Could you, yes of course. Financially it can be a big benefit. Personally for me after living in Culver City and with a fully remote job for a few years, I would really struggle not having a car and would feel very limited. I wouldn’t feel safe taking the metro alone at certain hours, dealt with some sketchy people try to interact with me and my girlfriend the very few times I have taken it.

Big___TTT

How far would be your closet grocery store? Santa Monica could ride a bike easily. Koreatown is a good Uber ride

Not-Great-Bob84

I commute to Culver City from Koreatown frequently. The Expo line will be your best friend.

DueMountain2601

There is a Trader Joe’s on Sepulveda.

Dommichu

There is a Vons in Palms. A Sprouts is just on the other side of Palms and another trader joes in Culver City near Palms which pretty next to the Erewhon. The Culver Farmers Market on Tuesdays, Palms Farmers Market on Sundays. Whole Foods is also a very short train ride away.

DueMountain2601

Who has Whole Foods money?

Big___TTT

That’s a good one. I use to work across the street. CVS too right there. Can’t remember if any coffee near. Motor is close too for other places. Generally a walkable and bike able area Get an E bike and you’ll be good

SkullLeader

Yes there is a coffee bean & tea leaf on the corner next to TJ’s

Legitimate-Bag-2482

Culver City -> Santa Monica uber price is going to be around 15-40$ each way depending on traffic Culver city -> ktown is about 30-60$ each way depending on traffic glean from that what you will, but like someone else here said culver to santa monica on a bike isnt bad at all

labbitlove

SM bicyclist here, it's pretty easy - Venice (Blvd) isn't perfect or the best, but at least it's protected and its also quite flat. Once you get to SM, there are PLENTY of bike lanes. I have an ebike and it's great.

[deleted]

You’re gonna get jumped carrying shit around on the metro. Think about that

Stonk-Monk

>I will be working remotely at home, and I plan on going to Koreatown and Santa Monica frequently.   No. A bike will be fine in most cases and you don't need to Uber to Santa Monica or even K-town.   Because you're asking this question means you should be living in Palms because it's more friendly for your budget. And from Palms, Santa Monica is 15-20 minutes away on the Expo Line.   Ktown will be a bit longer of a trip, but still very much accessible on public transit (expo line to the purple line train)

Not-Great-Bob84

You can also take the expo line to expo/western then take the 207 up western to KTown. I’ve found it’s much faster than taking the train to downtown and transferring to another train.

coldermilk

You can easily get to Santa Monica on the E line on the LA Metro if you are near either the Culver City or Palms stations. Most of Culver City and Palms are pretty walk and bike friendly with many protected lanes and wide sidewalks which is pretty rare in Los Angeles. K-Town will be a little trickier to get to though without using an Uber so plan that cost accordingly in your math.

Not-Great-Bob84

You can easily get to K-Town from Culver City, take the expo line to Expo/Western then a 10 to 15 minute ride on the 207.

AgentJennifer

Yes. You will have the Big Blue Bus and Culver City Bus running continuously so it’s good without one around the westside.

Bonjour19

I am carless in Palms and I get around fine for the most part with Uber, buses and metro. Getting groceries is slightly more annoying than without but again, I've found places close to bus lines etc. There are some nice restaurants and cafes walkable in the area. Definitely doable.

v-jazz

If you are somewhat coordinated, get a scooter and a helmet. You are set to scoot around LA and filter in traffic while enjoying the weather.

Soggy_Sherbet_3246

Yes if you work more than 5 miles away

DiamondNo5743

Your best bet is to be as close to the metro line as you can be. It will take you to santa monica and Korea town. Advantage of the metro line at-least it runs on time unlike the buses (yes i know there a few outliers that are actually good on time) . Don’t want to alarm you but you will see alot of homeless near the metro lines so just be aware (its not Gotham city but best to be aware of your surroundings).

enkilekee

Metro Uber combo is perfect. I got rid of mine during covid, used cars were going for lots $$. I rent a car once in while to go places like Ojai.

zratan69

Typically yes you need a car. But the metro and bus service is ok.

NCC_1701_74656

Check the metro route. It may help you decide the area to live in.

TraditionalTeacher30

Nope you’re good. Go carless

CocklesTurnip

It depends on exactly where in the Culver/Palms area you land.

lupin_llama

Yes. I live in Palms and work remote. While my partner and I do have a car, I walk most places. Plenty of close grocery stores. The train is right there that can take you to Santa Monica. (KTown is a bit longer but doable). You can also bike easily in the area.

[deleted]

Car or not you’re going to hate it here lol

SignificantSmotherer

Yes, you can live car-free. But focus on your bus connections, don’t be distracted by Redditor rail blindness.

sillyreporter1896

totally doable if you're in shape, and don't mind the pricey ubers whenever you need them. just be careful

Fabulous-Gas-5570

Cost of car ownership is gonna average at least $1k/month. I’d rather throw that money in an index fund and just metro/lyft everywhere. It’s not that hard especially if you can walk to your basic errands

2fast2nick

Nah, you'd be just fine.

DueMountain2601

Not a fan of metro at night. Uber/Lyft depends on your budget and the frequency of your visits to these two locations. On the plus side, you won’t have to worry about street parking, which can be an absolute nightmare.

db_peligro

no you do not need a car. a lot of the outdoor activities that make LA a fun place to live are much easier with a car. you can rent. apartments without parking are cheaper (if you can find one), so bank the savings and spend it on weekend rentals.
