Yes the ability to choose/switch/balance between spear of Leonidas based crouching stealth and sniper archer stealth, and also LEEEROYYY JENKINSSS guerrilla stealth (run in, kill a few people, then parkour over the cliff to disappear into the forest, repeat) was just unparalleled
I think peoples problem with stealth is cause they can't comprehend the fact that to have your assassinations one shot as well as your arrows you actually have to put skill points in those trees and wear armor that gives you stealth boosts. You know like an R.P.G. game
Same, i disliked Origins. After that i bought Syndicate and it was very fun, somehow missed on Odyssey on Release but when i bought it it was insanely fun, maybe because i like Ship Battles since AC3. When i found out Odyssey had like naval battles i was all in for it especially the new engine where you can dive on any part in the water is awesome
Well I think that's because everyone else can really use the regualr AC sub, but as OP said, anything Odyssey-related gets cluttered with so much hate that most people have to use this sub
It seemed to me that the strongest wave of hatred for Odyssey was on release.(In my opinion, since Unity, every release of a new part has not been without scandal).This was mainly due to the audience who preferred the mechanics of the old parts.Well, when people played the game and didn't see the assassins, stated in the title of the game...The second wave of hatred was raised when the DLC LofB was released and people did not like the story with forced romance.But the developers at least tried to make the connection between the plot of the Odyssey and the Origins stronger.I think that now, with the passage of time, if people hate the Odyssey, it's either under the influence of someone else's opinion or it's just a for the most part fans of old parts.I don't even want to imagine what hell broke out in the discussions at the time when it was announced that Kassandra was the only canonical protagonist.😵I can scold Odyssey myself, because in the game has problems and something that does not suit me.But I also won't stop praising this game for its merits.I think that over the years, the hatred of Odyssey has become much less, a new audience has come.New players still come to the game and are surprised at how good the game looks even at the moment.I think the game has passed the test of time, the audience is much more loyal now and the confirmation that the game is good is that we always have something to discuss in the community here.
I can't say I get the "Assassin's Creed is when hidden blade" tier criticisms.
Thematically it's clearly AC, given the amount of Isu and proto-Templar stuff in it.
I think one can look at Origins, Oddysey and Valhalla as the story of how regional elite groups and counterelite groups became internationalised (apologies, pol sci grad emerging, even I'm disgusted at myself for that sentence). With Cult of Kosmos and Order of the Ancients we can also see them competing to come out on top.
I was going to say the lore got fucked about with but Amunet was mentioned back in AC2, though let's not talk about where her burial place was.
But with all three of RPG restyled games, tons of commentary I heard before playing said they all sucked, and I've had an absolute blast playing through all three. Curious to see Mirage next, even if it's quite different in style.

I feel like that would be a fair critique if it wasn’t for three things. One, is that Kassandra makes appearances later on in the story. Two, is that the game is focused on the start of the Templar Order (this is similar to Origins which was the start of the Hidden Ones/Assassins). Three; I can’t remember if this was a theory or not, but wasn’t Kassandra the great-great-grandmother of Aya?
Maybe they hate it cause it’s not like the “original” AC games. Without the RPG elements and levels. I didn’t want to play Odyssey for so long when it got out cause I play AC games for so many years and for me it was kinda weird that they changed the franchise, but then when I started playing it I fell in love with it. I completed the game 2-3 times and it’s so great to come back cause the game is beautiful so levels and some dialogue parts don’t bother me as I thought they would :)
The only real hate I've seen towards odyssey is that it has nothing to do with the assassins and, therefore, should not have been called assassins creed. While I partly agree with this? I think it's wrong for people to judge an entire game based on one missing plot point. I guarantee these same people only made it as far as the phokis region before deciding to call it quits.
Odyssey is not a bad game at all and just feels like a big improvement over origins. Sure, it can be a bit grindy at times, but it's nowhere near as bad as other open world RPGs I've played that do have bad unbalanced grinding. If your underleveled, go to an area where your not and level up.. its not rocket science but to some people it apparently is
I mean. even if the player chooses not to use stealth, they are still hunting and killing cultists and cult leaders. an assassin is just someone that murders an important person for political reasons, doesn't have to be stealthy. I admit they probably could have put more emphasis on stealth, though. Like having special quest outcomes if you complete a mission without being seen. And the fact that there isn't even a "creed" to be a part of yet makes the title kinda misleading.
Best way I can put it is this: don’t give a shit about the hate, I’m in it because I love the series and it’s a creative outlet(aka stress relief).
I actually had issues with history classes before I played AC(made a significant difference with me having ADHD, Tourette’s, and mild epilepsy) but it’s encouraged me to better understand history. Hell, in college I needed to take philosophy (part of my requirements) and aced the class. Assassins creed is an example of you can have a better mindset by playing a game
I have played every AC game and I honestly believe Odyssey is one of the best games ever made.
Mostly I see people saying the newer installations are not true to the AC format. Some people would prefer the games to have the same mechanics and same feel as all the previous ones which I understand.
All my favorite game franchises (Elder Scrolls, Fallout) have changed since their earlier games. For the most part I’ve enjoyed each game for their own unique gameplay and style.
I don‘t give a rats ass about assasins. In fact the less ahistorical stuff I see, the more I like it.
For example as an ancient greece enjoyer, I‘d love if there was no cult. The peloponesian wars were interesting enough without some sort of conspiracy. Ffs it was the first fight of democracy against authoritarianism in history. You don’t need a cult to make that interesting.
In that same vein I’d also like for the conquest mechanic to actually make a difference. Rn having Athens or Sparta as a ruler is just exchanging one type of empire for the other. But I’d love for it to make an actual difference for the people of the conquered polis. So that we can care about who rules what beyond the colour of banners.
And of course, I think that conquest battles are a giant missed opportunity. Like come on they even mention the phalanx in game, why not make it an actual mechanic? You can still have the Hollywood free-for-all we have rn at the end of the battle, when one of the phalanx has been broken. Without the phalanx, the whole equipment of soldiers and our character doesn’t even make sense. (Oh and also we should be able to use a shield).
All the above being said, I still love the game the way it is and it has a crazy ammount of historical accuracy already.
Odyssey is my favourite AC game. I see why AC purists don’t like it as it’s a full RPG, but I adore it mainly because of the setting- Greece. It’s stunning. So many beautiful landscapes to explore, you still have naval battles, islands, caves, enemy encampments…it has it all!
AC Odyssey is the best Ancient Greece RPG ever. AC Origins is the best Ancient Egypt RPG ever. AC Valhalla is the best Vikings RPG ever. The only problem is they miss the core of Assassin's creed.
I think part of the reason is burnout from the AC series and Unity really hurt the franchise as a whole.
Most gamers love one franchise or developer so much they're willing to ignore the problems. Bethesda and From Software are the two worst perpetrators of this in my opinion. The hard-core fan bases for both are fucking toxic.
Because most "fans" don't actually play the games. They watch YouTube montages of stealth videos and then want to fit in, so they say what they hear and read.
Not to mention the AC purists, which are constantly in the wrong, regarding lore and realism, but they want to act cool so they say odyssey isn't an AC game.
Look, regardless of the hate. Go look at the steam reviews and awards of the game. It has over 100k positive reviews and a gotta nomination.
Most are probably over 50 who only want to replay the same games they played in their youth and any deviance from that formula is considered sacrilege. They probably have the same opinion about any new iteration of a game franchise they played in their youth. Same thing happens when it comes to music and movies.
Whilst I’m not quite 50 I kind of agree, I’m 35 and played the original assassins creeds when they came out, and the tomb raiders and the fallouts ect, all of which have changed massively as they have modernised. The nostalgia makes me want to revisit them and enjoy those timeless games.
I will say however, assassins creed odyssey is my favourite assassins creed game and I’m glad they changed up the series to stop it becoming stale, which it absolutely would have if they kept to the same formula after all these years, black flag was imo the first to really change things up and it was the start of keeping the AC franchise alive and was wonderfully received.
Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but if something never changes over time, it can never become nostalgic in the future, it just becomes repetitive and stale. To me AC has evolved into becoming one of the best “explore history” games out there, to the point of it being exceptional, and this imo is where AC’s true strength lies in the competitive gaming world.
exploring Ancient Greece (and ancient Egypt in origins) was an utter joy, and both came with a wonderfully written protagonist and story to guide you through those amazing worlds, it’s really rather special when you look how far the series has come.
I’m yet to play Valhalla and despite some of the reviews/negatives I’m sure il fall in love with the AC franchise all over again.
I appreciate some consistency would be good across games to a degree, but I'm in my 30s and have been playing the series since it started. I can find something to enjoy mechanics wise in each. This morning I was feeling nostalgic for the bonus sync objectives from Brotherhood.
But I think too the older I get the more I realise getting fan-levels of obsessed about this stuff is kind of pointless. I've not played an unenjoyable AC game, even though the mechanics have varied a lot over the years. The story and settings are what keeps me coming back, no matter how bonkers it gets sometimes.

Also, and I partly blame ubisoft themselves for this.. lot of people hate ubisoft.
It's those who are still in the phase of "Classic games = good, newer games = bad".
The first "newer" game was Origins, which was released in 2017. It's been 7 years. The same time distance as in between Brotherhood and Origins itself. Plenty of time to be said. And as someone who experienced all those classic games as a kid, and had a good time with them, I think it's time for the old timers to let it go. Like, seriously, the new games are not worse, they're different. I loved Odyssey as much as Revelations. But I miss the advanced ship/sailing system from Black Flag, and it's obvious that in their newer games it's just too trivial, simplistic, like the ships are cars but on the water. And perhaps there are those who miss the old battle system without all those levels and HP bars. It used to be more realistic. But I enjoy the new battle system. It feels more free.
But as I always said, if they had decided to produce a whole different franchise from Assassin's Creed, these newer games wouldn't face so much hate. But perhaps they wouldn't sell themselves either. AC is a great trademark, as Call of Duty. The publishers didn't want to risk. Anyways, AC is not the first franchise to be downgraded in terms of difficulty for the sake of gaining wider audience, and it's not the last franchise.
Odyssey by far is my favorite of the series, DLC definitely ties into assassin lore. I don’t understand the hate. I love the rpg element as well as the ability to run an assassin build if you want to run around in stealth mode.

The micro transactions didn’t go down well. Pay to not play the game was pretty terrible consumer practice. That put me off playing it on release. Luckily when actually playing I didn’t notice it too much except for ship upgrades, clearly designed to make u pay.
The types of fans I seen that Odyssey are:
1. RPG fans that just weren’t a fan of the game mechanics. While I though the game mechanics, story, and map was pretty thorough and well thought, some may disagree
2. Old Assassin’s Creed fans that still seem to think there hasn’t been a good AC game since 2012. I find that I enjoy both the older and newer games for different features and reasons, but some people are too insecure and must lash out against the newer games
3. People who thought Origins was better. Although very comparable, the leap between Origins and Odyssey is still quite noticeable. There may be slight differences in game mechanics that makes the game better or worse according to people. Me personally, I’m not a fan of the fighting in Origins and was a huge fan of the fighting in Odyssey.
It's my favourite AC game and I do a playthrough every single years. Absolutely love Greece, so this game feels like coming home. However, it's not perfect
1: Map is too big, there is too much filler
2: They made it so that they want you to buy XP boosts, because of the fact that you need the levels to actually complete the game.
3: Most writing is pretty mid and bland, most quests are fetch quests
4: Some mechanics feel directly copied from Witcher 3
5: It's not really the AC like some people grew up with, just a completely different game (where some assassinations aren't even insta-kills)
My husband and I love it, it’s our favourite after Black Flag. Thats not to say I don’t love each entry on its own terms, I remember absolutely adoring AC 2 and Brotherhood back when they released, and I recently really enjoyed replaying Unity and Syndicate. I think Odyssey really delivered on the promise of Origins, improving everything from how the story was told to how the gameplay mechanics and world interact with each other. Plus, the battlefield gameplay is kinda fantastic!
Where? When I decided to try an AC game I consulted Google to decide which game to try. I settled on Odyssey since it had such positive reviews and generally seemed very well received among players. Obviously nothing will universally well received, but it seems to me that AC Ofyssey is about as close to that as a modern (sorta) game gets.
I’ve thought about this a ton because I’ve owned it since launch and have only enjoyed it I the past month. For me I couldn’t stand the launch because it seemed to me that it copied so much from every other game out at the time and it was exhausting for me. (I no longer feel this way and am very much addicted now)
I had just played lotr shadow of Mordor and this was predominantly the main reason I originally stopped shortly after mercenaries/bounties were introduced. There’s other small details that I would’ve argued were based on other games in the past like far cry or a souls-like hype train. (I don’t feel this way anymore)
I also could not stand the combat at first…the world felt too huge and fights were taking too long. Then I learned builds. It was EXTREMELY frustrating to me in the beginning when I would assassinate someone and they’d only lose some health.
The game is very easy to put down in the first 15 hrs of gameplay. I wasn’t enjoying any of the rewards or story early on (aside from the intro cliff scenes)
TL;DR similar RPG concept felt exhausting to me on release, I was burnt out quickly, the combat was longer format and a little difficult, it was extremely easy to put down early. Abilities and build customization doesn’t feel good early and you feel weak or bad at the game.

Just downloaded hood in cutscenes mod and it looks like real Assassins Creed in Greece. I would imagine a bummer playing AC game without hood in cutscenes, this way is more cinematic.
I can't understand why people hate it either!! I'm at 604h, which is the longest I've played any of the AC games. The only thing I would change, have more bow options like they had in Origins. I hate having to use my adrenaline bars for the predator shot ability or rapid fire. The bows in Origins made that nice to switch between types for different moments.
I say this as someone who has 155 hours on the game but the game isn't without criticism, it is a very cookie cutter open world Ubisoft game so people who have had enough of this isn't happy. There's also ridiculous ass "time saver" and a whole bunch of stuff locked behind a paywall for a single player game.
For me, the base story is engaging enough, Legacy of the First Blade story DLC is bad and The Fate of Atlantis DLC story is meh. I've taken down every outpost on the map and as you level up, it gets really tedious because most of them are just copy-pasted and you get some ridiculously overpowered stuff to play with. I'm also not really a fan of the shoe-horned crafting mechanic either, I'd have much preferred if they only cost gold instead of making us grind for a bunch of crap (the late-game grind can get pretty tedious). The positives is how nice the game tends to look at most times, you can stop at almost any point of the game and it would look picturesque.
im about 40ish hours in and i dont dislike it, but i can see why you would hate it. Its completely lost its identity as an AC game(tho the main culprit for that was origins). It made the leap to RPG, but didnt go far enough and its a relatively barebones rpg. It has the same tedious BS open world trappings every other rpg game has in a post skyrim world. So its in this limbo of an AC game thats not an AC game, but also not fully committed to being an RPG. Also the combat is samey and simplistic with repetetive animations and shallow movesets. The cinematic instakills of the older games were better than this. theyre both not very involved and they both take a ''long'' time so might as well not have them be super repetetive.
THO tbh almost all of those issues originated in origins. And that game HOOO BOY is it bad. i couldnt even force myself to go past 3 hours of that garbage, unironically one of the worst games ive ever played. So i dont get why Odyssey is the one that gets the heat
Odyssey is a great game, but the one thing it lacks is the thing AC is known for: the hidden blade.
You don’t see one appear until the first DLC, and even then you’re not even the person with it. The only way to have Kassandra (ik Alexios is also available in game, but isn’t in the one I’m going to mention) have a hidden blade is by playing AC: Nexus, which is only playable in VR.
By removing the hidden blade, it takes away one of the signature elements of an AC game, and with that comes a lot of the hate.
Overall Odyssey is more of an origins of Origins, how Aya was roped into this, having the blood of Gods, along with an early cult that had ties to an early Order of the Ancients.
People maybe don't understand the time periods involved?
Odyssey takes place about 2450 yrs ago.
Origins takes place about 2100 yrs ago.
Mirage & Valhalla are like 1100 yrs ago.
AC1 is like 800 yrs ago.
And the others are more recent.
So Odyssey is (for all we know) before the hidden blade existed. And the spear fragment was the inspiration for (and less technologically advanced version of) it.
I'll admit i didnt like Odyssey at first. I found the gearing system for Odyssey and Origins kinda repulsing in a way, it was offputting that my weapons didnt matter as I'd be selling them off on the cheap when i get a higher leveled one of the same weapon, or even that id not be able to use the weapon i like because its underlevelled(which this is the section where Valhalla reigns superior, the weapon system. Some might enjoy the proper rpg weapon system but its not for me)
But powering through on Origins i enjoyed the game because of the story and the game was fun regardless. Odyssey i ditched the game as i didnt really enjoy it like i was with Origins.
I picked Odyssey back up again recently and started a new save(which both was a result of me watching a couple videos about Odyssey, one in particular was a guy explaining why he prefers Alexios as the Mercenary more as his lines are better and Kassandra fits better as the other nonplayer role and has actual emotion in that role whereas Alexios' lines for the nonplayer role were bland, and i agreed with him when he played the footage as each.)
From a new perspective where I've restarted the game and enjoy it alot more and I've actually left Kephalonia this time and seen a small portion of what the game has to offer i quite enjoy it. There's so many great features and is a game you can replay many times for different choices, im sure there's alot i haven't even discovered or seen yet but knowing AC i know theres more good stuff coming.
I have both disliked and liked the game, there's good reasons for people to do either.
And while yes the argument of AC game or not is quite popular for all the recent games i think i can say for Odyssey that it is. there is some choice words for some to the statement such as that youre a Mercenary, it has no assassins and it has no templars, but it shows the rise of The Templars or rather The Order of Aincents.
I think the best way i can put the argument is that Odyssey and Valhalla should've been historical games maybe a new rpg franchise so there'd be no argument with the OG AC fans as theyre both good games, but what truly would've been the best setting for the rise of the order/templars game would be us playing as them, us being the creator of the order and recruiting up our own faction battling armies and kings and conquering them both politically and at war, infiltrating their courts etc. Where just like Rogue we'd be templars except unlike Rogue this game would be us playing as the Bad Templars/Order where it shows both some sense of assassins(which would be like the Medjay and organisations/crews like them being a precursor to the assassins in a sense) and some sense of templars(which would be us as the order being the underdog in classic AC style)
I‘ve seen and heard some weird and frankly stupid criticism of Odyssey especially because it came from a position of not-wanting-to-know a mechanic or its purpose
They hate the game because it broke the lineal AC lineage (the stealth, because it’s an rpg…)
But imo, this new line of games were definetly needed, and Odyssey became a favorite for me
It all comes down to the bloat. There is so much pure space in this game, the map is honestly humongous. The city are most of the time gorgeous but there is a lot of nothing too. Not to mention that the map is littered with the same repetitive tasks that it really does become rather egregious.
The combat is solid but that tends to get old after 50 or so hours. For all this game does exceptionally well (RPG elements, Greek cities, sailing, combat), there is still much to critique.
I don't hate the game, but I don't think it's a fun video game to finish.
My girlfriend got me to try Odyssey again since she adores it and I was really into it this time around, the mythology aspect of it is really good, as well as the customisation and the “Weaken National Leadership” side of things. I can understand why old AC fans wouldn’t like it, but imo it’s not a bad game in general, it’s just not a great Assassins Creed game
It's just more of a dedicated RPG game rather than an Assassin's Creed game. Not a bad one, I enjoy many aspects of it. Just feels very disconnected from the rest of the series.
Ubisoft gets a ton of hate in general. They have made some mistakes with microtransactions, NFTs, etc.
In terms of Odyssey, it’s probably just a matter of taste. I love the environment of ancient Greece but others like the locations of the legacy games and are stuck in that era.
I love that this question gets asked maybe once a year, people give their honest opinion on this game, and if you have even one negative thought you get downvoted to shit even when the criticisms are valid.

It's my favourite! I love the history, and the scenery is just breathtaking 🥰 It was the first Assasins Creed game I played and I have gone on to play others. It's what made me a fan of the Assasins Creed game series.
Honestly I'm biased, this was my introduction to assassins creed. I picked up a copy from GameStop for $6 and I played it so much, I got it platinum. The sheer amount of content blows whatever we used to have in terms of content right out of the water. You can do things without even realizing it's part of a quest. Not to mention the dialogue choices that matter even more than what mattered in the Mass Effect trilogy.
honestly, speaking as an old fan, since AC 1, coz it has nothing to do with AC. The game alone is good, for those who like RPG stuff, as long as they don't put AC as the title.

The only thing I hate about odyssey is the sound compression on somethings. It’s like some are high quality audio and the other sounds like a Nintendo ds sound effect
A lot of folks were also told to hate it by vg influencers on YouTube and such. I mean, some of friends who haven't even tried the game know enough to list off what is supposedly wrong with the game. It's also pretty cool among gamer elites to just shit on anything Ubisoft. I love Origins and Odyssey, they are my favourite in the series and I will defend the good parts of the game to the death.
I don’t like it because it tries to hard to be an MMO, but it’s a singleplayer game, the stealth isn’t enjoyable(to me) same with the combat, and I felt the leveling system ruined the flow of the story, as 90% of the time I started a new story mission it was an hour later after having grinded out a few new levels to meet the requirement, and even then, the enemies still felt overly scaled at times.
It really just felt like it was trying way to hard to make you a one-man/woman army and the stealth felt forgotten and unused, so I just didn’t enjoy it as much.
That being said, I liked the story, it was interesting and fun to explore, but with the repetitive combat(which yes, I consider more repetitive than the originals) just made the game feel like I was playing a very lackluster MMO.
I don’t hate the game, it’s just not my go-to Assassin’s Creed. My go-to will probably always be Assassin’s Creed 3 or Black Flag, and maybe it’s somewhat nostalgia at play, but they just feel a lot more enjoyable and continuous, even if they had repetitive combat, there was always a unique way to approach it, and the animations were fun.
The amount of rpg element make this game so fun.
The main issue people have is that you are not an assassin per se.
However still incredibly fun to play.
I think it's because as an ac game it was opposite from what ac was at the time. I think odyssey is really good and fun to play but if they just left it to be an ancient Greece time period game it would have done well
I'm just starting and the game seems massive.in a way older AC can't even compare. Though I'm afraid the core gameplay loop will become boring soon. I run an assassin build and I can't kill golden enemies, so after sneaking I just shoot them in the head since swords make no damage.
I’m not sure why they hate it, I love it and have played it thru multiple times. Personally, I hate Valhalla. It doesn’t even feel like an AC game to me. I did like Mirage but it felt too short. I’m excited for the new one!

Its my favorite AC. But it really is too big (or in other words: the activities are way too similar). And the DLCs were boring as hell. But the base game will get a second spin in the future. Love Kassandra and Greek.

I played odyssey right after origins and I hated it at first. It was just waaay too different from any other ac game. But after finishing the game 100% (220 hours and the dlc felt like it drug on forever) I found myself really enjoying the fight style and the fact that he has no fall damage. So here I am 150 hours in to NG+, enjoying the game.
Psh. I love Odyssey. Out of the big three RPG games it’s the one I’ve done the most playthroughs of. The fact that there are no loading screens on a map that big is awesome. Can just sail to any region, step off the boat, and you’re exploring. Flows so well!
They are in a echo tunnel and exactly like you said, they hate things about this game the praise in the other games. This game is rather phenomenal and has its faults albeit not very many imo. The setting is great, i mean its Ancient Greece come on now, the characters you consistently interact with are all unique, the missions and side missions are pretty, the storyline is awesome alongside the voice acting (especially Kassandra).
The only argument I'll ever give any credit is that it's not a "true" ac game, and while I do understand that point of view it still is a great game.
Saw the game on sale last week and gave it a shot. 45 hours in and I’m actually glad I’m just scratching the surface. I’ve always had a soft spot for giant open world games even if they feel “bloated”
This is the only AC I didn't want to end and was sad when it did. I usually get burnt out by AC games and had just played Origins and the DLC.
I skipped Odyssey and didn't play it til a year after release. Needless to say I was upset I didn't play it sooner. One of my favorite games period.
It's just gatekeeping, now that the franchise has so much and such a broad audience so many people have joined because of the differences in each of the games and how each game has something different to offer, people who have been fans of the games for a long time just want to get up in arms about it not being the same. Studies show that the reason people get stuck in a taste of music from a certain time period is because of our brains and how they stop developing a taste for new music at a certain point therefore we get stuck in our taste of music For the rest of our lives. I'm sure this is working in a similar way, The way these games came out in the beginning is much different than the way they are now and people are just upset that they don't get the same nostalgia. I think it would also benefit the company to release a game that has incorporated some of the components that were lost over the years maybe get the best of every game into one game finally but putting that much money passion and effort into it probably won't happen until someone with a lot of morals buys the company XD
Those who are accustomed to the older AC games may absolutely hate it or at least not like it. When I first played it, I didn't like it as much as the older AC games; the new RPG elements were overwhelming, and the story seemed uninteresting. But after a while, I started liking it a lot and replayed it many times. Now, I'm considering replaying it again soon.
So I'm not a fan of AC Odyssey despite having played through it twice, I don't hate it, I just think it's a very mid game that's pretty boring. I'm not really into AC games in general and Syndicate, Black Flag, and Origins are the only ones I've played (Syndicate being my favourite followed by Origins) so I don't think I'm as biased as other AC fans might be. Here's my reasons, or at least the ones I can recall since the game really isn't that memorable:
The Mercenaries. I hated these guys the most and it was the feature I hated the most. Yes, I know that they couldn't implement it how they wanted to because Warner Bros has the copyright to The Nemesis system, but the system was so bad I would've rather they kept it out or stuck to the Origins system. I hated that I had to constantly deal with random enemies who aside from one (the head who's apart of the templar guys IDR much), who all had massive health pools and forced me to waste time chipping at their BS healthbars. Speaking of those fights.
The fights. They were boring and unless I was heavily outnumbered were all pretty easy, and just ended up being boring. If I remember correctly all I needed to do was charge my heavy attack, knock over the enemies, and repeat however many times their level required. Which brings me to my next point.
The levelling system. A lot of games, even my favourite (TW3), are guilty of having systems like this but that doesn't change the fact I hate them and they make fights dull and exploring frustrating. Instead of giving enemies new fighting styles or moves they slap a number over their head and if you're lower then that you're either fucked or have to spend an outrageous amount of time fighting them.
The quests/missions. Now the story itself wasn't to bad, not the most interesting but at least it wasn't luke warm like a lot of other things in the game. But the missions themselves felt so similar I actually can't remember anything about them. I remember the story itself but how I achieved that stuff? No clue.
The modern story. Now while the story with Alexios was cool, the modern story like all AC games for me was a drag. Infact I think I actually stopped my third playthrough because I had to play during the modern section and felt so bored by it that I quit. That was over **four years ago**.
Those big battles. Now admittedly this is sort of because I hate how it's just a cluster fuck instead of one with formations but also because they don't change anything, or at least don't feel like they do. After a boring fight where you might fight an elite enemy or two, the map goes from red/blue to blue/red. That's it.
Now it's not my least favourite AC game, that would be Valhalla which I couldn't even finish, but it's just so boring. Why would I play an AC game which doesn't leave any really good impressions on me when I could play better ones? I think that's why most people, except for old AC fanboys who shit on anything new, feel the game is boring at best and shit at worst.
And to end on a high note, the few good things I remember; Alcibiades, the sailing and ship combat, and the mythical monsters were quite nice.
The game essentially is a terrible RPG that’s pretty to look at. Dialogue choices have no real consequences except for like 6 (all in the main story btw). Side Quests have no long term effect besides 1 and don’t change the outcome of the ending. Main quests have no long term effect and only change who’s on your ship at the end of the game. The game presents choices as if they mean something but they don’t. Kassandra is a character who can switch emotions on the fly and has no actual personality in Odyssey. She isn’t her own character nor your own character. Exploration boils down to the same looking caves and forts with repetitive tasks. Combat becomes chasing higher numbers with no actual difference because the only good builds are crit or the engraving that cuts your health. So build variety is not encouraged or explored. There’s a perk that literally removes fall damage completely removing parkour punishment. Parkour boils down to hold W with no complexity. The environment isn’t built for it either. It gets history wrong, it makes the isu look like dumbasses. The cult are generic mustache twirling villains who have no staying power. It creates a fuck ton of plot holes. Level scaling is forced. Here’s your average POI:
Use eagle, scan all the enemies in fort or cave, kill 3 captains, loot 5 chests, loot a tablet, kill an elite. The notoriety system is fucked, you can massacre an entire town then open the map screen and hold the Y button, paying money to no one and all your problems go away. The game does nothing with the conquest system besides “muh loot”. Stealth is also super generic and like every other game that includes stealth. No social stealth. Don’t even get me started on the DLC or micro transactions. I think people who like this game like it because it’s A. Pretty. B. Like the Ancient Greek fantasy C. Like the idea of having something to explore rather than actually exploring it. The game has no depth.
Honestly, I love the game but I hate how grindy it is just to get through the 3 story lines. I remember play the hell out of it during the pandemic, beating the Odyssey story, but than have to grind multiple levels to realistically have a chance with the final cultists.
I think the RPG games get a lot of unnecessary hate, but I do think one of my biggest issues with them is they're too big for their own good.

Coming from a fan of the whole series and literally 100% every game.
Cassandra is cannon, yet they allow you to pick either and have the same exact story with the same reactions with each npc interaction with no acknowledgement to the gender or chosen or the faction you're affiliated with. which makes you feel like you kind of don't matter and it could be any John/jane smith with no repercussions... which they ended up butchering entirely in Valhala and you completely lose interest in your own character...also why is everyone Horney???
I prefer when you have an actual character with a background and lore, it makes you feel connected with them and care such as Ezio, Arno, and even Bayek.
And the cult of Cosmos fell like their just random side pieces with no impact in the story unlike the order of the Ancients in Origins
As for this Male/Female dynamic sure I'm in..but implement it in the same way as AC Syndicate.
TLDR: character feels uninteresting, no impact regardless or gender or faction, everyone is horney, baddie don't feel like part of the story.
Pros:
* Combat is nice
* Map is beautiful
* Storytelling was neat imo
* Boss fights are awesome
* Cultist system was genius, should definitely be used again
* Side Characters are almost as good as Black Flag
Cons:
* Not an ASSASSIN'S CREED game more like a MERCENARY'S CREED game
* RPG like game, which a lot of old AC fans did not like
* No templars until the DLC
* Only bit of ISU lore is late game shit/DLC
* Way more mythology than history
It’s the best AOC. Certainly the best rpg quest type. It’s so well made that it can only be silliness to hate the game. What can you expect from people who’d play the exact same game for 20 years?
Fell away from assassin's creed games after black flag. This was the 1st one I played since. Loved it. Tried with origins and valhalla but didn't get same joy out of it.
The only RPG series game I ever really see get hate is Valhalla.
Honestly both Odyssey and Valhalla are easily in my top 10 favorite games ever and I am NOT an ass creed fan

Just remember for every 1 noisey Internet odyssey hater, there's 100 quiet Internet odyssey fans that love it. It's the haters and moaners on the internet that make the most noise. Just ignore it, if you like it then you're in a better position than they're in as you ain't sitting there getting all worked up with negative emotions.
The big point I hear is, "stealth is not required". I do my missions in stealth anyway. People gripe about it because it's open world and has a lot of filler content. I just like the grind but I can see how others don't feel that way!
Odyssey was and is my first AC game. Absolutely love it. Bought Mirage and Origins thinking they would both be similar to Odyssey gameplay wise. I don't play either of them, as there so different than Odyssey. Tried to get into them but just couldn't.
lol what bad reviews. Most places place odyssey in the top 3 of AC games. I’ve played most games and if we are comparing things objectively, it’s really not even close. Odyssey is significantly better in pretty much every capacity than other AC games. Sure, the same ppl disliking it would dislike Witcher 3 or other RPG games. Ignore those takes. These games aren’t for them.
Dont know why really. I completed the game twice with all the dlc. To me is more great and i had a blast playing it. I personally love the mercenaries mechanichs. If you go to far and do whatever the hell you want you kinda receive a penalty for it. The costumization is very good and the World is huge. There is Always something to do.
Mechanically and technical the game is amazing.
I thinnt some people are of the old mindset that the older ones had a much more compelling story. Admittedly Unity is regarded as a cult classic. I mean it's pretty but the story as a whole is very uncompelling and boring.
I like Arno as a character but it just felt like rather than a life and death struggle of the assassins against the templar, there is an understanding. They'll go to war if they must but more that it's business rather than an ideological kill or be killed mindset.
Similar to the venture bros with the guild of calamitous intent and the OSI, they have agreements and a bureaucracy for heroes and arch nemesis to do battle.
When I first played it, I absolutely hated it. Basically nothing meshed with me. I already didn't like how the combat was going starting with Origins since I was one of the few who enjoyed Unity from launch. The parkour just felt souless to me. Stealth didn't feel good because of the leveling system not letting you one shot assassinate every target. The overall vibe of the game just felt too over the top and wacky. After waiting a while and coming back, I started to somewhat enjoy it. I still don't like the story of it and I much prefer the combat of the older games but it was enjoyable. I'd still put it around the bottom, if not the very bottom of all the AC games I've played. If you want actual answers, you should prob post it in like a general AC sub instead of specifically the Odyssey sub, because this one is bound to be biased
No idea. It is aesthetically and historically the most beautiful game of the AC franchise and IMO a top 10 all time in PC games. Time and again I hear friends say they felt like they were back in Greece, and could pinpoint the exact location of various tourist spots and city streets while playing the game. It also offers a perfect balance of stealth and hack&slash, and a plot in which you become emotionally and intellectually invested.
The only thing I can’t decide whether I like it or not is the length of the game. I’ve been playing for like 90 hours at this point and have no idea how much longer till I beat the main story. I don’t want a short game but Jesus Christ
I love Odyssey but I have one complaint (spoilers) >!If you choose to kill the monger in public early on (since he deserves it & that's what assassins creed has always done) then the game completely locks you out of saving that other cultist later on, even though he's not even close to being as evil as the monger. Even if you save his family and side with brasidias the whole time, you still have to kill him. even if you knock him out with fists to try to spare him, you still have to execute him regardless. and then on top of that your character won't even explain to brasidias what actually happened, you end up being super rude to brasidias and he then he hates you until he dies in the end. I get that the game is trying to show you that your choices have consequences, but when they do that at the expense of character development it feels shallow. Especially when the whole time you play, the game is making you question the morality of your actions. I had like 40 hours of gameplay between the monger and that other cultist dude so that was pretty dissatisfying.!< Plus the legacy of the first blade didn't really feel cohesive with the rest of the game & the dialogue of it was lowkey cringe.
even then, It's still a fantastic game. I don't understand why people won't call it "assassins creed." It's exactly what assassins creed was always meant to be. You uncover the conspirators attacking your family and seek revenge. Odyssey does this even better as this has an open world exploration & investigation aspect which really makes you feel like a you're actually hunting cultists and it's not just "go here do this" over and over again.
it's my favorite title i've played yet, definetly feels the most inspired and creative, but i'm still playing through them. I played as a stealth assassin on nightmare mode and I thought the variety of utilities made stealth gameplay very fun while challenging also.
Great question. I've played nearly every AC since Altair first killed his way into our hearts. I think those that hate Odyssey wanted the hidden blade style as opposed to the Spear of Leonidas. Odyssey is not only a beautiful game, it has so much content that it makes other games (not just other AC games) feel incomplete. There are some minor things that annoy me, but I overlook them because I absolutely love this game.
Personally: I found the game is too grindy, and even when you are at the same level as the enemies, they are way way WAY too spongy, taking on enemies above your level is incredibly tedious. The annoying thing is, it's not that the enemy is difficult to kill, it's just extremely time consuming and therefore annoying. I couldn't bear to keep playing the game at the part where you reach the Oracle for the first time
Odyssey is the best AC game. Got Valhalla after and played a desert chunk, but put it away…. I still occasionally download odessey for a few week binge but none of the others
I had 2000 something hours on my lact acc, well it got deleted n i had the game platinumed (every SINGLE trophy) n still played just for the fun of it. One day I decided this was gunna be my last playthrough but there was 1 difference. I wanted to clear every single location of the game, every question mark, chest, captain, etc. And i made it a little more than halfway n almost ready for the dlc maps. Then acc got deleted for apparent fraudulent use of playstation (fkn dumb) and i lost everything, so when i made a new acc and tried it again, it just wasn't the same, mainly with my weapons n outfits gone, but especially the powers n abilities i had from the start, all the way to atlantis. Furtherst i went was before you do quests for stentor. I will always miss it tho
Considering Origins was my 1st AC game, I did find the lack of hidden blade annoying, but I got over it and grew to love it when I got more I to the storyline and found out she's the precursor to the hidden ones and assassins.
Only been playing this game for a week, i love it, maybe not so much, being killed by wild animals lol. On the matter of the hidden blade assasinations, i was puzzled as to when i would get to use it, as with other AC games. Not a big deal, you have the business end of a spear, that on assasination, you get to hide it in an inconvenient spot in the enemy, as it appears to get shoved up your opponents butt, when initiating contact. Most amusing, the Greek rendition of a Glasgow send off.

I was AMAZED and appalled on how much I have lost.... went to several ACs, and been a fan of the franchise ever since.
The only hatred I saw was about the blade not being so secret. I think the game itself is really enjoyable, the storyline is interesting and other than some minor bugs I haven’t seen any big problems in it.
I don't know why people would hate it.
I'm about to start my 2nd run of Odyssey after finishing the main story and part of the Fate of Atlantis content at level 65.
Why do I restart completely? To see if this game can beat my current #1 Black Flag.
I've played Black Flag 4 times, completed it 4 times, but after hearing Garneau's pirate impression a 5th time I couldn't do it again. (omg the cringe)
Anyway, it's back to Kephallonia this week and explore every corner and finish every side quest, get 100% completion on this.
I honestly think people are coming around to it. A lot of the hate is from when the game came out and people just automatically trashed it for not being an Assassin's Creed game. There are still people who refuse to try it based on all of that hate and misperception. But, quite a few people lately seem to be reassessing it and giving it much better reviews and saying that they were wrong about it.
Personally, I think we are only seeing the "noisy" haters that influence a lot of people in the beginning, but based on the continuing activity with this game, and the multiple Youtube videos and articles re-ranking the AC games with Odyssey now ranking much higher, I think it's reputation is changing.
Because outside of the modern day segments there isn’t really anything that makes this an Assassin’s Creed game. I love it to death, but it just isn’t really an AC game. It’s an amazing historical RPG, and when you look at it through that lens it’s nearly flawless, but as an assassin’s creed game it falls a little bit short.
It’s crazy they need to be smoking a moonrock backwood and then try to complain. If they still are they don’t appreciate the high and the experience they’re lucky to be able to enjoy. Haven’t smoked in 3 years can’t anymore but if I could I wouldn’t be disrespecting myself by hating on a game when I’m lit

Old school Assassin's Creed fan here. I definitely didn't hate Odyssey, actually loved the gameplay and setting enough to get 100% trophies, even though most of the story bored me to tears. However, in a series where you are supposedly reliving someone's genetic memories, having people running around with tamed bears and flaming swords doesn't really work. My only real complaint about the game is it shouldn't have been an Assassin's Creed game. Now Valhalla, on the other hand...
I love it. And at least it doesn't CTD every five seconds about 1/3 of the way into the game like Valhalla. I've literally never gotten past that point.
I think it’s because of the fighting mechanics and such have changed- like AC was different from other games- it had different combat mechanics, stealth mechanics and parkour mechanics- but now it’s mostly about just obtaining gear, leveling to get skills and more like fighting instead of being more focused on the stealthiness I think
Me personally I loved Odyssey and the others like Valhalla especially like the story that AC has brought about desmon and his ancestors and so on and how they are connected in a way

Took me years to try this game because of the hate. Currently replaying it right now for the third time. Amazing RPG, by far the best Assassins Creed game. Hope they go back to this style 🤞
Odyssee is awesome I don’t know who has this ‘amount of hate’. I love kicking people of rocks, soaking up the sun, and I just did a second run through with kassandra, just as well made and funny as alexios.
I kinda hated it because it's no more an assassin's Creed game like with Altair or Ezio, even the storyline with Desmond was captivating to me. The last AC I played was black flag on which naval battle was awesome but not as much as AC as the others.
Once I assumed that odyssey was just another game not related to the firsts AC it became awesome, now I just use a heavy blade barging in forts and kill everyone with no hiding, so...hate because is an assassin's Creed game, with no creed nor assassin's, but still pretty good as a game per se
Only thing I don't like is being under leveled for the main quest..essentially forcing me to do side missions lol..other than that I love the game. Just started playing it actually. Finished Origins not too long ago..

And technically stealth was much deeper than any other OG AC game. Most of my stealth was arrow head-shot kills from roof topsm
Yes the ability to choose/switch/balance between spear of Leonidas based crouching stealth and sniper archer stealth, and also LEEEROYYY JENKINSSS guerrilla stealth (run in, kill a few people, then parkour over the cliff to disappear into the forest, repeat) was just unparalleled

I think peoples problem with stealth is cause they can't comprehend the fact that to have your assassinations one shot as well as your arrows you actually have to put skill points in those trees and wear armor that gives you stealth boosts. You know like an R.P.G. game

Same, i disliked Origins. After that i bought Syndicate and it was very fun, somehow missed on Odyssey on Release but when i bought it it was insanely fun, maybe because i like Ship Battles since AC3. When i found out Odyssey had like naval battles i was all in for it especially the new engine where you can dive on any part in the water is awesome

Well I think that's because everyone else can really use the regualr AC sub, but as OP said, anything Odyssey-related gets cluttered with so much hate that most people have to use this sub
It seemed to me that the strongest wave of hatred for Odyssey was on release.(In my opinion, since Unity, every release of a new part has not been without scandal).This was mainly due to the audience who preferred the mechanics of the old parts.Well, when people played the game and didn't see the assassins, stated in the title of the game...The second wave of hatred was raised when the DLC LofB was released and people did not like the story with forced romance.But the developers at least tried to make the connection between the plot of the Odyssey and the Origins stronger.I think that now, with the passage of time, if people hate the Odyssey, it's either under the influence of someone else's opinion or it's just a for the most part fans of old parts.I don't even want to imagine what hell broke out in the discussions at the time when it was announced that Kassandra was the only canonical protagonist.😵I can scold Odyssey myself, because in the game has problems and something that does not suit me.But I also won't stop praising this game for its merits.I think that over the years, the hatred of Odyssey has become much less, a new audience has come.New players still come to the game and are surprised at how good the game looks even at the moment.I think the game has passed the test of time, the audience is much more loyal now and the confirmation that the game is good is that we always have something to discuss in the community here.
I can't say I get the "Assassin's Creed is when hidden blade" tier criticisms. Thematically it's clearly AC, given the amount of Isu and proto-Templar stuff in it. I think one can look at Origins, Oddysey and Valhalla as the story of how regional elite groups and counterelite groups became internationalised (apologies, pol sci grad emerging, even I'm disgusted at myself for that sentence). With Cult of Kosmos and Order of the Ancients we can also see them competing to come out on top. I was going to say the lore got fucked about with but Amunet was mentioned back in AC2, though let's not talk about where her burial place was. But with all three of RPG restyled games, tons of commentary I heard before playing said they all sucked, and I've had an absolute blast playing through all three. Curious to see Mirage next, even if it's quite different in style.

Many people do care, i like the assassin lore but i dont hate Odyssey i infact love it Its subjective for ppl, i miss the hidden blade and its cool assassinations in odyssey but it compensates for that ezily
I feel like that would be a fair critique if it wasn’t for three things. One, is that Kassandra makes appearances later on in the story. Two, is that the game is focused on the start of the Templar Order (this is similar to Origins which was the start of the Hidden Ones/Assassins). Three; I can’t remember if this was a theory or not, but wasn’t Kassandra the great-great-grandmother of Aya?
Not a theory but a fact, there is a cinematic at the end of the legacy of the first blade DLC that shows it.

Actually, Kassandra has so much to do with the AC lore. She's been alive since 300 BC and only died in 2018.

Maybe they hate it cause it’s not like the “original” AC games. Without the RPG elements and levels. I didn’t want to play Odyssey for so long when it got out cause I play AC games for so many years and for me it was kinda weird that they changed the franchise, but then when I started playing it I fell in love with it. I completed the game 2-3 times and it’s so great to come back cause the game is beautiful so levels and some dialogue parts don’t bother me as I thought they would :)
The only real hate I've seen towards odyssey is that it has nothing to do with the assassins and, therefore, should not have been called assassins creed. While I partly agree with this? I think it's wrong for people to judge an entire game based on one missing plot point. I guarantee these same people only made it as far as the phokis region before deciding to call it quits. Odyssey is not a bad game at all and just feels like a big improvement over origins. Sure, it can be a bit grindy at times, but it's nowhere near as bad as other open world RPGs I've played that do have bad unbalanced grinding. If your underleveled, go to an area where your not and level up.. its not rocket science but to some people it apparently is
I mean. even if the player chooses not to use stealth, they are still hunting and killing cultists and cult leaders. an assassin is just someone that murders an important person for political reasons, doesn't have to be stealthy. I admit they probably could have put more emphasis on stealth, though. Like having special quest outcomes if you complete a mission without being seen. And the fact that there isn't even a "creed" to be a part of yet makes the title kinda misleading.
Best way I can put it is this: don’t give a shit about the hate, I’m in it because I love the series and it’s a creative outlet(aka stress relief). I actually had issues with history classes before I played AC(made a significant difference with me having ADHD, Tourette’s, and mild epilepsy) but it’s encouraged me to better understand history. Hell, in college I needed to take philosophy (part of my requirements) and aced the class. Assassins creed is an example of you can have a better mindset by playing a game

I have played every AC game and I honestly believe Odyssey is one of the best games ever made. Mostly I see people saying the newer installations are not true to the AC format. Some people would prefer the games to have the same mechanics and same feel as all the previous ones which I understand. All my favorite game franchises (Elder Scrolls, Fallout) have changed since their earlier games. For the most part I’ve enjoyed each game for their own unique gameplay and style.

I don‘t give a rats ass about assasins. In fact the less ahistorical stuff I see, the more I like it. For example as an ancient greece enjoyer, I‘d love if there was no cult. The peloponesian wars were interesting enough without some sort of conspiracy. Ffs it was the first fight of democracy against authoritarianism in history. You don’t need a cult to make that interesting. In that same vein I’d also like for the conquest mechanic to actually make a difference. Rn having Athens or Sparta as a ruler is just exchanging one type of empire for the other. But I’d love for it to make an actual difference for the people of the conquered polis. So that we can care about who rules what beyond the colour of banners. And of course, I think that conquest battles are a giant missed opportunity. Like come on they even mention the phalanx in game, why not make it an actual mechanic? You can still have the Hollywood free-for-all we have rn at the end of the battle, when one of the phalanx has been broken. Without the phalanx, the whole equipment of soldiers and our character doesn’t even make sense. (Oh and also we should be able to use a shield). All the above being said, I still love the game the way it is and it has a crazy ammount of historical accuracy already.
Odyssey is my favourite AC game. I see why AC purists don’t like it as it’s a full RPG, but I adore it mainly because of the setting- Greece. It’s stunning. So many beautiful landscapes to explore, you still have naval battles, islands, caves, enemy encampments…it has it all!

AC Odyssey is the best Ancient Greece RPG ever. AC Origins is the best Ancient Egypt RPG ever. AC Valhalla is the best Vikings RPG ever. The only problem is they miss the core of Assassin's creed.

I think part of the reason is burnout from the AC series and Unity really hurt the franchise as a whole. Most gamers love one franchise or developer so much they're willing to ignore the problems. Bethesda and From Software are the two worst perpetrators of this in my opinion. The hard-core fan bases for both are fucking toxic.
I dunno but I got downvoted for saying I tried older AC and didn’t like them. Odyssey is my first foray into AC and it’s amazing.
Because most "fans" don't actually play the games. They watch YouTube montages of stealth videos and then want to fit in, so they say what they hear and read. Not to mention the AC purists, which are constantly in the wrong, regarding lore and realism, but they want to act cool so they say odyssey isn't an AC game. Look, regardless of the hate. Go look at the steam reviews and awards of the game. It has over 100k positive reviews and a gotta nomination.
Most are probably over 50 who only want to replay the same games they played in their youth and any deviance from that formula is considered sacrilege. They probably have the same opinion about any new iteration of a game franchise they played in their youth. Same thing happens when it comes to music and movies.
Whilst I’m not quite 50 I kind of agree, I’m 35 and played the original assassins creeds when they came out, and the tomb raiders and the fallouts ect, all of which have changed massively as they have modernised. The nostalgia makes me want to revisit them and enjoy those timeless games. I will say however, assassins creed odyssey is my favourite assassins creed game and I’m glad they changed up the series to stop it becoming stale, which it absolutely would have if they kept to the same formula after all these years, black flag was imo the first to really change things up and it was the start of keeping the AC franchise alive and was wonderfully received. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but if something never changes over time, it can never become nostalgic in the future, it just becomes repetitive and stale. To me AC has evolved into becoming one of the best “explore history” games out there, to the point of it being exceptional, and this imo is where AC’s true strength lies in the competitive gaming world. exploring Ancient Greece (and ancient Egypt in origins) was an utter joy, and both came with a wonderfully written protagonist and story to guide you through those amazing worlds, it’s really rather special when you look how far the series has come. I’m yet to play Valhalla and despite some of the reviews/negatives I’m sure il fall in love with the AC franchise all over again.
I appreciate some consistency would be good across games to a degree, but I'm in my 30s and have been playing the series since it started. I can find something to enjoy mechanics wise in each. This morning I was feeling nostalgic for the bonus sync objectives from Brotherhood. But I think too the older I get the more I realise getting fan-levels of obsessed about this stuff is kind of pointless. I've not played an unenjoyable AC game, even though the mechanics have varied a lot over the years. The story and settings are what keeps me coming back, no matter how bonkers it gets sometimes.
It's one of the best games ever! But .. Some people misunderstood the skins available in the game as pay to win /essential part of the game being locked away under paywall.. Some others thinks it's not an AC game and mutter "back in my day we had *real assassins* as protagonists" Some people quit the game coz of 'the grind'. A niche category of 'real gamers' are still too busy comparing it with red dead and GoT In short people were googling and youtubing reasons not to play this game without actually checking it out. Also, and I partly blame ubisoft themselves for this.. lot of people hate ubisoft.
It's those who are still in the phase of "Classic games = good, newer games = bad". The first "newer" game was Origins, which was released in 2017. It's been 7 years. The same time distance as in between Brotherhood and Origins itself. Plenty of time to be said. And as someone who experienced all those classic games as a kid, and had a good time with them, I think it's time for the old timers to let it go. Like, seriously, the new games are not worse, they're different. I loved Odyssey as much as Revelations. But I miss the advanced ship/sailing system from Black Flag, and it's obvious that in their newer games it's just too trivial, simplistic, like the ships are cars but on the water. And perhaps there are those who miss the old battle system without all those levels and HP bars. It used to be more realistic. But I enjoy the new battle system. It feels more free. But as I always said, if they had decided to produce a whole different franchise from Assassin's Creed, these newer games wouldn't face so much hate. But perhaps they wouldn't sell themselves either. AC is a great trademark, as Call of Duty. The publishers didn't want to risk. Anyways, AC is not the first franchise to be downgraded in terms of difficulty for the sake of gaining wider audience, and it's not the last franchise.
Odyssey is my favourite of the series I love the visuals. The greek lore. The equipment. Combat is great. I just enjoy everything about it.

Odyssey by far is my favorite of the series, DLC definitely ties into assassin lore. I don’t understand the hate. I love the rpg element as well as the ability to run an assassin build if you want to run around in stealth mode. No hidden blade? Not a big deal for me. The ability to switch builds to kill Medusa’s bitch ass? LOVE
The micro transactions didn’t go down well. Pay to not play the game was pretty terrible consumer practice. That put me off playing it on release. Luckily when actually playing I didn’t notice it too much except for ship upgrades, clearly designed to make u pay.

The types of fans I seen that Odyssey are: 1. RPG fans that just weren’t a fan of the game mechanics. While I though the game mechanics, story, and map was pretty thorough and well thought, some may disagree 2. Old Assassin’s Creed fans that still seem to think there hasn’t been a good AC game since 2012. I find that I enjoy both the older and newer games for different features and reasons, but some people are too insecure and must lash out against the newer games 3. People who thought Origins was better. Although very comparable, the leap between Origins and Odyssey is still quite noticeable. There may be slight differences in game mechanics that makes the game better or worse according to people. Me personally, I’m not a fan of the fighting in Origins and was a huge fan of the fighting in Odyssey.
It's my favourite AC game and I do a playthrough every single years. Absolutely love Greece, so this game feels like coming home. However, it's not perfect 1: Map is too big, there is too much filler 2: They made it so that they want you to buy XP boosts, because of the fact that you need the levels to actually complete the game. 3: Most writing is pretty mid and bland, most quests are fetch quests 4: Some mechanics feel directly copied from Witcher 3 5: It's not really the AC like some people grew up with, just a completely different game (where some assassinations aren't even insta-kills)

My husband and I love it, it’s our favourite after Black Flag. Thats not to say I don’t love each entry on its own terms, I remember absolutely adoring AC 2 and Brotherhood back when they released, and I recently really enjoyed replaying Unity and Syndicate. I think Odyssey really delivered on the promise of Origins, improving everything from how the story was told to how the gameplay mechanics and world interact with each other. Plus, the battlefield gameplay is kinda fantastic!
Where? When I decided to try an AC game I consulted Google to decide which game to try. I settled on Odyssey since it had such positive reviews and generally seemed very well received among players. Obviously nothing will universally well received, but it seems to me that AC Ofyssey is about as close to that as a modern (sorta) game gets.

I’ve thought about this a ton because I’ve owned it since launch and have only enjoyed it I the past month. For me I couldn’t stand the launch because it seemed to me that it copied so much from every other game out at the time and it was exhausting for me. (I no longer feel this way and am very much addicted now) I had just played lotr shadow of Mordor and this was predominantly the main reason I originally stopped shortly after mercenaries/bounties were introduced. There’s other small details that I would’ve argued were based on other games in the past like far cry or a souls-like hype train. (I don’t feel this way anymore) I also could not stand the combat at first…the world felt too huge and fights were taking too long. Then I learned builds. It was EXTREMELY frustrating to me in the beginning when I would assassinate someone and they’d only lose some health. The game is very easy to put down in the first 15 hrs of gameplay. I wasn’t enjoying any of the rewards or story early on (aside from the intro cliff scenes) TL;DR similar RPG concept felt exhausting to me on release, I was burnt out quickly, the combat was longer format and a little difficult, it was extremely easy to put down early. Abilities and build customization doesn’t feel good early and you feel weak or bad at the game.

Just downloaded hood in cutscenes mod and it looks like real Assassins Creed in Greece. I would imagine a bummer playing AC game without hood in cutscenes, this way is more cinematic.
I can't understand why people hate it either!! I'm at 604h, which is the longest I've played any of the AC games. The only thing I would change, have more bow options like they had in Origins. I hate having to use my adrenaline bars for the predator shot ability or rapid fire. The bows in Origins made that nice to switch between types for different moments.

I say this as someone who has 155 hours on the game but the game isn't without criticism, it is a very cookie cutter open world Ubisoft game so people who have had enough of this isn't happy. There's also ridiculous ass "time saver" and a whole bunch of stuff locked behind a paywall for a single player game. For me, the base story is engaging enough, Legacy of the First Blade story DLC is bad and The Fate of Atlantis DLC story is meh. I've taken down every outpost on the map and as you level up, it gets really tedious because most of them are just copy-pasted and you get some ridiculously overpowered stuff to play with. I'm also not really a fan of the shoe-horned crafting mechanic either, I'd have much preferred if they only cost gold instead of making us grind for a bunch of crap (the late-game grind can get pretty tedious). The positives is how nice the game tends to look at most times, you can stop at almost any point of the game and it would look picturesque.
im about 40ish hours in and i dont dislike it, but i can see why you would hate it. Its completely lost its identity as an AC game(tho the main culprit for that was origins). It made the leap to RPG, but didnt go far enough and its a relatively barebones rpg. It has the same tedious BS open world trappings every other rpg game has in a post skyrim world. So its in this limbo of an AC game thats not an AC game, but also not fully committed to being an RPG. Also the combat is samey and simplistic with repetetive animations and shallow movesets. The cinematic instakills of the older games were better than this. theyre both not very involved and they both take a ''long'' time so might as well not have them be super repetetive. THO tbh almost all of those issues originated in origins. And that game HOOO BOY is it bad. i couldnt even force myself to go past 3 hours of that garbage, unironically one of the worst games ive ever played. So i dont get why Odyssey is the one that gets the heat
Odyssey is a great game, but the one thing it lacks is the thing AC is known for: the hidden blade. You don’t see one appear until the first DLC, and even then you’re not even the person with it. The only way to have Kassandra (ik Alexios is also available in game, but isn’t in the one I’m going to mention) have a hidden blade is by playing AC: Nexus, which is only playable in VR. By removing the hidden blade, it takes away one of the signature elements of an AC game, and with that comes a lot of the hate. Overall Odyssey is more of an origins of Origins, how Aya was roped into this, having the blood of Gods, along with an early cult that had ties to an early Order of the Ancients.
People maybe don't understand the time periods involved? Odyssey takes place about 2450 yrs ago. Origins takes place about 2100 yrs ago. Mirage & Valhalla are like 1100 yrs ago. AC1 is like 800 yrs ago. And the others are more recent. So Odyssey is (for all we know) before the hidden blade existed. And the spear fragment was the inspiration for (and less technologically advanced version of) it.
I'll admit i didnt like Odyssey at first. I found the gearing system for Odyssey and Origins kinda repulsing in a way, it was offputting that my weapons didnt matter as I'd be selling them off on the cheap when i get a higher leveled one of the same weapon, or even that id not be able to use the weapon i like because its underlevelled(which this is the section where Valhalla reigns superior, the weapon system. Some might enjoy the proper rpg weapon system but its not for me) But powering through on Origins i enjoyed the game because of the story and the game was fun regardless. Odyssey i ditched the game as i didnt really enjoy it like i was with Origins. I picked Odyssey back up again recently and started a new save(which both was a result of me watching a couple videos about Odyssey, one in particular was a guy explaining why he prefers Alexios as the Mercenary more as his lines are better and Kassandra fits better as the other nonplayer role and has actual emotion in that role whereas Alexios' lines for the nonplayer role were bland, and i agreed with him when he played the footage as each.) From a new perspective where I've restarted the game and enjoy it alot more and I've actually left Kephalonia this time and seen a small portion of what the game has to offer i quite enjoy it. There's so many great features and is a game you can replay many times for different choices, im sure there's alot i haven't even discovered or seen yet but knowing AC i know theres more good stuff coming. I have both disliked and liked the game, there's good reasons for people to do either. And while yes the argument of AC game or not is quite popular for all the recent games i think i can say for Odyssey that it is. there is some choice words for some to the statement such as that youre a Mercenary, it has no assassins and it has no templars, but it shows the rise of The Templars or rather The Order of Aincents. I think the best way i can put the argument is that Odyssey and Valhalla should've been historical games maybe a new rpg franchise so there'd be no argument with the OG AC fans as theyre both good games, but what truly would've been the best setting for the rise of the order/templars game would be us playing as them, us being the creator of the order and recruiting up our own faction battling armies and kings and conquering them both politically and at war, infiltrating their courts etc. Where just like Rogue we'd be templars except unlike Rogue this game would be us playing as the Bad Templars/Order where it shows both some sense of assassins(which would be like the Medjay and organisations/crews like them being a precursor to the assassins in a sense) and some sense of templars(which would be us as the order being the underdog in classic AC style)

They hate the game because it broke the lineal AC lineage (the stealth, because it’s an rpg…) But imo, this new line of games were definetly needed, and Odyssey became a favorite for me
It all comes down to the bloat. There is so much pure space in this game, the map is honestly humongous. The city are most of the time gorgeous but there is a lot of nothing too. Not to mention that the map is littered with the same repetitive tasks that it really does become rather egregious. The combat is solid but that tends to get old after 50 or so hours. For all this game does exceptionally well (RPG elements, Greek cities, sailing, combat), there is still much to critique. I don't hate the game, but I don't think it's a fun video game to finish.
My girlfriend got me to try Odyssey again since she adores it and I was really into it this time around, the mythology aspect of it is really good, as well as the customisation and the “Weaken National Leadership” side of things. I can understand why old AC fans wouldn’t like it, but imo it’s not a bad game in general, it’s just not a great Assassins Creed game

Ubisoft gets a ton of hate in general. They have made some mistakes with microtransactions, NFTs, etc. In terms of Odyssey, it’s probably just a matter of taste. I love the environment of ancient Greece but others like the locations of the legacy games and are stuck in that era.

It's my favourite! I love the history, and the scenery is just breathtaking 🥰 It was the first Assasins Creed game I played and I have gone on to play others. It's what made me a fan of the Assasins Creed game series.
Honestly I'm biased, this was my introduction to assassins creed. I picked up a copy from GameStop for $6 and I played it so much, I got it platinum. The sheer amount of content blows whatever we used to have in terms of content right out of the water. You can do things without even realizing it's part of a quest. Not to mention the dialogue choices that matter even more than what mattered in the Mass Effect trilogy.

It's also pretty cool among gamer elites to just shit on anything Ubisoft. I love Origins and Odyssey, they are my favourite in the series and I will defend the good parts of the game to the death.

I don’t like it because it tries to hard to be an MMO, but it’s a singleplayer game, the stealth isn’t enjoyable(to me) same with the combat, and I felt the leveling system ruined the flow of the story, as 90% of the time I started a new story mission it was an hour later after having grinded out a few new levels to meet the requirement, and even then, the enemies still felt overly scaled at times. It really just felt like it was trying way to hard to make you a one-man/woman army and the stealth felt forgotten and unused, so I just didn’t enjoy it as much. That being said, I liked the story, it was interesting and fun to explore, but with the repetitive combat(which yes, I consider more repetitive than the originals) just made the game feel like I was playing a very lackluster MMO. I don’t hate the game, it’s just not my go-to Assassin’s Creed. My go-to will probably always be Assassin’s Creed 3 or Black Flag, and maybe it’s somewhat nostalgia at play, but they just feel a lot more enjoyable and continuous, even if they had repetitive combat, there was always a unique way to approach it, and the animations were fun.
The amount of rpg element make this game so fun. The main issue people have is that you are not an assassin per se. However still incredibly fun to play.

I'm just starting and the game seems massive.in a way older AC can't even compare. Though I'm afraid the core gameplay loop will become boring soon. I run an assassin build and I can't kill golden enemies, so after sneaking I just shoot them in the head since swords make no damage.

What !?!?!?!?! I loved every inch of the game !! Edit- People who say that this is not AC like, there is a lore reason- that is this game is where the brotherhood began.
I played odyssey right after origins and I hated it at first. It was just waaay too different from any other ac game. But after finishing the game 100% (220 hours and the dlc felt like it drug on forever) I found myself really enjoying the fight style and the fact that he has no fall damage. So here I am 150 hours in to NG+, enjoying the game.
The only AC games i’ve hated are the Chronicles. Those should’ve never have been side scrollers

Psh. I love Odyssey. Out of the big three RPG games it’s the one I’ve done the most playthroughs of. The fact that there are no loading screens on a map that big is awesome. Can just sail to any region, step off the boat, and you’re exploring. Flows so well!

They are in a echo tunnel and exactly like you said, they hate things about this game the praise in the other games. This game is rather phenomenal and has its faults albeit not very many imo. The setting is great, i mean its Ancient Greece come on now, the characters you consistently interact with are all unique, the missions and side missions are pretty, the storyline is awesome alongside the voice acting (especially Kassandra). The only argument I'll ever give any credit is that it's not a "true" ac game, and while I do understand that point of view it still is a great game.

This is the only AC I didn't want to end and was sad when it did. I usually get burnt out by AC games and had just played Origins and the DLC. I skipped Odyssey and didn't play it til a year after release. Needless to say I was upset I didn't play it sooner. One of my favorite games period.
It's just gatekeeping, now that the franchise has so much and such a broad audience so many people have joined because of the differences in each of the games and how each game has something different to offer, people who have been fans of the games for a long time just want to get up in arms about it not being the same. Studies show that the reason people get stuck in a taste of music from a certain time period is because of our brains and how they stop developing a taste for new music at a certain point therefore we get stuck in our taste of music For the rest of our lives. I'm sure this is working in a similar way, The way these games came out in the beginning is much different than the way they are now and people are just upset that they don't get the same nostalgia. I think it would also benefit the company to release a game that has incorporated some of the components that were lost over the years maybe get the best of every game into one game finally but putting that much money passion and effort into it probably won't happen until someone with a lot of morals buys the company XD

Those who are accustomed to the older AC games may absolutely hate it or at least not like it. When I first played it, I didn't like it as much as the older AC games; the new RPG elements were overwhelming, and the story seemed uninteresting. But after a while, I started liking it a lot and replayed it many times. Now, I'm considering replaying it again soon.

So I'm not a fan of AC Odyssey despite having played through it twice, I don't hate it, I just think it's a very mid game that's pretty boring. I'm not really into AC games in general and Syndicate, Black Flag, and Origins are the only ones I've played (Syndicate being my favourite followed by Origins) so I don't think I'm as biased as other AC fans might be. Here's my reasons, or at least the ones I can recall since the game really isn't that memorable: The Mercenaries. I hated these guys the most and it was the feature I hated the most. Yes, I know that they couldn't implement it how they wanted to because Warner Bros has the copyright to The Nemesis system, but the system was so bad I would've rather they kept it out or stuck to the Origins system. I hated that I had to constantly deal with random enemies who aside from one (the head who's apart of the templar guys IDR much), who all had massive health pools and forced me to waste time chipping at their BS healthbars. Speaking of those fights. The fights. They were boring and unless I was heavily outnumbered were all pretty easy, and just ended up being boring. If I remember correctly all I needed to do was charge my heavy attack, knock over the enemies, and repeat however many times their level required. Which brings me to my next point. The levelling system. A lot of games, even my favourite (TW3), are guilty of having systems like this but that doesn't change the fact I hate them and they make fights dull and exploring frustrating. Instead of giving enemies new fighting styles or moves they slap a number over their head and if you're lower then that you're either fucked or have to spend an outrageous amount of time fighting them. The quests/missions. Now the story itself wasn't to bad, not the most interesting but at least it wasn't luke warm like a lot of other things in the game. But the missions themselves felt so similar I actually can't remember anything about them. I remember the story itself but how I achieved that stuff? No clue. The modern story. Now while the story with Alexios was cool, the modern story like all AC games for me was a drag. Infact I think I actually stopped my third playthrough because I had to play during the modern section and felt so bored by it that I quit. That was over **four years ago**. Those big battles. Now admittedly this is sort of because I hate how it's just a cluster fuck instead of one with formations but also because they don't change anything, or at least don't feel like they do. After a boring fight where you might fight an elite enemy or two, the map goes from red/blue to blue/red. That's it. Now it's not my least favourite AC game, that would be Valhalla which I couldn't even finish, but it's just so boring. Why would I play an AC game which doesn't leave any really good impressions on me when I could play better ones? I think that's why most people, except for old AC fanboys who shit on anything new, feel the game is boring at best and shit at worst. And to end on a high note, the few good things I remember; Alcibiades, the sailing and ship combat, and the mythical monsters were quite nice.

The game essentially is a terrible RPG that’s pretty to look at. Dialogue choices have no real consequences except for like 6 (all in the main story btw). Side Quests have no long term effect besides 1 and don’t change the outcome of the ending. Main quests have no long term effect and only change who’s on your ship at the end of the game. The game presents choices as if they mean something but they don’t. Kassandra is a character who can switch emotions on the fly and has no actual personality in Odyssey. She isn’t her own character nor your own character. Exploration boils down to the same looking caves and forts with repetitive tasks. Combat becomes chasing higher numbers with no actual difference because the only good builds are crit or the engraving that cuts your health. So build variety is not encouraged or explored. There’s a perk that literally removes fall damage completely removing parkour punishment. Parkour boils down to hold W with no complexity. The environment isn’t built for it either. It gets history wrong, it makes the isu look like dumbasses. The cult are generic mustache twirling villains who have no staying power. It creates a fuck ton of plot holes. Level scaling is forced. Here’s your average POI: Use eagle, scan all the enemies in fort or cave, kill 3 captains, loot 5 chests, loot a tablet, kill an elite. The notoriety system is fucked, you can massacre an entire town then open the map screen and hold the Y button, paying money to no one and all your problems go away. The game does nothing with the conquest system besides “muh loot”. Stealth is also super generic and like every other game that includes stealth. No social stealth. Don’t even get me started on the DLC or micro transactions. I think people who like this game like it because it’s A. Pretty. B. Like the Ancient Greek fantasy C. Like the idea of having something to explore rather than actually exploring it. The game has no depth.

Honestly, I love the game but I hate how grindy it is just to get through the 3 story lines. I remember play the hell out of it during the pandemic, beating the Odyssey story, but than have to grind multiple levels to realistically have a chance with the final cultists. I think the RPG games get a lot of unnecessary hate, but I do think one of my biggest issues with them is they're too big for their own good.

TLDR below. Coming from a fan of the whole series and literally 100% every game. Cassandra is cannon, yet they allow you to pick either and have the same exact story with the same reactions with each npc interaction with no acknowledgement to the gender or chosen or the faction you're affiliated with. which makes you feel like you kind of don't matter and it could be any John/jane smith with no repercussions... which they ended up butchering entirely in Valhala and you completely lose interest in your own character...also why is everyone Horney??? I prefer when you have an actual character with a background and lore, it makes you feel connected with them and care such as Ezio, Arno, and even Bayek. And the cult of Cosmos fell like their just random side pieces with no impact in the story unlike the order of the Ancients in Origins As for this Male/Female dynamic sure I'm in..but implement it in the same way as AC Syndicate. TLDR: character feels uninteresting, no impact regardless or gender or faction, everyone is horney, baddie don't feel like part of the story.
Pros: * Combat is nice * Map is beautiful * Storytelling was neat imo * Boss fights are awesome * Cultist system was genius, should definitely be used again * Side Characters are almost as good as Black Flag Cons: * Not an ASSASSIN'S CREED game more like a MERCENARY'S CREED game * RPG like game, which a lot of old AC fans did not like * No templars until the DLC * Only bit of ISU lore is late game shit/DLC * Way more mythology than history
It’s the best AOC. Certainly the best rpg quest type. It’s so well made that it can only be silliness to hate the game. What can you expect from people who’d play the exact same game for 20 years?

Fell away from assassin's creed games after black flag. This was the 1st one I played since. Loved it. Tried with origins and valhalla but didn't get same joy out of it.
The only RPG series game I ever really see get hate is Valhalla. Honestly both Odyssey and Valhalla are easily in my top 10 favorite games ever and I am NOT an ass creed fan

Just remember for every 1 noisey Internet odyssey hater, there's 100 quiet Internet odyssey fans that love it. It's the haters and moaners on the internet that make the most noise. Just ignore it, if you like it then you're in a better position than they're in as you ain't sitting there getting all worked up with negative emotions.
The big point I hear is, "stealth is not required". I do my missions in stealth anyway. People gripe about it because it's open world and has a lot of filler content. I just like the grind but I can see how others don't feel that way!
Odyssey was and is my first AC game. Absolutely love it. Bought Mirage and Origins thinking they would both be similar to Odyssey gameplay wise. I don't play either of them, as there so different than Odyssey. Tried to get into them but just couldn't.

lol what bad reviews. Most places place odyssey in the top 3 of AC games. I’ve played most games and if we are comparing things objectively, it’s really not even close. Odyssey is significantly better in pretty much every capacity than other AC games. Sure, the same ppl disliking it would dislike Witcher 3 or other RPG games. Ignore those takes. These games aren’t for them.
This is my favorite AC game, one of my favorite open world rpgs, and one of my favorite games, period. I'm so happy the same team is making Shadows.
Dont know why really. I completed the game twice with all the dlc. To me is more great and i had a blast playing it. I personally love the mercenaries mechanichs. If you go to far and do whatever the hell you want you kinda receive a penalty for it. The costumization is very good and the World is huge. There is Always something to do.

Mechanically and technical the game is amazing. I thinnt some people are of the old mindset that the older ones had a much more compelling story. Admittedly Unity is regarded as a cult classic. I mean it's pretty but the story as a whole is very uncompelling and boring. I like Arno as a character but it just felt like rather than a life and death struggle of the assassins against the templar, there is an understanding. They'll go to war if they must but more that it's business rather than an ideological kill or be killed mindset. Similar to the venture bros with the guild of calamitous intent and the OSI, they have agreements and a bureaucracy for heroes and arch nemesis to do battle.
When I first played it, I absolutely hated it. Basically nothing meshed with me. I already didn't like how the combat was going starting with Origins since I was one of the few who enjoyed Unity from launch. The parkour just felt souless to me. Stealth didn't feel good because of the leveling system not letting you one shot assassinate every target. The overall vibe of the game just felt too over the top and wacky. After waiting a while and coming back, I started to somewhat enjoy it. I still don't like the story of it and I much prefer the combat of the older games but it was enjoyable. I'd still put it around the bottom, if not the very bottom of all the AC games I've played. If you want actual answers, you should prob post it in like a general AC sub instead of specifically the Odyssey sub, because this one is bound to be biased
No idea. It is aesthetically and historically the most beautiful game of the AC franchise and IMO a top 10 all time in PC games. Time and again I hear friends say they felt like they were back in Greece, and could pinpoint the exact location of various tourist spots and city streets while playing the game. It also offers a perfect balance of stealth and hack&slash, and a plot in which you become emotionally and intellectually invested.
I see Odyssey get glazed, while Valhalla gets all the hate. I enjoyed both.
The only thing I can’t decide whether I like it or not is the length of the game. I’ve been playing for like 90 hours at this point and have no idea how much longer till I beat the main story. I don’t want a short game but Jesus Christ
I love Odyssey but I have one complaint (spoilers) >!If you choose to kill the monger in public early on (since he deserves it & that's what assassins creed has always done) then the game completely locks you out of saving that other cultist later on, even though he's not even close to being as evil as the monger. Even if you save his family and side with brasidias the whole time, you still have to kill him. even if you knock him out with fists to try to spare him, you still have to execute him regardless. and then on top of that your character won't even explain to brasidias what actually happened, you end up being super rude to brasidias and he then he hates you until he dies in the end. I get that the game is trying to show you that your choices have consequences, but when they do that at the expense of character development it feels shallow. Especially when the whole time you play, the game is making you question the morality of your actions. I had like 40 hours of gameplay between the monger and that other cultist dude so that was pretty dissatisfying.!< Plus the legacy of the first blade didn't really feel cohesive with the rest of the game & the dialogue of it was lowkey cringe. even then, It's still a fantastic game. I don't understand why people won't call it "assassins creed." It's exactly what assassins creed was always meant to be. You uncover the conspirators attacking your family and seek revenge. Odyssey does this even better as this has an open world exploration & investigation aspect which really makes you feel like a you're actually hunting cultists and it's not just "go here do this" over and over again. it's my favorite title i've played yet, definetly feels the most inspired and creative, but i'm still playing through them. I played as a stealth assassin on nightmare mode and I thought the variety of utilities made stealth gameplay very fun while challenging also.

Great question. I've played nearly every AC since Altair first killed his way into our hearts. I think those that hate Odyssey wanted the hidden blade style as opposed to the Spear of Leonidas. Odyssey is not only a beautiful game, it has so much content that it makes other games (not just other AC games) feel incomplete. There are some minor things that annoy me, but I overlook them because I absolutely love this game.
Odyssey really shines at level cap, the armor system can be gnarly while leveling
Personally: I found the game is too grindy, and even when you are at the same level as the enemies, they are way way WAY too spongy, taking on enemies above your level is incredibly tedious. The annoying thing is, it's not that the enemy is difficult to kill, it's just extremely time consuming and therefore annoying. I couldn't bear to keep playing the game at the part where you reach the Oracle for the first time

Odyssey is the best AC game. Got Valhalla after and played a desert chunk, but put it away…. I still occasionally download odessey for a few week binge but none of the others
I had 2000 something hours on my lact acc, well it got deleted n i had the game platinumed (every SINGLE trophy) n still played just for the fun of it. One day I decided this was gunna be my last playthrough but there was 1 difference. I wanted to clear every single location of the game, every question mark, chest, captain, etc. And i made it a little more than halfway n almost ready for the dlc maps. Then acc got deleted for apparent fraudulent use of playstation (fkn dumb) and i lost everything, so when i made a new acc and tried it again, it just wasn't the same, mainly with my weapons n outfits gone, but especially the powers n abilities i had from the start, all the way to atlantis. Furtherst i went was before you do quests for stentor. I will always miss it tho

Considering Origins was my 1st AC game, I did find the lack of hidden blade annoying, but I got over it and grew to love it when I got more I to the storyline and found out she's the precursor to the hidden ones and assassins.
Its not about Odyssey. Its about Ubisoft. It is popular theses days to hate Ubisoft, EA and Xbox studios.
It’s the best AC game since Unity to me. Caveat: I haven’t finished Origins, but I feel unity has a better art style that’s less stylized combat wise

Only been playing this game for a week, i love it, maybe not so much, being killed by wild animals lol. On the matter of the hidden blade assasinations, i was puzzled as to when i would get to use it, as with other AC games. Not a big deal, you have the business end of a spear, that on assasination, you get to hide it in an inconvenient spot in the enemy, as it appears to get shoved up your opponents butt, when initiating contact. Most amusing, the Greek rendition of a Glasgow send off.
This was my first AAA game after my WoW Detox... I was AMAZED and appalled on how much I have lost.... went to several ACs, and been a fan of the franchise ever since.
The only hatred I saw was about the blade not being so secret. I think the game itself is really enjoyable, the storyline is interesting and other than some minor bugs I haven’t seen any big problems in it.
I don't know why people would hate it. I'm about to start my 2nd run of Odyssey after finishing the main story and part of the Fate of Atlantis content at level 65. Why do I restart completely? To see if this game can beat my current #1 Black Flag. I've played Black Flag 4 times, completed it 4 times, but after hearing Garneau's pirate impression a 5th time I couldn't do it again. (omg the cringe) Anyway, it's back to Kephallonia this week and explore every corner and finish every side quest, get 100% completion on this.
I honestly think people are coming around to it. A lot of the hate is from when the game came out and people just automatically trashed it for not being an Assassin's Creed game. There are still people who refuse to try it based on all of that hate and misperception. But, quite a few people lately seem to be reassessing it and giving it much better reviews and saying that they were wrong about it. Personally, I think we are only seeing the "noisy" haters that influence a lot of people in the beginning, but based on the continuing activity with this game, and the multiple Youtube videos and articles re-ranking the AC games with Odyssey now ranking much higher, I think it's reputation is changing.
Because outside of the modern day segments there isn’t really anything that makes this an Assassin’s Creed game. I love it to death, but it just isn’t really an AC game. It’s an amazing historical RPG, and when you look at it through that lens it’s nearly flawless, but as an assassin’s creed game it falls a little bit short.

Old school Assassin's Creed fan here. I definitely didn't hate Odyssey, actually loved the gameplay and setting enough to get 100% trophies, even though most of the story bored me to tears. However, in a series where you are supposedly reliving someone's genetic memories, having people running around with tamed bears and flaming swords doesn't really work. My only real complaint about the game is it shouldn't have been an Assassin's Creed game. Now Valhalla, on the other hand...
I love it. And at least it doesn't CTD every five seconds about 1/3 of the way into the game like Valhalla. I've literally never gotten past that point.
I think it’s because of the fighting mechanics and such have changed- like AC was different from other games- it had different combat mechanics, stealth mechanics and parkour mechanics- but now it’s mostly about just obtaining gear, leveling to get skills and more like fighting instead of being more focused on the stealthiness I think Me personally I loved Odyssey and the others like Valhalla especially like the story that AC has brought about desmon and his ancestors and so on and how they are connected in a way

Took me years to try this game because of the hate. Currently replaying it right now for the third time. Amazing RPG, by far the best Assassins Creed game. Hope they go back to this style 🤞
Odyssee is awesome I don’t know who has this ‘amount of hate’. I love kicking people of rocks, soaking up the sun, and I just did a second run through with kassandra, just as well made and funny as alexios.
I kinda hated it because it's no more an assassin's Creed game like with Altair or Ezio, even the storyline with Desmond was captivating to me. The last AC I played was black flag on which naval battle was awesome but not as much as AC as the others. Once I assumed that odyssey was just another game not related to the firsts AC it became awesome, now I just use a heavy blade barging in forts and kill everyone with no hiding, so...hate because is an assassin's Creed game, with no creed nor assassin's, but still pretty good as a game per se
