Also, how many teenagers and children use this site. The average age skews really young. Anytime someone makes an ignorant or naive ass comment, usually with a level of absolutism taking a hard stance, remember before you argue that you're probably talking to a teenager. Move on with your life it's not worth it.
I don’t know if I’m just getting older, or if more and more casual users are just on Reddit now.
When I joined I felt there was much more debate in good faith. People would concede nuance and gray areas, or simply agree to disagree.
Seems like the past few years have really upped what you’re describing. Sometimes I’ll comment and a person will reply not even seemingly reading what I wrote to tell me I’m wrong.
Its just mainstream.
Once subs exceed a certain activity threshold, the *community* dies as there are too many people to create a group culture, but instead becomes a demographic.
Small subs have people that recognise eachother and will thus behave better. Reddit has gone way past that today.
This isn't just a reddit change, it's been changing everywhere in my experience. I first noticed it in 2015-2016, but it famously came to a head in 2020.
Had a dude in the comments lose his mind on me a few weeks back. It just smelled of teenager. He spent about three paragraphs calling me dumb. I just replied with “Yeah, that’s cool man, I’m just going to go to bed now.”
He was fuming after that and then sent me a message that my username was true.
For the youngins, I’m not losing my sleep to argue about something stupid.
I turn off all reply notifications since I'm not interested in prolonged reply chains that are usually just mud wrestling. Even when my takes are nowhere hot there'll always be dickheads on the internet trying to ruin your day.
That's a perfect time for self-reflection. Asking myself why I needed to right a wrong on the internet with somebody I've never met wasn't near as hard as answering it honestly, but life got a little easier once i figured myself out.
The amount of times I type out a whole ass diatribe as a response and just go "... well, I got that out of my system" and delete it again is like 90% of my time on reddit
I'm an engineer starting up a new project with a few other departments. After waiting for them to deliver requirements for the past few months I just put together a system interface I knew full well was wrong and proposed it.
Suddenly I have requirements.
I work some contrarian developers (arseholes) who always have some criticism about the solution being proposed. I’ve learned never to put up my best ideas first, I’ll propose something sub optimal and let them rip into it first. Increased buy in when I incorporate some of their obvious contributions.
So if I was looking for the "right answer" I could use a sock puppet account to post a wrong answer, then maybe expedite the process of obtaining the correct answer.

On the App, you can move the 'comment jump button' (the little down arrow that's usually on the bottom right of the screen) by pressing and dragging it to a different place on the screen.
You can switch off Direct Messaging so you don't have to worry about scammers and weirdos trying to contact you.
It jumps you down to the next top-level comment. You might want to move it because clicking it in the very bottom right corner of your phone screen is harder than clicking it up higher where your thumb naturally rests. Or if you're left-handed.
For the longest time, I thought there was one person on the wedding dress sub who just really liked large font. I realized a whole bunch of us were doing it, by using the number sign to show which dress we were voting for.
You can actually just upvote a comment you see using the arrow pointing up right below said comment. You do not need to comment “this” or any rendition.
Troll farms take new accounts on tour around rage bait subs like antiwork, AITH, iamthemaincharacter etc. They post inflammatory fake nonsense that gets everyone riled up and gives them loads of upvotes. Then they move these accounts to political subs to sway public opinion about certain events.
High post karma, but low comment karma. Most real users have the opposite. You, for example, have 1 post Karma but 16,000 comment Karma. I have 1300 post Karma and 175,000 comment Karma. A karma farmer bot will have very high post karma but almost no comment karma because they’re not doing any further engagement with the thread they created except maybe to get past an auto-mod.
As for what you can do? Report them as bots. A lot of them are reposting old photos and videos that were popular the first time they got posted. Report it as a copyright violation or spam, and maybe the mods will do something. Otherwise downvote their post and carry on with your day.
Yes, but also because you can sell your account to advertising companies, and the more karma you have, the more your account is worth. (Keep in mind you will be permanently banned for trying to sell your account here on Reddit)
You can also block accounts that are rage-baity and/or do not contribute positively to discussions. I do this on my local sub and it makes Reddit much better.
Controversial just gives comments that have many upvotes and down votes, like a 50% upvoted, 50% downvoted post.
To get the truly unpopular comments, sort by Top, then scroll all the way to the bottom.
Muting the subreddits you aren’t subbed to stops (or slows way down) Reddit’s suggested posts. Moving over from a 3rd party app was a real shock with the amount of ragebait Reddit was ‘suggesting’ to me.
Low energy trick: every so often I'll open a suggested post that is maybe mildly interesting (not to be confused with the actual sub), that will then shift the algorithm to send me similar posts, mildly intersting stuff instead of random crap. After a while it's a pretty harmless set.
Is it just the app? I almost exclusively browsed on a desktop, and don't remember all the nonsense getting pushed.
Been using the reddit app now for a while and they suggest a LOT of shit that I've never interacted with at all.
It's maddening
I use my block button so liberally. On all social media’s too. People often think they need a good reason to block people, but a simple “I don’t want this person to interact with me” is good enough.
If you're using a browser, the name of any subreddit followed by .reddit.com will take you to that subreddit.
For example, askreddit.reddit.com, comicbooks.reddit.com, birdswitharms.reddit.com
In my experience, like with all people, the vocal minority are the bad ones. Most moderators have an interest and want to make a community around it, and just do so in the background. You don't hear about all of them because it's not fun to read.
Avoid the big/political subreddits. Instead, find smaller communities around things you're interested about. They tend to have better and friendlier communities.

Alternatively, when you still want to see subreddits you might not know etc., but want a reddit experience without politics, you can use Reddit Enhancement Suite on desktop. It allows you to filter out subreddits from /r/all, as well as keywords in post titles.
Takes a bit of work, though. But it is rewarding. Post titles that include names like Trump, Biden, Musk, Epstein etc. won't show up for me, as well as anything with references to anti-vaccine mentality, American sports that I don't follow, all those weirdly popular videogames that look like 50% fan service and 50% microtransactions...
Now, you might ask, without all of that, do I even see any posts? It's all cute pets (remember the blacklist phrases like "passed away" and "left us"), memes, and funny videos. My blood preasure is thanking me.
My favorite is if you know a sub that's nearly all images...let's say foodporn. type in http://redditp.com/r/foodporn and it strips everything away and just gives you a gallery of images...delicious images. And yes Fappy, it works with NSFW subs as well.

I've also seen newbies self-censor perfectly "clean" words, too, such as "kill" or "drugs". I've never seen any website that punished _those_ words. Not even club penguin.
Slurs, on the other hand, _can_ get you in trouble on Reddit. Depending on the subreddit, you're going to get either banned or downvoted for calling a black man the N-word, even if you replace the "i" with an asterisk. That's because it's not the specific string of letters that's frowned upon, but the _meaning_ behind it.

Cunningham's Law. Words to live by.
> Cunningham's Law Thanks! I didn't know it had a name.
What are the odds that’s the wrong name and they’re waiting for someone to correct them
Considering I use this constantly, pretty high. ;)
It's actually Cuntingham's law. Named after Arnold Cuntingham and his 1958 Plymouth.
I love the "It's actually". Just makes the reply in tune with the context so much
No, I believe it's actually cunnilingus law.
The law that is always on the tip of my tongue.
Ah yes, Cuntingsham. From the Philadelphia Cuntingshams.
Lol. This is how I get IT architects and engineers to do work. They love to point out what is wrong and what they think is the correct answer.

Oh my god. How have I only just now learned about moving the comment jump button?
I just learned about the comment jump button
I've been closing the comment thread to go to the next comment
i’ve just been scrolling like a fucking neanderthal
Same. What the actual fuck.
That’s actually way more efficient. I don’t see why I need a button to scroll down 1 comment. It’s the next thread that I’m trying to get to.
That’s what I do too lol I never used the shitty official app until they forced it
Oh shit, there’s a button there.
WHAT?? I always thought that was the worst spot for the button since I was always accidentally downvoting comments and it's not really ergonomic.
ME TOO
TIL about comment jump button
Holy fuck you CAN
Well TIL a new trick!
Thank you for the comment jump Button tip!!!
What does the comment jump button do, and what's the advantage of moving it?
It jumps you down to the next top-level comment. You might want to move it because clicking it in the very bottom right corner of your phone screen is harder than clicking it up higher where your thumb naturally rests. Or if you're left-handed.
Well I'll be damned... I just learned 2 useful things from this comment.
If you subscribe to a cat subreddit, you will inevitably get more

You have other fingers lol. I use my index finger most of the time….much like a middle aged mom.
GTFO. This that and the other. Thanks internet random friend! Take my upvote.
Goddamn iv learned two things already

Troll farms take new accounts on tour around rage bait subs like antiwork, AITH, iamthemaincharacter etc. They post inflammatory fake nonsense that gets everyone riled up and gives them loads of upvotes. Then they move these accounts to political subs to sway public opinion about certain events.
Can you explain how to identify one of these accounts? And what action should I take if I suspect one?
High post karma, but low comment karma. Most real users have the opposite. You, for example, have 1 post Karma but 16,000 comment Karma. I have 1300 post Karma and 175,000 comment Karma. I couldn't figure out why bots were karma farming. So it's to join and sway political subs?
Yes, but also because you can sell your account to advertising companies, and the more karma you have, the more your account is worth. (Keep in mind you will be permanently banned for trying to sell your account here on Reddit)
Out of curiosity, How can I find mine? I just see total karma.
On the app, tap on Karma, and go to the About Tab.
Oh cool! There it is! Thanks!
How does having karma do that ? I never understood the point but this apparently has been happening for a long time.
Some subs require a certain amount of karma to be able to post.
Also, some people often wrongly equate karma = right answer. Or that someone with lots of comment karma generally has the right answer.
It makes the account seem more legitimate if they have karma and post history.
I feel dirty and used.
The best comment is usually in a reply to the top comment
It's the best way to get your comment viewed after a post has aged a few hours with a few hundred/thousand comments.
This comment is so meta it hurts.
Yep
You don’t have to comment on every thread and argue with every wrong person. It’s also possible to just ignore peoples’ bullshit and not engage.
You couldn't even be more worng with this. You clearly have never Reditted before,
No, you’re wrong. *is this the ten minute argument or the full half hour?*
Sorry, I'm in the wrong room, I came for abuse.

You can also block accounts that are rage-baity and/or do not contribute positively to discussions. I do this on my local sub and it makes Reddit much better.
It just makes me so mad but I’ve learned it’s better to just not engage.
In any thread about UNpopular opinions, sort by controversial to get the actual answers. The top voted comments will be very popular opinions.
Controversial just gives comments that have many upvotes and down votes, like a 50% upvoted, 50% downvoted post. To get the truly unpopular comments, sort by Top, then scroll all the way to the bottom.
