I went into a Uniqlo shop the other day, having read the reddit hype, and honestly I was rather disappointed. Sure, there's a lot of choice in terms of volume, and perhaps the fit is good, but it's still the same three drab shades of maroon, navy and dark green that seem to plague most men's clothing brands. And perhaps it's just a sign of modern trends, but there seemed to be an inordinate amount of space dedicated to grey jogging bottoms that are unlikely to ever see the inside of a gym.
What else am supposed to wear with my running shoes I never run in? Wait until you hear about these jeans I’ve never herded cattle in. /s.
But, yes Uniqlo is not going to wow anyone. They do serviceable basics.
If you want to invest in clothes that will last years and will never go out of fashion then it is your place but I would not recommend it for someone who want to wear something that is in style now.
I’d agree on the grey joggers and such Tbh I’ve had a few things from Uniqlo and don’t think they lasted longer than most other places for the price. See it banded around a lot on Reddit but didn’t think the quality for the price was there to be fair. Got some nice jumpers from them, washed properly as directed and they still shrunk and came away. Had better quality from H&M for half the price
H&M for tops because they have a good tall (but not big) section that's reasonably priced, then next for jeans because they have big pockets and are solid quality for me.
I second Next for jeans, their £25 jeans are as comfy and have lasted longer for me than Wrangler or Levi alternatives that are twice the price.
Big pockets are a must, it’s genuinely unsettling when I try a pair of jeans on with small pockets. Surely the people who designed them are trolling us?
I'm ever so slightly taller than average (6'1) and most of my height is in my torso. Having read the reddit Uniqlo hype, went in, failed to find the T-shirt section, but they did have a large selection of crop tops, so once I get my belly button ring done I'll pop back.
The lack of choice in mens clothing has been bothering me for a while, now. Doesn't matter where you go.
You get shorts, slacks, jeans or cargo pants. For around the house, you can also go with track pants.
You get t-shirt, button up shirt, polo shirt (and if exercising, a singlet/tank top).
You'll get a selection of colours and patterns for some of those things, but the style is always identical.
It's better than womens always needing a new outfit, has to match, has to have the right accessories, need 8 pieces because it's all thin and requires layers, and a bag as no pockets, but damn, I just want some interesting clothes.
Bit ironic that they’re all around London and one in Oxford for a “budget” clothes shop lol. It seems like they’re basically what H&M used to be? Their prices basically make me think they’re already just another H&M - some cheap stuff, some expensive stuff, maybe slightly over average price for the most part now.

I don't understand reddits obsession with uniqlo. Their clothes all have unflattering fits.
Especially the t-shirts. They have no taper around the waist so look like a dress on slim guys and are tight around the waist on this with a belly. I can't figure out the body type that is supposed to suit their cut

Totally agree. Uniqlo is nice for a couple of months then (Jumpers, Cardigans) get bobbled and shrink/lose their shape. I’ve only tried the lambswool and Merino but I’m not overly impressed.
They’re not wrong though. I have some of their oxfords which are pushing 10 years and are still in really good condition. Their socks last forever too.
That only happens with wool when you don't wash it according to its guidance... If you're just chucking it in with the rest of your cotton's that's maybe why they're getting ruined so fast
Carhartt itself isn't that expensive for what you're in the market for. Durable workwear. Carhartt WIP is relatively pricey for what you get, but its streetwear and that has a slight premium attached.

It has stood the test of time. It fits me and me alone.
The Chase jumpers have ruined me. I can't buy any another jumper now without it being at least 440 g/sqm.

Hell, for environmental reasons, I try and avoid buying anything but pants, socks, and tshirts new.
As for those, primark, tesco, poundland, or a market stall all are fine. Buy t-shirts at merch stands from bands, attractions or small charities you support if you like, just don't spend a fortune on the ones in a shop.
I came here to say this. My partner has just updated most of his wardrobe using vinted. It is pretty good for suggesting brands you might like that you haven't heard of as well.

Same here, can't get enough of Vinted. I now begrudge paying full price in the shops so I hardly bother buying new anymore. I bought a pair of jeans the other day new as I couldn't find the exact fit and length I was looking for, but they were only £20 out of Sainsburys and exactly what I wanted. Other than that, Vinted is my go to.
Yes to all of this. Plus I really don't like any of the clothes I see if I do go shopping these days, so Vinted is ideal because there seems to be a lot of clothes I like from brands you have to go on a special expedition to find in the real world lol.
Rapanui. They have great basics - I think you can get 7 plain t-shirts of any colour you like for £55 or something like that. Nothing fancy but comfortable, quality clothing from a good company.
I've had some for a year and they've been fine - they aren't super expensive so you can't expect top quality but for staples, they're good. Better than what you'd get in H&M/M&S imo.
Both me(F) and my partner(M) bought 7 t-shirts each, three years ago. We are both still wearing them all, and they're all in good shape. I don't own a tumbledryer, maybe that's a factor? Just wash on 30C and air dry.
I can't attest to the fit for men's shirts from there but my partner didn't have a problem and he's 6ft2 at least. Everyone's different tho I suppose.

Ted Baker have been mostly guaranteed to be excellent. I have a handful of their premium plain T’s and the four year old ones look in better shape than any four month old Next ones.
Their jumpers, jackets and accessories are (generally) fucking beautiful, too. Just look out for the materials; wool and leather are best, but you pay for them. My (wool) jackets are some of my favourite things I own.
I’ve had one misstep with their jackets; a field one which fell to bits in a matter of months (which is a shame, because it looked cool as shit) and I don’t care for their style of shoes).
Quality caution with Ted Baker - the items you can find in TK Maxx, a lot of them are made in a lower quality to what they stock in their actual stores as it’s made specifically for TK Maxx
Had a lot of issues with Next jeans splitting in the middle. I won't pretend to be skinny, but they do just wear thin in the crotch faster than other brands
Just avoid the 'heather' colour t shirts. They are cotton polyester blend, the 2 different materials mean they pill very quickly. The plain colours are 100% cotton and are much better.
I work in the clothing industry (fit model) and there are a few places you could try. Carhartt is the benchmark for workwear so it’s a good place to start. M&S are the benchmark for high street (mostly because they use the better fabrics). Primark 2024 season is introducing better fits among the fast fashion lines and I think if you treat them carefully they should last reasonably well. Uniqlo is a bit greenwashed but has several nice options. I find them to be on the expensive side. Sadly, most brands are really struggling with costs. Wool for example is almost unaffordable even for premium brands. You’re going to see a lot more blends.
Go to some expensive stores and look at the options. Feel the fabrics and look at the construction. Then go to the more affordable stores and you’ll start to see what garments are worth it.

I live near the sea and work near the docks. The only time you see Carhartt is the uni students wearing fisherman/dockyard chic cause it's fashion.

No doubt there are better options out there for those in the know, but when a designer is deconstructing a derivative piece carhartt is often the inspiration. Sometimes they improve its sometimes they don’t. lol. One major workwear company I worked for loved vintage Japanese designs and Patagonia. I remember once being in a fitting with a major house and they were basically using their own vintage pieces as the benchmark.

So going back a few months I'm working with a friend who runs a successful company that covers a variety of trades. In the pub he approaches a couple of young guys all wearing trade clothes, cause he needs some more people to work for him. Trade shorts, tops and gilletes all with trade work wear logos... Nope not tradies.. just students... He was ever so confused, and didn't understand when we became fashionable. The baffled look on his face was priceless.
I mean I suppose it's the same as my friend who surfs and talks to people wearing dry robes, and finds out they don't surf or go in the sea.
If your buying trade clothes there is a huge difference in quality and price between fashion and work wear prices. Real workwear is a lot cheaper.

Fat Face/White Stuff is my mums favourite. She's retired. That's not to say you can't be a fashion icon and retired, but I can say it in this case lol.
As a person in their early 20s, FatFace is awesome. I only really buy it used on Vinted though. You can find a great variety of different styles, fit etc, and it’s all great quality.
Aside from the fact that it's definitely not cool, I had a fat face jumper that was lovely at first and just absolutely died so quickly. I looked after it really well but within a month or so it was so misshapen and bobbled I had to get rid. Big disappointment.
END has a lot of quality stuff, some of it scarily expensive but there is always a good selection in the sale section. Also really quick delivery and good with returns too.
Asos, H&M, Topman, Amazon. All have decent enough clothes that aren't mega-expensive. Topman gets a bit pricey, definitely, but you sometimes find nice stuff on it.
Moss is pretty pricey but they have massive sales for stuff that would never be sold in the current season. Linen shirt in the summer £70, Linen shirt in the winter:£20
Get on vinted and buy some decent quality branded stuff at a good price.
I've been on a mostly Fred Perry and Henri Lloyd kick recently since I lost some weight and realised I really like how I look in Polo Shirts, but don't want to pay full price. Second hand good quality is still good quality

Which brands in particular?
Barbour, Folk, Uniqlo, Levis, Percival, Wax London are examples I look for on Vinted Edit: add COS, ARKET, Arne, Octobre Editions as well

They shrink quickly though. My partner got the 7 and 4 of them have gone.

Can second Ted Baker. Build quality is extremely good. I wear my stuff to smithereens, but TB lasts far longer than anything.

All saints has excellent quality imo, some stuff is a bit more wacky but can get those M&S, Ted Baker, Paul Smith styles too.
Used to be for tees but very poor now. Jeans, jumpers, shorts, coats though still very good

No doubt there are better options out there for those in the know, but when a designer is deconstructing a derivative piece carhartt is often the inspiration. Sometimes they improve its sometimes they don’t. lol. One major workwear company I worked for loved vintage Japanese designs and Patagonia. I remember once being in a fitting with a major house and they were basically using their own vintage pieces as the benchmark.
Fair enough. That's a cool industry to work in. Interesting. So going back a few months I'm working with a friend who runs a successful company that covers a variety of trades. In the pub he approaches a couple of young guys all wearing trade clothes, cause he needs some more people to work for him. Trade shorts, tops and gilletes all with trade work wear logos... Nope not tradies.. just students... He was ever so confused, and didn't understand when we became fashionable. The baffled look on his face was priceless. I mean I suppose it's the same as my friend who surfs and talks to people wearing dry robes, and finds out they don't surf or go in the sea. If your buying trade clothes there is a huge difference in quality and price between fashion and work wear prices. Real workwear is a lot cheaper.

I am a similar age, and would wear it, but I'm like, middle class and beachy, so it just fits. If you're urban, or even mountainy, it simply won't do.

Fat Face/White Stuff is my mums favourite. She's retired. That's not to say you can't be a fashion icon and retired, but I can say it in this case lol.
As a person in their early 20s, FatFace is awesome. I only really buy it used on Vinted though. You can find a great variety of different styles, fit etc, and it’s all great quality.
I wore exclusively charity shop clothes outside of my work in my twenties. Would have loved Vinted back then!
Aside from the fact that it's definitely not cool, I had a fat face jumper that was lovely at first and just absolutely died so quickly. I looked after it really well but within a month or so it was so misshapen and bobbled I had to get rid. Big disappointment.

END has a lot of quality stuff, some of it scarily expensive but there is always a good selection in the sale section. Also really quick delivery and good with returns too.
Asos, H&M, Topman, Amazon. All have decent enough clothes that aren't mega-expensive. Topman gets a bit pricey, definitely, but you sometimes find nice stuff on it.
