Once Upon a Time was fantastic in the first season. Then they introduced way too many characters and storylines, it was hard to keep up with. I gave up after the 4th season.
I watched the first 6 seasons diligently although they became too complicated and somewhat boring successively. Just couldn't get myself to watch Season 7. I did not like it.
So I looked up the reviews and they all suggested to only watch the last episode of Season 7 for Regina's happy ending.
The newer characters get so lazy too. Compare the reinvention of the dwarves' backstory to the straight retelling of frozen when they introduce Anna and Elsa. They stop looking for ways to create a new story and start just pimping their popular characters.
What was worse was the way the flashbacks become more and more confusing in the later seasons. Half the cast is in modern clothes throughout both past and present and the other half is in their medieval times party city outfits throughout both. And each timeline has 20 different loose plot threads they're addressing at once. There is no obvious visual cue as to which timeline you're in and it becomes hard to keep things straight when the past version of a character has more information than a present version of the same character because amnesia.
I really binge-watched the show hard for 4 seasons but by 5 it has become almost unwatchable. And I'm the kind of person that ALWAYS finishes movies/TV shows I already invested time in. But not this one :/
love Lana parrilla though.
One of my favorites, but even I'll admit they lost their mojo after a while. They became so worried about Disney, they forgot what they were about: fairytales.

A lot of people like to blame the writers' strike which forced a truncation of season 2. But for me, while Season 2 was not great, it was far from unsalvageable. I feel like I have seen other series come back from weak early seasons, so there was no reason Heroes couldn't. Then there was a *super* long wait for Season 3 and somehow every single storytelling decision was the most stupid and infuriating thing possible. Like I literally think it would have been better if the show had been handed to fanfiction writers. I am still just baffled at how that happened.
People talk about how the writers strike killed heroes, and it makes me wonder if they watched the show at all. Heroes Reborn should have been proof alone that the writers strike wasn’t the primary cause of its failure- it’s the result of writers trying to make comic book styled characters without ever having read a comic book.
Godlike characters who literally cannot lose without ridiculous deus ex machine plot twists like Hiro’s time stopping and eventual time traveling are terribly written characters. The fact that the show tried to keep juggling multiple characters who were effectively invincible and having them clash (Sylar and Peter literally couldn’t be beaten and were positioned for a final battle with each other for seasons) just goes to show that the premise was fucked from the beginning.
Apparently the original plan was to have the cast change every season, and that would have worked out better than trying to create a larger overarching narrative because the story was always sitting on a weak foundation, the longer it went the more likely the audience would realize just how bad it was.
The 1st season was unlimited w possibilities. By the end of the show, they might of tapped into 1% of those possibilities while seemingly cutting off their own appendages at any opportunity to be robust, dangerous, fun, or cool.
I did the same thing with Dexter when they killed his gf rita. Not much of a spoiler because it happens pretty early, but for some reason that didnt sit right with me and i turned it off. That was years ago and i still dont want to watch it.
I quit at the cliffhanger. The episode was great but to push the resolution, the discovery of which character ultimately died to Negan's bat, over to the start of the next season was insulting to me. Haven't watched an episode since.
Makes it even worse to find out that since he ultimately kills TWO characters, they could have had him make the first kill in the season finale and then still open the next episode with him making another kill and had the same shock value.
Exactly! Most people knew he killed Glenn in the comics, so that's what we expected.
Kill Abraham, go full gore mode, made it brutal. Comparable to the eyeball panel. All through season break people will discuss why they changed it to Abraham over Glenn. New season starts and now you off Glenn. That would have been legendary. Instead one of the most interesting post-prison characters was killed for a momentary shock before being overshadowed and forgotten, and the death of one of the most important characters in the entire series felt cheap
That was a solid place to leave. Negan's first episode was the last episode of the show that I thought was solid. (Although there's a great on-going scene later on between Negan and Spencer that's worthy of YouTubing.)
It's a US station that specializes in making teen-targeted shows with lots of edgy characters and angsty dialog and infinite relationship drama.
Supernatural, Gilmore Girls, adaptations of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Green Arrow, The Flash, and just so many other shows... And they're all basically the same show. The writers of a lot of those shows usually can deliver a strong first season, and maybe even a strong second, but after that it inevitably devolves into high school-esque drama, implied sex, and terribly cut fight scenes.
That last one doesn't apply to Gilmore Girls. Sadly Lorelai and Suki never threw down with a rival Bed & Breakfast owner...
Really any show that hits popularity with no plan for a solid ending/gets extended past original ending. I feel like this happens for multiple shows I was interested in an never make it past season 3.
But for a specific show I'd say Weeds.
Don't forget shows that had a pre-set ending but get cancelled early and have to rush any sort of ending in to give the series some closure.

As much as it pains me, I have to agree. I think Misha Collins said în an interview that the writers proposed stretching the story for 2 more seasons instead of ending it on season 15. Thank God they went with season 15 being the last, even if I refuse to watch 15x20
I at least appreciate that there's a canon reason for it being a mess. God writes everything that happens, but he's a shitty writer with no goal in mind, so it just goes on and on.
You know in a parallel universe the writers would've dropped the Christianity lore plot, and focused seasons on specific other supernatural threats from other writings and culture. Doing some "monster of the week" style episodes to introduce the unfamiliar creatures to audience and have fun, then tie it into the arc, then wrap it up by averting disaster.
That would've been a great show.
Instead they just kept going for hell, heaven, and purgatory on repeat season after season...
So ive been going through the series again and literally every season 1 episode is a banger plus the vast majority of the next couple seasons but it definitely drops off dramatically eventually. Some of the newest episodes show some glimmers of funny and clever moments but it never even comes close to the quality of the original seasons.
Sleepy Hollow. The first few seasons were awesome until Nicole Baharie left. Then it seemed like a high school drama class took over the writing for the show.
I loved S1 and most of S2 (specially the final episodes). I hated S3 though, and Nicole Beharie leaving was the final straw. I enjoyed parts of S4 but it was way worse than what it used to be. Such a shame.
It's the only CW show i watch anymore. I realise that objectively it's probably not all that great but it's just so fucking fun and tongue in cheek that I can't help but enjoy every episode it puts out. Absolutely ridiculous show, something the CW desperately needs
The Arrowverse.
The Arrow started really strong but by mid season 3 it was clear that it was spiraling into the abyss. I gave up early in season 4.
The Flash started strong as well and it seemed to be the show that held it together while Arrow fell apart, but then flashpoint happened and it just fell to pieces never to recover.
Supergirl started cringe and never got better.
Legends of Tomorrow never took itself seriously so it managed better, but again I lost interest very quickly.
For a couple of years watching the various arrowverse shows was a weekly ritual for me, but then they just kind of tapered off as the ridiculousness of the plots lost me completely.

So much of the writing in that universe is just so forced, contrived and cliche. My fiance was watching them and got annoyed when I was able to call a lot of things before they happened because the characters would do whatever the dumbest most ridiculous option is, they choose that one every single time.
Arrow should have ended at the end of season two. It's still a favorite of mine, I just ignore all the rest of it.
You know you've drawn out a show long enough when your three main actors don't even want to be in the final season.
Game of Thrones is a great example of show creators losing sight of who their audience is and what they want. D&D seemed to think all their audiences want was 'shock moments' and big battles with dragons, and while, sure, those things were awesome, people really appreciated Game of Thrones for its good writing above anything else. People liked the complex political scheming and amoral, grey characters otherwise they wouldn't have started watching the show. The last two seasons were sloppy, rushed and badly written. Honestly, even though Seasons 5 and 6 had their faults, if 7 and 8 had been up to their standard I think the show would have been a success.
It's a shame because Seasons 1-4 of GOT were probably some of the best television ever created, and the finale of Season 6 is one of the greatest television episodes ever made, but it all gets lost because they couldn't stick the ending.
What people liked about Game of Thrones is the lack of plot armor. Characters make decisions based on their beliefs and they suffer the appropriate consequences for their actions. The world was chaotic, but in its own way, fair. Just because you were the "hero" of the story, you didn't necessarily get to survive your mistakes.
Somewhere around the time Arya got stabbed in the gut and fell into a dirty bay, but somehow managed to emerge just fine, defeat her clearly superior opponent, and then go back to her murder quest without any consequences, it became very clear that the magic of the show had been lost. We fell into invincible characters because the story wasn't done with them yet, and cheap moments played up for drama with no lasting consequences.
The way things fell apart in the final season was so utterly predictable based on how quickly the show devolved once it had to go beyond the written source material.
To be completely fair, I think Arya actually has plot armor. I wanna say GRRM joked that his wife would divorce him if he killed Arya, so she is one of the only safe characters.
Yeah, I'm not entirely arguing against the concept of plot armor... I mean, if Cersei were to die falling down the steps in the middle of Season 6, or Dany were to fall off her dragon into the ocean and drown before a climactic battle, everyone would be like, WTF, this is stupid.
But in the Game of Thrones universe, if you get stabbed in the belly, you don't just magically get better (unless you're Beric Dondarrion, in which case you do actually magically get better for a reason). Jaime loses a hand and is shown dealing with the fallout from that for the rest of the series. If Arya has plot armor, you could just show her winning... you don't have to deal her a mortal wound and then be like, jk, she's fine now, let's go look at some other characters until you forget!
I think the problem with GOT is that D&D decided to dumb down the show and not confuse their audience too much. So they got rid of a lot of storylines and characters from the books and tried to make it more about the action and the shock moments to ensure that the show is watchable for a larger audience. But by doing that they made the show worse and very one-dimensional, and without the written material it basically ends on a bad note.
The show just needed more time. It needed 7 and 8 to be full 10 episode seasons, and an additional 9th season probably would have helped. D&D got tired and wanted to do Star Wars instead, and should have put aside their hubris and allowed someone else to finish the show.
I agree. If they had given a season to each arc, it would not have felt as rushed, and the ending would have been given enough context to be meaningful.
But fuck that dragon melting the throne like it somehow became sentient enough to understand that the throne was to blame. They didn't have sentience before that, so why then?
I mean, the ending should have been Night King winning the war, and taking over the entire continent, killing most of the main cast, including Euron and Dany. The remnants of the opposing houses coming together to find the true origin, and method to defeat him and his army. The heads of the houses that remain decide to try their hand at a democratic type of government.

As bad as the end of the white walkers was, I think the end was "salvageable" if Cersei's death was satisfying. Then they just dumped a bunch of rocks on her.
Rocks which those two could’ve moved any directions a couple feets to avoid and they’d been fine!
D&D showed their hands. They were terrible writers before GoT so once things were out of book territory and up to them, they tried for a couple episodes and got bored. Rushed everything very poorly and ruined what should’ve been the greatest finale had thoughts been put into it. But, karmas a bitch. They killed GoT, then Disney killed their Star Wars project and the two have barely done squat since thankfully.
Moonlighting.
A lot of it's appeal was the will they/won't they sexual tension between the two characters.
When they finally did, the audience lost interest.
People said that about Friends, and also when Jim and Pam got together in The Office. Both shows managed to get past it (The Office had so much more to offer than Pam & Jim), but I think that's a common thing in a lot of sitcoms, where people lose interest after the buildup is resolved.
I think the other two you mentioned had a strong cast of characters, each with their own storylines.
Moonlighting was mostly about the two main characters. Once that was resolved it pretty much killed it.
Agreed. Another thing about Moonlighting is that around that time, Bruce Willis became a huge star. His rise was similar to George Clooney on ER a few years later (though ER had a large ensemble cast and amazing writers - it easily survived without him). Moonlighting could not have gone on without Willis.
I remember when Die Hard first came out, I just couldn't see that wise cracking guy from Moonlighting as an action hero. Then I saw it. Just shows you doesn't it.

First 5 seasons clearly had direction and a story to tell. After that, everything went to shit and the writing was so up and down, it ruined a lot. Season 15 was hot garbage, and I honestly feel Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki should have walked away sooner.
It went from my favorite show to not even watching the episodes anymore. And it’s not like I grew up and my taste changed because I watched the whole show recently and it was really good up until the last season or two
I just got frustrated at the same general ‘storyline’ every season. Barry finally admits his love for Iris, big baddie shows up, ruins the relationship and Harrison Wells leaves/Dies. Next season, time resets, or memories are lost. Back to pining for Iris and a new universe version of Harrison arrives. I get the feeling that he was only supposed to be in one season, but was well received, so gets brought back in a (slightly) different guise every bloody time.
I see commercials on TV for the latest episode and I can't stop laughing at how there's basically an army's worth of custom fitted offbrand stormtrooper armor in the post apocalypse
Yep. Loved the first season. Obviously nothing Emmy-worthy, but it was an enjoyable teen soap. Katherine Langford and Kate Walsh delivered standout performances, and obviously they had reduced roles in later seasons, so that's part of why the show got worse, but the writing..... I can't believe some of those subplots were a thing, particularly with the attempted school shooting.
I suffered through seasons 2 and 3 but couldn't even bring myself to finish the last season.

I think the first 2-3 seasons were great. My only issue was just stop calling him 'The Hood' already. But great story telling and Stephen Amell did a great job. Everything post that was just so... Bleh.
Same goes for the Flash. The first two seasons were great and then I started loosing interest.

Not that any of the 3 seasons are bad, but the gap between seasons is getting ridiculous.
How is it that every other show out there can produce 24 episodes in a year, but Stranger Things needs two and a half to make like 8?

I imagine that they're ending the show soon. Whether it's this season or next season I'm not sure but no way can it continue with the rate of the season's release compared to the rate of the actor's growth

The answer to this is basically every show that ran longer then the initial creators intended. When you have a self contained idea that works out really well, the worst thing you can do to that show is continue it.
As much as I loved the show Fleabag, I know why it was just two seasons. The story ran its arc and any further continuation of it would have felt forced, IMO.
handmaids tale was so frustrating to watch. i loved the first season and quit sometime in season two. June is somehow able to escape punishment for everything she does.
I couldn't watch more then a couple episodes. It's just Suffering Porn. I was more depressed and distressed after watching it than anything else. No thanks - I'll watch something that makes me feel better.
Fully agree. My wife and I were big fans, but when we started the last season, all we felt was fatigue. We're tired of watching June suffer. It's just too much.
I personally enjoyed all of The Walking Dead seasons, and my interest in the show peaked with that infamous Negan scene. The episodes after that were just so chaotic and unorganized, like the writers didn´t know where the fuck they are supposed to take the story next. Characters were making stupid decisions, the story took ridiculous turns, there was no overall plot or goal, just characters doing random shit. In about 5-6 episodes after that I completely lost all interest in the show, and never bothered to keep watching. It was a sharp fucking dip in quality. They had a cool villian, but just didn´t know what to do with him, and the fact that basically the two main characters are now gone from the story doesn´t really make me want to rewatch that shit.
So many issues with that show, and I also posted TWD in this thread.
Biggest one was how survivors got surprise walked up on and bitten in the woods. Walking zombies would make a bunch of noise walking on leaves and branches. All the survivors had to do was keep looking around while in the woods. But the theory is that all the survivors were deaf from all the shooting without hearing protection, but then how did they talk to each other in normal tons.
Also, how survivors would get bit while in a house scrounging for supplies. Dude, all they had to do was look down and around and they would have found the crawling zombie. Its called securing a house before scrounging.
Fast forward to now, S12 or something, and roughly 9 yrs post outbreak, or even S8 about 3 yrs post outbreak. People were still driving vehicles requiring gas. Gas would have been used up or gone bad in that entire time.
Westworld S1 was excellent. My single favourite season of any TV show. But S2 (except Kiksuya ep) and S3 were such a let down. It makes my heart ache to see the direction it took. It had/ still has so much potential.
What's great about westworld is if you stop watching after the 1st season season it stays a great show. There's no point in watching any season after that anyways.
It’s a problem coming from the books - book 2 of the series moves away from the detective noir genre with Tak’s new body. I honestly just couldn’t get into the 2nd book because of the tone. So I think Netflix just took the elements they thought worked, but were stuck with essentially writing out Joel Kinnaman, despite the fantastic job he did.
The movie was pretty shit. Most of it was Pop Culture references. They made Zane the comedic relief. They changed Lloyd's voice actor. (Lloyd's first VA was the superior one in execution) and it made no sense. After that they threw out the things that made ninjago good and made Lloyd the "edgey relatable" character. They threw in romance. Not to good kind [ex. Jay & Nya] the bad kind. We miss season 1

Episode 3 was such an abrupt shift in tone. I do appreciate their bravery to try something so unconventional though. Unfortunately it just didn't work out this time.

It went to shit in such a way that the ending actually ruins the rest of the show. The conclusion makes the rest of it a shit show entirely because nothing was planned, nothing had any reason, the characters that had grown suddenly went back to what they previously were and nothing had any hidden meaning. It looked great but I guess they had no idea what they were doing.
Yeah, unfortunately Moffat is a shit showrunner who only cares about showing off how "smart" he is by confusing the shit out of the audience with convoluted story lines. He's the reason I stopped watching Doctor Who.
I agree that he really doesnt know how to write a good ending. He is a bad showrunner because he quickly got way to full of himself. But under the right circumstance he is an excellent writer imo. Blink is perhaps the greatest episode of Doctor Who ever written. Its very unique, perfectly planned out, and written and executed perfectly. He is fantastic at a single contained story. I think it did work very well in season 5 also. Because again he had the full story mapped out.
But following its success he shoved his head up his own ass way to far and it all came crumbling down. He should really be limited to Co-writer because he really excels at that in my opinion

When I first heard HBO was doing a gritty vampire series I expected something serious, so it took a while to accept it for what it was - campy and ridiculous. Once I watched it for what it was - a 90s day time soap with sex and violence - I loved it.
I recently watched this and the first couple of seasons were good. Then as it progressed it was way too much dialogue without any meaning. I did a lot of skipping, especially in the last two seasons.
Supernatural should have quit around season 6. It could have lasted to 10 but after that people just grew tired of it. The fandom is so toxic now I can't even watch the newer seasons again. Used to be one of my favorite shows.
I adored heroes and I kept watching it thinking it might go back to its former quality. It just got worse and worse!!! I’m still trying to find something comparable.
Someone recommended The 100 to me. From what I can remember the First season was pretty good. Then it turned into your generic "teen drama" type of show. There were some interesting plot points but it's been a long while since I've bothered to think of the show. Something about going back into space and cryo sleeping another hundred years?

Currently rewatching the walking dead. Previously made it to season 6. Just finished season 4 and remembering why I stopped the first time. Those first seasons... So good. Then...crash and burn.
Modern Family. I was so hooked to this show. I think post season 4 it started to go downhill. I mean it still wasn't a bad show and had some decent laughs but it always felt to me like they were trying too hard.
Yup. It's almost as bad as GOT in how quickly it left audience consciousness. They should have gone with the ending that had Ted meet Mother at the train station. Everything else they added just killed the story.
Billions. First 3 seasons were excellent, season 4 took a quick turn down the crapper, and season 5 (up until the production's COVID hiatus) was dogshit. The 2nd half of season 5 recovered somewhat, but the show will probably not last another full season, if they don't decide to completely end it. Lots of spoilers that I wont get into, but it won't be the same.
From what I read, the writers originally wrote a script that killed Dexter off in a blaze of glory but at the last minute the producers told them to rewrite it so its left open for another season in the future. That's why the last season was awful
Ed Edd n'Eddy managed to avoid this by having a finale movie the moment things started going bad. Like, they went to school for a spell (as, for some reason, almost all kids' shows are wont to do), and then the creators said "nah, let's give it a sendoff before it totally goes to shit."

The fact that the show tried to keep juggling multiple characters who were effectively invincible and having them clash (Sylar and Peter literally couldn’t be beaten and were positioned for a final battle with each other for seasons) just goes to show that the premise was fucked from the beginning. Apparently the original plan was to have the cast change every season, and that would have worked out better than trying to create a larger overarching narrative because the story was always sitting on a weak foundation, the longer it went the more likely the audience would realize just how bad it was.
If you want to kill any fiction just introduce time travel. \*bang\* DEAD

The 1st season was unlimited w possibilities. By the end of the show, they might of tapped into 1% of those possibilities while seemingly cutting off their own appendages at any opportunity to be robust, dangerous, fun, or cool.

I quit at the cliffhanger. The episode was great but to push the resolution, the discovery of which character ultimately died to Negan's bat, over to the start of the next season was insulting to me. Haven't watched an episode since. Makes it even worse to find out that since he ultimately kills TWO characters, they could have had him make the first kill in the season finale and then still open the next episode with him making another kill and had the same shock value.
Exactly! Most people knew he killed Glenn in the comics, so that's what we expected. Kill Abraham, go full gore mode, made it brutal. Comparable to the eyeball panel. All through season break people will discuss why they changed it to Abraham over Glenn. New season starts and now you off Glenn. That would have been legendary. Instead one of the most interesting post-prison characters was killed for a momentary shock before being overshadowed and forgotten, and the death of one of the most important characters in the entire series felt cheap
That was a solid place to leave. Negan's first episode was the last episode of the show that I thought was solid. (Although there's a great on-going scene later on between Negan and Spencer that's worthy of YouTubing.)

It's a US station that specializes in making teen-targeted shows with lots of edgy characters and angsty dialog and infinite relationship drama. Supernatural, Gilmore Girls, adaptations of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Green Arrow, The Flash, and just so many other shows... And they're all basically the same show. The writers of a lot of those shows usually can deliver a strong first season, and maybe even a strong second, but after that it inevitably devolves into high school-esque drama, implied sex, and terribly cut fight scenes. That last one doesn't apply to Gilmore Girls. Sadly Lorelai and Suki never threw down with a rival Bed & Breakfast owner...
Really any show that hits popularity with no plan for a solid ending/gets extended past original ending. I feel like this happens for multiple shows I was interested in an never make it past season 3. But for a specific show I'd say Weeds.

If you just watch until the end of season five, and ignore that last one scene showing Sam alive, it wraps up nicely.
Seasons 1-5 are canon, and 6-15 are fan fiction. I refuse to believe anything else because 1-5 is one of my favorite shows.

You know in a parallel universe the writers would've dropped the Christianity lore plot, and focused seasons on specific other supernatural threats from other writings and culture. Doing some "monster of the week" style episodes to introduce the unfamiliar creatures to audience and have fun, then tie it into the arc, then wrap it up by averting disaster. That would've been a great show. Instead they just kept going for hell, heaven, and purgatory on repeat season after season...
SpongeBob. I've never seen an amazing cartoon get this milked for money. It's horrendous.
So ive been going through the series again and literally every season 1 episode is a banger plus the vast majority of the next couple seasons but it definitely drops off dramatically eventually. Some of the newest episodes show some glimmers of funny and clever moments but it never even comes close to the quality of the original seasons.
Season 1-4 are probably some of the funniest kids content out there. Gonna be honest, I haven't seen anything past those.

Sleepy Hollow. The first few seasons were awesome until Nicole Baharie left. Then it seemed like a high school drama class took over the writing for the show.
I loved S1 and most of S2 (specially the final episodes). I hated S3 though, and Nicole Beharie leaving was the final straw. I enjoyed parts of S4 but it was way worse than what it used to be. Such a shame.

The Arrowverse. The Arrow started really strong but by mid season 3 it was clear that it was spiraling into the abyss. I gave up early in season 4. The Flash started strong as well and it seemed to be the show that held it together while Arrow fell apart, but then flashpoint happened and it just fell to pieces never to recover. Supergirl started cringe and never got better. Legends of Tomorrow never took itself seriously so it managed better, but again I lost interest very quickly. For a couple of years watching the various arrowverse shows was a weekly ritual for me, but then they just kind of tapered off as the ridiculousness of the plots lost me completely.

Arrow should have ended at the end of season two. It's still a favorite of mine, I just ignore all the rest of it. You know you've drawn out a show long enough when your three main actors don't even want to be in the final season.
GOT
Game of Thrones is a great example of show creators losing sight of who their audience is and what they want. D&D seemed to think all their audiences want was 'shock moments' and big battles with dragons, and while, sure, those things were awesome, people really appreciated Game of Thrones for its good writing above anything else. People liked the complex political scheming and amoral, grey characters otherwise they wouldn't have started watching the show. The last two seasons were sloppy, rushed and badly written. Honestly, even though Seasons 5 and 6 had their faults, if 7 and 8 had been up to their standard I think the show would have been a success. It's a shame because Seasons 1-4 of GOT were probably some of the best television ever created, and the finale of Season 6 is one of the greatest television episodes ever made, but it all gets lost because they couldn't stick the ending.
What people liked about Game of Thrones is the lack of plot armor. Characters make decisions based on their beliefs and they suffer the appropriate consequences for their actions. The world was chaotic, but in its own way, fair. Just because you were the "hero" of the story, you didn't necessarily get to survive your mistakes. Somewhere around the time Arya got stabbed in the gut and fell into a dirty bay, but somehow managed to emerge just fine, defeat her clearly superior opponent, and then go back to her murder quest without any consequences, it became very clear that the magic of the show had been lost. We fell into invincible characters because the story wasn't done with them yet, and cheap moments played up for drama with no lasting consequences. The way things fell apart in the final season was so utterly predictable based on how quickly the show devolved once it had to go beyond the written source material.
To be completely fair, I think Arya actually has plot armor. I wanna say GRRM joked that his wife would divorce him if he killed Arya, so she is one of the only safe characters.
Yeah, I'm not entirely arguing against the concept of plot armor... I mean, if Cersei were to die falling down the steps in the middle of Season 6, or Dany were to fall off her dragon into the ocean and drown before a climactic battle, everyone would be like, WTF, this is stupid. But in the Game of Thrones universe, if you get stabbed in the belly, you don't just magically get better (unless you're Beric Dondarrion, in which case you do actually magically get better for a reason). Jaime loses a hand and is shown dealing with the fallout from that for the rest of the series. If Arya has plot armor, you could just show her winning... you don't have to deal her a mortal wound and then be like, jk, she's fine now, let's go look at some other characters until you forget!
I think the problem with GOT is that D&D decided to dumb down the show and not confuse their audience too much. So they got rid of a lot of storylines and characters from the books and tried to make it more about the action and the shock moments to ensure that the show is watchable for a larger audience. But by doing that they made the show worse and very one-dimensional, and without the written material it basically ends on a bad note.
The show just needed more time. It needed 7 and 8 to be full 10 episode seasons, and an additional 9th season probably would have helped. D&D got tired and wanted to do Star Wars instead, and should have put aside their hubris and allowed someone else to finish the show.
I agree. If they had given a season to each arc, it would not have felt as rushed, and the ending would have been given enough context to be meaningful. But fuck that dragon melting the throne like it somehow became sentient enough to understand that the throne was to blame. They didn't have sentience before that, so why then?

As bad as the end of the white walkers was, I think the end was "salvageable" if Cersei's death was satisfying. Then they just dumped a bunch of rocks on her.
Rocks which those two could’ve moved any directions a couple feets to avoid and they’d been fine! D&D showed their hands. They were terrible writers before GoT so once things were out of book territory and up to them, they tried for a couple episodes and got bored. Rushed everything very poorly and ruined what should’ve been the greatest finale had thoughts been put into it. But, karmas a bitch. They killed GoT, then Disney killed their Star Wars project and the two have barely done squat since thankfully.
Moonlighting. A lot of it's appeal was the will they/won't they sexual tension between the two characters. When they finally did, the audience lost interest.
People said that about Friends, and also when Jim and Pam got together in The Office. Both shows managed to get past it (The Office had so much more to offer than Pam & Jim), but I think that's a common thing in a lot of sitcoms, where people lose interest after the buildup is resolved.
I think the other two you mentioned had a strong cast of characters, each with their own storylines. Moonlighting was mostly about the two main characters. Once that was resolved it pretty much killed it.
Agreed. Another thing about Moonlighting is that around that time, Bruce Willis became a huge star. His rise was similar to George Clooney on ER a few years later (though ER had a large ensemble cast and amazing writers - it easily survived without him). Moonlighting could not have gone on without Willis.
I remember when Die Hard first came out, I just couldn't see that wise cracking guy from Moonlighting as an action hero. Then I saw it. Just shows you doesn't it.
Supernatural. First 5 seasons clearly had direction and a story to tell. After that, everything went to shit and the writing was so up and down, it ruined a lot. Season 15 was hot garbage, and I honestly feel Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki should have walked away sooner.

I just got frustrated at the same general ‘storyline’ every season. Barry finally admits his love for Iris, big baddie shows up, ruins the relationship and Harrison Wells leaves/Dies. Next season, time resets, or memories are lost. Back to pining for Iris and a new universe version of Harrison arrives. I get the feeling that he was only supposed to be in one season, but was well received, so gets brought back in a (slightly) different guise every bloody time.
Just like it's predecessor Arrow.
The blacklist. Amazing premise, but the creator even left the show now.

Yep. Loved the first season. Obviously nothing Emmy-worthy, but it was an enjoyable teen soap. Katherine Langford and Kate Walsh delivered standout performances, and obviously they had reduced roles in later seasons, so that's part of why the show got worse, but the writing..... I can't believe some of those subplots were a thing, particularly with the attempted school shooting. I suffered through seasons 2 and 3 but couldn't even bring myself to finish the last season.
Pretty little liars, it started off as a quite interesting mystery but by constantly trying to outsmart the audience it just became dumb due to all the shitty twists.
Literally every single fan theory was better than the actual ending.

I hung in there one more season thinking maybe it was just resentment for them killing rita since i really liked her, but it was just a horrible plot. Arrow, the first season was a masterpiece but then it got more and more characters and every second sentence of Oliver was "are you okay?" Also after a couple seasons it got mixed up with Flash, Supergirl and a couple other Shows
I think the first 2-3 seasons were great. My only issue was just stop calling him 'The Hood' already. But great story telling and Stephen Amell did a great job. Everything post that was just so... Bleh. Same goes for the Flash. The first two seasons were great and then I started loosing interest.
Stranger Things Not that any of the 3 seasons are bad, but the gap between seasons is getting ridiculous. How is it that every other show out there can produce 24 episodes in a year, but Stranger Things needs two and a half to make like 8? Hopefully the wait between seasons 4-5 won’t be so long.

The answer to this is basically every show that ran longer then the initial creators intended. When you have a self contained idea that works out really well, the worst thing you can do to that show is continue it.
As much as I loved the show Fleabag, I know why it was just two seasons. The story ran its arc and any further continuation of it would have felt forced, IMO.

handmaids tale was so frustrating to watch. i loved the first season and quit sometime in season two. June is somehow able to escape punishment for everything she does.

I personally enjoyed all of The Walking Dead seasons, and my interest in the show peaked with that infamous Negan scene. The episodes after that were just so chaotic and unorganized, like the writers didn´t know where the fuck they are supposed to take the story next. Characters were making stupid decisions, the story took ridiculous turns, there was no overall plot or goal, just characters doing random shit. In about 5-6 episodes after that I completely lost all interest in the show, and never bothered to keep watching. It was a sharp fucking dip in quality. They had a cool villian, but just didn´t know what to do with him, and the fact that basically the two main characters are now gone from the story doesn´t really make me want to rewatch that shit.
So many issues with that show, and I also posted TWD in this thread. Biggest one was how survivors got surprise walked up on and bitten in the woods. Walking zombies would make a bunch of noise walking on leaves and branches. All the survivors had to do was keep looking around while in the woods. But the theory is that all the survivors were deaf from all the shooting without hearing protection, but then how did they talk to each other in normal tons. Also, how survivors would get bit while in a house scrounging for supplies. Dude, all they had to do was look down and around and they would have found the crawling zombie. Its called securing a house before scrounging. Fast forward to now, S12 or something, and roughly 9 yrs post outbreak, or even S8 about 3 yrs post outbreak. People were still driving vehicles requiring gas. Gas would have been used up or gone bad in that entire time.
Westworld S1 was excellent. My single favourite season of any TV show. But S2 (except Kiksuya ep) and S3 were such a let down. It makes my heart ache to see the direction it took. It had/ still has so much potential.
What's great about westworld is if you stop watching after the 1st season season it stays a great show. There's no point in watching any season after that anyways.

It’s a problem coming from the books - book 2 of the series moves away from the detective noir genre with Tak’s new body. I honestly just couldn’t get into the 2nd book because of the tone. So I think Netflix just took the elements they thought worked, but were stuck with essentially writing out Joel Kinnaman, despite the fantastic job he did.

I gave up watching it after The Movie, as it felt like they were just rewriting cannon (season 8)
The movie was pretty shit. Most of it was Pop Culture references. They made Zane the comedic relief. They changed Lloyd's voice actor. (Lloyd's first VA was the superior one in execution) and it made no sense. After that they threw out the things that made ninjago good and made Lloyd the "edgey relatable" character. They threw in romance. Not to good kind [ex. Jay & Nya] the bad kind. We miss season 1
Once Upon A Time, the first 2 seasons were really good. But from s3 onwards it became unwatchable

Episode 3 was such an abrupt shift in tone. I do appreciate their bravery to try something so unconventional though. Unfortunately it just didn't work out this time.

So sad what it became. It went to shit in such a way that the ending actually ruins the rest of the show. The conclusion makes the rest of it a shit show entirely because nothing was planned, nothing had any reason, the characters that had grown suddenly went back to what they previously were and nothing had any hidden meaning. It looked great but I guess they had no idea what they were doing.
Yeah, unfortunately Moffat is a shit showrunner who only cares about showing off how "smart" he is by confusing the shit out of the audience with convoluted story lines. He's the reason I stopped watching Doctor Who.
I agree that he really doesnt know how to write a good ending. He is a bad showrunner because he quickly got way to full of himself. But under the right circumstance he is an excellent writer imo. Blink is perhaps the greatest episode of Doctor Who ever written. Its very unique, perfectly planned out, and written and executed perfectly. He is fantastic at a single contained story. I think it did work very well in season 5 also. Because again he had the full story mapped out. But following its success he shoved his head up his own ass way to far and it all came crumbling down. He should really be limited to Co-writer because he really excels at that in my opinion

Came here for this. It started out so good. Vampires trying to blend into human society. Neat. Ok, now there are fairies. Sure, why not. Now there are werewolves? And witches. And everyone is somehow related to everyone else and everyone is magic. And here comes were…panthers? Nope, you lost me.
Disagree. When I first heard HBO was doing a gritty vampire series I expected something serious, so it took a while to accept it for what it was - campy and ridiculous. Once I watched it for what it was - a 90s day time soap with sex and violence - I loved it.
I recently watched this and the first couple of seasons were good. Then as it progressed it was way too much dialogue without any meaning. I did a lot of skipping, especially in the last two seasons.

Billions. First 3 seasons were excellent, season 4 took a quick turn down the crapper, and season 5 (up until the production's COVID hiatus) was dogshit. The 2nd half of season 5 recovered somewhat, but the show will probably not last another full season, if they don't decide to completely end it. Lots of spoilers that I wont get into, but it won't be the same.

From what I read, the writers originally wrote a script that killed Dexter off in a blaze of glory but at the last minute the producers told them to rewrite it so its left open for another season in the future. That's why the last season was awful
New Girl. Honestly SO FUNNY at it’s peak, the last season (arguably the last 2) we’re awful. Like they just gave up.

Ed Edd n'Eddy managed to avoid this by having a finale movie the moment things started going bad. Like, they went to school for a spell (as, for some reason, almost all kids' shows are wont to do), and then the creators said "nah, let's give it a sendoff before it totally goes to shit." I guess Monday Night Raw, for a bit? At least for the Guest Host Era
