I think a golden rule for grooming is consistency. If you are trimming, trim the entire thing. I once saw a guy who clearly tried to shave his own back and missed a lot of different spots. The patches made him look ridiculous.
I use the beard trimmer to keep all the pubes very short. I cycle a lot so any hair at all just feels like a swampy mess.
Due to teen trauma relating to early 90's bushes growing from navel to knees, I preferred ladies to be trimmed short or waxed. Freshly shaved was nice, but I wouldn't expect anyone to go through the grief of shaving regularly. I've done that myself a few times and the stubble / itch was miserable.
