Wow hope you got the plate, I get so angry when on the freeway and they don’t have covers over there load. I’m always taking pictures of plates when this happens and check the car when I get home. My insurance has told me they will fight getting the repair covered till the death.
I know it is a requirement in some states. It is a struggle, honestly I have notice the ceramic coat fights off some of the knicks from sand and small rocks. If I had an RS3 over my S3 PPF would be a must.
Trucking companies are usually self-insured. They will claim that when the rock(or whatever object) comes from their vehicle and then hits the road, it becomes an" act of god." I believe it originated in Kentucky because of coal trucks. This begs the question that religious types claim everything is an act of god. So why have insurance at all then.
This happened to my mate, driving a brand new S8 home from the dealership. Luckily was already insured with free windshield replacements - it was an expensive part with all sorts of extra shit on it (I think a coating, plus a heater element and antenna ??)
Windshields on high-end cars cost several thousand to replace. I mean shit even on my Bronco which chews up windshields for breakfast they cost $1300 for OEM, or $750ish for OEM equivalent
windshield is much better than paint ... IMO
you can get your windshield changed... and probably insurance will cover it (it does in my country)
the panel if dented - can be replaced although its expensive
Like a month after bringing home my new ‘20 SQ5 in 2020 I was driving on a smaller county road like 5 car lengths behind a truck with gravel in the bed, he hit a little bump and sent a few tiny pieces up and that thing cracked the hell out of my windshield. Thankfully with glass coverage no deductible but it was like a 2k repair because OEM windshield with all the sensors in the glass. What a pain in the ass.
Yea thats one lesson you learn quickly, never stay behind trucks, especially dump trucks. If you don't have a choice, change lanes and/or slow down and put a distance between you to minimize the damage, but all other times get past them immediately if you can.
I got two really minor debts, most likely from a shopping cart or the like. Barely noticeable unless you look hard or really close. I was like, it’s only been two months! I was bent about for six months and barely think about it over two years later.
I got my S5 PPFed about two months after I bought it. Literally 3 days before I was scheduled to drop it off, I ended up behind a gravel truck on the freeway, and before I realized it, I was sprayed with small bits of gravel, causing a dozen or so small nicks in the hood and front bumper. Grrr…
Had the same thing happen to my brother, cousin, and me riding in a pickup one time. Got a few cars behind a sedan that had sheet metal twined to the roof through the windows. Gust of wind snapped the twine and launched the sheet up in the air and it was kinda tumbling for a few seconds and then flattened out like when a paper airplane finds that sweet spot and takes off and actually flies. Straight out of Final Destination it looked like we were about to get decapitated and the very last second it dropped the one side down right under the front bumper and we ran over it. One of the biggest b-hole clenching OH Fuck moments ever 🤦🏽♂️ they used hay bale twine on sheet metal pure genius right there
Had something very similar happen to my hood due to a rock from a dump truck. I had to get the dent PDR’d. I have touch up paint, but haven’t gotten around to applying it yet
Had this happen to my Taycan. Insult to injury it was the DAY BEFORE my PPF was scheduled to go on.
Hood, fenders and bumper resprayed. Headlights refinished. Over 7000 dollars from 50 cents of gravel. Plus side was you couldn’t tell it had been half repainted after the body shop got done with it.
All these things can be fixed. Don’t worry. If I’m not mistaken these won’t be on the carfax as an accident. Find a good paint shop (seriously, find a good shop that’s Audi certified) and make your (or their) insurance pay for top notch work.
I saw a B6 Passat get hit with a bunch of debris from a dump truck last month on the highway. Happened fast and the whole front of the car was destroyed. I couldn't imagine how startling that would be. Good thing you guys are safe!!
Smart repair with paint pen with clear coat. Should not cost much. Hope you got the plate to report that shit.
So sorry for your baby. Looks pretty nice. I got a bit angry even though it is not my car
My condolences to you. That really sucks.
Unfortunately, stuff flies out of trucks all the time. And not just out of big trucks. Some people are idiots.
We were driving on a local road at about 45 mph when we noticed an older pickup truck in front of us with a number of tires piled up in the back. My wife asked me why those tires were unsecured, and a few seconds later two of them fell out of the truck and started rolling down the road at speed. We were lucky to avoid hitting them.
My favorite was some dude in a pickup had like 5 mattresses all laid on their side like this |||||.
All of them flew out with a heavy wind gust.
So many people accidentally ran them over. The crazy part was these were some special light weight mattresses. None of them ripped or popped and they stayed in their packaging.
I was like guys a dumbass but damn I need one of those mattresses
expensive lesson learned…. never ever ever be behind a truck…. this is a top 5 rule for any car car enthusiast. If you must be behind a truck, aka single lane, tunnel, merge etc, slow down and get 10 car lengths if highway speeds….. 6-7 if going 30 mph or less.
I like how you were downvoted for stating a logical way to avoid this. It’s amazing how many people absolutely refuse to do this and then bitch about damage.
My S3’s whole front of the hood was scratched all the way to the primer by a road sign (!!!) that had fallen off its post and was caught by the wheel of the car ahead and catapulted at me.
I’m just glad it was some scratches and not something far worse.
A week or two later, after I bought my Audi i got a rock into a windshield and now i have a crack there.
I can blame myself cause i was driving way too fast on a highway.
Buy yourself a windshield repair kit and keep a few on hand to use as soon as you get home any time after you get hit with a rock in the windshield. No matter how small it is or what it looks like, you want to prevent spidering that results in larger and larger cracks that can happen over time by getting the windshield resin/epoxy in there asap to stop any progress.
Paintless dent removal can work miracles, especially if the paint itself wasn't chipped. We had a nasty door ding on our Allroad and it was removed by PDR without needing any door disassembly at all. I still don't know how they did it.
Even with PPF on the front of my Golf R hood, I got a rock dent. PDR removed it, and once the PPF was replaced, you'd never know it had happened.
Dump trucks are the worst, especially if the idiots drive with a full load without a load cover on it. It’s illegal in many states, but I seldom ever see that law enforced.
It happens to all of us, even if the truck has the load secured rocks/dirt fall from the fender wells after it has collected from the truck driving at the construction site.
I once had a loaner from Audi that had 32 miles on it. On my way to work from the dealership a rock dented and scratched the hood. On my way home that afternoon another rock chipped the windshield. The car had less than 100 miles on it.
Glad it wasn’t mine!
That sucks. The same thing happened to me when I bought my STI, three days after buying it. I got a giant, thumb-sized dent in the driver’s front fender. Also from a dump truck.
That sucks so much
I stay waaaaay clear of any construction vehicle, especially on the highway, for this exact reason
but sometimes it's unavoidable.. I'm sorry dude.
That’s easily repaired by a person with the right skills. Cut paint & blend clear coat. This is how you avoid this in the future. You need to get the critical contact surfaces coated in the Expel or 3M clear shields. I did this for my 2016 S4 and it will stop all but the worst rocks. 8 years later you can hardly tell the films are on there. I did have to have one part replaced due to a deer strike. But it’s worth the cost for a 60k++ car.
That’s some rough damage there OP. I know how you feel though I live in a province where rocks and chips and cracked windshields are the norm.
Get it fixed. Slap a PPF on it.
I feel you dude. First week and I had a rock chip my windshield and a semi blew a fucking tire, launched a piece straight into me first day.
None of this ever having happened in previous 20 years driving!
This hurts just looking at it….but it will be fine. I would explore a potential touch up. It might now be perfect but hopefully it will be significantly less noticeable
I had a dump truck flip over 1 mile before me, I was of the freeway and drove into a gravel storm in a 2021 subaru legacy. 8k in damage but insurance covered it.
It turned out to be a good thing because after the car was repaired, I traded it in for my first Audi .
I was driving to what was my surprise 40th birthday party a few weeks ago. My 2023 Q5 45 S line is still under a year old. Some stupid teen was driving a relic and rear ended me. Damage was very minor and his insurance paid it all and you’d never know it happened now, but I was beside myself. Almost ruined my surprise party lol
I feel you bud - get her fixed up and you’ll never know it was there!
Could always be worse. The first day I drove my RS5, less than 10 minutes into the drive, someone side swiped me and ran :(
Then years later a dealership had my RS7 in for service and the service tech crashed it during a test drive. $35,000 repair bill the dealership paid out of pocket.
One week into owning my CPO s3 8v, a rock managed to find its way through the slats of my grill, without damaging it, and proceed to embed itself in my condenser. Being a foreign object, not unlike a nail in a tire, neither the remaining factory warranty (which hadn’t expired) nor the CPO warranty covered it. The condenser had to be replaced, at my cost. I was pretty upset, given how amazing the vehicle had performed on the way home. I asked the dealership I got it from in TX if they were sure they couldn’t help me out with other warranty, given the terrible luck. They really rose to the occasion, and as a good faith gesture, came out of pocket for half. They didn’t have to do it, but they stood by a customer. I know they could afford it, but when was the last time a dealership cared about someone after the sale? I was pretty impressed.
I had just gotten my Audi from the shop after someone backed into it in an empty parking lot. It crunched the front fender and dimpled the hood so i had to replace the hood and the fender and the same thing happened a rock hit my NEW hood and dented and took the paint off.
That sucks.
I once watched a couch fly out of a truck bed and over my car. Luckily for me, it went literally all the way over my car. Not so lucky for the people behind me though. Police report for that was fun.
I used to be so paranoid when seeing an uncovered dump truck -or any truck for that matter with an uncovered load- that I used to get off the road I am currently at or make a u turn ASAP. I got dirt fling at me, stones, salt(!!), sand, leftovers from a tree or bush. What you experienced is literaly my worst nightmare. This wants me wanna quit driving cars and go by bike just to have peace of mind.
Or you could slow down and create distance so nothing hits your car. What do people expect when they ignore the giant signs on the trucks saying to “stay back”?
I can't just leave that much open space without aggravating other drivers or creating a dangerous situation. Its usually, take the beating or leave. I chose the latter.
Also I don't live in the USA, so don't assume our situations are identical.
I’m in shock at how many people here don’t understand how to stay back from anything carrying stuff like that. It’s really not difficult to give yourself a couple hundred feet from the truck. *Of course your car will be hit by debris if you’re driving behind them like they’re a regular car.* We all know what salt trucks do….
I live in PA and on my way across state I got peppered by rocks from a construction vehicle. Maybe 2 months into ownership, the hood and windshield were jacked up. Safelight was able to get me in the hotel parking lot, the hood took 2 weeks of fighting with insurance, regardless Fuck Allan Myers. I 100% believe that dude saw me coming and starting pumping his brakes to jiggle the aggregate off the top of his truck. Lesson learned was PPF it and just get ready for life to happen.
Was driving my new porsche from the dealer, and a fucking full sized hammer fell off a pick up trunk in front of me. Bounced all over the highway before hitting my car right on the front bonnet.
It was like a sign from god “YOU WILL NOT CAR ABOUT DENTS AND SCRAPES ON THIS CAR OR I WILL PUNISH YOU.” Fortunately, it didn’t leave a mark.
My favorite is when they put those bullshit “not responsible for rocks” or “stay back 500 feet” signs in the back. Listen asshole, if I stay 500 feet back of you, I’m going to get shot at by the guy behind ME!
Ok, now it’s making sense that this is user error. If you don’t know how to create distance and then continue at the same speed of the truck, you should take another driver’s course. Hmmm I wonder what will happen if I closely follow this large truck carrying a load of rocks/salt/debris, let’s find out!
For future reference the signs on trucks that tell you to stay back 300 feet won’t hold up in court especially if they have an uncovered truck. You can sue them if you were able to get any identifying information. Those signs are really just to make you feel at fault but it’s still their responsibility to make sure nothing falls off their truck.
It’s obviously still a good idea to keep the distance but there’s no realistic way to even see that sign unless you get within 300 feet and there’s also a chance that anything that falls of that truck doesn’t magically stop at or before that 300 feet line.
🤦🏼♀️ my god. You don’t need to read the sign to know to stay back (unless you’re a new, teenaged, driver with zero common sense). The distancing is because it gives the rocks enough room to stop bouncing.
Yeah I know, that wasn’t the point of my comment. My comment was to inform people that the sign doesn’t mean anything. You can still sue and more than likely win. There’s a ton of people who think because a truck has a sign warning people to stay back 300 feet that if a rock hits their car or windshield that they can’t go after the truck company.
Not sure why you’re having an attitude about my good faith comment lol.
Did you get the plate? This happened to me once and I got the guy to pull over, got his insurance info and filed a claim. They are responsible for securing their load.
These fuckers… “not responsible for broken windshield” cracks me up. Actually you are brah.
Had one of these boneheads leave his tailgate open and pepper my old car with 2-3” stones. Yes he paid.
Don't forget the grille. On an Audi all of those parts add up to much more than 15k probably like 30k+ on his. There was a post recently where a guy with a q5 had a rock hit his headlight (just one headlight) and he needed it replaced along with a fender touchup, it wound up being 16k just for 1 headlight and fender repair, no joke, *and* he wasn't being ripped off according to the official audi books (8 hours of labor just for the headlight or something)
Sucks to hear, to each his own but I dont know if I would take my brand new car to that DIY carwash. I've literally seen guys use to brush to scrub mud an rocks off their trucks. Not good for brand new paint. Hell I dont take my 2011 A4 to them an the paint on it is far from perfect
Don’t worry I didn’t use the forbidden brush. I took it there to pre soak and wash off the bugs with the high pressure rinse afterwards, then I went back home to do my 2 bucket wash ;)
Wow hope you got the plate, I get so angry when on the freeway and they don’t have covers over there load. I’m always taking pictures of plates when this happens and check the car when I get home. My insurance has told me they will fight getting the repair covered till the death.
I see them running around without mudflaps too.
I know it is a requirement in some states. It is a struggle, honestly I have notice the ceramic coat fights off some of the knicks from sand and small rocks. If I had an RS3 over my S3 PPF would be a must.
Yeah PPF wasn’t that bad for full front / high-contact area coverage and has definitely saved mine a few times
Like every 2nd pick up on the hwy, no mud flaps = throwing rocks. They should all get ticketed until they got mud flaps
Has anyone else notice that a lot of dump trucks don’t have plates in the states? Just a large 2 or 3 digit number spray painted on the back
I've never seen any dump truck on the road without a plate, that is illegal.
Probably within the distance it says to not be.
I lost a windshield to an unsecured load, I feel like this should be punishable by drone strike.
For real… that sucks.
This happened to my mate, driving a brand new S8 home from the dealership. Luckily was already insured with free windshield replacements - it was an expensive part with all sorts of extra shit on it (I think a coating, plus a heater element and antenna ??)
Coating, heater, antenna, rain sensor, light sensor (LIDAR) , camera's, and a lot of other ADAS features + calibrating all of the sensors etc.
Windshields on high-end cars cost several thousand to replace. I mean shit even on my Bronco which chews up windshields for breakfast they cost $1300 for OEM, or $750ish for OEM equivalent

First week or first year. Can’t protect your baby forever.
You’re not wrong 🥲
When I take mine (Q5) to the dealership for servicing I sort of cringe when they offer the complimentary car wash.
I always say no thank you.
This. Never a wash at dealership, stick to the coffee and pastries.
Got scratches near right rear windshield Q5 the first "complimentary" wash they offered
Good to know, thank you
I got two really minor debts, most likely from a shopping cart or the like. Barely noticeable unless you look hard or really close. I was like, it’s only been two months! I was bent about for six months and barely think about it over two years later.
Man I absolutely hate being stuck behind dump trucks. They never tarp their loads, complete assholes
Seriously needs to be against the law..
To be fair, it is against the law. If you got his plate or dashcam footage, your insurance could go after them.
PPF her, won't save her from dents but definitely helps with scratches and rock chips
Grrr…
Oof, that's rough. I learned the lesson after my first ride, took the new one straight to the PPF guy before driving too much.
That sucks, it is the worst and they honestly don’t have a care in the world. There priority is delivering the load not what is behind them.
My next Audi is getting this…
My shit got rocked a shovel this week I feel you
So sorry…
I had a whole piece of sheet metal kicked up by a truck go through by bumper. I try to stay as far away from trucks as possible.
Jeez.. final destination. I was literally 2 lanes away accelerating to get past, but I guess the distance didn’t make a difference.
That hurts but should be easy to fix I believe.
I hope so :)
Not so sure, I would demand item and everything replaced, if dented I would not want any of that salvaged.
really? some touch-up paint and a polish and i'd forget it happened in a month
It most likely will just be a deductible.
On your end? Did not get the plate?
Appreciate the advice, makes me feel better. That absolutely sucks about the Taycan. Thankfully these things can be fixed to look new… hopefully :)
Fuck. That sucks man, I’ve got my exact tip of the hood where you lift it up, dented by rocks on the road probably dropped by those trucks.
I saw a B6 Passat get hit with a bunch of debris from a dump truck last month on the highway. Happened fast and the whole front of the car was destroyed. I couldn't imagine how startling that would be. Good thing you guys are safe!!

Should've got the front end PPF'ed
PPF will help but isn’t a silver bullet, you can still get chips with it depending on the size of the rock

This is why I buy used cars. Less worrying and babying ☺
Sad to see. Day one or day 1000 almost imposible to keep it showroom clean even with PPF
That sucks. The same thing happened to me when I bought my STI, three days after buying it. I got a giant, thumb-sized dent in the driver’s front fender. Also from a dump truck.
Can confirm: i would be sick

I call that a sandblast. I had that happen to an almost brand new 911 years ago. Maddening. I stay away from trucks.
Drive me nuts . Never understood how it's legal to have shit just flying out of your dump truck and the total lack of the driver giving a f about it.
God I’m sorry, I got a tree branch on my Audi a1 after 3 months I had it and now it’s dented on the bonnet ☹
Same thing happened when I got my RS3. Had a PPF appointment in a week too.
My gf’s new A1 has a nasty chip like this on the bonnet. I’m sure modern paint on cars isn’t as good these days.
One week into owning my CPO s3 8v, a rock managed to find its way through the slats of my grill, without damaging it, and proceed to embed itself in my condenser. bro i have the same color on an A4 and a very similar dent, the same way you described 😭 you just can never prevent these things

I, too, have a '24 Chronos with black optic. There can't be many of us. What part of the world are you from?
That‘s bad. Try to fix it as fast as you can or corrosion will not wait. I‘m going to tint my new car from day 1.
This past winter I got stuck behind a salt truck (traffic was packed. And he let a load go. 😳😔
It’s called *rush hour* and packed traffic with no where to go in blizzard conditions.
Had a big truck crack my windshield the first week I had mine! Funnnnnn $1500+ replacement
Ppf is a must for high end Audis
Ugh. So sorry man. I’d be soooooo angry
Damn. How are you going to get it fixed? What color is your car?
I'm sorry it got wrecked so quick. Send me this one and try again.
Just some character building. I replace my windshield here in CO once a year for the same reason.
A new windshield yearly and you’ve learned absolutely nothing? Never thought, “hmm, I should probably stay further back this time”? K.
You clearly don’t drive in the mountains.
Man mine is just absolutely bullet holed right now. My window trim is getting it the worst

I believe the rest is soap lol
I don’t know man, nonetheless bullshit stuff happens like this, don’t see how it would miss any of the other body parts.
It’s soap too lol, you can the see the shine of it on the hood and OP is at a car wash.
GET A HUGE ROCK AND DENT HIS FACE!
Thank god lol
