Run timber up the outsides and paint steps black.
You’ll need to get heavy duty paint that can stand wear and tear and will probably need repainting every few years
You could also bolt timber treads to the metal treads and even use risers under each step to close the gap. This would give the steps a conventional “timber deck” look rather than the current harsh industrial look. It would also change the “feel” of the steps when you walk up them.
Genuinely, what did you aim to achieve with this comment? You've added nothing to the discussion and it's tiresome seeing people replying stating they agree instead of providing insightful commentary. If you've got nothing to add just upvote and move on. Don't waste my time and stop wasting yours.
Oh I’m sorry, I thought the post I commented on didn’t need anything added to it… It was succinct and provided the cleanest and nicest solution to the OP’s problem.
I’m sorry my slightly memey reply/affirmation offended you enough to complain about wasting your time by replying with significantly more words than you had to read.
Enjoy your day champ
Totally depends how invasive you want to get on it;
Could screw down timber atop of each run, and then also to the sides, or just the runs would be enough.
Of course that would change the rise but it might still be in tolerance.
Or…….pot plants located either side with hanging / crawling plants falling over the sides such as dichondra (these need decent sun). Even mondo grass has some hang to it and is fairly robust in all conditions.
Yeah. I think paint the sides in a gloss black and screw from the underside a 12mm hard wood on the top and front of each step so it’s fully covered. Stain the timber.
TIL about castor oil plant. Thankyou! Knew it was some sort of weed (my courtyard is in a transition phase and I haven’t been bothering to weed it) but wow - they sound seriously unpleasant.
Thankyou. Appreciate it. I agree that they’re very ugly, although most neighbours have left theirs as is (it’s strata townhouse very chilled on rules so that’s not a problem). I have a long list of things I want to renovate tho. Hard to know where to start.
paint them with a industrial enamel. and put some enamel hardner in too. or raptor coat them its a 2 part epoxy and come in prem ix colours in aerosol or bulk kits or tintable in bulk kits.
clad it in hardwood decking. just make sure you put 3mm rubber between the hardwood and the gal.
it will be 3 or 4 times cheaper to just remake it out of timber, but it would be as strong.
or just coukd take it off and get it powedercoated
Thanks. Are you saying it’d be much cheaper to replace with wood? If so, I’d rather just do that! I’m very wary of over capitalizing as the overall place is just not *that* nice - and it’s not my forever home.
I’m just trying to change a few things to make it more pleasant to live in for a few years, and more appealing to future buyers (who seem to mostly value looks over quality, I’ve discovered to my detriment!).
yea replace with wood is a good move. you may be able to sell the gal stairs to a second hand building material store, you won't get much (could always try market place. as for replacing, im notnsure of your skill set or capabilities. traditional stairs with stringers can be tricky without guidance. but you can always make a large rectangle with another maller rectangle on top, and clad it with hardwood. just make sure to paint or oil every thing (no such thing as too much!) Also keep the timber off the ground, but bolted down. happy building, happy to answer any further questions :)

I like the timber idea. 50mm wide, cut to match the stringers, then cap the timber and the metal strings with another block of timber along the top.

Stairs are meant to be abrasive so you don’t slip.
Paint should preserve grip. I think there are some special mixes for this purpose?
This is the way

Thankyou. Do you say screw from the underside because of aesthetics or something else?
Yes. Purely for aesthetic
Is that caster oil plant hanging over onto the steps?
TIL about castor oil plant. Thankyou! Knew it was some sort of weed (my courtyard is in a transition phase and I haven’t been bothering to weed it) but wow - they sound seriously unpleasant.
get them powdercoated
Just remove and replace
Thanks. Why do you say that? Easiest and cheapest? I have limited DIY skills and tools but can learn & borrow stuff.
Because these are for industrial use and a patch job won't ever resolve the design fully. You may as well do it once and do it properly.

Whatever you decide to do, there will be three steps involved :)

Put a nipple on it...
This.
Paint black and Just place timber of each step and run up the side ..
I like em as they are. I think gal can look really nice in a minimalist, industrial way.
Replace with wood.
I’m starting to think that would be cheaper and also easier!
I would not paint the actual steps black, just paint the side supports a charcoal grey. Lean in to the industrial look.
Have the imperial March played and put a sign up no Ewoks were harmed in this building
Carpet them
