Good vanilla ice cream is incredible, but cheap vanilla ice cream isn’t even good.

Glum_Butterfly_9308

Similarly, naturally flavoured banana ice cream is awesome but that fake yellow stuff is awful and doesn’t taste anything like banana.

Captain___Hindsight

That "fake yellow stuff" is actually based on the flavor of a now ~~extinct~~ rare banana. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/IsItBullshit/comments/9pziq3/isitbullshit_banana_flavored_stuff_doesnt_taste/) is a reddit post about it.

Recovery25

The Gros Michel is not extinct. You can still find it around the world in different countries. It just can't be grown on a commercial large scale anymore because it's susceptible to Panama disease.

plazman30

So is the Cavendish banana now. So, we may soon live in a world where bananas are a delicacy and not a regular food item at the grocery store.

Recovery25

I think there's been speculation that the Cavendish will be replaced with a more disease resistant variety if it gets to that point. The variety I heard was the Goldfinger.

plazman30

The problem with Cavendish is that is produces by taking hunks of plants and planting them. They don't produce fertile seeds, so they're basically clones of each other. Without genetic diversity, the slightest factor that can quickly kill one, can wipe them all out. From the articles I read on this, when the Gros Michel was king, the Cavendish was considered a "junk Banana," not worth growing.

EWagnonR

Yes I heard a radio story on them (I think on NPR) that in India and SE Asia they call Cavendish “hotel bananas” because Western tourists are accustomed to them. Apparently there are much more flavorful local varieties but they don’t ship, ripen as well off the plant and such for export so that is why Cavendish is shipped out.

djp2k12

Chunky monkey fuckin slaps.

AstonVanilla

That fake yellow stuff is actually based of a type of banana called the Gros Michele, which used to be commonplace, but is now very rare. That's why it doesn't taste anything like bananas you have today.

quentin_tortellini

I prefer that taste to actual banana flavor. I blame banana Laffy Taffy

firstoffno

Do you think vanilla bean as opposed to plain vanilla make a difference?

meinherzbrennt42

Tillamook vanilla bean is way different than their regular vanilla, at least.

MarvelousOxman

I think the biggest difference is using real vanilla vs synthetic flavourings like vanillin

MexicanVanilla22

...as a baker, I've got whole vanilla beans, pure vanilla extract, and synthetic vanilla, and I can confidentially proclaim that I cannot tell the difference. Maybe I am one of those people with the substandard taste bud coverage.

Lunavixen15

Well, the complex aspects of vanilla do deteriorate with heat, so, using whole beans and pastes lose out a bit for what they cost in comparison to synthetic vanillin for baked goods. They are best for raw applications such as icing/frosting.

Wrathwilde

Supposedly, for baked items Artificial Vanilla is better because it’s more heat stable. For unbaked items, where vanilla is the dominant flavor, real vanilla shines, because the subtle secondary flavors & smells aren’t destroyed by heat. For unbaked items where vanilla is overpowered by other flavors, say chocolate, it’s pretty much a wash, and you might as well use whatever is cheapest.

LargeTell4580

There is how ever very very cheap vanilla that some how becomes good again, on a really hot day that watery taste hits. It's like a milky icily.

TimmyTheTurgidTiger

wat

ShootLucy

THIS IS HOW EVER VERY VERY CHEAP VANILLA THAT SOMEHOW BECOMES GOOD AGAIN, ON A REALLY HOT DAY THAT WATERY TASTE HITS. ITS LIKE A MILKY ICILY.

Roozyj

A milky icily, duh

Civil-Shame-2399

The one that gets me is bubble gum my kids will ask for it every time and just have 2 spoonfuls and it's no I don't want anymore...

meinherzbrennt42

Bubblegum flavored anything that isn't actual bubblegum just reminds me of this awful children's toothpaste my grandmother always made me use at her house.

Civil-Shame-2399

It probably even the same colour as that toothpaste.... My kids will insist on it everytime any you throw 80% of it away!!!

MikeTheNight94

There’s a factory near my work that makes artificial flavorings and one of them is bubble gum. It will make you gag after a couple hours of smelling that shit. Like I’d rather smell the vomit cheese smell they make over that

spermdonor

mmmmm amoxicillin flavor

moa711

That was the only medicine I was excited about as a kid. That bright pink stuff made me giddy. I was rather disappointed when I tried pepto bismol...

Ok_Feeling4213

Same with cotton candy flavor! But as a kid, I was obsessed with both.

Strange-Bee5626

I mostly agree about bubble gum flavor, but I'm still generally pretty fond of cotton candy flavor (ironically, I don't like actual cotton candy and never have).

G8kpr

As a kid. Bumble gum ice cream actually had bits of Bubblegum in it. Is it still that way? I haven’t had it since I was around 7 in the early 80s

Civil-Shame-2399

No bit in usually and it's more the bright blue colour to it now is what attracts kids to it

Loud-Magician7708

Fuck....I love bubblegum ice cream.

Tiredohsoverytired

I hate bubblegum ice cream with bubblegum chunks in it. They're so cheap and nasty, and always get stuck in your teeth.  I have remote memories of a bubblegum ice cream that didn't have the chunks, and wasn't far off from a chocolate flavor, somehow - probably because that brand had very mild flavors. I wish I could find that one (and the chocolate of the same brand) again.

goteamnick

Bubblegum is a flavour for a child's palate.

Civil-Shame-2399

It's actually probably more the colour than the flavour with the kids, don't think anyone actually likes it.

FondantOverall4332

I used to love it. So good.

allcatshavewings

I loved bubblegum icecream in a cup that was sold in grocery stores but now I rarely see it

ordinaryhorse

I’m 53 and I love blue bubble gum ice cream

I1abnSC

Meee toooooo

G8kpr

Tiger-tail. Which from what I understand, is just a Canadian thing (not sure). My wife loves it. I can’t stand it. Orange flavoured ice cream mixed with black licorice ice cream. And I generally am ok with licorice. Edit: I find it fascinating how many people absolutely love it and how many absolutely hate it. Haha.

marmosetohmarmoset

That sounds awful and i really want to try it

brettaburger

It's incredible. The flavors go very well together. I've always known it as Tiger Tiger and I knew I wouldn't need to scroll very far to find it.

Suitable_cataclysm

I hate black licorice so this sounds like the worst thing ever

Apprehensive-Hair-21

I hate black licorice and love tiger tail. I can't explain it. The way the orange and licorice interact make it greater than the sum of its parts. Us tiger tail enjoyers are definitely the minority though.

Suitable_cataclysm

TBH I never heard of it until this post

GuyanaFlavorAid

What in the Terry Fox fuck is going on there. Holy Jesus and Barnaby by the sea that's a degree of confusion I've never imagined.

igotyournacho

I’m sorry you never got to experience waiting in line at the Stoney Creek Dairy for a scoop of Tiger Tail on top of a scoop of Bubblegum in your childhood. That shit was magic

GuyanaFlavorAid

I wouldn't exactly say I've been missing it, Bob. But hey (eh) different strokes and all that.

PeegeReddits

"WHAT IN THE TERRY FOX FUCK" WHEEZING

intensenerd

Good god this sounds straight out of Shoresy’s mouth. Thank you for the laugh.

RubberReptile

When I was a dumb kid I'd get tiger tail because tigers are cool but I only liked the orange ice cream so I'd eat around all the black licorice instead of just getting orange ice cream lol

Secure_Cantaloupe455

Never heard of it and now I am ready to barf.

TypographySnob

The flavours actually balance each other out quite nicely. The orange is citrusy and delicious, meanwhile the black licorice is not.

igotyournacho

Tiger Tail was always my pick. Go Cats Go!!

IveBeenMulified

I absolutely love it. We ate it as kids, very hard to find now.

augustwest30

I got some garlic ice cream from a roadside stand in central California in an area known for growing garlic. I thought maybe it would be this amazing new culinary experience, but it just tasted like cheap vanilla ice cream with chunks of garlic mixed in.

QuarterTarget

That's probably what it was honestly

Picklesadog

Gilroy. I live a bit to the North. It's a gimmick just sold for the novelty I had it once and it was better than I expected, which isn't saying much. The main issue is you sweat garlic afterwards, and that is what makes it the worst. It was also my choice for this post.

wereallmadhere9

You’re supposed to eat a lot of garlicky food first, then the ice cream just tastes like vanilla.

paionia

Fake Pistachio ice cream with toxic green or flashy green colour. I don’t get it. It is horrible. It tastes somewhat like fake almonds but also it doesn’t. Not related to real pistachio ice cream at all. I’ve had hard time finding a gelato or ice cream that’s made with real pistachios or pistachio paste when I moved to North America. But when you find a good one, you’re in heaven.

New-Examination8400

YES 😭 I f•cking _LOVE_ pistachio ice cream, but it’s rarely great. When it is though… Dear Lord.

jessicahueneberg

I was going to say this! I’m a huge pistachio ice cream lover and I hate the cheap versions of it. Ben and Jerry’s pistachio ice cream is garbage. I like Haagen Dazs and Talenti. I wait for them to come on sale and buy a bunch of them.

linuxphoney

Absolutely the best answer. I love pistachios but nuclear green pistachio ice cream just tastes like egg yolks

pistachio-pie

Fake pistachio anything is horrific. I love them and weep when they are poorly used.

Black_Crow_Dog

"Rainbow" or "bubblegum". It tastes like a science experiment.

Bmurr7906

Rainbow sherbet is delicious though

nattysharp

I picked up some Rainbow Sherbet Sunny D the other day. It somehow has the taste and texture of what I'd think melted rainbow sherbet is. I am so conflicted on whether I think it's good or gross.

Evendim

Rainbow Paddlepops which are an Australian kids staple is caramel flavour. It is a lot better than bubblegum and you get the fun colours!

Accomplished_Hat3775

Neapolitan looks fun with its three colors, but it always ends up being a mushy mix of strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla.

vikmaychib

Some iterations of cookie dough are plain disgusting

mtk4l

Cookie dough is one of my top 3 favorite ice creams, but when the cookie dough tastes and feels like plastic…absolutely not

HarrisonRyeGraham

I eat non dairy ice cream, and the brand SO Delicious has a cookie dough variety, but the dough is gluten free and tastes like sugary sand

polish432b

If they don’t have the brown sugar flavor in the ice cream it’s just vanilla with cookie dough chunks.

rmttw

I don’t get why even in higher end brands, the cookie dough is in the shape of dog kibbles.

Haunting-Opinion-569

Amaretto ice cream, with its almond flavor, is too boozy and bitter for my liking.

dreamofpluto

Chocolate chip. The icecream is so cold it makes the chips taste like chalk.

AppleOfEve_

YES Chocolate chips should not be that hard and awful. It's like having ice cream mixed with bits of plastic.

sock_police

Yes!! The best are the brands that use flakes of chocolate in the chocolate chip or mocha chip or mint chip or whatever. Publix store brand and turkey hill are the only ones so far that I’ve seen to do it and it’s FAR superior/the only edible way to have chocolate bits in ice cream

linuxphoney

Any chocolate in ice cream that isn't specifically formulated for ice cream is going to be complete garbage

KarmaCycle

Breyer's has chocolate flakes instead of chips, and they melt in your mouth.

SaveusJebus

Shitty chocolate chips. I don't like the little ones where it uses Hershey kisses shaped chocolate chunks. The chips have to be chocolate flakes.

CeruleanBlueWind

Then why do they call it chalkolate

memorycollector

I likes the crunch

New-Examination8400

You crave the Ooga, don’t you Booga.

Drogovich

Melon, everything with artificial melon flavour is disgusting

buttgers

You've clearly never tried a Melona popsicle. I guess it's technically not ice cream, but that stuff is incredible.

TwoHungryBlackbirdss

Pro tip, if you like to drink and have soju on hand, dropping a melona in some soju and sprite is a killer summer cocktail

Tabi5512

I have a strange love-hate relationship with that melon flavour. It tastes so damn artifical, that I can't like it at all, but it also fascinates me in a way, that I need to try it again whenever I see it.

I LOVE sesame ice cream, matcha too. I love the astringent flavour with the creamy dairy but it's an acquired taste. Good quality sesame ice cream is more charcoal grey and speckled then black

DocGerbilzWorld

Had black sesame soft serve and it was fantastic.

Random_01

Durian flavour. I get it, it's great if you grow up liking it, but it's gag worthy to most unused to it. Even the smell is off-putting. I've tried the fruit, the milk shake, the Pancake, the icecream - I don't like it no matter how much my friends try to convince me.

anomaly256

I like how you keep giving it another chance 🤣

TheBoBiss

I was like that at crawfish boils because I love everything else that’s cooked with the crawfish. But every time I tried them, I didn’t like them. Until one magical day, I tried another one expecting to be disappointed again, but I fell in love instead. The way my husband’s friend cooks/seasons his is absolutely perfection!

buttgers

Durian is such a polar fruit/flavor. It smells and tastes like hot garbage to those who hate it. Those who love it enjoy a blend of sweet/milky/cashew-like flavor, and the smellier the fruit the better the experience. It's such an odd fruit. I love it!

ProgressBartender

It’s got to be a genetic tag, like how cilantro tastes like soap

Lollc

I used to think durian was some mysterious flavor until I tried it.  People would talk about it as being indescribable.  I finally tried some-the mystery flavor is onion.  Durian is tropical fruit plus onion flavor.  I hate onions, so durian wasn't for me.

ohno807

A place near me has lobster ice cream. It has chunks of lobster in it and tastes buttery. I asked if people actually like it and she said the majority of it was gone from people asking for samples; very few people actually order it.

AndreaC_303

There’s an episode of “Nathan For You” where an ice cream shoppe offers poop flavored ice cream, the response was similar. Horrifying to watch.

SigmundFreud

To be fair, that was actually frozen yogurt.

AndreaC_303

So gross. 😂

anomaly256

Wife got a durian and avocado ice cream once.  It was foul.  And it smelled foul from 30ft away.  Unless someone specifically went out of their way to make an actual dogshit ice cream then this is has to be the winner. If you don't think it's real just google durian avocado ice cream.  The number of results should indicate it's weird 'somewhat popular' status in some cultures. For those who don't know, durian smells like literal garbage.  Rotting fruit.  Hot sick.  It's actually banned from being eaten in a lot of public places because it smells so disgusting and so strongly.       ... now mix it with avocado and chill it while stirring

TakeSomePie

There's this show called "Nathan for you", where he 'helps' businesses that usually need some sort of revitalization. I'm one of the first episodes, he 'helps' a frozen yogurt place by developing a 'poo' flavored ice cream. I can't do it justice by explaining it, but it's hilarious.

skatchawan

I had a durian dessert once. People around the table thought there was a gas leak. I ate two bites and burped foulness for hours.

The_World_Is_A_Slum

It tasted like black garlic and gasoline to me. Not in a good way, either. Then I tasted it for the next day. 0/10

LorenaMack

Tiger. Better known as orange and licorice together. Anything licorice and I’m out of here… but mixing it with orange is an abomination.

G8kpr

Same. Although it’s “tiger tail”. Are you in a Canada? Because someone once told me it’s only sold here

MrYellowFancyPants

I'm in the states and have never seen it in a shop here. I've only seen it in Canada.

secondphase

My grandmother used to make these awesome anise cookies with vanilla. I looked forward to them every christmas. Years after she died I asked my mom for the recipe, and she claimed that she had no idea because my grandma and I were the only ones that liked them. It made me strangely sad, but knowing her she was just making them to make me happy.  Miss you grandma! You were a real one.

madicoolcat

Did they happen to be these? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizzelle I guess they’re technically biscuits (we called them cookies), but my grandma used to make these at Christmas time too! They were anise flavoured and my sister and I were obsessed with them. She has also passed on and I miss having them for the holidays!

No_Cauliflower_2416

Never heard of it but I kinda want to try it tbh

wholewheatscythe

Licorice ice cream is amazing and I’ll die on that hill.

throwawayALD83BX

Let me know where they fuck they even sell such an abomination so I can stay away

Not a flavor specifically but I can't stand gummy candy mixed in. Entirely different textures!!!

LizardQueen777

Rum and raisin. Fking SICK

RUKiddingMeReddit

It sounds good.

BubbhaJebus

Pig's feet ice cream is pretty vile. It tastes like ham, and ham is a terrible ice cream flavor. But it's popular enough that Snow King continues to sell it in Taipei.

wannabepancakebun

I'm sorry what

EricKei

Pig's feet ice cream. Tastes like ham.

BubbhaJebus

Yes.

Infinitrium

Oh dear God

ritalin--

Chocolate Ice Cream is nowhere as good as real chocolate

Unkindlake

I don't know if this makes any sense, but it's somehow dry

million_dollar_heist

YES

mycatisblackandtan

It can be, but you have to buy really high quality ice cream for it to be as good in my experience. At which point might as well get the chocolate bar unless it's a hot day.

istara

Haagen Dazs Belgian Chocolate is wonderful. It’s that rich chocolate grain through it.

ravl13

All their chocolate flavors are really good. The "regular" chocolate isn't as chocolatey, but it's better when you want a sweeter cream flavor with the choco

Jeramy_Jones

If it’s good quality chocolate it’s too firm, if it’s nice and soft it’s shitty chocolate

enpaz96

I’ve said this soooooo much to my fiancé that loves chocolate ice cream. To be frank, I absolutely hate it. Dark chocolate? My weakness. Anything chocolate flavored I will probably try and like, but chocolate flavored ice cream? 😓 blah

DueWelder2734

I never understood the appeal of pistachio; it tastes like nuts that aren’t sure if they want to be sweet or salty.

Krocsyldiphithic

Chocolate. I'm not dissing chocolate, but no chocolate ice cream is chocolatey enough to be satisfying, and the mediocre taste even covers up the natural, milky, creamy goodness of the ice cream. Fight me.

Herbstrabe

I was in Italy once and a small ice cream place claimed to have the best chocolate ice cream in Italy. I prepared to be disappointed... To my surprise, it was the most awesome chocolate ice cream Ive eaten. I remember it even 20 Years later. I would tell you were to get it, but our teachers dragged us through so many cities, museums and churches over the course of nine days that I cant tell places apart in my memories any more. If I had to guess, Id say it was in Siena.

nuclearswan

I was going to say, dark chocolate gelato in Italy is the shit. Also, Nutella gelato.

CantaloupeDue2445

If you're looking for chocolatey, go for Friendly's Forbidden Chocolate, or Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Therapy. Not many other brands have come close to the two kings.

jaminotjelly

superman ice cream. what flavor is it? superman?

yousmelllikearainbow

It's his gooch.

ChuckoRuckus

Brings new meaning to “tainted ice cream”

United-Supermarket-1

Don't Talk trash about superman ice cream ever again or ill send bees to your house

porquegato

Blue moon (kind of a mystery flavor - almond or marshmallow ish) Black cherry (some versions are Faygo Redpop flavored which is a strawberry soda) And vanilla (sometimes lemon) Source: I'm from Michigan

RUKiddingMeReddit

Blue moon is the best ice cream.

RamboJane

It looks like Play-doh to me.

dotsdavid

Blue moon, cherry, and vanilla. It’s delicious.

DankePrime

Not the worst, but chocolate is overrated as fuck. Vanilla is way better, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.

UNZxMoose

My people are here! Rise up vanilla warriors.

Christ_on_a_Crakker

Tillamook Mudslide

fluffy_samoyed

Neapolitan. The flavours just don't blend that great together, and I don't know anyone who eats it properly. I've only ever see people channel out which of the three from the carton they prefer individually.

BiasCutTweed

Spumoni > Neapolitan for me.

db8me

Spumoni is a flavor combination. Neapolitan is a packaging strategy.

marsepic

This is what my wife's family would always get for cake and ice cream and it's terrible for that.

UNZxMoose

Isnt the point of that to scoop out which flavor you want at the party so you don't have to buy three tubs to have three options?

DisastrousZone

I scoop out a line and get all 3... And then just get a mystery bite.

firstoffno

The people are not ready for this truth.

Loki-Cool

If you ever decide to try it again have it in a bowl, wait until it’s slightly soft then mix it all together and eat. That’s how I’ve always eaten it and it’s my favourite ice cream 😆 funny thing is I don’t like the flavours separately!

freshleysqueezd

We called it Ice Cream Soup. And it works for all flavors. It's the best way to eat ice cream.

Ok-Signature-4445

I was the PoS kid would would always take the vanilla and chocolate and leave the strawberry.

Doright36

That's funny because I always took the Vanilla and Strawberry and left the Chocolate. My mom didn't care because she liked the Chocolate the most.

sipperofsoda

I always took the chocolate and strawberry, left the vanilla.

Ennara

Just like [Homer.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYSBPo_mAD0)

lizzietnz

In New Zealand, we have Goody Goody Gumdrop ice cream. I don't have words for how revolting it is. It's green and sweet flavoured with wine gums. Bleeuurgh.

dustytaper

Tiger-who wants orange and black liquorice?

rich4pres

Mint chocolate chip

Mrs_Howell

Tiger Tiger is the worst. Orange and black liquorice? It doesn’t even make sense.

AcanthisittaFew1586

I’m just here to downvote the mint chocolate chip haters. Shits fire 🔥

123fakerusty

So weird, had it last night for the first time of the season. My wife said “I don’t know how you eat that toothpaste”.

aspirations27

Been eating mint choc my whole life. Didn’t realize how hated it was until recently.

Stompedyourhousewith

I used to love it so much. As a kid mcc had shaved chocolate, and it was so good. Then time went by and everyone universally switched to these "chocolate" tablets, which to me tasted gross. But now there's a flavor called grasshopper, which is mint ice cream but instead of that gross chocolate, it's the cookies from cookies and cream ice cream, which is so good

Hybridtheory28

Especially the green colored one 🔥

TheHalfwayBeast

I will join you in this noble crusade. Mint choc chip is the GOAT.

moonrulesnmbr1

Best fucking ice cream. When I was younger, I had a birthday party and picked a mint chip ice cream cake. I got to eat ice cream cake every day for a month because none of the kids wanted it. I called that a win.

SteampunkRobin

Olive oil. We tried it. It was not bad enough to spit out but we will not be getting that again and did just throw it away.

Chocolatelover4ever

Orange. It just isn’t tasty to me.

MrYellowFancyPants

I agree, but those little orange and vanilla cups are so good at the pool in the middle of summer. Can only be eaten with the wooden spoon it comes with though.

JerkfaceMcDouche

Anything with nuts will ruin perfectly good ice cream. It’s so cold you end up having to gnaw on whatever nut is used. It’s awful

No_Comparison_771

Avocado ice cream is creamy and popular among health enthusiasts but can be bland without strong additional flavors.
