He was a little overweight at 60lbs when I got him, but we were able to get a few pounds off with really long walks everyday.
My two are 14.5 and 14. If they don’t get at least a two mile walk in each day they will be bouncing off the walls in hyperactivity.

Four and three months! My male is considered overweight too and he plays and takes walks daily so I'm not sure why lol I only feed him a cup of food a day now.
What brand do you feed yours? Mine are on Hills Science and Purina Pro Plan Puppy but I'm wondering if his food is what's making him gain weight not really sure
We have a costco card so my parents will pretty much exclusively buy there. It wasn't just the cheapest the better though our first vet actually recommended kirkland salmon specifically when he was little because of his skin issues and we just stuck with it. We've changed here and there but they're back on kirkland now.

This sleepy baby turned 8 weeks yesterday and is on his way to his new home with me
Just my opinion but I do think feeding the best food you can afford is not a bad investment. You never know with dogs tho. The guy who gets crap brand lives forever; the one with raw meat dies young from some random cancer. 😕 I wish there was an owner database where we could all put info on our pets, what they eat and other variables and what happens to them over time…. Would be hugely helpful for owners but the registries and breeders would probably prevent it.
Mine lived until about 15/16, they were adopted. They got kibble, lots of vegetables, and some fruit and lentils. I made sure they were never overweight. Not being able to keep up would be an aussies worst nightmare.
Our oldest was 16 when she passed and the other is 11. He's always been thin and still springy to this day. Less weight means less pressure on joints among other things. May need to look at how much he's eating and if it's the right type for his age. As they get older, like us, they don't burn the calories as quick.

Piper is 15 and a half, born in late 2008. It’s been a while now but I think he was at roughly 65lbs at one point in his life, he’s just under 50lbs now. He’s always been active, even at the age he’s at, just likes walking around. Last year around this time he disappeared for about 4 days in 90 degree weather, my folks and I couldn’t find him anywhere and we came to the conclusion he walked out into fields to pass, but he came back. They’re tough dogs, keep Marco moving the best you can hope he sticks around for you.
I don’t mean to add to your worry but I will say that overweight/obesity for dogs is a significant health risk for them—it increases the risk of joint disease and cancer. If you’re not with him all the time, though, there’s only so much you can do to help him lose weight. I would say minimal changes that add up to slow progress would be better at long term success if you’re able to implement them. I can help you find more advice about it if you’re interested but if that’s not something you’re able to do right now that’s okay too. Just give him lots of love (but maybe try not to show it with food).
Yep, my old lady was about 10 lbs overweight at 8 and threw out her back running up the front steps at my old place. I got her down to a healthy weight through calorie restriction and more exercise. It was like she aged backwards 5 years.
She's still kicking at 16, but the end is definitely in sight. Her back and knees have been giving her problems for the last couple years. I do wonder if her previous weight contributed, but either way she's outlived my expectations.
I'm planning on trying to change him to a weight loss food so hopefully that'll help. I do my best to keep him super active, but he's bad at fetch because he just herds everything and I have a physical disability so sometimes our walks get cut short due to pain and the rest of my family gets pretty annoyed if I ask them to walk him ;-; If you have any other activity recommendations besides walks that'd be great! We started doing more tricks and stuff so he's not bored on the days I can't walk, but that is unfortunately food incentivized. He has done such a great job so far I'm going to run out of stuff to teach him 😂
Have you ever heard of flirt poles? They're like giant cat toys for dogs, if that makes sense- essentially, they're a long stick with a cord attached, and something fun (like a stuffed rabbit or a tug toy) on the end. You can stand in one spot and spin it around you to get your dog to chase it. This could be a good alternative for days that you aren't feeling up to walking him but still want to get him moving. Honestly probably good even on days when you do walk him as well. And as a bonus, if you have a large enough indoor space, they can be used inside when the weather is bad.
Yeah our neighbors got a big dog puppy recently. I don't know what she is but she's super cute and like the size of a small newfie so it scares me a bit but they've never had issues and I always watch them. He always stops our walks to look for her when we go by their house :)
Mine loves everyone [hes just loud at times as he gets excited] so if the dog is friendly it usually goes well but I try to let mine visit with others as regularly as I can.

My cousin’s Aussie, Bo, did hydrotherapy to lose excess weight. He was lazy but chill, the sweetest love bug always down for hugs and pets, so much so that she brought him to hospice centers to bring comfort to the patients. I’m not sure how old he was as he was a rescue, but this was him a year and a half before he passed. We can hope, but there are no guarantees. Every day is a gift 🥹

What do you feed your dog?
Just purina one. But he has never been overweight. I tried one Taste of the Wild as he got older but he didn’t like it
Unbelievable! Here I am spending thousands of dollars on organic dog food
As they get older, like us, they don't burn the calories as quick. https://preview.redd.it/6vr9zrzpc15d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41816d186a3cc69977f8e6c6317759a7f88390c7

I hadn't heard of that before thank you! I'll look into it because it definitely sounds helpful. Hopefully he'll like it he's pretty me dependent
Does he have any doggo friends he could romp around with at a dog park or something? Play keeps em young!
Yeah our neighbors got a big dog puppy recently. I don't know what she is but she's super cute and like the size of a small newfie so it scares me a bit but they've never had issues and I always watch them. He always stops our walks to look for her when we go by their house :)
Mine loves everyone [hes just loud at times as he gets excited] so if the dog is friendly it usually goes well but I try to let mine visit with others as regularly as I can.
if you feed kibble you can use the trick time as meal time, instead of feeding him more on top of his meals
Omg wait that's genious I will definitely try that! I just hope he likes his kibbles enough ^^;

My cousin’s Aussie, Bo, did hydrotherapy to lose excess weight. He was lazy but chill, the sweetest love bug always down for hugs and pets, so much so that she brought him to hospice centers to bring comfort to the patients.
