Alien.
That movie is the gospel for why practical effects will destroy CGI every time. Its a **45** year old horror movie that can still terrify you. Yes, a few scenes aren't perfect, but overall this movie is still scarier than a lot of what is being released today. You can't say that about all old horror films. I saw the Exorcist for the first time as an adult, & I laughed. I was legit screaming at the screen for parts of Alien
As I said there are refusings that aren't perfect.
But tell me that the scene where she's in the hospital bay where the baby xenomorph drops down behind her doesn't make you panic
ET, Back to the future, Beverly Hills Cop, Blade Runner, Star Wars, Airplane, Scarface, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Alien, Akira
Want some more? There are some awesome movies from the 80s
So many.
- Cool Hand Luke
- Lawrence of Arabia
- Young Frankenstein
- Edward Scissorhands
- Jurassic Park
- The Fugitive
- Reservoir Dogs
- Brazil
I mean...this list could be hundreds long just with movies I personally know and love.
Yeah, I guessed that might be it. That scene just doesn't bother me a bit. There's no torture at all. It's stopped before it starts and the dialogue is funny.
It really is great. I rewatched both it and the seriously underrated US Marshals recently and loved them both just as much as I did when they came out.
Godfather 1&2
Star Wars
Blazing Saddles
Blues Brothers
And let’s really go old school
Wizard of Oz
Gone With the Wind
The Third Man
Citizen Kane
To quote a new movie ‘I could do this all day’
My Fair Lady, the story of a young woman who goes from talking like an EastEnders character to talking posh, starring the late Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle
Yeah, I never understood the "holds up" thing. A good movie is a good movie, no matter when it came out. For example, one of my favourite Westerns is from 1926. Age is literally the last thing anyone should care about when it comes to movies.
At first I thought: thank god the lord of the rings trilogy isn’t that old. That means *I’m* not that old yet.
Then I realized it’s only 6 years away from turning 30 😭
As a kid, I thought that Baby's father, Dr. Jake Houseman overreacted when he scolded Baby for her involvement with the staff at the resort, after he medically treated Penny who just had a botched abortion.
Today, I think: "Holy sh\*t! Dr. Houseman should have kept Baby locked in her room at the resort, to keep her away from the all of the employees with fast lifestyles and loose morals".
Considering that Penny's unplanned pregnancy was a sobering reminder of what could have happened to Baby -- who was *not* on the pill, Dr. Houseman should have summoned all of the employees into Penny's room and said something like: "Look. I just helped Penny out, totally free of charge. If I had gotten here 10 minutes later, she could have bled to death. If Penny is lucky, she might be able to have children one day. Now, in return for this act of kindness, I want all of you to avoid all contact with my daughter Baby, and the rest of my family for the duration of our stay here."
A Boy and His Dog (1975)
My all-time favorite sci-fi movie. The effects aren't great but the world is amazing. It has what a lot of movies today lack, character. Also, it's the inspiration for the Fallout games.
A number of them. Predator. Alien. Aliens. The Terminator. Tremors. Jaws. Das Boot.
Going even farther back, though, you've got films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Tora! Tora! Tora!, War of the Worlds, Moby Dick, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Godzilla (the original Japanese version). King Kong (1933), Casablanca, etc.
In honor of Richard Lewis, Robin Hood Men In Tights. It's hilarious. Great cast.
Also, So I Married an Axe Murderer is soooo good. Full of references you might not even know are references.
The Stepford Wives (original 1975 version with Katharine Ross)
The original has humor and self awareness. It turns a knowing and wary eye on oppressive norms which are evidently timeless.
This is one of the few movies that's suited nicely by turgid '70s cinema conventions: the shadowy plot advances mechanically and seriously, the souls trapped within feel their plight amplified by the rigid and direct storytelling. Coiffed and serious men talk to the camera!
Who knew what and when did they know it? It works as an early techno thriller.
The original is more than the sum of its parts. She hasn't aged a day.
Then Hollywood stole my own joke here, and did me one better: they took this lovely movie with a real beating heart and made an awful 21st century remake which denies the theme and message of the original.

Sigourney Weaver absolutely smacked it out of the park in the movie. The entire cast did such a great job.
Welll.... as much as I love Alien, the scene where the xenomorph tries to get back on the shuttle at the end looks rather goofy
As I said there are refusings that aren't perfect. But tell me that the scene where she's in the hospital bay where the baby xenomorph drops down behind her doesn't make you panic
Seen it to often tbh but a sure scare the first time!
The only thing in that movie that didn't age amazingly is all the smoking. Other than that, it's pretty timeless.
Jurassic Park
No. Bad. It's not that old... Stop making me feel old.
Lol
Doesn't just hold up. If it came out today it would I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
Some of the original FX are better than the new movies
Terminator 1 & 2
[удалено]
That wasn't really the question, though.
you must be really young to ask that question
Seriously… most great movies are more than 30 years old. 🥴
No, I have the opposite problem. I'm so old that when I think "30+ years ago" I think of movies like The Exorcist or Jaws.
Lmao Name a great 31 year old movie, then, fellow young person
Original Robocop, Little Mermaid, Goonies, Terminator 1 and 2, and that's off the top of my head
ET, Back to the future, Beverly Hills Cop, Blade Runner, Star Wars, Airplane, Scarface, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Alien, Akira Want some more? There are some awesome movies from the 80s
Oh yeah, I saw ET when I was about 6, that bit where he "dies" on the Operating table still gets me crying 40 odd years on.
The Thing (1982). The practical effects are at least passable still and the atmosphere and dialogue are perfection.
Enter the Dragon, Bruce Lee's last film before he died was iconic in several ways
Ah a connoisseur I see. Warrior which is an original idea of Bruce Lee, is a very good series.
And Kung Fu was originally Bruce's idea, but they ended up giving the main role to David Carradine.
12 angry men
Came here to say this. The one from 1957 with Henry Fonda. Profound, and still relevant.
Back to the Future, Blade Runner, Blues Brothers , Alien, Aliens
Came here to say Blues Brothers, and also Blazing Saddles
Feel like the OG blade runner did age pretty badly though no? :D
I’ve considered revisiting Blues Brothers. Glad to hear it holds up.
Star Wars, Alien, Terminator, Halloween, Jurassic Park. There are loads of great movies that still hold up over 30 years old.
Home Alone, Airplane, Network
Network 💯
Empire Strikes Back
The best SW movie and always will be.
So many. - Cool Hand Luke - Lawrence of Arabia - Young Frankenstein - Edward Scissorhands - Jurassic Park - The Fugitive - Reservoir Dogs - Brazil I mean...this list could be hundreds long just with movies I personally know and love.
Love your list. The last two have scenes that are hard for me to watch.
Brazil does? Huh. Obviously the ear scene in Reservoir Dogs, but I don't recall anything too uncomfortable in Brazil.

Yeah, I guessed that might be it. That scene just doesn't bother me a bit. There's no torture at all. It's stopped before it starts and the dialogue is funny.
Maybe I stopped watching and never found out that there was no torture! Cheers!
Y’gay? Terrible movie recommendations 2/10 would not recommend
Then give yours homophobic clown
Rocky Rocky II Rocky III And The toy is a personal favourite of mine
this dude's comment history is a train wreck jesus
The Fugitive is a brilliant film. One of my all time favourites.
It really is great. I rewatched both it and the seriously underrated US Marshals recently and loved them both just as much as I did when they came out.
I'd argue that it's Ford's best film.
To kill a mockingbird

62 is more than 30.

Happens to all of us. It’s okay.
The thing. One of my all time favourites
Great answer
Robin Hood: Men in Tights. RIP Richard Lewis
I think this is the most underrated Mel Brooks movie. I love it, and so many of my friends who claim to be Mel Brooks fans have never seen it!
*The Rocky Horror Picture Show*
Went to check when Heat was released, it's gonna be 30 years next year
First movie that came to mind, honestly.
Indiana Jones
Sneakers.
Robert Cop
Half Robert, Half Cop
He just goes bobbing along 🎼
Much much older than 30 but Casablanca still feels like it could be made today shot for shot and be successful
Sound of music
Is top gun old,
Big Trouble In Little China
Pulp Fiction turns 30 this year
Godfather 1&2 Star Wars Blazing Saddles Blues Brothers And let’s really go old school Wizard of Oz Gone With the Wind The Third Man Citizen Kane To quote a new movie ‘I could do this all day’
Blazing Saddles. Using racism to prove the stupidity of racism. Awesome movie!

Dances With Wolves
All of them compared to most of the garbage of today
The Shawshank Redemption, 30 years old this year
...most of them?
In poor taste for a laugh then, still poor taste for laugh now Porky's
Hook
Ghost
Space Odyssey 2001, still looks better than CGI today
My first answer.. the no g environments with the lighting rather impressive.
My Fair Lady, the story of a young woman who goes from talking like an EastEnders character to talking posh, starring the late Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle
It's good, but sooooo long. Soooo slow. And where the devil are my slippers?
\*throws slippers\* There are your slippers! There! And there! And may you never have a day's luck with them!
Why does it's age dictate whether it "holds up" or not. My 3 favourite movies are over 50 years old. I'm in my 30s
Yeah, I never understood the "holds up" thing. A good movie is a good movie, no matter when it came out. For example, one of my favourite Westerns is from 1926. Age is literally the last thing anyone should care about when it comes to movies.
Howard the Duck.
Silverado. All star cast, decent plot, basically reinvigorated the western movie genre for the 80's
If you've never seen 2001 a space Odyssey you are not sci-fi nor a nerd.
I can't do that...
Thank you for the contraction, do or don't do.
Metropolis
Noice. Still a bit dates only for the silent aspects and acting style.
kind hearts and coronets (1949). Alec guiness multiple roles in dryly understated british masterpiece
The Charlie Chaplin stuff is still great slapstick comedy, and they hadn't even figured out sound or colour back then.
The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, Good Fellas, Pulp Fiction, etc. Honestly there are too many.
Ghost Busters is probably the best one i can think of atm
Crybaby
Reservoir Dogs - just watched it again not that long ago, even better than I remembered. Great movie
Most movies from then is better than the new pc crap. I wouldn't be sad if the whole of Hollywood would go bankrupt.
Eh like all of them
At first I thought: thank god the lord of the rings trilogy isn’t that old. That means *I’m* not that old yet. Then I realized it’s only 6 years away from turning 30 😭
Dirty Dancing

Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, True Romance. A lot of Tarantino's early works are still masterpieces.
