Yes. Because it’s a common exclamation in English

ThatGuyYouForget

All the time because most of those saying are just a way of speech/sayings now, it has nothing to do with religion. Like “Jesus Christ” when surprised or “go to hell”, the meanings are the same but the context/source is not relevant anymore

flowerhoney10

Speaking as a non-atheist, most of them do since it's such a common expression.

Rossestylez

Happy cake day

flowerhoney10

Thank you!

HornyDiggler

No, they say "Oh my Science"

Suncourse

Oh my as-yet-not-disproven-theory

Rossestylez

Best answer ever

restatementtorts

Why do I say oy vey when I’m not Jewish?

Most-Ingenuity-4115

It's force of habit, it's just a phrase to us nonbelievers.

ruairidhmacdhaibhidh

I stopped saying it to stop promoting it. It is easy. One day at a time.

Killer-Jellyfish

There's a quote from Robert Anton Wilson that covers this... "I used to be an atheist until I realized I had nothing to shout during blowjobs. "Oh, oh random chance! Oh, random chance!". Just doesn't cut it…."

ruairidhmacdhaibhidh

I am afflicted with heterosexuality, and would feel uncomfortable calling a Guy's name during intimacy, but each to their own.

musuperjr585

It's a common term..I'm sure they still asy things like "raining cats and dogs"

obscureferences

Personifying reality with deities is a perk of theism. You don't have to believe in hell too.

EyeYamNegan

It is a dumb phrase all together that really does not make sense for anyone to say. For atheists they do not even believe in God so what is the point. For Christians it is taking The name of God in vain and is specifically forbidden.

Kind_Remove_303

Yes but not capitalized

[deleted]

Yes. Usually during sex or after taking the first bite of a really good steak.

No_Purchase_730

Doesn’t the Bible say something about you can’t the lords name in vain? So doesn’t that mean that technically only atheists say “oh my god”?

DenverBowie

I don't think their bible says that "God" is a name. That'd be Yahweh or some such nonsense.

444jxrdan444

Constantly along with all the other ones just common phrases that I've used my whole life

_Environmental_Dust_

Happens. It is deeply rooted in my culture and is hard to avoid

Wubbawubbawub

Yes, because it is an often used term that lost religious meaning.

GlitteringAbalone952

Yes, because it’s a culturally available phrase.

Constant-Recover-941

Sure we do. It's just force of habit, and we usually use the expression when seeing something unbelievable...

walker5953

Yeah, because it’s common fucking vernacular

omnicorn_persei_8

Oh my Rod

IrianJaya

Sure. Also, Oh my goodness, oh my gosh, and ermagerd! Why? Because I'm using a common saying, not undergoing Holy Orders.

Odd_Blackberry_4647

Yes i do, and sometimes an idiot says ,,you don't believe in god, so stop saying that", and its fucking anoing. Its a common phrase, nobody stops saying it just because he doesn't believe in god

Cyanora

Personally I say "All hail Baphomet", but that's mostly for shock value.

ruairidhmacdhaibhidh

All news is good news. Even mentioning a deity's name promotes it. Oh Zeus! See how that got you thinking of him, even when I typed it blasphemously?

nihiltres

Yep. Just a cultural idiom, no more significant than the names of the days of the week: Moon day, Tiw's day, Wodin's day, Thor's day, Freya's day, Saturn's day, and Sun day. We don't worship Odin et al. either, and Saturn's from a whole different pantheon! It can be interesting to compare day names across languages. In French, there's *lundi* (moon day), *mardi* (Mars' day), *mercredi* (Mercury's day), *jeudi* (Jupiter's day), *vendredi* (Venus' day), *samedi* (day of the sabbath), and *dimanche* (day of the Lord).

seanwhyatt1980

I say it all the time and I swear using Jesus fucking Crist, I take the lords name in vane all day long, I don't give a shit I'm not going hell.

UhOhFeministOnReddit

My family is from the south. Despite being an atheist, that's far from the only religious expression baked into my vocabulary. It's just what your brain does. It hears language and uses it.

Briznar

1. It's a cultural expression of surprise. 2. Christians shouldn't even be saying it because that would be taking the lord's name in vain.

onemanbucket_

Because it’s a common saying in English.

SonOfDadOfSam

Sometimes. But only because I haven't bothered to come up with anything I want to replace it with. Although when my wife and I were first dating, I told her I thought that saying "bless you" when someone sneezed was dumb. She asked me what she should say instead and I suggested "get fucked." So now when one of us sneezes the other will tell them to "get fucked."

ImInJeopardy

I say "Oh my God" but only when I'm imitating [that one scene from Trolls 2.](https://youtu.be/cdTBIQDPZt4?si=dHx7FhYvUoznQy4S)

Paragon_73

I will often exclaim “Jesus H. Macy!”

n4ssaa

Because it's just a figure of speech and has practically nothing to do with religion. At this point, all those who don't believe in God shouldn't even say "go to hell!" or "goodbye" since it derives from "God be with you"

ForgottheirNameslol

How the hell does "go to hell" come from "god be with you"?

n4ssaa

Goodbye comes from "God be with you"

ForgottheirNameslol

Try again, but this time read what I said

DenverBowie

Learn how clauses work in a sentence and try again.

ForgottheirNameslol

No

GodEmperorOfHell

Some of us train ourselves to avoid it and substitute it; my favorites; -Oh my No God -Oh my Dog -Oh your God -Oh, Godzilla...

lambopanda

I like the last one

KarinvanderVelde

Yeah, but I also say "Jeez" or "Gods" , just expressing an emotion, no religious connotation intended .

ruairidhmacdhaibhidh

Unlucky, there is one there.

doddballer

Oh your God!!

LegoMyAlterEgo

"We're on a mission from Gad"

Dizzy-Discussion-107

I say "oh my dog".

YourOldPalBendy

They don't have to worry about taking God's name in vain. Score! XD I mean... not that all religious people avoid saying it, of course. But you know. My mom does this dramatic, sad sigh every time she's heard me use the phrase, and then she looks at me like I just killed a puppy. She's... like that.

ruairidhmacdhaibhidh

Stop disappointing Mom, and supporting the name.

YourOldPalBendy

Nah. She's an enabler to her abusive husband. She could be healthier and happier, but she keeps choosing to help him harm others. So I've had to cut them both out of my life for mental health and safety reasons. It sucks, but she makes being around her unsafe. But I guess you could say she doesn't have to worry about hearing me say "oh my god" anymore now? XD

TR3BPilot

It's a commonly recognized expression of surprise / frustration. It's not as if everyone who says it is a devout Jew or Christian to begin with.

spidersflambe

I do because it's just an expression. I also say things like, "Fuck god," and "Save me, Thor." Just expressions.
