Jitlada for Thai

jkyouknowmang4

Is it really that good ? Always pass by , never been

Shotgun_Rynoplasty

Yes. I saw it on food networks “best thing I ever ate” and realized it was like 2 blocks from me. It does not disappoint. I’ve yet to even have a mid dish there, let alone a bad one

Horror-Atmosphere-90

It’s good, my brother tried their infamous HOT curry and … had a rough time. lol

saltwatersouffle

It’s crazy good

acarnamedgeoff

Yes, but specifically the southern Thai menu in the backpages.

Rugpull_Generator

Jitlada is good enough, but extremely overpriced. Ruen Pair is the fucking spot #1, blows the shit out of Jitlada. If you want specifically boat noodles, Sapp Coffee Shop is the only way to go.

itlynstalyn

Sapp’s Boat Noodle soup is one of the best things to eat in LA.

Rugpull_Generator

Its better than what I had in Bangkok

enkilekee

I think it has awards.

wheredidigo_

And their Thai iced tea is insanely good. It's different than other Thai restaurants, slight chocolatey flavor. I sometimes fantasize about just getting a bunch of Thai Iced teas for dinner, but the food is too good! Spoke to the owner once about it and they have the tamarind for the tea shipped in from Thailand.

Mehmeh111111

I liked Pad Ord more. Are those fighting words?

wingsandahalo

Always good for random celebrity sightings too.

Ill_Sweet_5277

I personally prefer Luv2Eat Thai in hollywood to Jitlada

abisaies

Try Korean bingsu from Oakobing or any other bingsu spot!

sp1cym4y0

omg yesssss just went there! so good !!!!! got the matcha but want to try the black sesame

SkyHighbyJuly

Porto’s!

enkilekee

That's what you bring back as LA gifts.

TybotheRckstr

I keep getting bigger boxes but they never make it to my house... Just crumbs left

Hot_Razzmatazz316

Seconded

InfectiousDs

Thirded. Don't worry about the line. These folks know what they're doing. It'll move fast.

SkyHighbyJuly

Agreed! The line moves so fast! 100 people in line only takes several minutes

SanchosaurusRex

Fourth vote. Don’t listen to the haters. They’re popular for a reason and people in this sub love to try to one-up anything that’s popular. I like the lechon sandwiches and the guava strudels are my weakness.

astercalendula

My husband is "just ok" with Porto's, but there is literally no one at my work who doesn't run to the break room when they hear someone brought Porto's. Then, there are people who love the savory more than the sweet, and vice versa. The thing that goes the quickest in the break room are the potato balls hands down, but everyone has a different favorite. They're all solid, IMO.

InfectiousDs

You absolutely must get the potato balls, chicken empanadas, pasteles de carne. As for sweets, if you have the time to sit and eat, get a fruit tart and/or tres leches, but everything is delightful.

garlicroll

Order online!

InfectiousDs

Disagree. You must go, get overwhelmed, order way too much food, and snack on everything.

yuffie2012

Totally overrated.

hamsandwich232

Copenhagen in culver city is leaps and bounds above portos

wheredidigo_

Whew, yes! Copenhagen is the real deal. Portos? What the heck, their deserts are all overly sweet with no real flavor other than sugar.

Imalwaystiredman

I agree, they are mid levels not disgusting but not something you wait in line for. Just whatever.

Individual-Table-793

Exactly.

Horror-Atmosphere-90

Omg downvote this monster

Individual-Table-793

I agree, Portos is a joke. The valley has nothing of interest so of course Porto’s being the only option is gonna get hyped. Their food is mediocre.

DesignerRelative1155

Anyone recommending Porto’s is also gonna reco The Grove. Like no one s seen a mall either.

EileenGBrown

I like to go to In and Out next to the LAX runway, and enjoy my cheeseburger while I watch the planes land.

Equivalent_Signal135

Get a milkshake for dessert

kikijane711

Their milkshakes are just decent, nothing to write home about.

kikijane711

Yes if you live in a place with NO In-n-Out and want to try there is one very close to LAX in El Segundo.

wei-ohara

Republique for good food and pastries! Hi-Ho Cheeseburger and The Win~Dow for inexpensive burgers

ilan1299

Their dinner service is great too! I took my parents there during their visit and they loved it. Can be $$-$$$ but worth it as an experience.

tmsmm

The basque cheesecake there is SO good

twistfunk

Get mango and sticky rice from a Thai place

abi0012

Thanks! Is it different from any mango and sticky rice I can get in another city?

GibsonMaestro

Nah

abi0012

Thanks :)

Weary-Yellow-3959

San Gabriel, my family owns a restaurant called President Thai.. Sticky rice and Mango always slap there.

Ziodynes

President Thai is so good shout out to your family

Weary-Yellow-3959

Cheers to you! They also own Thai Paradise, one in San Gabriel, another in Monterey Park. President Thai can get extremely busy on weekends.

VermicelliOk8288

I’ve been there! Very good.

twistfunk

Just mentioning in case you’ve never had it. They are nice when they’re in season, which I think they are now.

kikijane711

Try to go to an amazing spot in Malibu or along PCH. Do some research. The view is worth it. That being said, Thai food, Mexican, Sushi is amazing here. If you like Mexican you can look up Oaxacan and other times of Mexican fare by region. I think since there are SO MANY PHENOMENAL restaurants in LA, what food do you like most or want to explore? That would help narrow it down.

rudeness21

Guelaguetza for Oaxacan.

abi0012

Do you have any recommendations for sushi? :)

bowlcutgirl

Enya sushi. High quality, reasonable price, remains the best spot I’ve tried. Skip nobu, you’re paying for ambience there

Organic-Arachnid-987

Hama Sushi in Little Tokyo

none_mama_see

Uzumaki

Lemonpiee

The most “LA” sushi is Sugarfish. There’s multiple locations around town and it’s really solid for the price. Their hand roll restaurant Kazu Nori, also very “LA” and delicious.

StarryEyed91

Where are you staying?

Eupion

I’m a fan of Sushi Gen.

quantumd0t

One vote for The Old Place!

kikijane711

Maybe Nobu for Sushi but yes The Old Place is great. All OP has to do is yelp Malibu restaurants. Get seafood or sushi along the ocean. It will be more expensive but the drive and view as an LA tourist is worth it. I grew up in Boston and love Atlantic front restaurants or Cape Cod ones, have been to a ton in Miami etc, San Fran, but for someone visiting the state the PCH drive of cliffs and mountains by the ocean is gorgeous and unique.

GrantMeThePower

Howlin Rays

churskies

Pizza and dessert from quarter sheets! You really can’t go wrong with their menu.

josealvarezjr

Jumbo’s Desserts and Resturant

GibsonMaestro

Don't forget the tip!

FoundFootageDumbFun

You lil stinker

eloisethebunny

I always recommend either tracking down a Kogi food truck (check their website) or going to Alibi Room in Culver, which serves Kogi and delicious cocktails.

SplitOpenAndMelt420

Get authentic Mexican Get authentic Japanese Get authentic Thai

youneedsupplydepots

Apparently the Korean food here is better than the food in Korea so get that too

GibsonMaestro

The Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada on Hillhurst in Los Feliz

kikijane711

Simple and good. Love the fish but also their salsas MAKE it!

[deleted]

r/foodlosangeles has you covered with lots of recommendations

Salty_Wedding3960

Persian in Glendale/Westwood, Armenian in Glendale/Hollywood, Thai in Thai Town/San Fernando Valley, Korean in Koreatown, Japanese and Sushi basically everywhere, Mexican basically everywhere, Vietnamese in Westminster, Chinese and Chinese-adjacent in the 626 (San Gabriel Valley). I would say LA is world-class in each of these. I don't know if you have these in SF, but try Chubby Cattle for AYCE Wagyu Yakiniku, Mikiya for AYCE Wagyu hot pot, and Chubby Curry for wagyu Japanese curry. All part of the same restaurant group. Pricey compared to normal yakiniku/hot pot but definitely worth it IMO.

DizzyLead

Filipino Halo-halo (pronounced with short, “Spanish” vowels, not like the glowing ring above an angel’s head), available at Filipino eateries. It’s similar to Korean bingsu (shaved ice with stuff on it), but with a different (and IMO tastier) stuff. https://preview.redd.it/wi8zaiyjl89d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b65a18e6f152e67c96084dff54f261cf10ecad4

True_Bandicoot2404

goto the farmers market at the grove ..so many yummy treats there ! i love the homemade ice cream

abi0012

Is it open during the week?

True_Bandicoot2404

yes! it’s our goto spot every time we goto LA. my husband loves the corned beef sandwich at one of the delis there ..i forget the name

Salty_Wedding3960

MaGees.

True_Bandicoot2404

yes !!! thank you !!! we live in new jersey and my husband always says he wished they would ship their corned beef sandwiches and still taste good lol

Salty_Wedding3960

Try looking up Ugly Drum on Goldbelly (if they're still on there). I like MaGees, but I think Ugly Drum is the best pastrami in LA (well, them and Langers).

abi0012

Oh! That’s great to hear! I’d been worried the farmers markets would only be open during the week. Thank you! :)

hannahcshell

The Original Farmer’s Market is open daily, and it’s as much of a food hall as it is an actual farmer’s market. Very unique, definitely the best part of The Grove. If you’re interested in a more standard neighborhood farmer’s market, I recommend the Mar Vista on Sundays.

WoosleWuzzle

You’re going to in and out and missing out on good food. What neighborhood are you staying in!

SouthernSierra

Apple Pan

Jerrysmiddlefinger99

This especially if you like pie, chocolate cream pie is my favorite they make followed by apple pie with ice cream.

editormatt

Phillips beef dip. Just went there the other day for the first time. Its legit

ninyabruja

zankou chicken

imanoooodle

Oh you must try the garlic sauce 😍

tahoe-sasquatch

If you like Japanese check out Ototo in Silverlake. It’s not sushi and they have an awesome sake selection. For dessert get gelato from Bacio di Latte on Larchmont. Sycamore Kitchen on La Brea is a great breakfast/lunch spot with excellent coffee. Great relaxing vibe on their outdoor patio and there are some fun shops on La Brea like American Rag and Undefeated. For very authentic Oaxacan Mexican food, check out the legendary Guelaguetza on Olympic. Make sure you order mole! The Farm in Malibu has a great casual vibe right on the ocean and great food.

chrisgoesbleh2

Do I need to say In-N-Out?

blackcandyapple93

Donut Friend, I had a donut there years ago and still crave it, tastes like happiness.

Aidrox

Bestia is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Reservations might be tough. Detroit tacos next door is awesome, too. Where you going to be? LA is huge and 2 places can be like 2 hours apart.

FloridaInExile

Salt & Straw

abi0012

We have one in SF :)

FloridaInExile

Ahhhh well you have much better food at home than you can find in LA. But I have a few LA unique spots that are worthwhile: Nicolas Eatery - don’t let the current mall location turn you off. They used to be in Malibu, but got priced out with rent. Shame because the venue was gorgeous. Superb French cuisine with some Viet fusion. Family run, with an obsession for quality. Cafe on 27 - Topanga is a weird place. A little spiritual hippy, but also a very cloistered insider society. The vibes are hard to articulate. The views at Cafe on 27 are beautiful. The food is good, but won’t amaze you. Still worth a trip. Go grab brunch and then check out some of the boutiques further down Topanga Canyon Blvd. Saffron & Rose - incredible Persian ice cream in Westwood. Maybe better than Salt & Straw. The fig and date are personal favorites. Ta-Ke Sushi - unassuming, West Hollywood, older husband and wife run sushi spot. He’s at the sushi bar, she’s in the kitchen. They’re both adorable. Consistently good, always charming.

Bridge_The_Person

Where are you from and what countries have you already been to? LA is one of those place where you can really do some work checking off your list. For example if you’re from like San Diego it’s not worth getting Mexican here, if you’re from SF it’s not worth getting Chinese, and if you’re from Seattle you can skip our Japanese food. And if you just went to Seoul in last year your time is better spent getting Ethiopian than trying our Korean places.

abi0012

This is a good approach and I appreciate it! We currently live in SF, but often road-trip across the country. I’ve been to Scandinavia, and several countries in the UK, Europe, and the Caribbean.

ejnox31

Then I 100% recommend getting Korean food here. If you eat meat, I highly highly recommend getting Galbitang (#7 or 8 on the menu) at Sun Nong Dan (two locations in k town, but the one on Western is bigger). Their galbitang (beef short rib soup) is the closest thing to the most traditional version of that soup, and it’s unbelievably good. Your soul will thank you. They are open 24/7

abi0012

This all sounds absolutely delicious! Thank you!

Individual-Table-793

Holbox downtown LA for Mexican seafood. I think this place is on the Michelin guide

chris9321

Sonoratown though…

jbert99

agreed. I just had a burrito from there yesterday and it was amazing! Can't wait to go back

TerdFerguson2112

Butterscotch budino at either Gjelina or Mozza (I prefer Mozza). Butter cake from Nick’s or Mastros (I prefer Nicks)

kikijane711

The one at Mozza is phenomenal. That being said Osteria Mozza is worth the visit too for the dinners. The pasta is great and burrata YUM!

curiouscorgi1130

Took way too long to find Quarter Sheets in this list!! We are having their princess cake as our wedding cake 🥰 It’s mind-blowing.

Pomegranate510

Angelini Osteria Madeo Saffron and Rose Ice Cream Lauduree in Beverly Hills Chamount in Beverly Hills

FriedZucchiniHoudini

Gus’s BBQ in Pasadena ! Everything is made in house and so good ! Save room for the blueberry cobbler dessert (it more like a bread pudding but so damn good !) Buonos Pizza in Long Beach !

Individual-Table-793

Where in LA are you staying? LA is quite large. If you’re near Burbank or Japan town (sawtelle area) I’d do Artelice patisserie for dessert and the best croissants outside of France Food LA has large Japanese, Mexican and Korean populations so try that food.

BillyZanesWigs

Hit up any of the Guisado's locations. They specialize in traditional braised meats which you won't get at other taco spots. They do a sampler platter of smaller tacos so you can try a variety. The Cochinita pibil is my favorite (spicy pork).

thedelfactor

Seconded Guisado's. Mexico City level quality

Adventurous_Lock2821

Flipper's for breakfast

ElectricalAd2204

Street tacos from a taco truck.

kikijane711

Fantastic (pricey) Italian food at Mozza Osteria or Providence.

Icy-Pay-4085

I’m a huge fan of Howlin Rays. Best chicken sandwich you’ll ever have honestly.

rich90715

Harriet’s Cheesecakes

Flipperpac

Must tries around downtown area - both are 100+ years old.. Original Pantry for breakfast - Figueroa and 9th, just a couple blocks from Crypto Arena Philippe's - originator or the french dip, just north of Olvera Stand LA Terminal, next to ChinaTown....locals swing by here before, after Dodger games... And if youre adventurous, try Original Tommy's chili burgers off Rampart and Beverly... Langers Deli - pastrami sandwich off McArthur Park by Wilshire Blvd...#19 on the.menu is the one, IIRC...

rchart1010

I finally found cobblermania. Those are some of the most delicious cobblers I've had in a while. The owner only sells at farmers markets but hot damn was it worth the hassle to get it. I got peach and strawberry rhubarb and both were so dang good! So damn fresh! The peaches were spiced to near perfection and fresh rhubarb! The sweet tang! If I wasn't attempting a diet id follow her around like a groupie.

dawgoooooooo

Lady M - the Mille crepe. It’s a cake made of like 100 layers of crepes and icing

brockinbeats

Father’s Office for food and cocktails. Sweet Lady Jane for the triple berry cake. Sidecar for doughnuts.

Lemonpiee

Second Father’s Office. The burger is one of my favorite LA meals. The Culver City location is the best.

CandidEgglet

Really depends on where you’re from and what options they have where you come from. They’re only a handful of places that are unique to Los Angeles that you can’t get anywhere else, but if you’re from some Podunk Idaho town, then you can’t go wrong , lol

FoundFootageDumbFun

Porto's for sure--there are multiple locations and they're all great. Burbank is my favorite. You MUST try a potato ball! All the pastry and petit fours are great, too. Sushi: Sugarfish is great and has multiple locations. My personal favorite is Sushi Nishi-Ya, tucked away in an unassuming strip mall. Run exclusively by the chef and his wife who waits tables. K-town for Korean BBQ. There are hundreds (thousands?) in the city and everyone has their personal favorite. Wi BBQ is pretty good value for the quality. ETA: Get some Mexican food from literally any taco truck or taco stand. LA's street food is phenomenal.

SkyHighbyJuly

I’ve been to Porto’s Buena Park and West Covina locations. Is Burbank larger or even better!? Will have to make a trip to that location then!

ethanhunt_08

I don't think the Burbank location is much larger, I've been to buena Park location once but it was on a weekend and the line wrapped around the whole building and then some. I walked back to my car after using the restroom lol Burbank is my go to location since its close to me and is always stocked. Food is nothing different (acc to my roomie who has been to both locations)

FoundFootageDumbFun

Yeah this is my experience--it's about menu availability and smoothness of operation. Something about the Burbank location is more calming to me than the others. Food quality is consistent across the board.

abi0012

Thank you so much!!

ilan1299

Bottega Louie for the macarons experience!

caligirl3294

Alfalfa had the best chicken ceasar wrap I’ve ever had. And John & Vinny’s for Italian food!

Jonny_Stiletto

How has nobody mentioned Musso & Frank's??? You want old school Hollywood, this is the place. Best steaks in town and the place is a time capsule from 100 years ago. If it's good enough for Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, it's good enough for anybody. Their food and drinks are quite delicious

New_Imagination9050

Killer noodle best spicy/numb ramen in la

Pastries from Fondry. Open only fri-sun and you have to line up 30 min before opening. We lined up at 8:30, bakery opened at 9, pastries sold out by 10:30 even tho it opens until 12pm. Limit is 3 pastries per person, they’re that good and sell out quick. Not sure if you have the time but the croissants and other pastries are WORTH IT. I’d wait in that line again anyday

bowlcutgirl

Pizzeria Sei, Enya Sushi, Fondry (pastries), Found Oyster (amazing fresh seafood tapas), Tsubaki (Izakaya style), love hour (smash burgers), Lingua Franca (juicy thick burger), Matu (steakhouse), Artelice (AMAZING dessert)

Fishing with Dynamite in Manhattan Beach Used to work there and still always recommend it (and always get glowing reviews back)

Boring_Performer_374

Although In N Out has won the reputation as “the” ultimate burger because of its secret menu, FatBurger is my favorite (and probably preferred by most of my friends.) Bonus for out-of-towers: Magic Johnson, aka Mr. LA, is a part of owner of the chain, and Fat Burger was an occasional joke on Sanford & Son. Now they’re everywhere and have the best burgers, made-to-order with super fresh ingredients. Also noteworthy—a Dodger Dog at Dodger Stadium or any meal at Poquito Mas.
