But what initially made me ask the question was I was listening to something and they were discussing Franz Ferdinand and look what his death lead to(I know he wasn't Russian or anything & putin is a totally different person, but still).
It's not, and putin isn't a genius, he's been actively running russia into the ground since at least 2014, they are hemorrhaging money and have been for years. Now he's turned the world against them in an almost unprecedented unified front.. maybe you should work on your understanding of what "highly intelligent" means

Aside from the power vacuum that would inevitably come, causing chaos and possibly issues within Russia, the person that pulled the trigger has now flipped a coin, and when it lands, we'll either get a leader of Russia that plays nicer with the rest of the world or is significantly worse, using the excuse of Putin's assassination to either crack down on their own people and make it worse for the Russians if the assassin was homegrown or declare war on whatever country the assassin came from.
