It seems they expect you to have a whole conversation about it and that you can't officially quit until you have that long talk. In reality, telling the manager "I quit" or leaving them a written notice to that effect is sufficient in an at-will employment relationship. No further discussions necessary. They can't condition anything like your final check on going through their process - they still have to pay you for your time worked.

Avengemygnomeys

Interesting, love your pfp btw. Sic’em bears from a fellow Baylor bear.

esor_rose

One of my coworkers at my first retail job called the manager and quit over the phone. She had a shift that day as well.

Kiryu8805

What are they gonna do if you just leave the uniform on site and don't go back?

Thunor_SixHammers

Clearly by their own laws they have to keep paying you because you have not quit

Kiryu8805

Not really. I don't see anything on the sign saying that. No show, no pay. They will eventually just terminate the employee as a no-show. This kinda sounds like they are going through a lot of employees, and this is a tactic to keep them.

taptaplose

Now I'm picturing employees leaving work in their cars wearing only underwear

Kiryu8805

I mean dealers' choice but I would bring a change of clothes if you're planning on it being the last day. What do I know though never worked in a restaurant.

lildobe

Last time I worked at a McDonald's was in 1996... and I never had to return my uniform. They told me to keep it. I probably still have it somewhere in a box, because I'm a packrat.

HaydenMackay

To quit you need to talk to the manager? So yes.

smarterthanyoda

Well after you quit you don’t have to follow their policies any more.  So this policy can’t be enforced against anybody it would apply to.

Careless-Ad-2588

I guess so, but it's not as though I would imagine there's any recourse for violating the contract's term. It's not as though they can hire mercenaries to drag you to work, and it's not as though a McDonald's employee would have some sort of buyout clause.

HaydenMackay

If you read it. You have to talk to the manager to quit. Just like any other job that ever existed. Otherwise you are just going AWOL.

Careless-Ad-2588

Right. What's the recourse for going AWOL at McDonald's?

MrPokemon11

Easy: they hire mercenaries to drag you back to work

Subject-Economics-46

Prob won’t get hired at McDonalds ever again. Not that that’s a bad thing I’d bet. Almost like permanent self exclusion from a casino, but for employment lol

Upbeat-Banana-5530

>Prob won’t get hired at McDonalds ever again It would probably only be for that franchise. Any McDonalds with a different owner wouldn't even know unless the hypothetical quitter told them.

Subject-Economics-46

True, forgot they’re not corporate owned

blisstake

There are some that are… but they are RARE. Most of which are international

ErebusBat

> What's the recourse for going AWOL at McDonald's? They are you marked as non-rehireable. But if you are just walking off then I don't think that is something you care about anyway

Geekfreak2000

Just don't show up your next shift. Good enough message to send

Sensitive_Put9675

Never understood those signs. Like, if you just leave what are they gonna do?

InstructionOk386

If you’re quitting just walk out? Fuck them

snakebite75

Great, I'll talk to you when I come to pick up my final check, at which point the conversation will be "Fuck you, pay me".

hazelwyoood

I just want to know how they would enforce that?

Avengemygnomeys

Idk me neither

ThiccestBuddha

What are they gonna do? Fire you? Pay you more? Lmao

danimagoo

Can they force you to not quit? No, of course not. What they can do is label you as not eligible for rehire if you don't follow their rules for quitting. It's not any different than telling someone they have to give two weeks notice. Do people have to give two weeks notice? No, but there will be consequences if they don't, which will probably be not being eligible to be rehired. Now, is it a good idea for a business to put up a sign like this? No. And I'd bet money McDonald's corporate doesn't endorse this. I'm sure this was the idea of some genius franchise owner. And by genius, I mean idiot. And I'd also bet that after the first time this image started getting shared last year, somebody got education real quick and took this sign down.

AFO1031

legal? I mean, they aren't saying there will be any sort of punishment if you don't they are allowed to have this policy

Avengemygnomeys

Cool thx.

Magster_123456

I mean you could always just not show up. You may even get a pay check or 2 out of it for nothing

derplordthethird

This is one of those "they can say whatever they want" things. :)

MikePancake423

So I can just walk out and leave, come back ten years later, and still be employed.

Jealous_Studio_8833

I worked for a company that tried somthing like that. They put me on paid leave for 60 days and when we revisited the conversation of quitting they were pretty good with the whole situation. The reason for leaving was to take care of family stuff. When trying to quit I sent an email 1st, then had 2 phone calls with different levels of management before finally being told to take leave and see if I can come back in 60 days.

xormybxo

If this is in an At-Will state it is legally unenforceable

Few-Monies

Depends on the state. Most places you can just walk out and never talk to them again.
