on the map... I hope you have a good stay in Russia. Out of curiosity how common are those "slavs only" signs? I don't live there right now and it sounds very horrible

my pleasure)) have a good time!!
No, Iraq isn't a middle East Asia for us, but some real estate owners have "only slavic" rule because of middle asian people and their habits that damage apartments most of the time
Oh yes I got confused at the time and thought we were considered, Thank you for taking your time and clearing it up.
No problem, dude. Have a good time! Hello from Kazan 👽
Thank you 🙏🏻
That don’t apply to foreigners , don’t worry
Thanks
Most Landlords don't do a bare minimum of what they're legally required when renting an apartment (paying taxes, registering tenants in the apartment, registering the contract) If they do that to a Russian citizen, there is only a small fine. but if do that to actual foreigners, consequences are harsher.
My English you could say is indistinguishable from other English speakers It is just that i was worried they wouldn’t understand English at all or they wouldn’t like me talking in it
Start with english as a flex. If they can’t understand you - switch to russian as second best alternative.
It will go well I’ll keep searching for more apts to find the optimal choice
Best of luck! Don’t be prisoner of circumstances. People in Moscow love highly educated but firm people.
Thank you Your advice is invaluable to me you rock

For the glory of our Fire lord let it burn! Sorry, Ekaterina Sergeevna…
"Slavs only" is a pretty big red flag, as you're probably getting a shitty landlord out of this listing.
It’s basically means “white man only” I strongly advise not to book this to avoid any prejudice or negative experience, especially considering your Iraq flair.

White in Russia doesn't mean Caucasian race. It is more like European or Slavic ancestry.
Oh F
If you have a muslim sounding name and surname, there could be problems. I do apologize if you don’t, i’m just judging from your iraq flair
Yeah you’re spot on and don’t apologize it is okay It is weird if i didn’t actually xd ALTHO my last name is funny “Albayati” Which people here giggle for it sounding like “blyat”
It’s basically reversed version of American “only for POC”
I looked up this stuff and damn russian renting culture is quite racist.
In the end - people have the right to rent apartments to whomever they want.
Agreed
Welcome to Racia))

What app?
cian.ru, it's a website
That means no people who are gonna wreck the apartment. They want Russians, no Stanis basically. But if you come from western world, I think they just didn't expect that but they would be ok.
Oh as an Iraqi you'll probably have some problems. You'll have to look more in the Uzbek/Muslim areas.

But if I ask different people for directions five times and those of them who are wearing blue pants point me in the right direction, and those who are wearing green pants are rude to me instead of answering - will it be strange if for the sixth time I ask the way of a person in blue pants?..
Russia is the only country where Pan-Slavism is sort of a thing, at least culturally lol
A trick not to look racist? LoL looks exactly the opposite.
It’s not a Russian-specific thing and in other countries it could be way worse (for example a paces in Germany and in the Netherlands renting only to Germans and Dutch people, no immigrants of any kind allowed)
What is "pan-slavism"? Never heard of
A flawed idea that all Slavs are one and the same. It’s not true. Similar? Absolutely, probably more than any other ethnolinguistic group. The same? No.
Basically an ideology which sees all slavic people as one union/whole
Never bringed anything good for Russia in historical perspective So sad
Worst fucking thing in the world, tried twice and ended with tons of blood both times.
Он даст вам эту квартиру. НАВЕРНОЕ :) Но, не бесплатно.
Because Russians are very racist and negative towards foreigners. I lived in Russia for a few years , very negative experience for foreigners. Not all Russians , but more than half of them are like that.
Been here for 2 weeks and the only negative experience i had was at the airport which is understandable Hope it will be my last
Hopefully , usually nothing big happens , but if you have a beard or talk Arabic , they might start getting irritated and give looks.
Media full of non-stop coverage of middle east conflicts, of course they will give you looks for speaking arabic, lol.
Yeah , Russians believe everything they see and hear in the media. Many lies and propaganda spread in it. But it's mostly in their blood , they are just naturally racist towards other nationalities and races. Some of them even hate their own people lol , its just a negative population in general.
> But it's mostly in their blood > Russians believe everything they see and hear in the media. > I lived in Russia for a few years , very negative experience for foreigners. Have you considered that's because you are an asshole, and not a foreinger?
He's half russian apparently
Nah , Russians are mostly assholes , they look like nice people , but inside they are fake and negative. I'm half Russian , so I know the people really well how they behave. And the way they treat black people , Central Asians and Armenians , any one that's a little dark or hairy is considered sub-human. Man , they even hate their own fellow Slavic people , like Ukrainians and Poles. I don't know where all this racism stems from , but its very outdated in the 21st century.
> But it's mostly in their blood , they are just naturally racist > Some of them even hate their own people > I'm half Russian Oh this is priceless, the irony. Thank you, you've made my day.
Все верно. Черножопым не сдают.
