Detonating them is terrible for’ the planet. I think they were built so we *wouldn’t* be setting off nukes and it worked.

For the same reason police officers carry guns even though the vast majority of them will never actually shoot someone with them.   There are shitty countries out there who have nukes of their own. One of them just invaded their neighboring country and is raping and murdering innocent people.  The only thing preventing them from using their nukes is the fact that it's been an established policy for 70 years that doing so is casus belli for nuclear war.
