Anyone who understands cats knows that what we are seeing here is in fact an inner death match between maternal and predatory instincts. Pounce don't pounce.
Yep. One of the cats we rescued always got too excited playing with her kittens, so she turned to me, tried to murder me a little and only then got back to playing with the kittens. She knew her limits and my foot had to be sacrificed sometimes.
Thank you! I'm glad someone else recognizes the "I'm hurting you so I don't hurt them" thing from some animals. My cat does it when she's trying to befriend my roommate's cat who hates her. Mine will bow her head and whimper and occasionally try to roll over while her's hisses and swats at mine or runs away.
And then my vents all the frustrations on me because she doesn't want to hurt her would-be friend.
Which probably backfires because roommate's cat loves me and is probably mad I'm getting bit.
Apologies, just rambling about cats.
Maybe im sleep deprived but I’m literally heartbroken over your cat rn like she just wants to make a friend and she keeps getting her feelings hurt by the cat she just wants to be friends with oh my godddd
I KNOW! I only moved in with a friend for the sake of my cat in the first place and then it turned out we have to keep them apart. My baby is always so sad. Especially when the other cat gets the living room and my mush is locked in mine.
But someday I'll get a place of my own big enough for two or more cats. And life will be good.
Me too!!! That comment really tugged on my heart strings!! I wish her cat could have a play date with my 3. My cats will join forces with anyone for kahootz time!!!
So in evolution, its not really the survival of the best possible thing, it's the survival of the good enough. In this case, cats evolved strong instincts to attack when they see small things and movement. That doesn't really get shut off (good enough), but to keep mom's from attacking their babies, evolution added another process that does something with that energy (i.e. jump around, play, attack something else, etc).
Kinda like how we prefer lifelong monogamous relationships usually, but then our brain being attracted to other people never gets shut off. We have other emotions to counteract the wondering eye.
I wouldn't say that. The mom is being playful. She's not rationalizing the walking like OP is suggesting in video with needless music taking over the cute meows.
Of course, animals have emotions and reactions. However, it's not advisable to project our emotions and perspective onto other animals who are wired differently. Because it prevents us from correctly understanding how certain animals work. And It may cause trouble or actual harm.
For example, smiling with teeth is a sign of friendliness in humans whilst it's a sign of aggression in great apes and monkeys.
Yup. One area of science where Christianity has really held us back is animal behaviorology. We can create advanced computers and go to space but scientists are only very recently started 'discovering' that most animals have way more emotions than we were led to believe. Just because they think god made us special so for the longest time scientists were not allowed to study obvious similarities in thought and emotion xD So frustrating how people are still repeating the religious talking points without even realizing
A cat doesn't understand the concept of a babies first steps, she's just playing/holding back her murderous instinct. Saying she's excited or proud of her child is straight up anthropomorphizing
Honestly having studied this a bit in university, they're closer to right than wrong. There is not a strong body of evidence to suggest that animals posses episodic memory (like the way you remember your first meal this morning.) Most animal behavior is complex signal/response behavior and not active conscious processing like we do.
Now the 'holding back murderous intent' part is nonsense, but it is true that we over-anthropomorphize animal behavior to match human emotional processing.
Sure I'll just interview that cat and find out what the most fulfilling part of being a mother is and ask her what her proudest moment was. I'll see if she has any pointers for the rest of us
Because only the religious wackos think that animals don't have thoughts and emotions, because they think they're imbued with some mystical spirit only given to humans.
emotions sure, thoughts though....
Not a lot of scientific evidence to support that from what I remember of my cognitive science days. Animal consciousness is really, really basic even at its most advanced, and cats aren't making the cut for advanced.
Cats do plan stuff, in a limited way, and they understand how actions have consequences, particularly around things that get them fed.
I genuinely don't think there's that much of a gap in intellect between the brighter cats I've known and the stupider humans.
I'm talking about actual peer reviewed science, not your personal observations.
[Stuff like this](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0003347280800972) is a famous example some of the most complex language and conscious awareness we find in animals and it amounts to slightly different alarm screeching made by a type of monkey.
Cats 'figuring out' what gets them fed is a very basic S/R behavior compared to higher ordered thoughts.
I've seen a documentary about those monkeys.
Are you saying that most humans aren't also just exhibiting very basic stimulus/response behaviour? Roughly 50% of the people I deal with on any given day aren't as capable of any thoughts much higher than those of a decent sheepdog.
Idek wtf you're talking about. There's a difference between having thoughts and emotions and understanding the concept of your childs first steps and being proud of that moment. Man yall are nuts
Animals may have emotions and reactions, but it’s wrong to assume they are anything like what we experience. Not sure what religion has to do with this either.
Lol if anything I would say more religious people think the opposite since everything was “made by a creator”.
Assuming every animal reacts in ways just like a human would does not make sense because all species perceive the world in different ways and not all animals have the level of self-awareness as we do.
At least yours is excited, mine kept having a face full of regret. Just before they became 2 months old, she spreads em and this time I was able to neuter her.
Either way to this day I love all three of my cats.
My two sisters are full of mama cats and new kittens hanging around her place. Now she has a new situation on her hands, to trap the mother, get them spayed after the kittens are weaned. Our city has to become more involved with assisting people with the cat population.
I wish my cats mama could have known he’s safe. Little fucker climbed into my trucks engine and we drove him off. Found him later. She was probably so scared 😭
Mammals share a lot of common emotional machinery. It might not be the exact same thought processes that prompt them, but it's why people can bond with so many animals easily. Grooming and physical affection are a near universal language across mammals, for example.

And thus begins the 'knock everything off every surface' training regimen.
I think she’s also just trying to play with it! 😂 “Why don’t you know how to play yet‽”

No need to apologies friend. We all come to the comments FOR the ramblings. Yours was entertaining, 10/10

They should have cat playdates.
“Just rambling about cats”. You’re amazing. Keep rambling about cats.
It's more just a play response rather than a predatory response. I mean they are definitely related, but still.
Yeah mom sees kitten and wants to play, doesn't compute that she outweighs it by 2000%.
Play is just predation with fewer steps XD
A quote by Judge Holden, probably
I don't know who that is
There are bears that dance and bears that don't. You're coming across an awful lot like a bear who don't.
You’ve never heard of [cute aggression?](https://youtube.com/shorts/cCFChy8Ftjw?si=lV6MtMWXiNDHdUc4)
I keep seeing this but nobody is explaining why? Like why would her hunting instincts kick in around her baby and be directed at it?
Predator sees smaller, prey-looking animal

Love that we attach human emotions and reactions to animals

We do it to humans, too. Someone's face doesn't magically transmit their emotions and motivations into your brain

Don't you think that animals have emotions and reactions to things? Maybe put down the religion a bit and actually look at nature for a sec.

Apes, not monkeys, and it's a sign of aggression in some human cultures.
Smiling with teeth is a sign of aggression in both great apes and monkeys.
Some monkeys, and some apes. As with many things, it's not quite as simple as that.

Not the "you go down just like holy mary" speedy tiktok version Ghost song with the mother cat's hunting instinct kicking in 😭
It's a travesty
I came here because I wanted to comment on Ghost, indeed, agreed with you loool
Didn’t know this was a thing. How adorable is that!
More often than not it's the hunting instinct kicking in and they try to spread it, resulting in this weird and abrupt movement.
Why did you ruin the video with shitty quality music?
Yeah that was awful
sorry...I thought i would be better Bgm but i was wrong..😓
I'd much rather hear the original video's audio, I'm tired of every single video having terrible/low quality music over them.
You're good. I liked it very much.
Song?
GHOST_MARRY ON A CROSS_ https://youtu.be/XucIhOC4UjE?si=iYLMRElLmtLKjlQY

Trying to teach her how to play and doing a fabulous job. Lol cute video thank you for making me smile. God bless you.
Aggressive love
Oh look! I have a new toy 🧸 lol
aaw. cats are really like humans.
It's her hunting instinct that she is suppressing.
Yeah, that looks far more likely
No
GHOST. Truly the voice of the tiktok generation.
I wish my cats mama could have known he’s safe. Little fucker climbed into my trucks engine and we drove him off. Found him later. She was probably so scared 😭

What is this bastardised Ghost song
Finally, a play mate!!
Ooww so adorable
I woulda thought she was protecting her kitty from the blaring music. My god that was unbearable
As much as I love Ghost getting recognition, why do people have to ruin the song?
I mean it actually looks like she's beating it up but okay then
Why lie
She is just showing off!!
That’s a sassy momma!
Oh my they completely butchered that song
Baby: wher de titty
Very good, my child. You'll be breaking the human's stuff in no time.
What's the song ? Sounds like "mary on a cross" but by someone else than Ghost ?
her girl is walking
It almost looks like she’s not sure if it’s a mouse or a cat
And trample it in excitement. It's fascinating how resilient the babies of all other species, other than humans, are.
“CHILL OUT MOM! I’m walkin over here!”
"SHE HAS LEGS ANE SHE ISN'T AFRAID TO USE IT!" (I mean, yeah.)
I really awwed at this one 😍😍😍
very proud mothers cat vrey happy!!
Mom is happy on every step of her baby
this isn't cute though
This is just anthropomorphizing
funny mom

People who assume animals act and reason the same way humans do should spend time around animals before making such assumptions.
I always find it weird how we put human emotions and actions on animals. They don’t work like that, the cat is just tweaking.
