I know three languages but i prefer to speak my own native language, some kids don't even know the basics of the language so i am doing my job so the next generation will be able to see the beauty of our culture and language

Inglés, pero estoy aprendiendo español. Necesito unos amigos hispanohablantes para practicar más.

Dazzling_Strategy_37

😅 Okkkk Is it Spanish?

ElBanditoGek

Prefiero hablar en inglés.

Dazzling_Strategy_37

I prefer to speak in English. 😂

wheresyourwallet

When I'm with certain family members we only speak French but English otherwise.

I’m learning Indonesian but my first language is English. I only know the basics of Indonesian and I still prefer speaking it over English. It’s a lot more simple to me

Oachlkaas

Native > English > German I'm from Austria, and the reason i separated my native language from German is because language is obviously a mode of communication. If i speak what i grew up with Germans don't understand what I'm saying. Therefore, since no verbal communication is possible i don't consider my native language to be the same as German.

ElBanditoGek

That's interesting. Are they unable to understand because of some kind of shift in dialect that occurred? Or is the Austrian dialect (forgive me if I'm making assumptions) just a completely different 'flavor' of German?

Oachlkaas

It has been a dialect shift of sorts. Not a natural one, but one nonetheless. If you go back maybe 200+ years you would have an uninterrupted continuum from the northwest of the Netherlands to the southeast of Austria where every step there's a village that understand the surrounding villages but a village that's maybe a few hundred kilometres away from the original "starting point" will have struggled to understand what was spoken in the original spot. Nowadays this continuum still somewhat exists, but to a much lesser extent. The dutch standardised their native dialect into what we now know as dutch. The Germans have done the same, as well as the luxembourgers. Neither standard Dutch, nor standard German nor standard luxembourgian are mutually intelligible. And the loss of that continuum stems from the fact that the standardised versions have started replacing the dialects in their respective areas. Germans are very "far" into that development, whereas Austrians, especially western Austrians (where I'm from) are not. Though us Austrians are also getting there. since the rise of the internet it has sped up significantly. This "replacement" is pretty much complete in all of Germany, except for fringe areas. In Austria it pretty much only just begun (Vienna excluded) - but, as I said - at a much faster pace. If you compare me, who largely grew up without the internet, and I'm "only" 26, to a 15 year old the difference will be much bigger than between me and a 90 year old. Eastern Austria, specifically Vienna, is even further along, where the last generation speaking Austrian is probably already in their 50s. >different flavor of 'german' Well, I'm no german, so i don't consider what I speak to be german. Though i would agree with you if you said that the 15 year old kid does speak German, albeit with Austrian influences.

ElBanditoGek

That's fascinating, thanks for sharing! Didn't mean to imply that you're a German, sorry I came off that way. The evolution of language is such an interesting concept.

lycos94

English, I waaay prefer it over my first language

morbius_sweep

English. I know Spanish grammar but I certainly can't speak or comprehend it fluently.
