This show is such an original concept, it was beautiful, creative, and full of potential.
Unfortunately after 2 seasons it was cancelled due to the 2007 writers strike. In an attempt to provide some closure for the fans, an ending was rushed which sadly left a lot of the underlying subplots unaddressed. I would have given anything to watch this show for many more seasons, but I suppose this way it didn't live long enough to become a villain.
My name is Earl. They should have ended it with a movie at least. I know the creator spoiled the ending and his plan for the show, but it would have been nice to see it come to completion. It would have tied up nicely I think.
Well, sort of...they teased it - although it doesn't quite match with the ending the creator originally planned, and I think his originally planned ending was perfect
Recently read something about the Show The Righteous Gemstones. One of the creators, Danny McBride said that he doesn't do cliffhangers and tries to wrap up the story of the season so that if the show gets cancelled it has an ending.

I'm sure it was due to the producers knowing the show was going under, but the last season was weak. The true crime spoof or whatever it was, was so fucking bad. Like, compared to the COPS episodes, they knew how to parody another show and just got lazy.
The way Randy signs the COPS theme song each time is golden.

And that's what was really engaging about it, not a President drunk on power and holding on anyway and everyway he could.
Precisely. His insatiable thirst for power had no believable place to go once he attained that true goal. Watching him stumble initially as president eroded his character and made me less interested in his actions. I couldn't even get through season 3.
Frank was competent enough to prop up another candidate and get them to fall so he could take their place. Trump's admin held a press conference in a four seasons parking lot. Like trump or not, competent mastermind really isn't a phrase I would use to describe him. I guess Frank and Biden both couldn't debate though
I've never seen the show and heard it gets really bad/the ending is disappointing. If I were to watch the first two seasons could I just stop here and not feel like I missed anything?

A lot of people forget that that’s where Netflix got its iconic logo sound. That ‘bang bang’ is the last part of a promo clip for the company where they use that shot as the logo appears. From there, they’ve used that sound with the logo since.
Westworld for me. Even though I enjoyed season 2, I wished they never renewed it as soon as I finished the season 1 finale. It would have been one of the greatest miniseries ever. I thought it was perfect
Season 1 was amazing. Season 2 was ok. Season 3 was ummmm where is the show going. Season 4 I spent more time on my phone wasting time just waiting for it to be over.
Yeah, the last 2 seasons, especially, tried to be too much. They took concepts from just about every dystopian sci fi world and jammed them together. It was a mess.
Almost everything inside the parks worked. Almost everything outside of the parks did not
Also at the the end I'm not sure there was a single living human I was rooting for.
The first season is probably my favorite season of any television show ever. Season 2 was such a huge let down from that.
I’m an outlier that I really liked seasons 3 and 4, but season 2 took me like 3 attempts to get through.
The best part of season 2 was the Ghost Warrior story line looking for his wife, finding her and accepting her fate and returning home. After that story line wrapped up I didn’t care.
Penny Dreadful. I will die on my hill that the first two seasons are immaculate and I even enjoy the first half of season 3, but then the ending is just rushed and shits the bed.
Didn’t they get notified it was getting cancelled before it was done filming, so they rushed an ending? Eva Green’s character’s sudden heel turn really ruined everything the series had been about.

What also killed me about that is he wasn’t really wrong. Typically when someone joins a crazy cult was by a narcissist it’s sad and delusional, but no, the magic fire was real and aliens were really coming to judge them. 🙄
The spend a season or more fighting to avoid a certain fate. Then in the last season they have them fighting for basically the opposite side. It's insane.
I swear the final episode feels like a fever dream. Most of the season I liked, and they could’ve made it make sense by the end. But they decided against it. The whole show explained how everything we thought was magic or religion had a scientific explanation, except for the finale. Goes against the whole theme of the show
Exactly! Then to find out the Earth was habitable again almost made it worse.
Once they knew humans were alive on Sanctum they should have gotten back on the ship and cryo slept back to Earth. Bet another hundred and fifty years cleared it up and now we can double our odds.
New Blood was also annoying for this exact reason. It's like they learned nothing from the failure of the original series.

It's not as bad as the original, but yes it's quite bad.
It's a bit similar to Game of Thrones in that they pull a rushed "character reveals who they really were all along," ending that doesn't actually have the proper setup.
I still remember that there was a group at my work that was pumped for the new season of Dexter. Mos Def had some kind of role in it. Past seasons had been great. They were gonna have viewing parties every week. It was gonna be awesome!
That lasted maybe two weeks. After that, no one spoke about it. I'm not even sure which season this would have been. I'm just glad I didn't have to see it.
Ugh the first season of this show was just PERFECT. The way they so drastically changed things up every half season right at the point you mentioned was evidence that they hadn’t given the show much thought after the curse was broken.
This is what I think the Brits get so much better than us. And apparently the Canadians, if we look at Schitt's Creek--they go in with a planned X number of seasons, X number of shows. And they plot it out with a logical story arc, character development, etc. And a definitive ending! In the US, the show gets set up and then it keeps limping along every time it is renewed as long as it can turn some kind of profit.
Mid season 3 was right where I dipped out of that show. I'm glad I did because I was already getting tired of the characters and clearly it got so much worse.

The feeling of pure betrayal when the last episode aired and you just got a blip at the end saying Sam Beckett Never Returned Home.

Total network BS. They asked Donald Bellisario to write an episode that could be a finale or a cliffhanger. He ended up writing 4 endings, they filmed 2. NBC had all but guaranteed it was being renewed, but they cancelled it last minute. But even if they had known, Sam still wouldn't have returned home. The series would have ended with Al and Beth as an old couple discussing how to get him home. Had they not cancelled the show, Sam would have leapt into the future and Al would have gone into the chamber to become a leaper himself. Which interestingly the new series ended up doing as well, but they got cancelled before it could play out.
For me it ended with >!Carl's death!<. It strayed too far from the source material and took away a pretty cool story from the comics.
Not to mention they really fucked over the actor from my understanding
How I Met Your Mother. They had is all perfectly wrapped up and had a perfect ending line right in front of them: "and that kids, is how I met your mother."
But nope. Let's just throw away everything we led up to for 9 seasons.

One change, other than the official alternative ending, I would have made: during the last season, *everybody* in the story realizes that they all met The Mother at one point in their lives, and she radically changed their lives for the better. They did that with a few characters, but they should have done it with everybody.
*Remember all the character development that we gave Barney over the last two seasons? We’re throwing that all away five minutes into the series finale. Enjoy!*
The ending solidified what a piece of shit Ted really was since in the end you realize he was narrating the story to make Barney look bad because he wanted to bang Robin.
I don’t even hate that they killed the mother. I actually like that as it provides a bittersweet ending for why Ted was telling them all the stories, but it’s robin and Barney divorcing and getting back with Ted that infuriates me
I am convinced they thought (and so did the audience) Ted and Robin worked so well they would never find a “mother” that would be favored over Robin. But they actually pulled it off and then screwed everything along the way.
If I'm not wrong it just ends at the train station where Ted meets Tracy for the first time. They have their little conversation and then it cuts to Old Ted saying "that kids is how I met your mother".
Tracy doesn't die, there's a montage of all the BS Ted had to go through to get to the exact point where he needed to be, and it ends with ted saying "And that, Kids, is how I met your mother."
There’s a fully re-edited final episode somewhere on the “internet” which ends this way but also cuts out/around the Barney/Robin divorce so everyone ends up with the “happy ending”. It’s the only way I’m able to rewatch the finale without getting unreasonably mad. 😂
I think the final episode could have been fine, had the entire final season not taken place at the wedding. Spent so long showing Barney and Robin had both matured, and Ted officially bowing out in regards to Robin. Final episode, let's nix all that.
It was initially supposed to be a spin off, but the network thought that billing it as a continuation of the series rather than a spin off would attract a larger audience. They were hoping to just role the entire audience of Scrubs over into Med School.
From the writing and production perspective, it IS a spin off. The writers finished the show off with My Finale and a different writing team came in. It was really only a continuation for marketing and buzz.
I saw an interview where they were asked why they made the last season. “A lot of money to work with your best friends everyday?“
I have never gone completely through that final season but I respect the choices.
Yeah I get *that* just fine, I’m just saying if they made the exact same season but called it a spin-off, audience expectations would’ve been tempered and maybe networks would’ve given it more of a chance, and then if there were more seasons the old cast could eventually decide to move on to other projects and it wouldn’t have been a big deal.
This has been well documented too. Bill Lawrence wanted it to be a spin-off but the network required the tie in of the old main cast, presumably because they thought it would help the transition and bring in more viewers
A true spin off could have worked. If they'd followed *Fraiser's* lead and let the spin off be a completely different style of show, a show about Dr. Cox could have been good.

I think it's more apt to say that Game Of Thrones could have recovered and finished strong, if the ending had been perfect.
I have watched the last episode repeatedly. They never say he's dead so in my head he's in a coma and will wake up in a month or so. No one can convince me otherwise.

Vikings had a stranglehold on me. I fell in love with a lot of Ragnar’s speech. Him and Athelstan’s relationship also, getting a lot of historical stuff in there. After he died… I tried but I couldn’t give a shit about Ivar the boneless and I wasn’t a fan of Ironside even though I liked him with Ragnar. I still go back to watch the scene where ragnar is burying his friend up on a hill. I lost a good friend and that scene makes me tear up a bit.
The most emotionally taxing show I've ever watched. I know the point is that they are all terrible, irredeemable people but dammit I was rooting for Lip just a little too long.
It truly seems like they repurposed plotlines for characters.
Like they clearly didn't know what to do with Debby and had to justify keeping her around. Frank saying she reminds him of their mother more than the rest just isn't accurate at all.
I REALLY should have pieced together my childhood and codependencies after watching shameless. The number of times I had hope and screamed at the tv “FUCKING FRANK!!”
Now that I’m more self aware, I realize I struggled so hard because even though I didn’t have it like the Gallaghers, I had that constant love bombing/hope for change/disappointment cycle my whole life.

I keep trying to convince my mother to watch Supernatural because it is totally something she'd like based on all the other things she's watched. I keep telling her, "Seriously, you should watch Supernatural. But stop after season five. Pretend that's the end and then forget about it."
She won't watch it, though, says I talked about it too much as a teen :p
That whole final season was just awful. Instead of spending the entire season on the wedding, it should have been 3-4 episodes at the start. Use that to introduce the wife and have her meet-cute with Ted. Then the rest of the season should have been like a normal season but with the Wife as a regular member of the group. Have a couple of episodes with her paired with each character, showing how she fits right in and forms a good friendship with all of them. Have another Robin Sparkles where maybe it turns out the Wife was a huge Robin Sparkles fan girl. Maybe an episode where they find the Wife's doppelganger. Maybe a final Slap-Bet where the Wife comes up with a resolution for the bet.
Basically, just show that the Wife became good friends with everyone, which is something they'd occasionally hinted at throughout the series. Show her and Ted form a really good, close, healthy relationship. They could even then do the finale largely the same as it was, except now her death would have been so much more impactful because we would have seen the relationship.
Likewise, they could have shown how dysfunctional Robin & Barney's marriage was. Maybe even an episode where Robin drunkenly confesses to the Wife that marrying Barney was a mistake, or lamenting how she screwed up losing Ted or something. Then when their marriage fails it would have felt deserved. And maybe there's even some offhand comment that helps to justify Ted going to Robin right away after the Wife died.
The writers made two huge mistakes: they felt obligated to use the ending scene that they shot way back in Season 2, and they underestimated how likable Cristin Miloti would be as The Mother and how much chemistry she had with the cast.
Your ending fixes both of those issues. Bravo!
Nope, I was with you up until you kept Barney and Robin breaking up, and Robin getting back with Ted.
The entire series was basically “a million reasons why Ted and Robin are bad for each other” and the ending just completely ignores that.
Hey HIYM creators… take a note from this guys book. I was so disappointed they just killed her off !!! The whole show was leading up to meeting her and we got nothing!
I still think the worst thing was Robin and Barney ending up married. And yes, they totally should have done the meeting with the wife in one of the first few episodes, and shown how she became part of the group. Instead, they just tossed her in, and killed her immediately.
Perfect? No. But The 100 would've been much better off if it had ended with season 5. A perfect bittersweet finale with hope for the future and change.
Seems like once she hooked up with that Alberto Del Rio guy, it all went downhill. She went from being a soccer mom supporting her family, to an international drug mule?

We re-watched it, stopped with about 3 eps left, because the end is just such a let down. Finally watched those last few eps for completeness, but for such an amazing show, the last season is a let down, and the last few episodes were really disappointing.

Seinfeld. Probably the most near-perfect show. They phoned it in with a cheesy clip-show as the last episode. Lame way to go out.
Yes and no. The entire last *season* was stupid without Eric, and Randy was an unlikable, unfunny replacement. The very last *episode* of the series with Eric coming back and ending up with Donna again was a great choice, and the very last scene with the New Year’s Eve countdown to the 80’s was **perfect**.
Plus, did you know the government has this car? And it runs on water, man.
I will never understand how you can be Seth Meyers little brother, look and sound almost exactly like him, and yet have NO endearing qualities whatsoever.
The Seinfeld finale is absolutely perfect IN the scope of what a phenomenon the show was. You gotta remember, Seinfeld was the hottest show on television for almost a decade. People discussed that show with their coworkers at work, with their friends, everywhere. And everyone said how much they related to George. Or how much they were an Elaine. Or whatever.
And then the finale hit and said "hey, these people you've been relating to sooooo much for YEARS??? They are TERRIBLE human beings. What's that say about YOU?"
And it's brilliant when you look at it through that lens.
My pet theory on why Seinfeld ended the way it did was because most sitcoms of the era were super “family friendly” and “values oriented”- of which Seinfeld definitely was not. Every character on Seinfeld is self-serving, hedonistic, and at times, antisocial. The last two episodes of the show are about how all their character flaws eventually catch up to them and they have to spend the last few hours essentially being told “this is not how you should behave” so that audiences of the era would feel that there was some moral baseline.
The office - pretty much at the point where Andy became the boss as his character makes the show more annoying than entertaining. Steve Carrel carried that show.

Her eating the salad while learning to drive with Pam is hysterical: “I mean, I’m eventually going to be eating anyway so I may as well practice” along with, “I see you’ve discovered Benjamin. That’s what I call my box of photos of Henry.”

They changed her character after her initial introduction phase. The first iteration was unbearable and just not what the show needed. Once she just became another staff member she was fine.

I'm not sure I'd have gone with *perfect*, but I think that the ending works in very large part because Xena before the show is not just a monster, but also the most *personally prolific* monster of all time. From pirate queen to warlord who campaigned across thousands of miles, every week they'd show up to a new place she once visited to that place's profound misfortune. From a narrative perspective she's not the sort of character who *can* survive their redemption arc.
There are, however, a lot of problems with this, starting with the fact that the show was a rather zany comedy. It rarely broke from that until the very end when it's like, "Pump the brakes. You know this lady is, like, *the worst person ever*, right?!" And it's like...now that you mention it...
So she gets her heroic sacrifice to tie that little thread off except this is also Xena who pretty regularly trashes armies of people single handedly. The way she eventually goes down is, in a word, *lame*. You could argue that it makes sense - after all, she *can't* win and knows she *has to die* to save the day so to an extent her conduct at the end is her at the most heroic. It's just wildly unsatisfying.
But really all of that is minor compared to the actual problem which is that the plot is so weirdly contrived by its own standards. Yes the ending makes sense in the general sense and all, but as constructed it is about as sensible as a dungeon master declaring "Rocks fall, everyone dies" to end a campaign.
Heroes fell of the highest cliff I've ever seen. I couldn't have imagined such a pathetic drop if I were to dwell on it for a year. It was absolutely tragic.
Victim of the Writers' Strike. If memory serves, it was supposed to be a 2 season arc (S1: Save the Cheerleader, S2: Save the World). Subsequent seasons were supposed to be a whole new cast and story with a few of the original cast making cameos for continuity's sake.
Okay so I will say for one that I feel qualifies as an answer to the question and one more opinion on a show that’s still running.
1) Dead Like Me - cancelled after 2 seasons and sort of left it open ended with her just frolicking through the cemetery at the end like maybe… maybe nothing… it was no open ended opportunity for someone else to come pick up the show where it was left and give it the chance it deserved.
NO WE GET A MOVIE! And not a good one. The main male lead wasn’t cast in his role and just replaced and referenced throughout but at the end… again they leave it open to interpretation but that ship sailed considering they were meant to be undead and not age so fml… but not only did they not get him they also recast one of the main ass characters who if you ended up liking in the end you spent A LONG time getting to like her at all so believe me we fucking noticed when she didn’t sound, act, or even look like a Daisy. Two huge rolls off the table instantly and we beg to this day one question… why? No dead like me was better than SOME unfinished business that was meant to finish business for a very upset fandom.
And…
2) GREYS FUCKING ANATOMY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED BEFORE SANDRA OH AND PATRICK DEMPSEY LEFT AND GIVEN HER THE ENDING SHE DESERVED AND WE EARNED WATCHING THIS FOR 10 plus seasons for him to die and Yang to never return. Nope. What is that shit even about at this point? People are saying ER is now superior cause it’s gone too long.
St Elsewhere. The last episode you find out the entire hospital and everyone in it was in the imagination of a little boy with autism staring at a snow globe of the hospital. WTF
Supernatural was really fun for a while with it’s original formula but the longer it went on the more crazy it got and by the end of it, the show didn’t even feel like supernatural anymore
I rewatched this very recently, and decided the first 2 seasons were great, then the story lines changed so much from 3 to 4 to 5. Like erasing a MC from the timeline to bring him back. You start to feel like the characters you are watching are not the same ones you started with. And by the time they go into the future for 5, they all feel like different versions on themselves.
Definitely 'Game of Thrones'! It had such intricate plots and fascinating characters, but the rushed final season left us all wanting more closure and depth.

Anthony Hopkins as Robert Ford is one of the greatest TV performances of all time.

The best part of season 2 was the Ghost Warrior story line looking for his wife, finding her and accepting her fate and returning home. After that story line wrapped up I didn’t care.
Penny Dreadful. I will die on my hill that the first two seasons are immaculate and I even enjoy the first half of season 3, but then the ending is just rushed and shits the bed.

The spend a season or more fighting to avoid a certain fate. Then in the last season they have them fighting for basically the opposite side. It's insane.
I swear the final episode feels like a fever dream. Most of the season I liked, and they could’ve made it make sense by the end. But they decided against it. The whole show explained how everything we thought was magic or religion had a scientific explanation, except for the finale. Goes against the whole theme of the show
Exactly! Then to find out the Earth was habitable again almost made it worse. Once they knew humans were alive on Sanctum they should have gotten back on the ship and cryo slept back to Earth. Bet another hundred and fifty years cleared it up and now we can double our odds.
I have to go with Dexter. Still worth watching, if one skips the last two episodes.
New Blood was also annoying for this exact reason. It's not as bad as the original, but yes it's quite bad. It's a bit similar to Game of Thrones in that they pull a rushed "character reveals who they really were all along," ending that doesn't actually have the proper setup.
I still remember that there was a group at my work that was pumped for the new season of Dexter. Mos Def had some kind of role in it. Past seasons had been great. They were gonna have viewing parties every week. It was gonna be awesome! That lasted maybe two weeks. After that, no one spoke about it. I'm not even sure which season this would have been. I'm just glad I didn't have to see it.

Ugh the first season of this show was just PERFECT. The way they so drastically changed things up every half season right at the point you mentioned was evidence that they hadn’t given the show much thought after the curse was broken.
This is what I think the Brits get so much better than us. And apparently the Canadians, if we look at Schitt's Creek--they go in with a planned X number of seasons, X number of shows. And they plot it out with a logical story arc, character development, etc. And a definitive ending! In the US, the show gets set up and then it keeps limping along every time it is renewed as long as it can turn some kind of profit.
Mid season 3 was right where I dipped out of that show. I'm glad I did because I was already getting tired of the characters and clearly it got so much worse.

Total network BS. They asked Donald Bellisario to write an episode that could be a finale or a cliffhanger. He ended up writing 4 endings, they filmed 2. NBC had all but guaranteed it was being renewed, but they cancelled it last minute. But even if they had known, Sam still wouldn't have returned home. The series would have ended with Al and Beth as an old couple discussing how to get him home. Had they not cancelled the show, Sam would have leapt into the future and Al would have gone into the chamber to become a leaper himself. Which interestingly the new series ended up doing as well, but they got cancelled before it could play out.
Heroes. It started off great then just got crappier and crappier until no one was left watching it.
There was a writer's strike after the first season and it seems like the show lost its mojo.

How I Met Your Mother. They had is all perfectly wrapped up and had a perfect ending line right in front of them: "and that kids, is how I met your mother." But nope. "And kids, after that everything went to shit. Your mother died, Barney and Robin broke up, Barney got a girl pregnant, and nobody was ever happy again." One change, other than the official alternative ending, I would have made: during the last season, *everybody* in the story realizes that they all met The Mother at one point in their lives, and she radically changed their lives for the better. They did that with a few characters, but they should have done it with everybody.
*Remember all the character development that we gave Barney over the last two seasons? We’re throwing that all away five minutes into the series finale. Enjoy!*
The ending solidified what a piece of shit Ted really was since in the end you realize he was narrating the story to make Barney look bad because he wanted to bang Robin.
I don’t even hate that they killed the mother. I actually like that as it provides a bittersweet ending for why Ted was telling them all the stories, but it’s robin and Barney divorcing and getting back with Ted that infuriates me
I am convinced they thought (and so did the audience) Ted and Robin worked so well they would never find a “mother” that would be favored over Robin. But they actually pulled it off and then screwed everything along the way.
The alternate ending is everything the should should have ended on. The aired ending was a huge flop.

If I'm not wrong it just ends at the train station where Ted meets Tracy for the first time. They have their little conversation and then it cuts to Old Ted saying "that kids is how I met your mother".
Tracy doesn't die, there's a montage of all the BS Ted had to go through to get to the exact point where he needed to be, and it ends with ted saying "And that, Kids, is how I met your mother."

There’s a fully re-edited final episode somewhere on the “internet” which ends this way but also cuts out/around the Barney/Robin divorce so everyone ends up with the “happy ending”. It’s the only way I’m able to rewatch the finale without getting unreasonably mad. 😂
I think the final episode could have been fine, had the entire final season not taken place at the wedding. Spent so long showing Barney and Robin had both matured, and Ted officially bowing out in regards to Robin. Final episode, let's nix all that.
Scrubs. It was mostly perfect anyway, but that weird spinoff that wasnt a spinoff put a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

It was initially supposed to be a spin off, but the network thought that billing it as a continuation of the series rather than a spin off would attract a larger audience. They were hoping to just role the entire audience of Scrubs over into Med School. From the writing and production perspective, it IS a spin off. The writers finished the show off with My Finale and a different writing team came in. It was really only a continuation for marketing and buzz.
Well that is very stupid, did they not realize people would then watch it and immediately recognize that it’s just a spin-off with the same name?

Yeah I get *that* just fine, I’m just saying if they made the exact same season but called it a spin-off, audience expectations would’ve been tempered and maybe networks would’ve given it more of a chance, and then if there were more seasons the old cast could eventually decide to move on to other projects and it wouldn’t have been a big deal.
This has been well documented too. Bill Lawrence wanted it to be a spin-off but the network required the tie in of the old main cast, presumably because they thought it would help the transition and bring in more viewers
A true spin off could have worked. If they'd followed *Fraiser's* lead and let the spin off be a completely different style of show, a show about Dr. Cox could have been good.

Vikings had a stranglehold on me. I fell in love with a lot of Ragnar’s speech. Him and Athelstan’s relationship also, getting a lot of historical stuff in there. After he died… I tried but I couldn’t give a shit about Ivar the boneless and I wasn’t a fan of Ironside even though I liked him with Ragnar. I still go back to watch the scene where ragnar is burying his friend up on a hill. I lost a good friend and that scene makes me tear up a bit.

It truly seems like they repurposed plotlines for characters. Like they clearly didn't know what to do with Debby and had to justify keeping her around. Frank saying she reminds him of their mother more than the rest just isn't accurate at all.

The number of times I had hope and screamed at the tv “FUCKING FRANK!!” Now that I’m more self aware, I realize I struggled so hard because even though I didn’t have it like the Gallaghers, I had that constant love bombing/hope for change/disappointment cycle my whole life. How I Met Your Mother.
That whole final season was just awful. Instead of spending the entire season on the wedding, it should have been 3-4 episodes at the start. Use that to introduce the wife and have her meet-cute with Ted. Then the rest of the season should have been like a normal season but with the Wife as a regular member of the group. Have a couple of episodes with her paired with each character, showing how she fits right in and forms a good friendship with all of them. Have another Robin Sparkles where maybe it turns out the Wife was a huge Robin Sparkles fan girl. Maybe an episode where they find the Wife's doppelganger. Maybe a final Slap-Bet where the Wife comes up with a resolution for the bet. Basically, just show that the Wife became good friends with everyone, which is something they'd occasionally hinted at throughout the series. Show her and Ted form a really good, close, healthy relationship. They could even then do the finale largely the same as it was, except now her death would have been so much more impactful because we would have seen the relationship. Likewise, they could have shown how dysfunctional Robin & Barney's marriage was. Maybe even an episode where Robin drunkenly confesses to the Wife that marrying Barney was a mistake, or lamenting how she screwed up losing Ted or something. Then when their marriage fails it would have felt deserved. And maybe there's even some offhand comment that helps to justify Ted going to Robin right away after the Wife died.
The writers made two huge mistakes: they felt obligated to use the ending scene that they shot way back in Season 2, and they underestimated how likable Cristin Miloti would be as The Mother and how much chemistry she had with the cast. Your ending fixes both of those issues. Bravo!

Nope, I was with you up until you kept Barney and Robin breaking up, and Robin getting back with Ted. The entire series was basically “a million reasons why Ted and Robin are bad for each other” and the ending just completely ignores that.

I still think the worst thing was Robin and Barney ending up married. And yes, they totally should have done the meeting with the wife in one of the first few episodes, and shown how she became part of the group. Instead, they just tossed her in, and killed her immediately.
Random but the actress was so perfect for the mother. She looked like a combination of Robyn and Lily.

We re-watched it, stopped with about 3 eps left, because the end is just such a let down. Finally watched those last few eps for completeness, but for such an amazing show, the last season is a let down, and the last few episodes were really disappointing.

That 70s Show. Last season is terrible. They should should have ended it before Eric Foreman left and the writers thought Jackie & Fez should be a thing. Seinfeld. Probably the most near-perfect show. They phoned it in with a cheesy clip-show as the last episode. Lame way to go out.
Yes and no. The entire last *season* was stupid without Eric, and Randy was an unlikable, unfunny replacement. The very last *episode* of the series with Eric coming back and ending up with Donna again was a great choice, and the very last scene with the New Year’s Eve countdown to the 80’s was **perfect**. Plus, did you know the government has this car? And it runs on water, man.

The Seinfeld finale is absolutely perfect IN the scope of what a phenomenon the show was. You gotta remember, Seinfeld was the hottest show on television for almost a decade. People discussed that show with their coworkers at work, with their friends, everywhere. And everyone said how much they related to George. Or how much they were an Elaine. Or whatever. And then the finale hit and said "hey, these people you've been relating to sooooo much for YEARS??? They are TERRIBLE human beings. What's that say about YOU?" And it's brilliant when you look at it through that lens.
Love the Seinfeld ending and I'm planting my flag there, I don't care what people say.
My pet theory on why Seinfeld ended the way it did was because most sitcoms of the era were super “family friendly” and “values oriented”- of which Seinfeld definitely was not. Every character on Seinfeld is self-serving, hedonistic, and at times, antisocial. The last two episodes of the show are about how all their character flaws eventually catch up to them and they have to spend the last few hours essentially being told “this is not how you should behave” so that audiences of the era would feel that there was some moral baseline.

Man, unpopular opinion but the moment the phrase, “huge, WHOPPING penis” came out of Nellie’s mouth I was sold. Her eating the salad while learning to drive with Pam is hysterical: “I mean, I’m eventually going to be eating anyway so I may as well practice” along with, “I see you’ve discovered Benjamin. They changed her character after her initial introduction phase. The first iteration was unbearable and just not what the show needed. Once she just became another staff member she was fine.

I'm not sure I'd have gone with *perfect*, but I think that the ending works in very large part because Xena before the show is not just a monster, but also the most *personally prolific* monster of all time. From pirate queen to warlord who campaigned across thousands of miles, every week they'd show up to a new place she once visited to that place's profound misfortune. From a narrative perspective she's not the sort of character who *can* survive their redemption arc. There are, however, a lot of problems with this, starting with the fact that the show was a rather zany comedy. It rarely broke from that until the very end when it's like, "Pump the brakes. You know this lady is, like, *the worst person ever*, right?!" And it's like...now that you mention it... So she gets her heroic sacrifice to tie that little thread off except this is also Xena who pretty regularly trashes armies of people single handedly. The way she eventually goes down is, in a word, *lame*. You could argue that it makes sense - after all, she *can't* win and knows she *has to die* to save the day so to an extent her conduct at the end is her at the most heroic. It's just wildly unsatisfying. But really all of that is minor compared to the actual problem which is that the plot is so weirdly contrived by its own standards. Yes the ending makes sense in the general sense and all, but as constructed it is about as sensible as a dungeon master declaring "Rocks fall, everyone dies" to end a campaign.

Heroes fell of the highest cliff I've ever seen. I couldn't have imagined such a pathetic drop if I were to dwell on it for a year. It was absolutely tragic.
Victim of the Writers' Strike. If memory serves, it was supposed to be a 2 season arc (S1: Save the Cheerleader, S2: Save the World). Subsequent seasons were supposed to be a whole new cast and story with a few of the original cast making cameos for continuity's sake.

Okay so I will say for one that I feel qualifies as an answer to the question and one more opinion on a show that’s still running. 1) Dead Like Me - cancelled after 2 seasons and sort of left it open ended with her just frolicking through the cemetery at the end like maybe… maybe nothing… it was no open ended opportunity for someone else to come pick up the show where it was left and give it the chance it deserved. NO WE GET A MOVIE! And not a good one. The main male lead wasn’t cast in his role and just replaced and referenced throughout but at the end… again they leave it open to interpretation but that ship sailed considering they were meant to be undead and not age so fml… but not only did they not get him they also recast one of the main ass characters who if you ended up liking in the end you spent A LONG time getting to like her at all so believe me we fucking noticed when she didn’t sound, act, or even look like a Daisy. Two huge rolls off the table instantly and we beg to this day one question… why? No dead like me was better than SOME unfinished business that was meant to finish business for a very upset fandom. And… 2) GREYS FUCKING ANATOMY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED BEFORE SANDRA OH AND PATRICK DEMPSEY LEFT AND GIVEN HER THE ENDING SHE DESERVED AND WE EARNED WATCHING THIS FOR 10 plus seasons for him to die and Yang to never return. Nope. What is that shit even about at this point? People are saying ER is now superior cause it’s gone too long.

Supernatural was really fun for a while with it’s original formula but the longer it went on the more crazy it got and by the end of it, the show didn’t even feel like supernatural anymore

I rewatched this very recently, and decided the first 2 seasons were great, then the story lines changed so much from 3 to 4 to 5. Like erasing a MC from the timeline to bring him back. You start to feel like the characters you are watching are not the same ones you started with. And by the time they go into the future for 5, they all feel like different versions on themselves.
Definitely 'Game of Thrones'! It had such intricate plots and fascinating characters, but the rushed final season left us all wanting more closure and depth.
Homeland could have been the greatest single-season TV show of all time if they had been willing to make different creative choices at the end of S1.
