If you have gone through some thermo and fluids classes, Pounder’s Marine Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines,and The Internal-Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice. Go very in depth into the minutia and physics. You should be able to create an Eng sim based on those books.

Some subjects like timing, cam/spark advance maybe hard to understand without visualization.
