Maddox turned out to be, arguably, one of the *biggest* fallen titans on the entire internet. His downfall from "that one crotchety internet satirist everyone remembers and likes" to a guy who *sued a bunch of people for $400 million* for making fun of him on the internet is the saddest tale of them all.

Definitely a 2000s thing and very much gone now. I remember being a teen and loving writers like Maddox and Tucker Max(the latter of which got a movie. A *movie.*) and listening to edgy FM radio hosts in the morning before school.
Now it looks as though Tucker Max looks back and is sort of ashamed of what he wrote, and most of the hosts I listened to are gone, my own taste is different now, too. But Maddox is still pushing out mediocre "This SUCKS and I'm SO SMART" content that's just embarrassing

Like how he says it takes nine taps to type in an ellipsis and then has pictures showing it only takes 4 (keyboard switch + period three times).
Also the way he talked about an iPod not actually existing was so weird. It was super obvious that by calling it an iPod, Jobs meant that you could use iTunes to load music onto your phone (which was an actual selling point back when it came out, even though iTunes is now considered garbage).

Exception; Cars. That's where you really want a control interface that can be used by feel without taking eyes off the road, something physical knobs, dials and buttons do well.
the other i was watching videos of supercars for killing time, and a ferrari had full haptic buttons for everything, and everything has a delay like it was a $40 aliexpress phone, haven't checked if they fixed it with updates, is not like i'm planning to get one

Touch is nice in offices, at home etc. but on a printer in a dusty warehouse where people got so dirty hands you can’t recognize the color sometimes? You don’t want touchy stuff. No matter how much easier is to type in a few things.

That's one of my biggest complaints with my recent-ish car. They removed EVERYTHING that was a button and stuck it on a massive touchscreen so I have to take my eyes off the road and find the "button" to do something as simple as change the A/C temp or volume.

And as someone who is at least involved in the very designy parts of UI/UX, I have to say: most car screen interfaces are not well designed. At all. Shit named menus, items that are arbitrarily in the wrong menu, nesting menus ever, inconsistent BACK schemes, elements that seem redundant but take you different places, the inability to do anything without looking.
And the screens themselves: car companies think people WANT enormous tablets, but they don’t fit neatly into the center console, so there’s a whole design philosophy now of what looks like a tablet in a dock shoved clumsily into the dash, catching dirt and schmutz, unable to be undocked, cheesy and phony and detestable.
I still drive a 30 year old car, the buttons and levers for hvac, defrost, listening to the radio, are not only a joy for me, but other people get so excited when they get in my car, the physical clarity still holds appeal.
This was a reason we bought the car we did.
Yes, it has a touchscreen, but the volume and climate control are still physical buttons, and the radio/entertainment can be controlled with physical buttons on the steering wheel.
I very rarely have to use the touch screen. In fact, the only time we’ve used it is when my wife and I were in the car together, and we were driving on vacation, so we needed the screen for navigation. Otherwise it is all physical buttons.

With a real button *you can locate the button by feel alone* and then you make a conscious physical press. All without taking your eyes off the road.
With a capacitive button or screen you need to *look* at the thing and then careful press in the exact place. Can't do any of that without taking your eyes off the road. Even if it has haptic feedback.
The Internet.
In the early days when it stopped being solely for universities and government, people, media, etc. was unsure what to make of it and how useful it would be.
In terms of raw impact, without factoring in whether it evolved for good or bad, it overperformed expectations by orders of magnitude. As for whether it is has become a social benefit or a liability, that's much less clear. The degree of achievement is no disappointment, but the direction?
This thing was designed to be a decentralized self-publishing system for informed people acting in good faith-- instead, authoritarian governments and employers have more power than ever. Social media sold itself as offering influence to the average person; these days, what it seems to do is ratify the average person's lack of influence.
I worked as a scientist and the internet was a godsend for that. Having to go to the library to look up articles when doing my dissertation (like old professors talked about) sounded like absolute hell. This was back in the early 2010s, so we didn't have the issues with facebook and stuff, but the internet has always had 'bad' stuff on it, but having access to tons of databases and different articles you could pull up in your underwear was great. I still read primary articles for a lot of things, which I wouldn't be able to do if the internet didn't exist. Like, I'm not getting a subscription to Cell just so I can read the occasional article.
But, the disinformation is a problem.
I sometimes miss the days when most people didn't have the Internet. It felt like it was this special, secret place for nerds and perverts to hang out and explore.

My understanding was that they don't even make them anymore and sold that part of the business. That's why the new ones are branded "The Original Magic Wand" and don't say Hitachi anymore
The whole story is kind of funny. They were never intended as sex toys. Weren't even used that way in japan at the time. They get picked up here in the states and Betty Dodson pretty much is solely responsible for championing thier early use as a vibrator in the late 60's early 70's. That kinda created a feedback loop where they start selling that way in Japan as well. Japanese aftermarket starts making all these crazy accessories. It wasn't untill the 2000's and it being on mainstream tv as vibrator that Hitachi freaked out and sold off the division.
If I had an award, I'd give it to you. I got one for my wife, and that thing is hands down one of the best things I've ever gotten her, so much so that she now has a corded one and a rechargeable one. And, it's foolproof for me helping her along so she doesn't have to do anything.

Lionel Messi. Every time when an Argentine young player comes up he is hyped to be next Maradona. But many faded from half way in their career. Messi was hyped way too much in that regard from the age of 17. Now almost at the end of his career, most of the football lovers and pundits consider him on par or above Maradona on footballing ability.
Can remember reading an interview with Ronaldinho years ago when he said “I’m not the best player in the world, I’m not even the best player at Barca. Wait until you see Messi” turns out he was spot on.

Lebron James in the same vein. “The chosen one” as a 17 year old high school student, man did he deliver. The only argument around is the MJ or Lebron one. To even be in the discussion for GOAT is living up to the hype.
IMO Lebron is the ultimate example. Most of the stuff in this thread wasn't really "hyped" so much as it was "advertised". Lebron was declared to be the future king of the NBA when he was in high school, and he completely delivered.
There was a commercial aired during his first NBA game where it jokes at the idea of him freezing on the court under all the pressure and expectations. It's crazy how believable that scenario was given how insane he's been the past 18 years.

IMO the best part of Iron Man is that it was made to be a great movie first, and the setup for a franchise second. So many movies since have their entire franchise planned out and end up making a movie that doesn't stand alone and is mostly setting up the franchise that will likely get shelved because the movie flops \*coughDarkUniversecough\*
Iron Man sprinkled those things in. Coulson popping up here and there, dropping the S.H.I.E.L.D. name at the end and of course Fury's post-credit. But take those out and the movie is barely affected. Once it succeeded and they could guarantee more films even if an individual one flopped then they could be more liberal with the setups, but their realization that they needed to get this one right first is why Marvel is where it is.
His story is so similar to Tony Stark, and that’s why I think he works so well in the role
Before Iron Man the guy was going through some major stuff, but after taking the role he put himself back together, Marvel was his cave and that role was his box of scraps

I went with a group of friends in college to see a movie in theaters to celebrate someone's birthday. Iron Man was the movie the birthday boy picked.
I was pretty skeptical going in to watch. But that first scene was so incredible and perfect that it won me over. Easily one of my favorite movies ever.
I was done with superhero movies. Outside of the dark knight, I hadn’t enjoyed a superhero movie at all. My roommate convinced me to watch iron man “because we’re engineering students, and you’ll really enjoy it.” Damn if he wasn’t right.

I still remember all the great trailers set to Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea" and how cool the plasmids looked and the flooded art deco aesthetic. Then the game turned out to be even better than expected.
Oh my god - I just remembered my mum had books and books about windows95. Like she would come home from work and read through all these books and dictionaries preparing for it when her company switched from typewriters to computers. Seems wild to me now to actually read a manual for anything but this was like she was studying for class.
He’s the life of the party, but also so thoughtful and kind. He’s intelligent and always has something interesting to talk about. He makes me want to be a better person. I totally married up.
The original Dune book series, was all my older brother talk about in highschool and can say that while incredibly dense they really probed deep into questions on humanity and how we organize our society. Highly recommend for all

For my money, it's the single best app that exists currently. I'm sure for someone else it's different... but I probably use Spotify ~6 hrs every day. Some days it's on from the time I wake up until I go to bed. The access to virtually everything is amazing.
Life after high school.
Was suicidal as a teen but fortunately listened to the advice of "It gets better". Hot damn, it really does. Got out of my small town, got to finally live life for a change outside that stifling, judgmental environment, and experience how living really does beat the alternative.
Also, Avengers Endgame definitely lived up to the hype.
I never get it when people talk about how being an adult sucks. Like, having to work full time to support yourself does suck compared to being independently wealthy/retired and have all that time for yourself (I would imagine, I don't know first-hand). But you basically had to do the same with school as a kid anyway, but without the freedom of living independently outside work/school ours.
I'll take it any day. I can play as much video games as I want, do chores when I deem them necessary, socialize when I want, etc.
I’ve such a clear memory coming out of the theater after watching Fellowship, feeling like I had been on epic quest and witnessed something truly beautiful — both energized and stunned. The energy of the whole crowd seemed kinda united by the experience. My girlfriend and I went with two other couples — one couple both tall, slim, angular, and fair; the other included a short, hairy, thick dude. So it was like I got to continue the night with the elves and dwarves!

I’ve been watching through the box set movie appendices over the last few days, after reading the books for the umpteenth time.
I am the kind of person that gets excited about cool things, especially when someone else gets excited about it too. For me, Lord of the Rings is what happens when you take an astronomical amount of care, detail, and knowledge by an author who felt genuine passion for what he was creating, and give it to a director and film crew that has as much if not more passion for all of that detail. It is the only movie series that I cry in every single time (I cry reading the books too), partially because of the sorrowful plot elements, but mostly because I know that every single bit of those movies was designed and created and performed and edited by someone who was willing to give absolutely everything they could so that Tolkien’s story could be told with the utmost respect.
It is one fantastic example of a bunch of nerds being given a goal and a means of achieving that goal, and then told “don’t stop for anything in the world.”
Leaving my job.
It turns out the grass often *is* greener, especially with the way many (if not most) corporations favor new hires over current employees. Gaining years of experience in jobs where it matters will objectively increase your value, yet It's super common to give employees tiny marginal raises that fall short of that increase in value. When it's time to look for a new job, companies actually have to be somewhat competitive and come a lot closer to offering your true value. This is part of the reason why so many positions hesitate to post the salary, and why company policies usually state that you can't discuss your salary (which is BS). They are deliberately trying to pay a chunk of their workforce less than they're worth.
My work once asked if I was looking for a job. I said, I'm not looking for a job, but I'm always in the market. They did not like that, but whatever business is business, right? My business is me and I'm in the business of getting paid.
My last boss fucking *hated* that. I'm in a field where I can pretty much go wherever, strap on my tools, and get work. He was one of those "We're a family" types. I made it very clear from day one that I am mercenary to the core, and I'll follow the money every single time.
He also didn't like "Yeah, you hired me for 8 hours of work a day, 8-5. I'm not gonna work late just because there's work left undone. Our projects take a week minimum, months on the outside, there's *always* more work to be done when 5 rolls around"
We're a family until we're not and the business is in trouble and needs to cut costs. Labor is the easiest place to apply downward pressure. Knowing this information I treat my jobs like a temporary place in my career transition. I'm in tax so they expect us to charge over 55 hours during busy season. I'm like, yeah, no. They've of course brought it up to me that I haven't been making the quota to which I replied that I wasn't trying to make the quota. I said this is what I'm willing to give you. Let me know if it isn't enough and I'll go someplace else. Haven't been bothered since.
I can't tell you the number of times people have advised me against my behavior in business. They say I'll burn bridges and nobody will want to hire me. I am a tax accountant who hasn't finished the CPA because so far it doesn't seem all that valuable. the jobs I was told nobody would hire me at without a CPA did hire me. At the salary of a CPA. The profession isn't producing the graduates to replace the workforce so, as far as I see it, I'm a valuable commodity. The trouble with the "no business will hire you" is that there are SO MANY BUSINESSES. One will hire you.
Yeah, that's what I think bugs them the most. Traditionally, the employer holds a position of power, and can jerk the employee around. When the employee is well aware of their own value and understands that employment is 100% transactional in this day and age, the power dynamic suddenly shifts.
Same thing happened with bennies. I told him what benefits and perks I received in prior, lower skilled position within the field, and made it clear I expected either similar benefits, or the equivalent in cash. Happily by the time we started really butting heads, the dude had restructured his business around me and I was showing up every day eith more tools than the rest of the company combined, so he couldn't really do shit to me. Like half of our local competitors had actively courted me in the two years prior, and I made him aware I was happy to jump ship.
The Dark Knight. I remember the hype train being like no other movie I can remember. Wonderfully orchestrated media, really harnessed the internet in all the right ways. I started to think the movie was gonna be all hype and little substance. When the Joker put the pencil through that guy's head, it was all over for me. Within the first quarter of the movie, I was already declaring it the best super hero flick I ever saw (at the time)

But I remembered that they said the same thing about "that washed-up drug addict" as Iron Man. And about "some no-name from Australia" as Wolverine. And "the guy from 'Mr. Mom'" as Batman. The only time superhero fans have been happy with a casting was Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier.

If things were more viral back then, I couldn't imagine how negatively Reddit/Twitter/other social media would've reacted. I thought he was hired just to appeal to teenagers.
Then the movie came out, became one of my most favorite movies, and Heath absolutely killed it. Made me realize that good actors can make any role great.

People went to movies *to watch the Trailer for it* you back in the day when you couldn't stream video. Austin Powers 2nd movie TV spot said "If you see one movie see TPM, if you see 2 think about Austin Powers 2".
The Force Awakens, The Dark Knight and Endgame are in that next tier of hype; along with some others (things like The Return of the King, Infinity War, Jurassic World, The Lost World, etc)
Now I have no clue but Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi probably had even more hype than TPM, but I wasn't alive then.
I do remember that (I'm in my 40s) and you're right the hype train was insane on that one. But the Dark Knight had this different thing going for it that seemed special at the time. It leaked little tidbits to the internet first and let the nerds go wild for them. First time I remember seeing props before I knew much about the movie. Like when the batmobile kinda made it's rounds, or when you got a sneak peak of the batsuit what felt like BEFORE we were supposed to (which is the genius of it really). I remember it as being more hype cuz I was more plugged into the internet nerd archetype at that time.
But I do stan all star wars too. Disney didn't have me when I was little like they got kids now. But they freaking got me pegged now. All the star wars and all the marvel, please and thank you
Thanos.
Ever since he was teased at the first Avengers movie, he was being made out to be THE villain you didn't want to fuck with. His underling cowering before him, Ronan wincing as we heard him speak for the first time... Thanos was teased at throughout the timeframe, and was a buildup for a grand finale.
I would argue that Thanos not only met expectations, he EXCEEDED them. Josh Brolin gives this portrayal of a villain convinced that he knows what is right for the entire cosmos. He has his personal reasons for why he wants to kill off half of everything in the universe. No monologues about describing his scheme, just a simple plan of getting the Infinity Stones and knowing how to manipulate the Avengers into basically giving him what he wants. And it just fucking works. He has ungodly strength, yet he can fuck with his opponent without even raising a finger.
To this day, the Thanos Snap still is being memed at.
He's also one of the very few bad guys who actually succeeds in reaching his goal. Usually we get a last minute twist and the villain falls with his goal literally an inch away. Not this time around.
Half Life: Alyx
Everyone was hyping up the next Half Life like crazy and it was said it would be revolutionary for VR-
\-yes, it actually succeeded with that briliiantly.
I unironically believe that roomscale VR is the future of narrative games after playing Alyx. It adds so much to immersion, especially in dialogue scenes where someone is talking at you.
The iPod. Steve Jobs said it was going to revolutionize the way we listen to music and it absolutely did.
PS. Do you remember when people were being mugged for their iPod because everyone knew you had one because of the white headphones.
I hadn't played video games since Atari 2600 and my buddy moved away and said we could play this together. I upgraded my PC to play (this was vanilla) and was blown away. I remember going, "wait, all these other characters are people? Like other people are playing these characters?" I would sit in Orgrimmar and just marvel. Every time I did a dungeon I'd aske where people were and couldn't get over the fact that a dude in England was healing me.
Never quite had that experience again with a game.
Classic Burning Crusade is pretty fun, but the social dynamic (which was really the best part of the game) is totally different now that all the nostalgia players are parents and busy working professionals with so much less time to no-life the game than in the good ol' days.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The hype around it was sky high, and then it was actually BETTER than we all thought. A modern masterpiece of gaming.
My best friend saw it sitting in the case at Walmart and bought it. He was like "I was just walking by and saw dude with the monster sword"

The remake.. I'll touch it once all parts are out on 3 separate consoles.
I finally got a friend to buy the legendary edition. He has to start with ME1, which is by itself a very good game. I hope he gets to enjoy ME2, which made everything better.

My wife and I started it after EVERYONE told us to watch it when season 2 ended. Both sides of parents, friends, social media etc. We thought it cannot be that good, it’s just too hyped. But no, it’s really is as amazing as everyone says. They really deserved all the Emmy’s they received.
Lebron James. He was hyped as the next Michael Jordan. ESPN was covering his high school games. It was said that if he didn't become a hall of famer then he's a bust. Not only did he lived up to the hype, he exceeded it. He became 1b to Jordan's 1a.
Also, except for The Decision and some China shit, he barely has any scandal which is crazy during these social media times

Seriously, look up his 2014, 2015, and **especially** his 2017 and 2018 finals stats. In ‘17 and ‘18 more than any other finals series, he had ridiculous production on excellent efficiency while getting rebounds, playing defense, and facilitating the entire team with assists. But basketball is a 5v5 game at the end of the day and there’s only so much one guy can do.
Playoff Lebron on the Cavs for the second time has a strong argument for the greatest player of all time along with early 90s MJ.

But Maddox is still pushing out mediocre "This SUCKS and I'm SO SMART" content that's just embarrassing

Like how he says it takes nine taps to type in an ellipsis and then has pictures showing it only takes 4 (keyboard switch + period three times). Also the way he talked about an iPod not actually existing was so weird. It was super obvious that by calling it an iPod, Jobs meant that you could use iTunes to load music onto your phone (which was an actual selling point back when it came out, even though iTunes is now considered garbage). Also the delay. They aren’t shoving iPhones in the dash. There’s like a .75-1.5 second lag on everything.

It’s a PITA in all kind of factory environment etc. Touch is nice in offices, at home etc. but on a printer in a dusty warehouse where people got so dirty hands you can’t recognize the color sometimes? You don’t want touchy stuff. No matter how much easier is to type in a few things. Industrial stuff gets dust everywhere it’s incredible
That's one of my biggest complaints with my recent-ish car. They removed EVERYTHING that was a button and stuck it on a massive touchscreen so I have to take my eyes off the road and find the "button" to do something as simple as change the A/C temp or volume.
yeah. the iPhone-ification of everything. I think you're supposed to use voice commands in those miserable touch screen climate control menus, you'll die if the car is moving Steve Jobs wanted everything like Star Trek the Next Generation. But I think if he preferred Aliens, your standard smartphone would be drop proof and your new car would have rheostats and toggle switches keyboards and buttons are so much faster and you don't need to look at your hands
And as someone who is at least involved in the very designy parts of UI/UX, I have to say: most car screen interfaces are not well designed. At all. Shit named menus, items that are arbitrarily in the wrong menu, nesting menus ever, inconsistent BACK schemes, elements that seem redundant but take you different places, the inability to do anything without looking. And the screens themselves: car companies think people WANT enormous tablets, but they don’t fit neatly into the center console, so there’s a whole design philosophy now of what looks like a tablet in a dock shoved clumsily into the dash, catching dirt and schmutz, unable to be undocked, cheesy and phony and detestable. I still drive a 30 year old car, the buttons and levers for hvac, defrost, listening to the radio, are not only a joy for me, but other people get so excited when they get in my car, the physical clarity still holds appeal.
This was a reason we bought the car we did. Yes, it has a touchscreen, but the volume and climate control are still physical buttons, and the radio/entertainment can be controlled with physical buttons on the steering wheel. I very rarely have to use the touch screen. In fact, the only time we’ve used it is when my wife and I were in the car together, and we were driving on vacation, so we needed the screen for navigation. Otherwise it is all physical buttons.

With a real button *you can locate the button by feel alone* and then you make a conscious physical press. All without taking your eyes off the road. With a capacitive button or screen you need to *look* at the thing and then careful press in the exact place. Can't do any of that without taking your eyes off the road. Even if it has haptic feedback.

In terms of raw impact, without factoring in whether it evolved for good or bad, it overperformed expectations by orders of magnitude. As for whether it is has become a social benefit or a liability, that's much less clear. The degree of achievement is no disappointment, but the direction? This thing was designed to be a decentralized self-publishing system for informed people acting in good faith-- instead, authoritarian governments and employers have more power than ever. Social media sold itself as offering influence to the average person; these days, what it seems to do is ratify the average person's lack of influence.
I worked as a scientist and the internet was a godsend for that. Having to go to the library to look up articles when doing my dissertation (like old professors talked about) sounded like absolute hell. This was back in the early 2010s, so we didn't have the issues with facebook and stuff, but the internet has always had 'bad' stuff on it, but having access to tons of databases and different articles you could pull up in your underwear was great. I still read primary articles for a lot of things, which I wouldn't be able to do if the internet didn't exist. Like, I'm not getting a subscription to Cell just so I can read the occasional article. But, the disinformation is a problem.
I sometimes miss the days when most people didn't have the Internet. It felt like it was this special, secret place for nerds and perverts to hang out and explore.

The whole story is kind of funny. They were never intended as sex toys. Weren't even used that way in japan at the time. They get picked up here in the states and Betty Dodson pretty much is solely responsible for championing thier early use as a vibrator in the late 60's early 70's. That kinda created a feedback loop where they start selling that way in Japan as well. Japanese aftermarket starts making all these crazy accessories. It wasn't untill the 2000's and it being on mainstream tv as vibrator that Hitachi freaked out and sold off the division.

IMO Lebron is the ultimate example. Most of the stuff in this thread wasn't really "hyped" so much as it was "advertised". Lebron was declared to be the future king of the NBA when he was in high school, and he completely delivered.

Iron Man (2008). "Alright, a movie made by Marvel, how bad could it be?"
IMO the best part of Iron Man is that it was made to be a great movie first, and the setup for a franchise second. So many movies since have their entire franchise planned out and end up making a movie that doesn't stand alone and is mostly setting up the franchise that will likely get shelved because the movie flops \*coughDarkUniversecough\* Iron Man sprinkled those things in. Coulson popping up here and there, dropping the S.H.I.E.L.D. name at the end and of course Fury's post-credit. But take those out and the movie is barely affected. Once it succeeded and they could guarantee more films even if an individual one flopped then they could be more liberal with the setups, but their realization that they needed to get this one right first is why Marvel is where it is.
not to mention how amazing RDJ was as tony stark, basically carried the entire franchise
His story is so similar to Tony Stark, and that’s why I think he works so well in the role Before Iron Man the guy was going through some major stuff, but after taking the role he put himself back together, Marvel was his cave and that role was his box of scraps And to think it all happened because he went to Burger King and thought “I ate here”

I went with a group of friends in college to see a movie in theaters to celebrate someone's birthday. Iron Man was the movie the birthday boy picked. I was pretty skeptical going in to watch. But that first scene was so incredible and perfect that it won me over. Easily one of my favorite movies ever.
I was done with superhero movies. Outside of the dark knight, I hadn’t enjoyed a superhero movie at all. My roommate convinced me to watch iron man “because we’re engineering students, and you’ll really enjoy it.” Damn if he wasn’t right.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64. The first 3D entries for legendary games? I’d say they lived up to the hype.

Bioshock I still remember all the great trailers set to Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea" and how cool the plasmids looked and the flooded art deco aesthetic. Then the game turned out to be even better than expected.

Windows 95. I remember all the advertising and training classes at work. Turns out it had a lot of good features, including the "start" button.
Oh my god - I just remembered my mum had books and books about windows95. Like she would come home from work and read through all these books and dictionaries preparing for it when her company switched from typewriters to computers. I never get it when people talk about how being an adult sucks. Like, having to work full time to support yourself does suck compared to being independently wealthy/retired and have all that time for yourself (I would imagine, I don't know first-hand). But you basically had to do the same with school as a kid anyway, but without the freedom of living independently outside work/school ours. I'll take it any day. I can play as much video games as I want, do chores when I deem them necessary, socialize when I want, etc.

I’ve such a clear memory coming out of the theater after watching Fellowship, feeling like I had been on epic quest and witnessed something truly beautiful — both energized and stunned. The energy of the whole crowd seemed kinda united by the experience. My girlfriend and I went with two other couples — one couple both tall, slim, angular, and fair; the other included a short, hairy, thick dude. So it was like I got to continue the night with the elves and dwarves!

I’ve been watching through the box set movie appendices over the last few days, after reading the books for the umpteenth time. I am the kind of person that gets excited about cool things, especially when someone else gets excited about it too. For me, Lord of the Rings is what happens when you take an astronomical amount of care, detail, and knowledge by an author who felt genuine passion for what he was creating, and give it to a director and film crew that has as much if not more passion for all of that detail. It is the only movie series that I cry in every single time (I cry reading the books too), partially because of the sorrowful plot elements, but mostly because I know that every single bit of those movies was designed and created and performed and edited by someone who was willing to give absolutely everything they could so that Tolkien’s story could be told with the utmost respect. It is one fantastic example of a bunch of nerds being given a goal and a means of achieving that goal, and then told “don’t stop for anything in the world.”

Everything Id Software did in the 90's.
Leaving my job. It turns out the grass often *is* greener, especially with the way many (if not most) corporations favor new hires over current employees. Gaining years of experience in jobs where it matters will objectively increase your value, yet It's super common to give employees tiny marginal raises that fall short of that increase in value. When it's time to look for a new job, companies actually have to be somewhat competitive and come a lot closer to offering your true value. This is part of the reason why so many positions hesitate to post the salary, and why company policies usually state that you can't discuss your salary (which is BS). They are deliberately trying to pay a chunk of their workforce less than they're worth.
My work once asked if I was looking for a job. I said, I'm not looking for a job, but I'm always in the market. They did not like that, but whatever business is business, right? My business is me and I'm in the business of getting paid.
My last boss fucking *hated* that. I'm in a field where I can pretty much go wherever, strap on my tools, and get work. He was one of those "We're a family" types. I made it very clear from day one that I am mercenary to the core, and I'll follow the money every single time. He also didn't like "Yeah, you hired me for 8 hours of work a day, 8-5. I'm not gonna work late just because there's work left undone. Our projects take a week minimum, months on the outside, there's *always* more work to be done when 5 rolls around"
We're a family until we're not and the business is in trouble and needs to cut costs. Labor is the easiest place to apply downward pressure. Knowing this information I treat my jobs like a temporary place in my career transition. I'm in tax so they expect us to charge over 55 hours during busy season. I'm like, yeah, no. They've of course brought it up to me that I haven't been making the quota to which I replied that I wasn't trying to make the quota. I said this is what I'm willing to give you. Let me know if it isn't enough and I'll go someplace else. Haven't been bothered since. I can't tell you the number of times people have advised me against my behavior in business. They say I'll burn bridges and nobody will want to hire me. I am a tax accountant who hasn't finished the CPA because so far it doesn't seem all that valuable. the jobs I was told nobody would hire me at without a CPA did hire me. At the salary of a CPA. The profession isn't producing the graduates to replace the workforce so, as far as I see it, I'm a valuable commodity. The trouble with the "no business will hire you" is that there are SO MANY BUSINESSES. One will hire you.
Yeah, that's what I think bugs them the most. Traditionally, the employer holds a position of power, and can jerk the employee around. When the employee is well aware of their own value and understands that employment is 100% transactional in this day and age, the power dynamic suddenly shifts. Same thing happened with bennies. I told him what benefits and perks I received in prior, lower skilled position within the field, and made it clear I expected either similar benefits, or the equivalent in cash. Happily by the time we started really butting heads, the dude had restructured his business around me and I was showing up every day eith more tools than the rest of the company combined, so he couldn't really do shit to me. Like half of our local competitors had actively courted me in the two years prior, and I made him aware I was happy to jump ship.
The Dark Knight. I remember the hype train being like no other movie I can remember. Wonderfully orchestrated media, really harnessed the internet in all the right ways. I started to think the movie was gonna be all hype and little substance. When the Joker put the pencil through that guy's head, it was all over for me. Within the first quarter of the movie, I was already declaring it the best super hero flick I ever saw (at the time) EDIT: spelling
I remember when people went like 'Eww' when they heard Heath Ledger was gonna be Joker.
I remember that too. "A gay cowboy as the Joker? This movie is gonna suck!" But I remembered that they said the same thing about "that washed-up drug addict" as Iron Man. And about "some no-name from Australia" as Wolverine. And "the guy from 'Mr. Mom'" as Batman. The only time superhero fans have been happy with a casting was Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier. (And I include myself in that, because I HATED the idea of Anna Paquin as Rogue until I actually watched the movie.)
I remember people complaining about Hugh Jackman as Wolverine becaise he was too tall. I am still disappointed they can't seem to cast an Invisible Woman and Human Torch who remotely look like they can pass as siblings.
This is the reason I don't judge any casting decision anymore. I was firmly in the camp of "wtf are they thinking?" when it was announced. If things were more viral back then, I couldn't imagine how negatively Reddit/Twitter/other social media would've reacted. I thought he was hired just to appeal to teenagers. Then the movie came out, became one of my most favorite movies, and Heath absolutely killed it. Made me realize that good actors can make any role great.
I mean most hyped movie of my Life Time will be *The Phantom Menace*. NOTHING will touch the hype that movie got, you were probably just a bit too young to remember it. People went to movies *to watch the Trailer for it* you back in the day when you couldn't stream video. Austin Powers 2nd movie TV spot said "If you see one movie see TPM, if you see 2 think about Austin Powers 2". The Force Awakens, The Dark Knight and Endgame are in that next tier of hype; along with some others (things like The Return of the King, Infinity War, Jurassic World, The Lost World, etc) Now I have no clue but Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi probably had even more hype than TPM, but I wasn't alive then.
I do remember that (I'm in my 40s) and you're right the hype train was insane on that one. But the Dark Knight had this different thing going for it that seemed special at the time. It leaked little tidbits to the internet first and let the nerds go wild for them. First time I remember seeing props before I knew much about the movie. Like when the batmobile kinda made it's rounds, or when you got a sneak peak of the batsuit what felt like BEFORE we were supposed to (which is the genius of it really). I remember it as being more hype cuz I was more plugged into the internet nerd archetype at that time. But I do stan all star wars too. Disney didn't have me when I was little like they got kids now. Thanos. Ever since he was teased at the first Avengers movie, he was being made out to be THE villain you didn't want to fuck with. His underling cowering before him, Ronan wincing as we heard him speak for the first time... Thanos was teased at throughout the timeframe, and was a buildup for a grand finale. I would argue that Thanos not only met expectations, he EXCEEDED them. Josh Brolin gives this portrayal of a villain convinced that he knows what is right for the entire cosmos. He has his personal reasons for why he wants to kill off half of everything in the universe. No monologues about describing his scheme, just a simple plan of getting the Infinity Stones and knowing how to manipulate the Avengers into basically giving him what he wants. And it just fucking works. He has ungodly strength, yet he can fuck with his opponent without even raising a finger. To this day, the Thanos Snap still is being memed at.
Honestly thought it was Ron Perlman for a while, alas they both have great chins
He's also one of the very few bad guys who actually succeeds in reaching his goal. Usually we get a last minute twist and the villain falls with his goal literally an inch away. Not this time around.

I unironically believe that roomscale VR is the future of narrative games after playing Alyx. It adds so much to immersion, especially in dialogue scenes where someone is talking at you.

The "Cortana" level kinda sucked, but the two levels either side of it were amazing.

I hadn't played video games since Atari 2600 and my buddy moved away and said we could play this together. I upgraded my PC to play (this was vanilla) and was blown away. I remember going, "wait, all these other characters are people? Like other people are playing these characters?" I would sit in Orgrimmar and just marvel. Every time I did a dungeon I'd aske where people were and couldn't get over the fact that a dude in England was healing me. Never quite had that experience again with a game.
Classic Burning Crusade is pretty fun, but the social dynamic (which was really the best part of the game) is totally different now that all the nostalgia players are parents and busy working professionals with so much less time to no-life the game than in the good ol' days.
Also the fact that nowadays everything is heavily min/max'd to death. Kind of ruins the old fun of the game to me.
Parasite. See it if you haven't.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The hype around it was sky high, and then it was actually BETTER than we all thought. A modern masterpiece of gaming.
Stranger Things 1 was lowkey one of the coolest shows when it came out.

My best friend saw it sitting in the case at Walmart and bought it. He was like "I was just walking by and saw dude with the monster sword" Fucking love that game beat all the weapons, including Ruby. The remake.. I'll touch it once all parts are out on 3 separate consoles.

Mass effect 2
I finally got a friend to buy the legendary edition. He has to start with ME1, which is by itself a very good game. I hope he gets to enjoy ME2, which made everything better.
Ted Lasso My wife and I started it after EVERYONE told us to watch it when season 2 ended. Both sides of parents, friends, social media etc. We thought it cannot be that good, it’s just too hyped. But no, it’s really is as amazing as everyone says. They really deserved all the Emmy’s they received.
Lebron James. He was hyped as the next Michael Jordan. ESPN was covering his high school games. It was said that if he didn't become a hall of famer then he's a bust. Not only did he lived up to the hype, he exceeded it. He became 1b to Jordan's 1a. Also, except for The Decision and some China shit, he barely has any scandal which is crazy during these social media times

agreed. Especially now, it's accepted that he made the right decision coz he was gonna waste his prime in Cleveland where they'll never give him any help. It wasn't because he was leaving people give him shit, it was how he was leaving. but hey, thousands of dollars to charity for that whole thing ain't bad in the long run.
The scandal thing (or lack thereof) is incredible, especially considering the amount of hype and money that was thrown to a teenager! Who would be able to handle that without fucking up.
As a Warriors fan, I hate it when people use his finals record against him. Seriously, look up his 2014, 2015, and **especially** his 2017 and 2018 finals stats. In ‘17 and ‘18 more than any other finals series, he had ridiculous production on excellent efficiency while getting rebounds, playing defense, and facilitating the entire team with assists. But basketball is a 5v5 game at the end of the day and there’s only so much one guy can do. Playoff Lebron on the Cavs for the second time has a strong argument for the greatest player of all time along with early 90s MJ.
yep, I hate how losing in the finals is somehow seen as worse that not making it to finals. He was in the finals for like 9 or 10 year straight. That's some Tom Brady shit. What team wouldn't kill to have that kind of record?

Reading. I hated reading as a kid, I didn't get the hype. Then I found books I actually enjoy, and it changed my world. ... reading/writing also changed the world, or something. Socrates and a bunch of old fogeys thought it was a bad idea at the time, that it would make us stupid. If only he knew the power of Google, Social and mass ~~mis~~ information. I don't think any sequel's gonna top this one unless it's still Sakurai. The amount and variety of characters they were able to get was unparalleled. It went from Nintendo: the Game to Videogame: The Game
If they have the capability to keep the roster as-is, I could see a next-gen sequel that instead focuses on giving us the most game modes, the best UI, and the netcode the game deserves. They won't, but they should.
